The simplicity is what made me subscribe. Other mixers will make it look so complicated by talking too much. These vids are straight to the point.

That’s the goal. After every series I still think, “How can I make this simpler?”. I have some ideas and we’ll see if they pan out 😉

Wuppaaaa, nearly started the guitar mix in the same video bad guy :D As usual good video, though it does not prevent me to be bad sadly. I "finalized" my 13 mix revision of this damn Megadeth cover and it is still trash (not trash metal just trash). Can you help me Zakk ? Im so frustrated I wanna let go.

@@MixChecks hmm should I bounce to one track and send it through mixcheck.com ? Is that correct ? I do not use logic.

Sure that’s an option if you just want me to check out the mix. If you want me to check out the individual tracks, I guess I’ll need a download link

So I got a project last week to mix. Its gospel. The drums were sent in as a single stem..its cool, bass is ok.
My only problem was the instruments(mostly keyboards....Piano, synths, pad, bell, organ)
The instruments keep cancelling. Like in mono, I could not get clarity. So I checked the phase and found out the piano was out of phase on the sides. It gets in phase when I make it mono.
    QUESTIONS:
    1. How is that possible? Because it was a midi instrument.
    2. Can I mono all my instruments and just pan them around for width?
    3. I tried to study a pro track. It has less instruments between 600hz - 3000k. If I multiband compress that range, I tend to loose fullness from my instruments. What can I do?
    4. Do you use mid/side Eq on instruments?
Sorry bout my many questions. I am just tired of the instruments.

That's a bummer about the drums. Those are my favorite thing to mix lol.
      1. How did you check the phase? Because if it's out of phase it would cancel when summed to mono not get better. Hearing this brings up other questions like: How are you monitoring your mix? Are your speakers out of phase? Do you have a phaser effect plugin somewhere? Or do the keyboard sounds have a phaser effect built in?
      2. You can, but it might make some of the instruments less exciting.
      3. That's a pretty wide range to not have anything. You'll lose basically all the energy in your mix. Maybe focus on a narrower band. like 600-800Hz.
      4. Nope. I've actually never used any sort of mid-side processing. I know lots of people do and I'm not against it, I've just never used it personally.

@@MixChecks Unfortunately, I monitor on my earphone/earpiece. Still saving up for a pro headphone(open back), then my laptop speakers too.
I used span to check the phase and paz analyser. The piano was hitting -1 on its own. When I reduced the side or made it mono, it was +1 in phase.
I think I will need to ask the producer if he had any plugins on the piano...cos its a main groove in the song.
And for drums, which will you prefer? One single stem or individual stems? And why.

@@MixChecks I think I will pan the piano to the left and make a seperately processed double on the right for width.

Does it sound out of phase? Or is that just what the meters are telling you?
What process are you using the "reduce the side" or make it mono?

@@MixChecks The meters are telling me.
For the sides, I used Fabfilter Pro Q3 in linear mode. Turned the low cut to sides and moved it completely to the right it.
