Nice, I was anxious why my apple grafting didn't work and why only 1 flower bud hardly pushed out while my other plants were doing much better. Now I can tell this is exactly what its suppose looks like in Sydney right now...😂
That’s a great effort to get the fruit to grow in your area Ben 👍
Do you cover your plants for winter?
Hey, no I don’t. I bring a couple of potted ones like cacao and abiu inside though.
Catching up on your videos I was thrilled to see you harvest your first Rollinia. Just like my first custard apples and cherimoyas, they taste bland initially in cooler zones until the tree matures. I'm positive that future fruit will taste like sweet lemon jelly. Well done!!
Thanks George, yes I’m hoping that’s it and they just get better with time.
Spring is happiness for the garden. How old is that Persimmon? I've tried 3 times. They put on some growth then the grafted part dies out. Just planted another one after digging a massive hole and putting the tree in very carefully. Apparently, they've deep tap root and don't like root disturbance. Your area is surprisingly warmer than mine. Peaches here are still quite small and grapes have just started to wake up.
Hey, I put the persimmon in ground in 2020. Never had any issues. This part of the garden had a lot of mulch in it though, we had a gum tree cut down and that’s where the mulch went. Other than that I’ve done nothing special. My peach is a super early variety, so don’t let that fool you! We are close to the river though and I suspect the humidity helps keep the lower temps at bay a bit.
@@sydneyfruitgardening For whatever reason, I had no luck with persimmons. I've put tons and tons of mulch around all trees. Apparently, persimmons have these issues where graft dies for some rootstocks. I guess next plan is to plant the seedlings and graft later.
Great walk around Ben. If you plant all those other plants into the ground I reckon your garden will start to look more like George's garden 😉
I know right! That seems to be the direction it’s going!!
Maybe not a bad thing! Lots of fruit :)
Impressive walk round Ben. Lol if you plant some of those other plants in ground you'll start to look like Georges garden 😉
Was the parent plant a seedling Ben?
I assume so. Most Rollinia is grown from seed. Got it from a fruit I bought either in FNQ or tropical fruit world.
well done mate
maybe you could put a mini greenhouse over them in winter?
Tree does ok over winter, but possibly a large zip lock bag in the fruit could act like a greenhouse. Might try that.
Congratulations on the first fruit, can only get better! I would assume it would be similar to when you get papaya in winter, lacking flavour and sweetness.
Yeah I think they’ll get better in future. First fruits are always notorious for not being the best, main thing is they’re fruiting now.
Rollinia in Sydney is really pushing the boundary. Great effort and hopefully you'll get better fruit as tree matures.
Great effort Ben!
Hmm, looks like the weather of Sydney is warmer than Tokyo because you can grow Rollinia. The ripen fruit in tropics tastes like pudding made from yogurt. Maybe the reason of fragrant is low temperature. However you did well.👍️
Yes in winter we are warmer than Tokyo, and winter is the critical time for these trees survival. I’ve tried the ripe fruit before in the tropics, probably my favourite fruit!
That is fantastic to have gotten fruit. It's grown nicely on espalier and that would help with the wind. Hopefully you get fruit in sync with summer next time
Thanks, yeah i think it will get better over the years. Still happy to have gotten fruit.
Not perfect but very impressive to get anything edible at all Ben 👍
Thanks Brett yeah still happy I fruited it for sure!
your garden looks awesome ,
Same problem... no fruit... it's a very old tree.. maybe 40/50 years old... nice thick and gnarly trunk.... beautiful cool canopy... supposed to have black fruit... in the summer, I would put pillows in the wheelbarrow and my baby grandson, pushing him back and forth under the cool shady mulberry tree... so very calming... he is now 5 years old... and still no ripe fruit... it drops the green fruit... I have taken cuttings and they grow no problems, one cutting is 4 years old, I prune each year, vigorous growth, healthy large leaves, but it too drops the green undeveloped fruit... Also a giant old mango tree in the same proximity, fruited profusely 5 years ago, but no fruit for the past 4 years...
Fabulous tour thanks Ben, its very interesting to see how good most of your plants look there in Winter 👍
Peach tree blossom looks lovely! Do you have much problem with peachleaf curl in Australia?
yeah we do, gave it some dormant spray but it's always a battle.
