Greetings from Little Rock. Been binging your videos this week since being cooped up from the ice storm. Can't wait to get back out on the trail. Your videos are so relaxing and enjoyable and the next best thing to getting out there myself.
Love to hear it - glad you’re enjoying the videos! It’s definitely not ideal backpacking weather out there currently, but it’s Arkansas. Give it a few days. Ha, thanks for watching.
Hey you made it. Great video. The Smokeys Mountains will test the knees and feet for sure. If all goes well this spring I am going to start at Springer and try to make it to Fontana Dam on the AT.
I should’ve mentioned that I’ve been battling Plantar Fasciitis since April, which made it even more of a test. The first 2 days, with 6 1/2 days of food on my back, kicked my butt! Great trip though. Hell yeah! I may try to knock out Georgia next fall.
Hey Chris, Awesome vlog of the entire Smokies. It was good sharing a shuttle with you at the end of my Smokies trip. Looking forward to more adventures soon going north on the AT hopefully soon. !
Milt! It was good to meet you buddy - looks like you made it home safe & sound. I had a great trip, you had the better weather though! Maybe we’ll cross paths again on the AT. Take care ✌🏼
Great video Chris! Too bad you had so much rain, but but drinking water was not an issue. Which section did you like best: Fontana to Newfound Gap or Newfound Gap to Davenport Gap?
Thanks, Bryan! The rain just added to the experience, made for some great sleep. I enjoyed both sections, really. Less people for sure from Icewater Springs Shelter to Davenport Gap, but the social aspect at the shelters was cool too. That stretch above 5,000ft from Silers Bald to Cosby Knob was awesome.
Great video! I like that you don't sleep in the shelters. I rarely do, and the weather has to be horrible to make me do it. How many miles did you put in that last day?
Thanks James! Yeah, I’m out on shelter dwelling, unless I have too. With Covid, they’re allowing camping around the shelter area. With the side trip to Mt. Cammerer lookout, it ended up being around 18.5 miles for the day. The ride up to Standing Bear saved me .8 & what looked like a pretty good climb. I was DONE. Ha
👍 Good Job! Would’ve been nice to have a little better weather, or at least a few more views for your effort. Awesome video ! Thanks for taking us along !!
Thanks, Michael! Was a hell of a trip - definitely missed out on some of the views, but it was a good experience as I can usually pick & choose my weather on trips closer to home. Made for some amazing sleep! Holler @ me if you make it down to Arkansas this winter, maybe we could match up for a trip. ✌🏼
Great video, Chris! How would you compare that section to the trails in Arkansas? I've only done part of the OHT so far, but I did hike the AT from Clingmans Dome down to the lake on Hazel Creek several years ago. Of course that was mostly downhill. Also, did I hear you say R-Kansas? I thought only people from Kansas pronounced Arkansas that way. :-D
You’ll never hear “R-Kansas” come out of my mouth! 😂 I’d say the OHT, or the OT both are great training grounds for any trail in the Smokies or the AT. Rollercoaster. That stretch above 5,000ft from Double Spring Gap all the way to Cosby Knob is special. Absolutely spectacular. I’m actually heading back to the OHT in the morning for a quick overnighter.
@@DixonHikes Hahaha! I thought I was mis-hearing that. I'd never heard anyone say it like that until I moved to Kansas. They also pronounce the river like that. I think it means "Our Kansas River". LOL Hope to run into you in good ol' Arkansas on the trail some day!

I think what you heard was me saying I was an “Arkansan.” After singing Rocky Top on Rocky Top!
@@DixonHikes Yeah must have been that. Great song. 🙂
Great video. I’m headed to Shuckstack in the morning. Perhaps we will meet on trail sometime
Thanks, Wes. Enjoy that view!
