Great content and I love that song: “Frosty Morn”! Your videos have been very helpful for me and my hiking buddy, as we’re planning to thru hike the OHT next year!
Thanks for watching! Awesome to hear the videos are helpful in y’all’s planning of a OHT thru-hike! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Very nice job. Professional. Thanks for all your effort and time you put into this!
Thanks for watching, @@jhulin9018 It’s my pleasure, hope you enjoyed.
I really enjoyed this video Chris! Looks like another that I'm going to have to hit very soon. Merry Christmas to you and your family too! ---- John
Thanks for watching, John! I really enjoyed this section. As good or better than anything east of Hwy 7, IMO.
Cool video. Congratulations on personal best mileage.
Thank ya sir! I think I had another 4-5 miles in me. Trying to build up to bigger mile days - plan is to get a lil more aggressive on the Ozark Trail in the spring. Thinking 12-14 days. Have you hiked the Sylamore section? I loved it. Thanks as always for watching & commenting.
@DixonHikes No, I have not hiked that section. I've been wanting to drop in at the 165-mile mark and go north. I have been looking at weather data for January going try and get the last 113 miles on the Ozark Trail.
Man!! That spring creek rock garden destroyed my feet!!! My shoes were pretty worn though lol.
Definitely a lil rocky from Spring Creek to Moccasin, but man, what a gorgeous stretch of trail. I really enjoyed this section!
Very nice. At 11:25, "...the only other sound's the sweep of easy wind..." - Robert Frost.
What up Chris man! This is Doc’! I’m jelly af man! Workin workin up here and racking up some PTO for spring
Doc! My man, good to hear from you. What ya got planned for the spring?
@ I’m gonna try to thru hike the OHT if I can squeeze it in
Hell yeah, brother! You’re gonna love it.
Hey, awesome video!(as usual) im heading to this trail this weekend and was wondering if you had any recommendations since i wont have time to do the whole trail..like maybe your favorite section or two of this trail? Thanks Alex
Thanks, Alex! Man, it’s ALL good from Allison to Barkshed. You can’t go wrong. But, Barkshed to Gunner Pool or Allison to Blanchard if I had to choose one section. Have a great hike! I just got back from hiking the Sylamore Section of the OHT. Hiked through the Cripple Turkey TH, & was tempted to turn south towards Allison! North Sylamore Creek is one of my favorite hikes on 🌎. Enjoy!
Great video. Good to see you back!
Hey thanks, Eric. I did a 6-day trip in the Ouachitas back in late October, didn’t film though. Heading back out tomorrow & will document that trip. Thanks for watching.
Dixon.. How can I message you. Have lots of questions about your hikes.
Shoot me an email, KJ: sooiepig311@yahoo.com
The Butterfield Trail was my first training hike. Great trail and good choice of music Gangstagrass! Awesome video.
Thank ya, Sir! The BHT is definitely a good trail for a first backpacking trip. Been on my to-do list for years, glad I decided to drive up & check it off. Went with the instrumental Gangstagrass so my wife wouldn’t give me the 👎🏼. Ha! Hoping to get back out next week - lil Sylamore section of the OHT action. Spring Creek to Matney Knob. 🤞🏼
Hi Chris. Great to see you on the trail again. Another nicely filmed and scenic video. Question: What is that "bag" I see attached to your pack's sternam strap? I'd like to get one like that. Hope you and your family have a very blessed and enjoyable holiday time. God Bless!
Hey thanks, Ken! Always good to be on trail, any trail. I did a 6-day trip in the Ouachita’s back in late October. Took only pictures. A no video, R&R trip. Was great. It’s a 4&1 utility pack from Zpacks. Still going strong after almost 10 years. I prefer it over hip belt pockets, which I don’t have on my pack. Phone/snacks/sunglasses anything I want handy goes in there. My first thanksgiving off work in 4 years. Enjoyed the day with my family! Hope you & yours did as well.
@@DixonHikes Thanks Chris - I'll check it out.
Awesome video as always
Thanks for watching, brother! Hope y’all had a great Thanksgiving.
Nice loop, Chris. Any other campsites that would have been better now that you've hiked the whole thing; or was that junction camp the best spot logistically?
