Hi History Nerd, I waited a couple of months before the "Boss of the Plains" hat was in my side. Jumped on it right away. Mine came in a beautiful brown with a tooled leather band. Not too much dusting or fake aging. Like you said it is a crap shoot on these, i got lucky. Felt is stiff and super soft, band is a nice leather with some cool brass accents. Love your channel.
Good to see another video!! I’m 21 getting into wearing cowboy hats. I think the hardest part is starting, everyone has something to say. After that, it feels good. It’s a little too cold for me to wear mine in Chicago this time of year. My ears turn red haha
Just remember that if you like a hat and feel good wearing it, tell anyone who says otherwise that their opinion is about as welcome as an outhouse breeze. Thanks for watching.
I wish I'd started wearing full brim hats at 21, the quicker you start the quicker you can get used to the fact that you have a more awesome style than the haters.
I agree with you. That hat is ridiculous. From the lousy excuse of a box, to the ugly "antiqued" finish. Being a 73 year old Texan, I wouldn't be caught dead in that hat!🤮
Sorry yours was so "off." I got one week before last, had been on email wait list for a few weeks, size 7 3/8. Mine came and its a really nice light brown/almost tan, fits perfectly, no vacuum cleaner dust, and I LOVE it! Brim was a little uneven in front at first, but it seemed like it was still damp from the factory, and since I live in a dry climate it was fixed within a day and set up nicely. The leather hat band is nothing special and I may yet change it out, but I'm super happy with my 180 dollar purchase, 200 all in with tax. Love your channel, best wishes!
I got one last year and really like it. I didn't care for the chance drawing of color choices but got lucky with one that came in a chocolate brown. After breaking it in a little and making it more my own, it looks pretty freaking good and I often get compliments on it. I agree the name is misleading if you know your hat history but it is what it is. A name to sell a hat.

I have one boss of the plains, I ordered in 2023 from Mexican dealer, I'm in México I decided for the same reason of the history of the so called Texanas down here in Mexico I was disappointed because I didnt received the stetson box but the hat is beautiful mine is light brown and with the green satin inside and does not hace the taco form, I think is a good hat Im not an expert but I loved it I know you didnt like the blue you just received but let me tell you it look good on you, also think stetson quality has dropped cause last christmas I received my 6x skiline with poor quality on the stitched band this time directly from stetson web page but well this time they sent the stetson box, I hope they offer a good deal for you in your next order, congratulations you have a great chanel and videos !
History clarification: the John B. Stetson Company closed the main Philadelphia factory in 1970 and struggled until going bankrupt in the mid-80's. There hasn't been a true Stetson hat manufactured since then. The brand name was sold and the owner is little more than a collective brand name licensor at this point. Every Stetson hat sold over the last 3 to 4 decades is a Hatco, Inc. hat that has been licensed the brand name. Regarding the hat featured in this video: it is a travesty. A BotP is flat-brimmed as you stated, and yours has about the goofiest-looking rodeo bend that could be applied to a hat which belittles the BotP legacy with its hipster-cowboy "fashion". Furthermore the artificial distressing appears unnatural, as all artificial distressing tends to look, and it is the distressing's brown color that probably lumped it into the "Assorted Browns" group for labeling. I'm sorry you received such a lousy-looking, legacy-bashing hat. I would ask that you exchange it for another model entirely but if you end up getting another "BotP" that's brown, gray or silverbelly in exchange then please please please steam that brim down to flat or down-turned cavalry-style. Thanks for the entertaining video, where the featured hat ensures that the next one can only be better!
I could not agree more on your opinion of that hat. I went through Stetson's online site. I think that the one you are looking for would be the Amish 4x wool felt hat, which I like.
Not too difficult: go to a hat store with these in stock (a mom & pop near me has hundreds), try some on, find one that works (shape, color, fit), buy it. A very similar (black) BotP is my favorite hat out of many western hats (and others) in my collection.
It ain’t that easy when you wear a size 7-3/4, which few stores even carry, Chief. Because so few of us wear a hat that big, stores don’t stock them because they don’t sell.
It's a long way from 1870. HN needs to wake up to "woke." At least he didn't get the puce Broke-Back model. Now that would really have been distressing. - -
I purchased the silverbelly Boss of the Plains. I Reshaped my brim and I must say it fits well. Mine is a bit different from yours with the distressed look. You may have gotten the first one made on a Monday morning or the last one made on a Friday afternoon. My guess is that any off quality hat coming off the line might be a way for Stetson to sell the hats. As always great video.
