Unboxing and Reviewing the Stetson Sturgis Crushable Wool Felt Outdoor Hat
In this video, the ol’ History Nerd unboxes and reviews the Stetson Sturgis Crushable Wool Felt Outdoor Hat, which retails for $125…and is grossly overpriced at that amount. We take a look at the features of the hat, compare it to the Stetson Bozeman Crushable Outdoor Hat, and discover that right out of the box, the sweatband is coming apart, which seems to be a common issue with the Sturgis. You’ll get a good dose of our traditional humor along with some outrage at the poor quality control of Stetson.

Unboxing the Stetson "Boss of the Plains" Cowboy Hat - A Disappointing Purchase

We unbox and review the Stetson "Boss of the Plains" cowboy hat, which is the current version of the original hat that John B. Stetson designed in the 1850s. The 10X Stetson Open Road Hat vs. The 6X Stetson Open Road Hat - A Buyer's Guide and Comparison
My dad has put many miles on open roads over the years. It cracks me up to think about him wearing one that was stained with sweat dirt and hydraulic oil, the brim pulled down hard enough to keep it from blowing off as he rode his motorcycle down the highway. Some people get really particular about their hats, he always just wore the hell out of them.
Lots can be gained thru osmosis. Yes sir. I think you found your daily wearer.
You look like a rockstar. Nice review.
The more I look at this hat, it looks like a Stetson Seneca (with a slightly different band)
I have a Seneca and even posted a video about it. The Reagan hat is much larger. The Seneca has a 3-1/2 brim, for example, and the Reagan hat has a 4-inch brim.
I have had 3 Resisistol hats. All failed. The bands always start to flake. Good looking hats, but the last one I only wore 7 days before failing. Never again.
You are like me I tell it like it is, I enjoyed it very much, my video has 120k views in 12 days, it is called real cowboy hat vs fake cowboy hat, and I got some saying what does it matter, and I thought you just don’t get it.
I'm getting a new Stetson Silver Belly for Christmas. It looked really nice.
I appreciate the visual aids. It also made me laugh.
well it's $40.00 hat want more pay more, panama straw you may not care for but i wear beaver all year,
I agree with you, you get what you pay for when it comes to cowboy hats.
I was in the Army 35 years. Their green color is O.D. Green or olive drab green. I like your comment about the high school slut. I married one and it has its benefits.
That looks great on you. Thanks for the history.
Much like Jimmy swaggart 😂😂
You are a genius sir. Enjoy your Stetson videos.
Are you a round Oval or a long oval in your straw? Does that mean anything when you purchase a felt hat? Thank you for your knowledge. Now I know what a butt load is.
Great video, I enjoy your reviews and your commentary
It’s not weathered. It’s Mexican palm leaf. $25.00 at Boot Barn
It's called the LBJ go to hell hat.😁
The new hat looks great on you. Stretch it out. That is a really good song. You would like.
You are a genius with a sense of humor. Anyone that says nuts and tallywacker in the same sentence gets a like.
Please do more boots reviews!!
The diction in which you speak is very cool. I like how you say "beewts" lol
Thanks! I grew up in the South, and that’s just how we pronounce it!
@historynerdsmancave7567 I'm from the DFW area in Texas. It's funny all the southern states have their unique sound. God bless and hope y'all have a Merry Christmas
Great video, brother! I dig the channel. Consider me subscribed.
Not too difficult: go to a hat store with these in stock (a mom & pop near me has hundreds), try some on, find one that works (shape, color, fit), buy it. A very similar (black) BotP is my favorite hat out of many western hats (and others) in my collection.
It ain’t that easy when you wear a size 7-3/4, which few stores even carry, Chief. Because so few of us wear a hat that big, stores don’t stock them because they don’t sell.
Just wondering if in order to review more hats if tou could order som in and after the review put them up for sale to your viewers? Just a thought. Love the channel. Cheers!
I wear a huge 7-3/4 size hat, and I doubt many viewers need hats that big. Would be a great idea if I had an average head, but God put a watermelon on my neck.
I just bought the same exact hat but I happen to be 5 foot 11 165 pounds so I figured for somebody roughly my size the hats gonna look perfect
The good old Bangora is not like that
You could have made the video without the reference to a nazi. People that don't know, Dr warner von bron, who this guy clearly holds very high on a pedestal, was a nazi doctor.