Thanks, Cam. Nice lil overnighter if you’re ever in NWA. I would definitely camp @ Junction again, unless it was on a weekend - probably a zoo down there! Ha. 10 miles of the BHT is actually in the Ozark National Forest, so technically you can camp anywhere. Really nice campsite in Quail Valley @ mile 5.7 (counterclockwise option). Rock hole camp is small, right off trail. Several other sites along Blackburn creek. Perfect hammock campsite right above Butterfield Falls @ mile 10.7 with a nice view. Another good one is around mile 14.6 right on Lee Creek. Not sure if it’s “legal” as it’s in the state park boundary. Hope this helps!
Im going dec 21. Super excited!!
Nice, bro! It’s a good hike, with some nice features. Some nice creek action for sure. With a lil more rainfall, I think there would be several more cascading waterfalls out there.
Ah yes, the blessed relief when the blistering heat finally fades out. Nice trip video.
Thanks, Don. Last minute decision to go up there, glad I did. Nice lil hike. The heat seems to stick around a lil longer each year - summer straight to winter! Hope y’all had a great Thanksgiving.
Nice! Happy Thanksgiving, Chris!
Thanks, man. Hope you & yours had a great Thanksgiving as well. ‘Preciate ya watching.
Always loved NWA. Great hikes around Devil’s Den. A couple years ago, I almost stepped on a timber rattler there. You’re right - great time to hike in Arkansas in November. No ticks (mostly dormant at least), no chiggers, no poison ivy, no snakes.
Oh, there's poison ivy... Lol... Don't sit up against a tree with a vine and rub the small of your back all over it like i inadvertently did one time in the winter... That was not fun.
Thanks, Joshua! Was a last minute decision to drive up there - glad I did. Check another one off the list. Beautiful state park. I’ve hiked all the other trails @ Devil’s Den. Late fall through spring is the only backpacking season around these parts, IMO. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
Cool looking place
One of many great State Parks we have here in Arkansas. Thanks for watching, Jonathan - hope you had a great thanksgiving.
I’m a state above u in MO. Been wanting to come down in that area. Looks killer
Lots of good hiking @ Devil’s Den. I’d also recommend checking out the Buffalo National River area, or anywhere on the Ozark Highlands Trail. I’ll be up your way in the spring - planning a thru-hike of the Ozark Trail in March.
@ cool. OT is a good trail. I’m in St. Louis so it’s pretty close. Not many re-supply places. That’s the only bad part. But you will dig it
I’m looking forward to it. Planning on dropping a food cache @ Hwy 60 trailhead near Van Buren. And another @ Brushy Creek Lodge, where I plan on staying a night. Unless you can recommend a better strategy?
Such beautiful country! I used to spend a lot of my spare time in the Arkansas mountains.
Indeed, Brian! SO fortunate to have both the Ouachita’s & the Ozarks in my back yard. Thanks for watching.
I love white rock. We love disperse camping around there and hiking.
This is awesome. My husband and I are thinking of taking a couple weeks off next year and doing it! Hoping it will be a good kickoff of our first multi day backpacking trip.
Thanks, Ashley! Y’all should definitely do it. Multi-day backpacking trips are good for the soul! Thanks for watching, & welcome to my lil channel. The Ouachita Trail would also be perfect for y’all’s first big trip together.
@ we also thought about the ouachita trail, but I have seen so many negative things about it, between people saying it’s hard to follow to majority of it being bush whacking, im just not too sure with it being our first multi day backpacking trip.
I’ve hiked both of them, twice. I would say the OHT is the more difficult, and the OT is better maintained. Much easier resupply options & bailout points on the OT as well. Both are amazing hikes. If y’all are looking for a wilderness experience, I’d go with the OHT. If y’all are looking for more of an AT like thru-hike experience - I’d go with the OT.
