I appreciate your essay on the Open Road. I'm 75 and retired from a career as a university library administrator. I got bit by the OR when I lived in San Antonio and fantasized about walking down Commerce St. in a crisp suit and an Open Road hat. I did that actually about 30 years later. I own about 20 Open Roads or close copies such as by Resistol. My best is a Stetson Sovereign 100 (or something-- it's downstairs) which is as soft as a flannel shirt. Mostly I wear several 2x or 3x. One detail I learned along the way is that hat shapes have, or had designations such as oval, 2x oval and long oval which happens to fit me best. I estimate the hats in my Open Road collection, acquired entirely via eBay ten to 20 years ago, are between 70 and 30 years old. There is a saying: the cowboy hat is worn by a man who works on a ranch. The Open Road is worn by the man who owns the ranch. And yes-- the hat does confer mysterious authority, as when dealing with tradespeople, garage mechanics, etc.

I dont like the square hats all that much. Its the mark of a cheaper hat unless its custome done. I just reshaped my classic straw stallion stetson and its got a great curve to it. But my mad hatters of texas, is my friday night special, a new clean dress type. But its git the standard square shape that justins and ariat also have. Its cookie cutter stuff.

I watched this video and your post-year review of these boots. I’ve decided to buy them. The only concern I have is my feet are a bit messed up from the Army and I wasn’t sure-due to the round toe vs square toe-if I should go to EE. 🤔 I suppose I’ll order the standard D and if they are too tight I can exchange them.

The silver mine is a great gus as well. Buffalo collection. Brim a 1/4 smaller. 3 3/4 . Looking good with a suit. The hat band needs to be replaced. Diamond silver concho jump out too much. A nice thin horsehair hatband make it very nice.

I have the Jason Aldean Georgia boy resistol hat. Actually have 2. Because they don’t come shaped like his. I taught myself how to shape them. So in case I jacked it up I have another one lol. They are sturdy hats. Heavier than some other palm leafs for sure. And are comfortable!!

I wear my Resistol straw cattleman crown from Easter to October. Looks like a Texas Ranger hat like Jeff Bridges in Hell or High Water. But come fall I wear John Wayne’s Stetson Peace Maker (thanks to you) and I love it!!!😊

About time to switch from my Open Road hemp to Silverbelly at Labor Day...quick question ... I have seen posts that say Silverbelly is weather resistant and can wear in rain...just looking for confirmation before I expose mine to Louisiana rains this fall..

And one more hat from one of his movies that reminds me of this peacemaker. My favorite Christmas movie The Three Godfathers. Again the creased on the crown is more of a fedora pinch front, but it looks a lot like the peacemaker color and shape.

As for which hat it most resembles from his movies, I’m leaning towards The Commancheros and The Shootist hat.. Now I know that a lot of his hats had more about fedora front pinch crease in the crown. But these two movies really have the shape of the brim and the color, dead on I think. But for me the fact that it’s a John Wayne hat from the collection celebrating his bigger than life movie characters plus has a Gus crease, which so many of us have come to love from watching Lonesome Dove, makes this hat, just a culminationof iconic John Wayne collectors items with a nod to Gus. It’s also kind of nice that the initials on the inside match my own.

Wish I could stop by your place for a bourbon and sharing stories of John Wayne who also was loved by John Wayne! Here’s my bit of fandom. Back in ‘68 when I was 8 years old, my grandmother in LA was still working as a script supervisor on set for a lot of movies. She was particularly close friends with Howard Hawkes. Thanks to that friendship she was able to visit with John Wayne on the studio lot and he signed a postcard picture of him to me. That’s as close as I got to my western movie hero. Thanks again for your great videos, and sharing so much great trivia on all things so many of us western movie fans love.