Sorry about your hat. I ordered a Boss of the Plains about four months ago and it did indeed come in a tan color and it is marked assorted brown. I hope Stetson makes it right for you.
Many thanks for watching the channel. I posted an unboxing video of the John Wayne Stetson Stageline hat just two weeks ago, so go check it out if you've not seen it yet.
I think the History nerd needs to expand his horizons. A nice aqua-marine fringed bib front western shirt, some white skin tight jeans, and that navy blue hat, he'd be styling.
I think the History Nerd can totally pull off wearing the blue color, but if he doesn't feel it, I can understand, that he sends the hat back (I like how you referred to yourself in the third person, so I will join in). I also do not care for the artificial ageing/distressing, I think that's for Hipster Doofuses. I enjoyed your video very much, Kind Regards from Germany Oliver
Danke schön for the kind words from Germany. The History Nerd disagrees that he can pull off wearing a blue hat as he would feel like Violet Beauregarde after she swells into a blueberry at Wonka's factory. I picked up referring to myself in the third person from The Rock in WWE because he and I share the same physique and workout regimen.
I have ordered probably 15 or so hats directly from Stetson and I can tell you that it hasn’t been flawless. I ordered a Skyline model once and received the Powder River which worked out ok because I ended up liking it and after a call to Stetson I got a deal on another hat. I also had a problem with an Open Road that had very faint light blue stains on the Brim and crown. The hat band was also stitched poorly. Made me wonder if someone there was hitting the Bourbon on their lunch break. How they sent you a Blue hat when you ordered Brown is a head scratcher. That distressed model looks like someone rubbed it in dirt and sprayed something on it to keep it from rubbing off. Not a good look. I called Stetson about the Open Road I had delivered in poor condition. We worked something out but that should not happen on any order let alone a $260+ hat. Having to ship it back is not fun. I have been lucky though. I have a Boot Barn close by and bought some Stetsons there after trying them on and getting a good look at the workmanship. I hope you get that situation resolved to your satisfaction. I have been there and I know what you are going through. They are pretty good about either giving you a discount on the hat or another model. Good luck!
I've generally had good experience with Stetson. . .until now. They are charging me a $10.00 fee to return this hat, but I'm willing to pay it just to get the blue bastard out of my house.
@@historynerdsmancave7567 yeah, I would have returned it as well. Im into traditional colors . Mostly different shades of brown, Silver belly . Why they make a blue hat is beyond me. The taco shape is also not something I would get either. They messed up and you have to pay the shipping fee? Not good.
@@historynerdsmancave7567 I hear ya,if I knew I’d get a silver belly I’d order me one, but my luck it would be dark brown or black , and I don’t wear dark hats to HOT in south Florida for dark hats 👍
Very informative thanks ! The original BOP didn't have a very high crown, only 4", and with a fairly flat shape, as you can see in the picture of the Apache. The version in Tombstone had a much higher crown, very evident in the promotional picture you showed. The hats worn by the Amish these days most resembles the original, unshaped version. This hat is an abomination, even more so wearing that name, pity they sullied the name and ignored the actual historical style when conceiving this.
This was one of the main reasons why I contacted the customer support of a store in Australia before I ordered the Boss of the Plains 6x...I was afraid that I was not going to get the color that I wanted. I asked customer support as soon as I ordered the dark brown of this model, if they can ship me one - they did. They said that a size of 58 with dark brown color was just sitting next to them...I am not a fan of blue hats either. But thanks for posting this video. Tried to find some videos here on TH-cam with this specific model, but could not find so many.
Hey History Nerd.... I thought the moment you displayed that hat..it looked just like Rip's hat...in Yellowstone. SURELY somebody(s) has/have already contacted Stetson about getting that EXACT hat! HistoryNerd should have just said..."What will any of you out there give me for this hat? Don't it look like Rip's hat!?!" Bound to be some larged sized Yellowstone followers who are very interested. Probably get them to pay much more...and the shipping!
I’ve seen Yellowstone, and Rip’s hat ain’t blue. Perhaps the color didn’t translate on camera, but this BOTP was a cottonpickin’ blue hat. It’s now well on the way to the return center via UPS, and I’ve learned my lesson about shooting dice when ordering hats sight unseen.
I’m loyal to Stetson, but thanks for the suggestion. My father was born in the dust bowl of Texas three years before the Great Depression and told me he knew he’d made it in life when he could afford to buy his first Stetson. It’s the only brand my father ever wore, so it’s the one I wear.
They really missed the mark on this one… Lots of companies nowadays sit on their reputation and give you a lesser and more expensive product than before. The worst thing about this hat in my opinion is the forced and fake weathered look.
