    It was a very common practice to use a studio drummer for recording. Not just that, but to bring in stufio musicians for the records and leaving the actual band to learn their parts from the studio musicians for the live shows. So from Martin's point of view, Best could have stayed where he was and Martin could easily work around any musical shortcomings there may have been, as he could have done with any of them.

    Pete best's version is the quarrymen first played in the casbah and has never mentioned this place in any of the dozens of interviews he's given about the beatles. The casbah which was turned into a museum is full of photos and interesting stories but nothing about this is mentioned.. Best's heavy relentless promotion of the casbah club and how the cavern club no longer exists and is nothing more than a facsimile of the old club on the other side of the street. And the casbah is where it all began is now the official story

I'm sure Paul didn't think he was a really good drummer. 15:37 the arrangement wasn't good because Pete didn't have the creative spark to put his part in and help them put their part in. The most amazing thing about the Beatles for 10 years wherever the Beatles were that’s where music was on the timeline. Before that everybody had their genre then it was over. Sinatra came, then he was displaced by Elvis. Then Elvis and all the other teen idols, Ricky Nelson, Fabian, etc. etc. had their brief moment in the sun but it ended when music moved on. The Beatles were the first that we could watch and evolve right before our very eyes. From the mop, top boy band who everybody thought was a gimmick. But it didn’t end there They kept expanding. I was six years old when they hit United States like a bolt of lightning. Yeah yeah yeah! But as I got older, they got older, and more sophisticated. And they wrote their songs… Although I was in seventh grade when come and get, it, came out by Badfinger… And no matter what… I thought it was by The Beatles. Anyway, sorry for such a long comment… But the Beatles are part of history not just music.

      @@BrightmoonLiverpool Thanks David. I’ve seen those black and white shots of Gerry and also The Beatles at Hulme Hall. I think the only colour photos would be at some function/ wedding at the venue in the 1960s. By chance someone might have taken a shot of the group or dance band playing that day on the stage. By the way, a Port Sunlight local told me years ago that she saw The Stones playing at The Girls Club, over the road from the fountain in the village. This would have been around 1963/64 when they were relatively unknown. I’ve not come across any evidence of this. I know they performed at The Cavern and in Birkenhead and New Brighton during this era. You will probably know that Lennon had relatives down the road from Port Sunlight in Rock Ferry that he often used to visit. Believe it or not, John and Yoko were spotted in the village looking for directions for Hulme Hall. This was during that 1969 period when he took Yoko to see Wales and then ended up in a car crash in Scotland.

      @BrightmoonLiverpool 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BrightmoonLiverpool Okay cool, but please tell me if the following timeline is correct: *Wednesday, August 15th:* During the day Brian calls Ringo and offers him the job as Pete's permanent replacement, which Ringo accepts. However, Ringo says he cannot start 'til Saturday, August 18th. So Brian does not give the bad news to Pete that day, as they have a show at that night at The Cavern. Pete plays The Cavern, his last show as The Beatles' drummer. *Thursday, August 16th:* Brian told Pete after the show the night before to meet him in his office the next morning on this day, Thursday the 16th. Pete thinks the meeting is routine, wherein Brian picks Pete's brain about various venues and pay rates, as Pete had previously been The Beatles' booking agent. But that's not what the meeting is about, and Brian drops the bombshell on Pete, telling him the boys want him out, and it's already been arranged that Ringo will join the band on Saturday the 18th in Port Sunlight. Brian asks Pete to play later that night, Thursday the 16th, in Chester, one last time for The Beatles. Pete, stunned by the news, agrees. However, Pete does not show up for the Chester gig, and in a pinch Brian asks Hutch to fill-in. After the gig, Brian asks Hutch to be the permanent drummer for The Beatles. Hutch says no, that Pete is his mate and he won't do the dirty on him. Had Hutch agreed, the offer made to Ringo the day before would have been retracted, and The Fab Four would've gone down in history as John, Paul, George and Hutch. *Friday, August 17th:* No Beatles show scheduled. Mersey Beat announces "Beatles Change Drummers!", and that Pete will join Lee Curtis & The All-Stars beginning September 10th. The issue also announces that The Beatles will fly to London on September 4th for their first official recording session as signed artists. *Saturday, August 18th:* Ringo's first show as The Beatles' permanent drummer in Port Sunlight. *Sunday, August 19th:* No Beatles show scheduled *Monday, August 20th:* No Beatles show scheduled *Tuesday, August 21st:* No Beatles show scheduled *Wednesday, August 22nd:* Ringo's second show as The Beatles' permanent drummer, and his first as their permanent drummer at The Cavern. The show is filmed by Granada TV, which had been arranged well in advance by Mona and Pete Best. Pete is not there, obviously, and just like in Port Sunlight, cries of, *"Ringo Never - Pete Best Forever!"* are heard throughout the venue. Word of the betrayal against Pete has spread widely at this point and George Harrison is assaulted with a head butt just off the stage, giving him a shiner so ugly that it's still visible a fortnight later at EMI in the band's first session as signed artists. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    My only observation here is: would they have dropped George if his playing had raised concerns? I don't think they would have, which confirms what I think we all know, and that is they didn't consider Pete an equal partner. Great vid as usual.