I was today years old when I learned that the phase is brass “tacks” not brass “tax”……great review. Thanks for sharing👍
Aww this is disappointing to hear about stetson's outdoor hats. It seems like the Jackson is the only decent one from the line and while I love mind! I just would like something with a bigger brim for the outdoor hiking and camping trips. Glad to see you back friend, I always enjoy your content and honest takes!
Love wearing mine & compliments never STOP!!
I am looking at the Open Road Hat, but I will wear mostly casually. So will the Royal Deluxe be the better choice?
In all candor, I sold my Royal Deluxe and wear my 6X OR almost daily with both jeans and suits. It’s a very versatile hat. But you might want to opt for the less expensive Royal Deluxe, which is $40 cheaper, if you’re just going to wear it occasionally in casual settings.
Boots for Millennials IMO. I am going to stick to classic boots.
Hey Cowboy, how did they look after 2 weeks wear?
There’s already a video on my channel that shows them after two weeks and another that shows them after a year, so just search for it. Thanks for watching.
How can I purchase 1
Great looking hat! Thanks for sharing the backstory. 👍
This hat looks great on you. It suits you well Sir. Thank you for sharing! Liked and subscribed. 👍
I’m a fan of John Wayne’s movies not necessarily his politics but that’s neither here or there. Great hat and great review. Might need to add this hat to my collection. Thanks for sharing 👍
Reagan's hat in the Gorbachev pic looks like a cattleman crease
Great video. Thanks for saying it’s good to get wet. Wearing in the rain is a need for any hat.
I retired from a Battalion who's linage was Cavalry. My Unit of course didn't wear a Stetson Cavalry hat but I have often seen Soldiers who did and wanted so much to wear one. I'm retired now I don't want to wear the Cavalry Stetson, I'm wondering what hat would look nice on a woman. I don't own horses anymore I'm not a farmer, but I would like a nice cowgirl hat with no more than a 4 in crown and no more than 4 inch brim. I'd like one with a neck tie strap to keep my hat on in the windy weather.
First of all, many thanks for your service. The nicer Stetson cowboy…er, cowgirl, hats are not going to have the chin cord. I made a video about the Stetson Seneca, which an affordable but high quality hat with roughly the same dimensions you mentioned. Take a look at that video, and see if it’s what you had in mind.
Great videos, I've watched many, your delivery guys like to throw your stuff a lot. My question is what was the stratoliner named before they rebranded it as the stratoliner?
Nice hat. I don't mind a 3 1/2" brim. Thats what i wear when im shooting my compound bow. Cheers!
I like the crushable hats but I would like a little shape to the sides...is the brim flat all around or is there a way to shape the sides up a smidge?
Floppy brim so you can crush it. No way at all to hold a shape, Bubba.
Can you give me some advice? I want to buy my first hat. I’m looking for something classic and not too expensive. Can you recommend something? Thank you.
Can’t go wrong with the standard 6X Open Road silverbelly. It may, in fact, be the only hat you’ll ever need, Bubba. I’ve reviewed lots of hats though, so look around the channel and see what you like.
@ Thanks 👍
Eddy Bros no longer makes their hats here in the USA, but I really like their cougar model of outback hat. 100% wool lite felt, packable snd crushable...etc. I wouldn't buy one today since they're imported now ,but they were a steal at $50 when they were still made here.
History Nerd, I've missed your videos. Glad to see you're back.
Hey Stetson, unless you give History Nerd some review samples, I'm just gonna buy from American Hat Company instead.
I ‘d love to hear about what type of cowboy hats they used in westerns in the 50’s & 60’s. The material, etc. they seem to be real floppy compared to today.
We need a review for the Stetson Dune Gun Club hat.
I’ve always thought about getting that hat, but it’s 300 cottonpickin’ dollars. The ol’ History Nerd ain’t made out of money, Bubba.
I’ve had an open road for about ten years, it’s my favorite hat, I wear all the time. I’d like to purchase a newer one in a different color but the prices have gone sky high and I just can’t bring my self to get it. I think the retail for thé 6 X is $360, basically double what I paid in 2015. I just can’t.
Inflation has certainly not been kind to the hat market, so I agree with you 100%, Bubba. Prices of many hats are getting a bit crazy. Thanks for watching.
