For the first time, I beat you to a hat. I purchased the exact same Hemp Open Road about a couple of months ago in the same size and it fits me perfectas well! I’m not a cowboy but now I occasionally play one on the weekends. In fact one day a few weeks ago while wearing this hat at my local hardware store, a complete stranger, who eyeballed me across the store the moment I walked in and then made a beeline straight for me, which kinda unnerved me, walked up to me and asked if I had heard that Toby Keith had died. Being that I’m a Boston, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon kinda guy, I sad, “ Who?” and the jig was up. Love the hat though! And it totally suits you and your suit!
Whenever I wear an Open Road - whether it's felt, straw, or hemp - I always get a compliment or an inquiry of what kind it is. Van Halen is my favorite band, brother, and I caught them in concert in Atlanta in 2012 - though Dave's voice was pretty shot by then. My 11-year-old daughter is into Taylor Swift, so our deal is that if she plays a Taylor Swift song in my car, I get to play a Van Halen song immediately after in order to wash the poison out of my ears.

History Nerd, what is your take on vintage felt open roads? recently I brought a vintage 3x Beaver Open road and it looks pretty good felt, it looks like it is from the 1980s.
At some point, Stetson changed its X scale so that anything 4X or below today is wool, not fur felt, but during the 80s, 3X and 4X were still fur felt hats. As I’ve said before, there is no federal regulatory agency governing the X scale for cowboy hats, so each company has its own scale. Thanks for watching, Bubba.
I was invited to speak at a graveside memorial service for singer Hank Williams on his 100th birthday in mid-September last year and wore a fur felt hat.
