    I hoped that this was the reason why I was never able to appreciate Neural plugins. Not even one. But nope, I can't stay satisfied even by adjusting the input correctly, I always feel that there is something wrong with the dynamics, especially how it reacts to the touch of the pick in palm mutes. They work great in mixes, but for me, feeling the instrument is absolutely essential and in this, I find even my Spark MINI more responsive. Am I crazy? I see everybody happy with NeuralDSP plugins and I feel so alone in this lol For me, the plugin that comes closest to my FM3 is ToneX, I tried it yesterday and I was absolutely shocked by how good it sounds. The problem with the FM3 is that reamping is very inconvenient compared to a plugin, but with ToneX I think I've found a solution

    Nice playing bro! IK missed a trick in another area, they didnt capture his JSX rig which was all over the Crystal Planet album.That Mini Collosal capture was a waste of time IMO. Also another issue (Quote me if im wrong) but you can't use your own IR's with these amps right? For me thats a deal breaker if so.

    David, I just happened on this one last night and tried it immediately. Goodness, night and day difference! My current interface (M Audio Duo) wasn't on the spreadsheet but the idea of lowering the input gain was massive. My problem previously was that there's too much presence and the pick attack totally ate up the volume. Zeroing down on the input gain gave me a much clearer tone.

      I think Joe peaked on Cristal Planet / Engines of Creations and made a great job on Strange Beautiful Music. Then his albuns began to vary greatly in quality, with great songs lost between several fillers. Then he peaked again on Unstoppable Momentum, a major album, with an incredible band backing him up. After that, he again released very heterogenous records. His last one (The Elephants of Mars) is great, with cool arrangements, but the best solos on the album are from Ray (the keyboard player of his current band). I love Sach and there are things that he is just a major master, GOAT level, guitarist. But he's also limited in many areas, and have never shown any urge to change that. He's stuck on his comfort zone, for the good and for the bad. It's up to us to accept it and just enjoy or stay away.

  • @DavidBeebee

    Still kinda on the fence when it comes to the creative utility and tweak ability of captures, but man, the plug-n-play nature of a great capture (like these are) is phenomenal! I got massively inspired playing around with these tones and dug out a Satch style ballad I started working on in 2002 to finish recording using some of my favourite capture in the collection. Feels a bit like IK buried the lead in marketing this however, as to anyone of my generation the 90s era Satch tones are the pinnacle of his recorded work, and, it seems like they’ve captured some of the exact amp and speaker combinations that Joe used on Crystal Planet and the self-titled record! The tones of the Marshall heads and 5150 with the vintage Marshall stained cabs are very reminiscent of CP, and some of the older fender combo give that earthier blues vibe of Cool#9 and IF. Anyways, tons of fun trying to get my fingers to remember how to do the rolling ball of mercury type legato! If you’ve tried the IK/TONEX JS Amp vault let me know your fav captures to try, and what’s your fav Satch tones? Cheers 🐝🎸🙏🏻

    I've always had the gain knob at 0, I never thought about it but I guess in the back of my head I didn't want any more colouration from the preamps, and if I needed more gain or less on the amp plugin I would just use the input gain on the plugin.

    Hi David. This is impressive. However I noticed you have logic. Were you not tempted to drop the track into logic and use the new AI to get the isolated guitar track or do you think there is benefit in being able to pick out the parts and learn from the full track alone. Sometimes it's hard if things are buried in the mix.

    _I_ don't get it wrong! That's because I can't play it at all... Anyway, this is great playing by David: the performance at the start of this video is probably the cleanest I've _ever_ seen this solo played, so I'll slow it down to learn it once and for all (and see how long it takes me to give up!).

  • @1man1guitarletsgo
    @1man1guitarletsgo 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

    That's an interesting approach. When I work songs out, I usually head to TH-cam to find the clearest version, then Ultimate Guitar for the chords and lyrics uploaded by someone else, which I copy & paste into Word. Then I listen, slow the video, and correct anything that doesn't seem right. Both the chords and lyrics are often wrong, so a good ear is handy. The whole song must fit on one sheet of A4 paper, so that when I'm at the gig I can have the songs in a folder, in setlist order. I've depped with bands on and off for years, and initially it was very easy because I tended to play a lot of Country and 60s, and could wing it. More recent dep gigs have been challenging, because of the styles of music, and song complexity. For anyone considering depping, it is completely non-cost-effective, but it's good fun and it keeps the brain active!

    Thanks for showing your process! I learn songs without my instrument as well, but not so much by choice but because I’m trying to make best use of my time on the subway everyday (or the ‘chewb’ as y’all call it). Then I’ll check with my instrument next chance I get. Find I retain things much better that way than if I played through the song with my instrument from the start.