@@sydneyfruitgardening Shame, guess it's all over. Picking off the affected leaves works for me but then my peach is still small...
Yeah it wasn’t too bad last year, dormant sprays worked well. The bigger problem was the twig borer, I think they’re oriental fruit moth as well as fruit fly.
@@sydneyfruitgardening And there was me thinking you must have it easy with the warmer temperatures down there! I'll stop moaning about my little bit of leaf curl!
Hi Ben. I really enjoy seeing all your fruit trees growing. I’m in the western suburbs of Sydney. Would it be possible to pot up one of those native raspberries that you’re going to pull out and I can swap you something for it? Do you belong to any local garden clubs, permaculture groups etc? Keep on doing your videos. Cheers, Alison. 🪴
hey sure, get in touch with me on instagram if you like: bspargo11
All looking great Ben - can feel your enthusiasm for your garden and you are making excellent use of space.
Thanks mate yes trying to make good use of the space without cramming things in
Lovely , apparently stone fruit is a nightmare to try and keep up here
Yeah they're challenging for sure!
@@sydneyfruitgardening I think I need to harvest my Yarcon. I'm super new to Gardening edible things , lol
@paulstingrayGardening oh yeah they’re almost getting to the end of the time to harvest. I leave them in the ground and pick as needed.
@@sydneyfruitgardening I'll dig them up and have a look then , thanks
Hi Ben! Just found your channel last night and became a new subscriber. Lovely garden. I’m also trying to establish a fruits garden. Can you tell me how old are some of your trees? Fuyu persimmon, mango, Dwarf macadamia, Kampong, Mac’s Golden, lychee, longan and Rollinia, please?
Thanks for subscribing! Yes I can tell you that: Fuyu persimmon: August 2020 planted in ground Dec 2020, Bambaroo Mango October 2022 planted in ground October 2023, Dwarf macadamia Jan 2022 planted in ground Feb 2022, Kampong white sapote acquired and in ground Dec 2021, Mac's golden grafted this year but the one in a pot was grafted April 2023, Erdon Lee Lychee Jan 2022 and in ground Feb 2022, Longan Jan 2024, Rollinia both acquired August 2019, the one near the fence planted in ground Oct 2021 and the one near the bananas planted Dec 2020.
@@sydneyfruitgardening Thanks for the detailed info! 🙏Surprised how quickly they grow. My guess was about 5-6 years. Can you please show us your apple collections one day? Over 30 varieties is amazing. I own a tropic sweet, tropical Anna, (Daley’s)Fuji and Pnkabelle (Bunnings) all dwarves in pots and still young. 😊
update please!
Hey! Yeah I’ll do one soon. Peach tree is flowering as is my white sapote.
How to collect the pollen,Sir? Thx.❤
Get a small container and hold it under neath the flower and tap the flower. Pollen collects in the container. Can store in the fridge for a few days.
Thx again,Sir❤
Nice Ben, the madruno has beautiful new growth like these. I recently got a grafted lucs var. jumbo from my friend Ayesha for my birthday, excited about this one.
Lovely to see , very nice colour to the new growth 👍
Looks good, lots of colour. you gave me a seedling a year or so ago and I can’t remember if you said it was Luke’s or lemon drop? It appears to be less picky than a achacha for me but very slow
Hey, it’s a lemondrop. Funny, I find them more picky than achacha, less cold tolerant. You might’ve got a good seedling!
Damn is that the seedling or grafted?
Seedling. The grafted sent out a flush too, it’s just off to the right of camera. It almost died previously and is just coming back now.
Wo bạn trồng cây xoài vào chậu mà cây phát triển thật tốt 👍.
Thanks! But It’s not a mango, is Lucs garcinia, garcinia vleerackeii.
Hey Ben, im from Penrith and the fruit fly is a shocker do your figs get hit
Hey, no my figs have been ok for the most part. Most other fruit get hit unless I bag them. Lost 90% of my peaches because i didn’t net early enough.