@ that helps a lot! We may just do the OT then! We are planning in summer of 2026 to do the Colorado trail, so at some point between then well more than likely do both the OHT and the OT…
Hey Chris. I completed the LOViT Trail this past weekend. It’s a shame you got stormed out as this is an amazing and highly underrated trail. In my opinion, the best section is from Crystal Springs to Brady Mtn. It’s good to see your channel is growing. Thanks for promoting the Arkansas trails. #WPS
Nice, Joshua! I really enjoyed the 14 miles or so I hiked on the LOViT. That was a WILD morning, riding out a tornado warning & multiple severe thunderstorm warnings. I’ll definitely return, possibly this winter. Thanks for the kind words regarding my channel. I break down my purpose of this channel in my final OT thru-hike video. I spent 6 days in the Ouachita’s back in late October. R&R hike with the goal of sleeping more hours than miles hiked, & didn’t film a lick. It was awesome. 😂 I have some hikes planned for the winter, & will document those - along with a thru-hike of the Ozark Trail in the spring. Maybe I’ll see ya out on trail one of these days. Hike on!
Great job, Chris. I am backpacking the Lovit Trail this weekend and my goal is to complete the OT in 2025.
Thanks, Joshua! ‘Preciate you watching. Have a great hike on the LOViT, looks like you’ll have great weather for it.
Also forgot to mention, Woo Pig Sooie! 🐖
GO HOGS! #hornsdown
I love the Ouachitas
Beautiful, babe!
So relaxing. Thx
Beautiful. Thanks, Chris.
Awesome trip! Thanks for sharing your thru hike of the OHT!
Thanks for watching, Chad! I’ll be back out there at the end of the month to pick back up where I left off. Hiking Grinders to Dillards, & Spring Creek to Matney Knob. Hoping for some nice fall colors, & rain!
Thank you for documenting your experience! I plan on tackling this trail in March! PS: Thanks for the trail magic you left on the Highway 9 TH of the Ouachita Trail!! I enjoyed a powerade from your cooler completing the trail on Wednesday!
Thanks for sharing, Chad! It’s the least I can do for a trail that’s done a lot for me. Hopefully that was a nice lil surprise as your hike was coming to an end. Congrats on finishing the OT! The OHT in March is nothing short of magic. You’ll love it.
I’ll be out there next week to check on it, & gather any trash. Should I bring more water? There was a pretty good size pool in Hillary Hollow 2 weeks ago. But we haven’t had a drop of rain since….
@@DixonHikesThank you! It was an incredible experience and your trail magic just added to the adventure in a positive way! I would say bring more water if no rain in the next week. The seasonal water sources were dry besides the creek near the Lake Sylvia Junction until the Maumelle River.
That Hurricane Creek west crossing is absolutely no joke when the waters up! I was out there in March of 2023, and was in tears by the time we reached the other side. I am loving watching your journey! Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for watching, Lacey! My most terrifying experience ever in the backcountry, was trying to cross Hurricane creek. Sub-freezing, above waist high. I thought it was important to caution anyone watching this video to not underestimate this crossing!
Great video, planning on doing this same route for my birthday in the winter
Perfect time to be on the BRT. Have a great hike!
Just spent the whole afternoon watching your hike: loved it and thankyou. Hope to blaze some of this trail in the near future !
Thanks for sharing & watching, Frank! The OT is a great trail, you’ll enjoy it. I’m planning on doing it again in a few years!
Hey Chris, new subscriber here. For any of the trails in Arkansas, do you hang your food or take any preventative measures to reduce bear encounters?
Thanks for the sub@@happycampers6592 I hang my food more times than not, but bears aren’t really in my mind here in Arkansas. Over 1,000 miles hiked in the backcountry & I’ve still yet to see a bear. I hang it to keep the little critters away from me. Odor proof bags have proven to be effective as well.
🔥
As someone planning on thruhiking the OHT thank you for documenting your experience
Thanks for watching, James! Hope these are helpful as you plan your thru-hike of the OHT. If you have any ?’s or if I can help in anyway, reach out!
Great short lover! Glad you enjoyed your day off!
Somebody striping it 😳
I'll be heading back to ERL this fall with my brother. It will be his first ever backpacking trip. Can't wait.
Nice! 58 degree nights in August are rare around here, as you know - I had to take advantage with a quick overnighter. C’mon fall!
I’m assuming you film with your phone, what gimbal do you use? Always enjoy being on the trail with you!😊
Thanks for watching, Big T. Most of this video was shot on a GoPro hero 5 black with the karma grip gimbal. Stabilization has greatly improved on the phones, all my recent videos are shot on iPhone 14Pro.
@@DixonHikes I’m just getting back into the hiking/backpacking after a 25-30 year hiatus. I think I’m gonna try my hand at the videoing and editing. Keep doing what you’re doing, I really enjoy your content.
