Something I like to tell people when they are on TH-cam learning about mixing is if you think the mix is bad, probably not a good idea to learn from that person. So, for you, if you think my mix is bad, I’m probably not the best person to be taking tips from 😉

@@MixChecks thanks......... One more question, i see you usually send your drums, guitars, keys to the sane reverb........... Please what amount of level are you sending for various instruments into the reverb aux

There’s not really a set level that I do, but a lot of times I just turn it up until I hear the reverb and then back it off a bit.

I like the live feel so the way I typically do it is picking a reverb to be the Room Verb and then sending almost everything to that room sound except low end instruments like Bass and the Sub Kick. I also pick a hall or plate reverb to be the Vocal reverb to add even more to the vocal tracks since the Room verb isn’t really enough to get that beautiful vocal sound 😉

@@MixChecks in your videos you don't show how much you are sending in to the room verb.........please i would like to see a detailed video on that.... Showing how much of the guitars, keys and synth etc

@@MixChecks secondly let's say you are mixing a gospel song that is mostly Vsts ................what would you do in such an instance

I’d treat the VSTs the same as I do a mix with acoustic instruments. Like they are playing there in the room

I could, but I honestly don’t get a lot of clients that are acapella 🙁 There’s also not much to it other than the typical vocal processing. I might leave a little bit more low end in the vocal since there’s no other instruments though.

@@MixChecks you are welcome so what is the best plugins to use is mixing gospel songs.

I’d start with the stock plugins in your DAW. You can get amazing results with just those. Then you can expand your plugin library as you feel you need a certain tool or if you find a certain plugin will speed up a process and make you more efficient.

Could it be because those lower parts have more low frequency content that makes them sound fuller? Maybe try a HPF on the tenors/altos.

Thank you for the encouragement! I really appreciate it. For the level of drums, it’s going to be mostly subjective. I like my drums a little louder so that when they hit the limiter in mastering, they are brought down to a level that I like. However, I have some clients that prefer the drums a little lower in the mix. The biggest thing to ask yourself as you’re going through the mix is “Can I hear the kick?”, “Can I hear the snare?”. If the answer is “no”, then you have a problem. For panning, I like the Overheads panned hard left and right in the drummers perspective with the Tom’s panned 50% left and right. Bass is always in the middle. Lead guitar can be automated between the middle and left or right depending on what they’re playing.

I've handled 4 parts with 4 voices for each part some time back, along with 2 extra contraltos! It was quite an experience and I loved the challenge. Panning them all is a crucial aspect for the vocals to sound wider and robust at the same time.
