Great history lesson. My Dad wore Resistol most of the time. He was a real cowboy in my eyes. Watched him get up early and saddle old Buttermilk, reach and get his Winchester from the pickup and slide it in the scabbard and ride out the gate into the pasture. That would be his routine a few times every week. He always had a Resistol on. Swore by them, didn't like the Stetson. I miss those days, 60 years past. I'm going to look for a Resistol now, but I'll keep wearing my Stetson also. God bless and keep them coming.
Enjoyed reading your comment. Kinda like reading an old Louis L'Lamour paperback. I dipped my toe in the Resistol water with the Amarillo Sky, and I have another Resistol that I'll also unbox on the way. I'm quite partial to Stetsons, but it's nice to branch out every once in a while. Thanks for watching..
For the past 30 plus years, I've worn the same Resistol George Straight summer straw throughout every summer. Blistering Texas heat, torrential thunderstorms, and even the occasional hail storms. And I nicknamed it my "Redneck Hardhat". Wore it in the summer as mounted officer in the P.D.. Working on a ranch, around the house & yard, and moving fields. Though much darker from dirt, it has never lost it's shape, nor suffered a single fray or cut anywhere. Sweat staind and yellowed, it looks it's age, but I see no need to buy another. I can personally say that this Resistol is one hell-of-a hat! And yes, it's a palm straw.🤠
I love that you showed the pic of you and Jamey Johnson! In a day where the term “country” is used quite loosely in my opinion, He is indeed a REAL country music artist. I think you aired closer to the BA outlaw country artist rather than the 1950’s kid 😁Great video as always sir!
Johnson was a cool guy. We're both from the same hometown and born only about five years apart, so we talked a bit about our high schools and hangouts we had in common. Appreciate the kind words about the video. Thanks for watching.
Mr. Nerd, at about the 14 minute mark when you mentioned you'd never heard the song Amarillo Sky, I realized it was not familiar to me either. I paused the video and swapped over to Apple Music and took a listen to it. I found it to be a moving tribute to a farmer's life and trials. I even saw that it was written by Keneth Alphin, also known as Big Kenny - who is from my hometown of Culpeper, Virginia. Bonus. Also, you can take solace in the fact that there's a fine steel guitar in the mix. Now, back to the review.
I too have a very large noggin, and tried on the “Amarillo Sky”. It too was too small. Just an FYI, the “Georgia Boy” (yes, not a name I would have picked) from the Jason Aldean Collection fit significantly better. You might want to give that one a go. It’s palm straw but about $10 more. Was worth it for me. Good luck and thanks for the video!
I own both. Both are really great hats, but the Resistol is a nicer hat. And you're right History Nerd, the Stetson is a better fit. Always love your videos. Thank you for making them.
I have the Jason Aldean Georgia boy resistol hat. Actually have 2. Because they don’t come shaped like his. I taught myself how to shape them. So in case I jacked it up I have another one lol. They are sturdy hats. Heavier than some other palm leafs for sure. And are comfortable!!
I just got my 8th and 9th hat / cap over Memorial Day weekend. An Akubra fur felt in light sand via UPS and a Stetson Buffalo collection western hat at Boot Barn.
Love cowboy hats and have about 20 (the number my wife knows) Have both Stetson and Resistol, seem to gravitate to Resistol for some reason. Why watching this ordered the Georgia Boy. THX
Great video as always I always learn something new. One thing to not as far as sizing is Stetson usually has their sizing in a R or regular/round oval and resistol typically does their sizing in L or long oval. The shape of the opening where your head sits is different and it could mess with fit. Depending on the model I have to switch up a size the brands.
The insight is appreciated as I am new to Resistol. I'll likely stick with Stetsons going forward but will file away this useful tip. Many thanks for watching the channel and for reaching out, Bubba.
Ive had a Brush Hog by Resistol for 19 years. The Jason Aldean collection is basically variants of that particular model. I like the one that has a slight Gus crown. Speaking of celebrity endorsed hats, Back in the 90s i paid 100 for a George Strait Resistol, at our local Cavenders, and my grandpa told me I paid 90 for the nane and 10 for bucks for the hat. 😂 In retrospect, he was right. Anyway, another top-notch video Sir!!
Sounds like your grandpa was a wise man. As a bourbon collector, I know his low opinion of celebrity-endorsed products is true about whiskey, too. I've been eyeing a hat from the Strait collection but haven't pulled the trigger...and your comment might just dissuade me altogether. Many thanks for supporting the channel.
One of my friends told me to try that brand. I've only been buying Stetson hats but might have to try Resistol. My friend swears by it being as good as Stetson. Anyways enjoying the video!
I branched out to Resistol because I've bought just about every Stetson I can find in my size. Since I just unboxed the Resistol last night, the jury is still out on my opinion of the brand.
@@historynerdsmancave7567 I wish around here tho up here in northwestern Alabama that the 2 local western stores carried Resistol hats. I am afraid that my size will be off. I also wear a gigantic size 7.5. I like to try my hats on and make sure they fit properly. The 2 stores here are fantastic but they carry mainly the cheaper twister brand hats and justin hats.
Ive had that same model hat for the past 2 summers. Bought it in Nashville at the Oprymills mall and I have to admit they do run small. I normally get 7 1/4th size hats but I had to get this one in 7 1/2. Anyways its a great hat for the price and weathers fine over time. Its right up there with my Stetson, Bailey and my rodeo king straw hats.