    Awesome video! I am in the process myself to learn a new setlist for a gig in a couple weeks as well and found this super useful! Thanks a million! So, once you narrow down the song chord charts and guitar parts, what is your approach to memorise it for the long run? Do you practice the whole song every now and then? Or do you take your time to memorise each section before jumping in to the next? (My biggest challenge is to memorise to the point of not looking at charts at all, it takes me a while 😅) Cheers!

    • @DavidBeebee
      @DavidBeebee หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Rodrigo, glad you found it useful. Long term muscle memory just kinda happens the more it's in the set or crops up in other sets. Atrophy is just inevitable though if it's not regularly being played. That's another benefit of going through this type of ear training and chart writing process. It's much quicker to get back if you lose it after a while. Generally I try to chunk the song itto broader sections, and remember it as chord function numbers not root letters. That also helps for changing keys last minute with different singers!

    is this stretch longer/harder than the stretch to the outro solo to bark at the moon?

    Nice, but i think he was playing the second D of each pattern (on the way back up) on 19th fret of G string. Only the first E is picked. The othe 4 notes are all hammer from nowhere. 12 19 15 12 19 12 19 15 12 19

    Was it Holdsworth inspired? I know Ed was a big fan but that big stretch dates back to the 75-76 demos...which that stretchy riff is on...technically Holdsworth did put his first album and I think only album he put out until Ed started getting him back in the studio in 1982... Maybe Ed said it was and maybe the riff is in your mind different than the ice cream riff, but seems pretty similar

      Hey Mark, I'm not 100% sure about this specific lick, but my guess is that this type of wide stretch legato playing was inspired by Allan. You can see AH doing this kind of thing with soft machine and other right back to early 70s. But I guess it could also be one of those convergent evolution things too though, two guys developing something similar independently either side of the Atlantic.

    Fantastic video! My obligatory hot take is that Eddie lifted this from Holdsworth's "In the Dead of Night" solo on the first UK album. He rips some similar stuff on "One Foot Out the Door" too.

      Thanks bro! Cheers for the tip on One foot out the door, not as familiar will check out. Man, it's just mind blowing digging back into AH, at how early he was doing truly unbelievable stuff. Have you seen the Soft Machine live vids in 1974?

    Hey David that annotation on your iPad was super cool. If you don't mind me asking, what software are you using with the pencil and what do you used to record your iPad video? Thanks! Great tone and playing too by the way. I think the lick was definitely inspired by A.H.

      Hey thanks. Sure, I'm using an app called Explain Everything. Annoyingly they've moved to a subscription service recently, but it is a very good app for annotating and screen recording on the iPad.

    Great Vid Dave! Love the rhythmic accuracy, everyone gets that wrong. Your fingering at the end is spot on. That D on the B string IS played with a hammer on from nowhere on the G making the fingering symmetrical and basically feeling like a stretchy version of the standard fives style idea found on eruption, somebody get me a doctor and lots of others. Essentially one note on the high E, 3notes on the B and hammer on the G. Eddies only picks the first note on these types of things. I have loads of pre 1st album bootlegs and he’s already playing these ideas in 77! Before he uses tapping! Crazy!!! He ends up with a 5 note pattern played across sextuplets, so the rhythm back cycles/displaces by one note. Again it’s all over his playing, and happens in the tapping section of this solo. Great stuff buddy! 👍🏻

      Thanks Jim, sounds like you're an expert on this, appreciate the detailed comment! So, you're saying like a combination of my version 1 and 3 would be the bang on way he's executing it? Hammy's from nowhere on both the B and G strings?

    • @GuitarCareerCoach
      @GuitarCareerCoach หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DavidBeebee I’m a total nerd with all those guys. I remember seeing lots of tabs in magazines for stuff like eruption and beat it and always thought it seemed really unplayable. And generally it’s because the fingerings are wrong, and don’t take into account that most of these guys don’t play ball to “modern conventions” of scale patterns and whatnot. They find a specific “finger pattern” that can be played quickly, then manipulate the harmony to fit a scenario. But keep the same arrangement of notes on a string or general shape based strategy, if you get my drift.. for example, the fingering as I described being a lone note on a high E string, then 3 notes in the middle on the B and a lone note on the G string. So for eruption it’s open high E, then G E and B played as 8 5 0, then Eb on the G string at 8.. so it’s the same principle, but different spacing in Beat It. But, yes your version 1 and 3 is exact! Hope that makes sense! 🤣🤣 sorry for the ramble! I never comment on TH-cam stuff tbh, but I thought it was a great video and I loved how exact you were with the details etc!