      George's guitar playing at Decca was very average! But the Beatles were always John, Paul, and George as they had been together since the end of 1957! It took Ringo 12 months to break into their triumvirate and it was really Ed Sullivan and going to America that saw him fully settled in as an equal.

    The Beatles, as regards playing their instruments, only Ringo may have got work as a session musician. Their forte was the songwriting and the vocals. Lennon had a great rock n roll voice but was a bang average guitarist as was George. Heard better players in pub bands.

      Yeah, none of them were the best at their instrument in Liverpool at all. It was the combination of the 4 of them that was unbeatable, together with George Martin.

    Is it documented anywhere at which point and why did George Martin understand for the first time (for instance, which song or songs) that Lennon and McCartney were songwriters of extraordinary talent? I understand that he disliked their first compositions but what is the progression of his opinion that they were of special talent?

    In this age of 'retro' its difficult to imagine that the Beatles were old hat only a few years after breaking up, but as someone who was 20 in 1979, most of my thoughts regarding music were about what was happening currently on John Peel, and who was playing in Manchester. The Beatles were definitely in the past, something from my 60s childhood, like The Dave Clark Five and Kathy Kirby - in 1970ish I remember seeing a Beatles scrap book on the local tip. The Rutles had happened, and the Beatles were just near enough in time to be satirized and made fun of. I hardly gave them a thought till Dec 1980, and I think that was the first time I heard 'In my life' over images of John Lennon on the news. Personally I didn't get into the Beatles until 1995 when I picked up 'Shout' in the local library out of wanting something to read. Coincidentally, the Anthology came out later that year, and then came the internet and The Beatles are now where they belong, permanently in the present kings of the hill.

      I agree with you, and having grown up in the 1970s in Liverpool with so much unemployment and deprivation, the Beatles who has left the city in '63 were an irrelevance. As you rightly say, all that changed in December 1980 and we suddenly realised what we had lost.

      It is a term used by some musicologists relating to the variation of the tempo in the middle eight that makes a change in the rhythm.

      Once they had got into the swing of 1963 and expanding their requirements, it was more about who to add as opposed to replacing the main four. That was never in question, but they were happy to step back if the arrangement needed it eg She's Leaving Home on which none of them played.

    Thank God they got Ringo! He tailored the drumming to suit each song perfectly. Sometimes I pick Beatle tracks just to listen to Ringo's drumming. Years ago, listening to "The Ballad of John and Yoko" I knew something wasn't quite right and later realised it wasn't Ringo but Paul playing. I love the Fab Four and I believe in Beatles.

    Pete should've demanded money for the firing. His two years of work to get the contract and then fired once they got it was necessary but Epstein has the means to make it right and made no effort. Pete should've got paid 5% perhaps for Beatles revenues off the records for the first two years.

    • @BrightmoonLiverpool
      @BrightmoonLiverpool วันที่ผ่านมา

      That would have been fair, but this was a ruthless decision. Pete got poor legal advice and tried to sue Brian for wrongful dismissal, which of course was wrong. Thankfully, Anthology meant that he got royalties and finally got his money from the Beatles.