I pulled out the reed - the wire that runs around the circumference of the hat under the sweatband - placed a hat stretcher inside and cranked it up. We’ll see if it works. The hat was inexpensive, and they don’t make a bigger size, so returning it seemed inconvenient.
Thank you for the insight! So, from a historical practical standpoint, should I purchase a Stetson or Resistol Open Road? This is coming from a guy who covers Jimmie Rodgers Blue Yodel number 8.
One of my other videos gives the full history of the Stetson Open Road. It was originally created by Stetson, so I recommend going with the original. I've always meant to visit the Jimmie Rodgers Museum in Meridian, MIssissippi but have made it over there yet.
Another great and humorous video,I purchased an old Risistol that looks like the open road, looks great, listen that hat doesn’t look small on your melon sized head,so just go aheayand stretch it out,it’ll look fine, wear it and get your money’s worth out of it,looking forward to your next video.
I understand that you are a HatCo guy, primarily Stetson. You should try out an American Hat Company hat. I have both Resistol, and American. As far as rain, HatCo hats use a water based lacquer and are not very durable in the rain. When I know it’ll be a wet day, I wear the American. They use a petrol based lacquer and they do not turn to mush in the rain. This is even more so if you buy a pre-blocked hat. The pre-blocked hats seem to have much more lacquer on them, which makes sense. Open crown hats have to be shaped and it would be much more difficult to do that with a heavy triple dip of lacquer. Sir, I highly recommend that you try out an American Hat Company hat. They do carry 7 3/4 and they make one heck of a good hat!
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve always been loyal to Stetson in tribute to my late father because that’s what he wore. I’ve only recently tried Resistol, though I’ve not been very impressed. I’ll take a look at the American hats. Baby steps, Bubba, baby steps…
I completely understand. I was a die hard Resistol wearer. Then I found American Hat. Changed everything for me. Their hats are top quality and they have a really good fit. I also really like their +x (positive times) mantra. “Keith Maddox redefined American Hat Company as it is today lived his life and affected everyone he touches with his “Positive Times” ➕✖️ mantra. What began as a cattle brand was a unique symbol reflective of Keith Maddox, how he lived his life, and how he always saw positivity in every situation and everyone. ➕✖️ is both a gift and a lasting legacy of Keith and Susan Maddox as a guiding principle for the business and a way of life. ➕✖️ is a daily choice and reminder to renew yourself to begin again and put positive energy into the world you touch.”
Thank you for the video!! I agree im not a fan of the pre-wore look. Im buying new i want new and im a little disappointed with the sizing issue. Since i too have similar enlarged brain case 😉 I will be looking at the Stetson Square though. First of course ill watch your video on it.
Nothing wrong with Resistol, but this model of hat has a terribly goofy-looking rodeo bend in the brim. So does that Stetson you you wore to the June Jam. I recommend you reshape them both to look like the hat brim in that picture of David Allan Coe that you posted. That was a proper brim.
In my unboxing video of the Stetson Square, I discuss the “bull rider” brim shape and the rodeo riders who wore it. Seems to be the style these days. I don’t particularly care for it…but don’t hate it enough to reshape the brims. Thanks for watching.
speaking as one of those rotund older men, there are a lot more chubby chasing floozies now than there ever were before in my life. either i somehow got better looking in my advancing years (err no) or women like a mature older man over a young guy these days. take from that what you will. dont cheat though. just enjoy the flirting. BTW great review, the hat does look small on you. maybe the stetson square widened a bit from wear and the elements.
Thanks for the advice. It's just a $60 hat and not worth the hassle of returning. Palm straw is a pretty hearty material, so I'll give stretching a shot, and if it doesn't work out, it ain't a big deal. Thanks for watching!
I wear a 7-3/4, Chief, so there ain’t a size bigger for me to get. Why can’t they just make the hats in the right size like Stetson does? Thanks for watching!
@@historynerdsmancave7567no idea chief, I just know I wear 7 3/8 in Resistol and 7 1/4 in everything else. But I can say the same about boot companies, clothing companies, etc. nothing is consistent.
I have had 3 Resisistol hats. All failed. The bands always start to flake. Good looking hats, but the last one I only wore 7 days before failing. Never again.
Stetson used to offer factory tours, but I have heard the have recently stopped. I'd planned to visit the Dallas/Fort Worth area in order to take the our, but I may still go just to visit the outlet store...although I'm not sure how I'd get my purchases home on an airplane.

I wished this Resistol fit my big ol' head better, but I have become a big fan of palm straw hats - they're quite versatile.

Tried those hats but couldn't find a great fit. Went with a CODY JAMES 15X STRAW COWBOY HAT for 45.00! It is also Palm!
The Cattleman crown is my fav tho!

Tried on a resistol 30x hat the other day. It was amazing. Too bad it didn’t fit right.
That’s my issue never felt like it actually fitted
Looks good, you should give the Stetson Broken Bow straw hat, I’m thinking about picking it up, I’ve already got it in buffalo felt
I've looked at the Broken Bow...but I'm not sure I can pull off that hat band, and the feather is a bit over the top for my conservative taste.
