    Great video. Indeed a very historic night in Beatles history. The day that Ringo joined the band was the very day they became the Fab Four that we all know and love today

      It all changed, and was almost a new group to the old Beatles from the previous two years.

    Fascinating, wish I could have been there. Holding out for time-travel, this stop will be on my short list.

      It is out of the way on the Wirral in Port Sunlight. Well worth a visit.

    Of course, Ringo had played with the Beatles before, substituting for Pete Best on occasion. That's how they knew he was the drummer for them, resulting in Pete's firing two days before this gig.

      It made integrating him easier, though of course they were playing the covers that most groups did then too. He soon settled in nicely, but it was still a gamble.

    David, thanks for this . I know this might be a hard question to answer, but it concerns the blue wallpaper surrounding the stage area on your visit . Have you ever seen any colour photos that confirms that this is the same wallpaper that was on the surrounding area of the stage when The Beatles appeared at Hulme Hall in 1962?

    • @BrightmoonLiverpool
      @BrightmoonLiverpool  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Never seen any colour photos from Hulme Hall, just black and white ones of Gerry and the Pacemakers, so cannot say for sure.

      @@BrightmoonLiverpool Thanks David. I’ve seen those black and white shots of Gerry and also The Beatles at Hulme Hall. I think the only colour photos would be at some function/ wedding at the venue in the 1960s. By chance someone might have taken a shot of the group or dance band playing that day on the stage. By the way, a Port Sunlight local told me years ago that she saw The Stones playing at The Girls Club, over the road from the fountain in the village. This would have been around 1963/64 when they were relatively unknown. I’ve not come across any evidence of this. I know they performed at The Cavern and in Birkenhead and New Brighton during this era. You will probably know that Lennon had relatives down the road from Port Sunlight in Rock Ferry that he often used to visit. Believe it or not, John and Yoko were spotted in the village looking for directions for Hulme Hall. This was during that 1969 period when he took Yoko to see Wales and then ended up in a car crash in Scotland.

    Great stuff, David! Question: starting from the day after Pete's last night on drums (which was at The Cavern) for The Beatles, how many Beatles' shows were there up to Granada TV show at The Cavern on, August 22nd, and who (Ringo or Hutch) played drums at each of those shows during that several day stretch?

    • @BrightmoonLiverpool
      @BrightmoonLiverpool  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Hutch sat in on the Wednesday night in Chester (after which he was offered the job of replacing Pete!) and then Ringo played on 18th August before then making his debut at the Cavern.

      @@BrightmoonLiverpool Okay cool, but please tell me if the following timeline is correct:
      *Wednesday, August 15th:* During the day Brian calls Ringo and offers him the job as Pete's permanent replacement, which Ringo accepts. However, Ringo says he cannot start 'til Saturday, August 18th. So Brian does not give the bad news to Pete that day, as they have a show at that night at The Cavern. Pete plays The Cavern, his last show as The Beatles' drummer.
      *Thursday, August 16th:* Brian told Pete after the show the night before to meet him in his office the next morning on this day, Thursday the 16th. Pete thinks the meeting is routine, wherein Brian picks Pete's brain about various venues and pay rates, as Pete had previously been The Beatles' booking agent. But that's not what the meeting is about, and Brian drops the bombshell on Pete, telling him the boys want him out, and it's already been arranged that Ringo will join the band on Saturday the 18th in Port Sunlight. Brian asks Pete to play later that night, Thursday the 16th, in Chester, one last time for The Beatles. Pete, stunned by the news, agrees. However, Pete does not show up for the Chester gig, and in a pinch Brian asks Hutch to fill-in. After the gig, Brian asks Hutch to be the permanent drummer for The Beatles. Hutch says no, that Pete is his mate and he won't do the dirty on him. Had Hutch agreed, the offer made to Ringo the day before would have been retracted, and The Fab Four would've gone down in history as John, Paul, George and Hutch.
      *Friday, August 17th:* No Beatles show scheduled. Mersey Beat announces "Beatles Change Drummers!", and that Pete will join Lee Curtis & The All-Stars beginning September 10th. The issue also announces that The Beatles will fly to London on September 4th for their first official recording session as signed artists.
      *Saturday, August 18th:* Ringo's first show as The Beatles' permanent drummer in Port Sunlight.
      *Sunday, August 19th:* No Beatles show scheduled
      *Monday, August 20th:* No Beatles show scheduled
      *Tuesday, August 21st:* No Beatles show scheduled
      *Wednesday, August 22nd:* Ringo's second show as The Beatles' permanent drummer, and his first as their permanent drummer at The Cavern. The show is filmed by Granada TV, which had been arranged well in advance by Mona and Pete Best. Pete is not there, obviously, and just like in Port Sunlight, cries of, *"Ringo Never - Pete Best Forever!"* are heard throughout the venue. Word of the betrayal against Pete has spread widely at this point and George Harrison is assaulted with a head butt just off the stage, giving him a shiner so ugly that it's still visible a fortnight later at EMI in the band's first session as signed artists.

      @@Cosmo-Kramer great job. Hutch said in later years that he was never sorry he turned Epstein down. Course, what else would he say? Glad it was Ringo, I wish he had been the first choice, but they did get it right, so that’s what matters. I don’t believe Hutch would have fit as well personality wise, but I have no way of knowing that for sure. Ringo got along with everyone and had the great sense of humor that matched the others. Great drummer to boot.

    • @BrightmoonLiverpool
      @BrightmoonLiverpool  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It would be mainly covers, which was typical then, plus they had no opportunity really to practice with Ringo.
