  • Why Ringo Starr is a great drummer is a topic often up for debate. Was he just a lucky guy in the right place at the right time?
Gary Astridge, Ringo Starr's drum curator who works closely with Ringo on many projects, is being joined by drummer and Ringo Starr fan Rob Brian for a new UK event.
The event is called "The Legendary Drums and Drumming of a Starr", where Gary and Rob will be discussing Ringo Starr's drumming style and explaining why Ringo Starr is a great drummer.
In conversation with David Bedford, Gary and Rob discuss Ringo's contribution to the Beatles and give a glimpse into what the roadshow will be about.

I will put it this way, the short, sweet, drum fill Ringo did on the single release of 'Get Back' impacted me and affected my drumming more than ANYTHING Neil Peart did in his entire career. THAT IS GREAT!

I think we can make a list as long as your arm of the drummers inspired by Ringo. That makes him a legend!!

Really great interview! Everyone's comments about the history behind Ringo's drumming through his childhood, Butlin's, Hamburg and so on are so insightful and add to the whole picture. Totally agree with David's comment about what Ringo did with such a basic kit. Ringo has the ability to tune into a song, feel what that song needs AND the technical ability to contribute just that. These are the qualities of a true artist.

The late, great, Buddy Rich would find fault with this, no doubt! Ringo is considered a "great" drummer because of his sheer simplicity. He showed MILLIONS of young men/boys that they too could be drummers, in a band, and perform with the simplest of chops. The entire '60's Pop/Rock music scene was predicated on the look and sound of The Beatles, and Ringo was 1/4 of that presentation. "Great" is a relative term and is measured in a variety of ways - Buddy Rich was GREAT, and he'd be the first to tell you that! Joe Morello was great, and those time signatures prove it. Dino Danelli was great, and watching his disciplined, perfect, execution makes it obvious. Ringo is great. Everyone knows his name and his band and ALWAYS will.

Totally agree with you. Some have said that technically, maybe he wasn't up there with someone like Rich, but he reinvented the role of the drummer and brought a feel for the rhythm that few have equalled, and yes, what an inspiration!

Buddy Rich hated Rock & Roll and hated Rock drummers. But I saw him interviewed when I was a kid, and somebody mentioned Ringo. Buddy said, "Ringo is adequate. Nothing more!" Knowing how Buddy felt about Rock, it was then that I knew without a doubt that Ringo was excellent. 🙂