Man, that’s awesome! I didn’t start backpacking until my mid-30’s. It has become my passion, & an integral part of my life. As far as videos, go for it! Definitely a learning curve when it comes to editing. My only advice is to not chase the algorithm & make the kind of videos you want/like. I don’t watch gear videos, so I don’t make gear videos. I enjoy documenting most of my trips, showing off my home state, and sharing with my family/friends. I’ve even made a few friends on TH-cam in the process. That is the only purpose of my channel. Good luck - if I can help in anyway, please reach out.
Looks like a great trail
It is indeed, Mike. If you enjoyed the Ouachita Trail - you’d love the OHT!
Hey there! Thanks so much for this! I've been scouring TH-cam for months trying to find someone with some experience on this trail. I'm wanting to do a section hike like you did before attempting a through hike. Any chance I could pick your brain for setting up a section hike of the OHT?
Thanks for watching. Absolutely, shoot me an email with any questions you may have. sooiepig311@yahoo.com
Great video! What is the name of the ending song and artist?😊
Hey, thanks! I found that song on iTunes. Ozark Mountains by the BlackBerry Winter Band.
@@DixonHikes I thought that's who it was! They are a local band!!
Is it possible to access those shelters from the lake with a kayak? If the photo at 11:39 was just below the shelter by the lake, it looks pretty marshy. Would not be a great spot to land a boat. I swear, my list of places I want to explore seems to grow more than it shrinks. I need to get out more to check things off my list and spend less time looking into different places because I always end up finding somewhere new I want to go.
So many trails. So little time. Right there with ya, brother. This is a nice lil off the radar loop - the shelters are awesome. I don’t see why you couldn’t roll up to one in a kayak.
Great content. I live in Arkansas, and I will do this trail one day I hope.
Thanks! So many great trails in our home state. Few better than the OHT!
Hi Chris. Watched this again. Still impressed with the great work you did in filming this trail. What an incredible trail with so many waterfalls to see. Great job as always, thankful for your great work!
Thanks, Mr Ken! I’ll do the Foothills Trail again one of these years - want to see it in the spring with ALL those falls rolling!
Hi Chris. Reently heard about this trail, very much enjoyed your great video! Might give this a try. Question: Do you think it is possible to day hike the entire 12+ miles in 1 day? My oldest grandson (age 25) and I are thinking on giving this a try. Keep up the great work!
Hey, Ken! The Fiery Gizzard blew me away, honestly. Just an incredible hike! Yes, I think y’all could do it as a day hike. Start early though. That stretch down & through the Gorge is quite challenging, but spectacular. The “Dog Hole” trail stays up on the ridge & bypasses the Gorge, supposedly easier. But you’d be missing the best part of the trail. IMO.
@@DixonHikes Thank you Chris, appreciate your advice!
Hi Chris. Another great hiking video. I especially enjoyed seeing you walk along The Narrows. Also knowing Father's Day was a few days ago, hope it was a great day for you. I seem to recall you have several children, all teens. I'm thankful for them that their dad sets a good example by walking in the Lord's Creation. It's good for everyone. I have 3 sons, 3 daughters-in-law, 11 grandchildren, and 2 grandson in laws. I'm hoping to do some hiking with my oldest grandson (age 25) this summer/fall. He's a travel nurse so he can schedule some time off. Better do it now while I can, I think he's about to get engaged and married next summer. God Bless you Chris!
Thanks for following along & all the kind words, Mr Ken! Hope you enjoyed the sights & sounds of the OHT. Unfortunately, I spent my Fathers Day working a 12hr shift. But yes, my wife & I are blessed with 5 kids, & now a grandson. I’m not sure I’ll have a backpacker amongst them - but my hope is to inspire them to be adventurous, step out of there comfort zone & do hard & challenging things in life. Whatever they choose to do!
@@DixonHikes As for your Father's Day, you did what a good Dad does, support his family. As for hiking: I found that starting them with short day hikes was a say to see if any interest was in them. Look forward to more of your great work.
Nice I’m doin 3 days in August excited 😆
Man, hope there’s some water flowing out there so you can cool off!
We just watched the entire hike. Very impressive and inspiring, sir.
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed the sights & sounds of the OHT!