Hi Ben, Nice to hear from you mate. Your garden is looking great mate and some of your recent additions look good. Unfortunately I don’t have any social media, TH-cam was as social as I got. Longan would definitely be the next in line for a permanent in ground position after winter. Once they start pushing they put on plenty of growth. A definite performer in our climate.
Vườn nhà bạn trồng nhiều chuối quá ,buồng chuối rất to 👍.
Thank you yes this is the first year we get so many bananas. Very happy!
Ôi những cây Hồng còn nhỏ đã cho nhiều trả thật tuyệt vời ,bạn rất khéo chăm sóc cây trồng 🌲👍.
Thank you very much!
Great tour Ben, I'm impressed by your cacao, that's one I never succeeded in getting to germinate here 😁
Thanks Brett but I can’t claim that one, I bought them as seedlings from someone up at cairns. But they’ve grown well here so far. They don’t seem to mind being inside and only slowed a little with the cooler weather.
Very helpful video. THANK YOU
What an amazing collection right here in Sydney. Hope most of these ultra tropicals survive through the winters.
Thank you! It’s a bit of an experiment. Some things don’t, and others surprise me with their cold tolerance.
Hey mate, thanks for the tour, it's very enlightening to see what's possible. What did you say that dwarf jackfruit was called? Trying to find something that would do ok in a pot too.
Hey, glad you enjoyed the video, it’s called a Nangka Mini jackfruit.
Thanks for that, I tried typing that into google initially based on what I thought I heard to no success 😅 where did you source these? Couldn't find it on daleys
Hey, yeah search eBay, the seller is on there. Get the grafted one.
Found it! Funnily enough I've bought from them before. Thanks again
Your plants are cranking along! Unfortunately lost my rollinia but have a picone variety coming to replace it. The pouteria seem like a great option for marginal areas that lack the humidity. Did you get your seeds from Bellamy?
Thanks mate! I got these pouteria from someone on the forums. But yes he got them from either Bellamy or Anderson’s. He had excess seedlings which I bought!
G’day Ben Garden is looking good 👍 My sugar plum had some flowers out a couple of weeks ago it’s also confused 🤞for those jabo grafts
Thanks Neil! Yeah confusing weather for the stone fruit atm. Some of my low chill cherries also doing a few flowers. I’m still perfecting my jabo grafting skills. I have more luck when they’re in pots and can keep them out of the sun. If these grafts are successful I’ll plant this one out.
Looking good Ben my persimmon tree got hit by the fruit fly here in Penrith big mistake by me hard lesson to learn
Ah that’s a shame, you have to net everything or use the mesh bags. Only things that have so far proven resistant are black sapote, white sapote and bananas.
on 17 feb i grafted my lucuma and canistel onto each other. no new growth yet but the scions still look good so i'm hopeful.
i think the red daca is the Cavendish
Possibly, same red trunk as red Dacca though, but banana is very different
don't think there blue jave
Yeah I’m doubting it now too. Was bought as such from our friends in kyogle.
Envious of your rollinias! Interesting with the variation between them, hopefully we get a fruit comparison video soon. Mine is reduced to branches with a few small leaves, hopefully can get a bit of growth back before winter so it comes back strong in spring.
What happened to your Rollinia to get reduced to a few branches. Did it grow over summer? Mine gets like that after winter.
Thanks for those updates Ben, all looking good there 👍
Nice update! I'm still waiting for the red dacca to flower, unsure if it ever will. Rollinia fruit looks good, mine has also doubled in size. The first rain in 2 months is coming tomorrow!!
Great, hopefully we both get to try Rollinia this year!!you’ve had a dry summer again, but that’s Melbourne summer isn’t it. Glad you’re getting some rain soon.
I have the same blue Java from Bunnings. They are not blue javas :(.The real blue javas are much larger and have a much stronger blue tinge saw some on the weekend at FOS Rollinia is its own genus with multiple species not just delicioica/mucosa
These are the supposedly dwarf blue Java’s and came from Daley’s. Yeah I was disappointed, nothing like the colour they were meant to be. I think Rollinia as a genus got rolled up into annona a few years back. But yeah I reckon there are a few differences between Rollinias and in Australia they’re all kind of just mixed up I suspect.
Absolutley awesome ! Best wishes from across the pond
