    This was a great video. Been following the Gospel series up until now, was amazed by the results. Actually got my first goose bumps listening to a mix in progress. Do still have a lot more to learn. But this is a great series, especially for engineers trying to get in the game of not over compressing everything.
    By the way, you got jokes, without trying to be funny. Is this what they call engineers humour? Thank you for sharing and taking your time to show every step in detail. They were moments I wished you would just cut out all the boring bits, but then I realized the reason you are showing it must be important. So I had to pray to God to give me patience. He did come through. One more video and I think I might have my first.
    Thank you man, really. You God sent. I really needed a fairly decent mix. This ain't snake oil, folks!

      Thanks so much for the kind words! I’ve thought about cutting out the boring parts, but I wanted people to see the full process, especially if I make a mistake or change my mind about a mix decision. Didn’t want to hide anything 😉

    Four tracks for each choir part (4x3=12) and then a choir track. Who knew!! Great I gotta try this!

      I've handled 4 parts with 4 voices for each part some time back, along with 2 extra contraltos! It was quite an experience and I loved the challenge. Panning them all is a crucial aspect for the vocals to sound wider and robust at the same time.

    • @MixChecks
      @MixChecks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d start with the stock plugins in your DAW. You can get amazing results with just those. Then you can expand your plugin library as you feel you need a certain tool or if you find a certain plugin will speed up a process and make you more efficient.

    I have heard some big records where the Alto or tenor sound louder then the soprano vocals and am mixing a song right now where the same is happening , no matter how I try to balance it, the other parts comes out more.
    Any comment on this?

    • @MixChecks
      @MixChecks  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Could it be because those lower parts have more low frequency content that makes them sound fuller? Maybe try a HPF on the tenors/altos.

    how should I pan our vocals? we have 2 of each part

    • @MixChecks
      @MixChecks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like putting the lead in the middle and slightly panning the 2 parts. So if you have alto/ tenor, I’d do alto 1 and tenor 1 25% to the left. Then do alto 2 and tenor 2 25% to the right.

    • @od_muziki
      @od_muziki 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MixChecks If you do not mind me asking, how would you pan 3 separate mono backing voc's (alto, tenor, soprano) and 1 lead, arranged exactly like the vocals here?

    Sounds like the choir was already heavily processed.. they're even panned in a way although the tracks aren't..

    • @MixChecks

      I don’t know about processed, but they came in as stereo tracks so they definitely could have some panning going on.

    • @MixChecks
      @MixChecks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry about that. Here's the steps in the video:
      1:40 - bussing all the choir tracks
      4:30 - Adding SSL channel strip to bus
      4:45 - Turning off the Gate
      4:46 - Adding compression (to even out the levels and give it the compressed sound.)
      4:53 - Rolling off the low end with hi-pass filter (Don't need the low end for vocals)
      5:05 - Adding some high end EQ for sparkle
      6:04 - Explanation of what I did with the SSL
      6:44 - Reducing some low-mids (To get rid of the boxy sound)
      7:07 - Adding more compression (to smooth out the levels even more)(fast attack, fast release for vocals)
      9:06 - Sending them to the FX
      9:53 - Explaining overall level decisions
      Hope that helps bring a little clarity to everything. Thanks for watching.
