Thank you, this is the first time I have played Schumann or anything from this period, so quite new. I never played classical guitar very much so missed out on the romantic era until now! Did you know that Wagner wrote something for lute?
Yes there is a serenade in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg from 1868 that is accompanied by 'laute' which is clearly in the same mandora tuning. Strange to think of a lute in a Wagner opera!
Lovely! Beautifully played. It's been a long time I've listened to anything from Schumann, so today I've fallen into the "Schumann well" thanks to you. 😊
I haven't played Schumann or anything else this late before, playing mostly baroque music for many years. So it's quite new for me, but nice to be doing something different and perhaps a bit of trailblazing for the instrument as well which many think died with Bach (it didn't!). Most of Schumann is piano based which often isn't playable on plucked instruments, but the odd piece works nicely like this one. I have one more Schumann solo I'm working on as well.
@@Quatrapuntal Interesting. I didn't know that piano pieces are hard to play on plucked instruments. Pieces from Schumann and Bach were amongst the first I've learned playing the piano. Looking forward to whatever you decide to venture to next.
Yes the hands are completely separate on a keyboard, but on a lute or guitar the bassline often has to be fretted as well as the melody, both by the left hand. This limits the complexity and number of parts you can play and things that are quite easy on the piano can become very difficult or impossible. The piano also has a much bigger range so it's not possible to play at the same pitch often. But having the mandolin play the RH and lute the LH it works for some pieces. All of this stuff will hopefully end up on an album next year.
Beautifully played Chris and thanks for all the information. The period instruments you have, were you able to buy them off the shelf or did you have to commission them?
The mandolin is adapted from one I was given years ago, but lutes are all custom made by highly specialised and skilled makers. Particularly when there are a lot of strings like the baroque lute and theorbo, the string spacing is crucial so I drew out the spacing that suited my hands. The spacing is also roughly the same on all of them, to make it easier when switching instruments so that your thumb can find the bass strings.
É bom como a música pode evocar memórias como essa. Esta é a primeira vez que toco Schumann ou algo assim tão tarde, toco música barroca a maior parte da minha vida. Portanto, é algo bastante novo para mim. Você tocou a peça neste tempo?
@@Quatrapuntal Sim! Quando criança eu tinha um álbum de Schumann e o estudava toda semana. Schumann é um dos meus preferidos, mas o meu favorito é Bach! Quando criança eu amava tocar os minuetos de Bach.
No worries! It does play very nicely with single strings, although it wouldn't be suitable for all types of music and isn't as acoustically loud as it was with double metal strings
Lovely!!👏👏
Thank you. Here is another with the same combination, but quite a different mood: th-cam.com/video/Qeipf8cG7AQ/w-d-xo.html
Dynamically beautiful. Cheers.
Thanks Lou, I have a new video out by the way which is quite different, with an 80s retro theme.
Thank you very much from Vienna. Very nice. The idea, The performance. Great!

@@Quatrapuntal I don't think so, unfortunately.

@@Quatrapuntal Thanks for explaining this. Yey, for the new album!

Schumann!!!

I’m curious as to why you removed 4 strings from your mandolin.
Disregard that, just read your description 😂
