    the attraction of Puffing Billy is that it runs in the outer suburbs and is easily accessibly by electric train. A Colac to Beechy would not attract the same patronage. Many people see Puffing Billy as an outing with the kids for which Colac to Beechy would be unsuitable. Indeed some people actually opposed the extension of Puffing Billy to Gembrook as they thought it would take too long and not many people will use it. Many crowded trains ran to Lakeside and was seen to be the right travel time. I’m glad the extension to Gembrook happened.

    Distance infact protect all home signals under the control of the signaller in the signal box rather than just one home signal, when the distance signal is clear it means all home signals are clear, when distance signal is on it means that one or more home signals are at danger. Home signals are also called section and starter signals. The only expection to the rule is with intermediate home signals when there is only one of them and a distance signal behind it however you still have the distance, home and starter layout also controlled from the signal box. It is a common misconception that a distance signal only protects one home signals, this stems from the colour light signals where it is true, but with semaphore signals, this is false.

  • @PolarBear71169
    @PolarBear71169 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

    unfortunately the semaphore signals were taken out at barens in 2018 I believe as the line was converted into a single line to Deniliquin, however they have resleepered a small section of the Moulmein line to the UCM Grain facility to allow trains to run on that section once more, however it will probably be a point operated by a master key, if your wondering if trains can go further they unfortunately cannot as the Line Across Thrya Road has been cut thus preventing trains from going further. will try to get some footage tomorrow :)

    When a stick is at "Stop", it's usually referred to as "On". When at "Proceed" it's referred to as "Off"... Which can sometimes lead to the following statement: “Safeworking is complete, You’re ok to pull number 5 Off”… So, if said too loudly, can get some weird looks from the Passengers…..

    Note that the signal blade, is always bolted/hinged near the top edge of the blade. This is so the blade will naturally fall to the Danger position, should the mechanism fail.

    • @kent380
      @kent380 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Except that Victorian Railways used “somersault” type centrally pivoted blades, as seen on the former GNR lines in England, so they had to be counterweighted to fail in the safe position.

  • @Comeng17
    @Comeng17 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Just want to say, great video, but I do have some corrections: Firstly, 2 position signals are not "widely used", almost everything is 3 position coloured light. Also, the presence of a blade is not what causes the individual signaller thingy, those were just operational practises that were phased out at the same time. Mechanical signals can be automated. But it's still a great video, nicely done.

    Too good. I grew up in Benalla, on the Melbourne - Sydney line. Steam was common, but Diesel's were beginning to take over. We moved to Tatong, 30km SE of Benalla. There was a Benalla - Tatong line, of which there is still plenty of evidence, ie, bridge pylons, roadbed, and culverts. I find disused railway lines thoroughly interesting. Thanks. 👍👍👍

    They should reopen the line to at least Clyde as a double track extension similar to East Packenham. The amount of new houses being built at Clyde would be the main reason for this extension. The line should be built as skyrail or in a trench from Cranbourne to avoid creating new level crossings.

    The line was never commonly referred to as the "Crowes" line, it was always the Beech Forest or "Beechy" line. _"Otaways"_ ???? It's *Otways.* Pronunciation and historical accuracy are important if you want to do videos, especially documentaries (Which I won't do). Crowes is not how you say it, it's "Crows" as in the bird. If the line was only closed around 50 years ago, that would make it 1973/74, as opposed to its actual closure date of 1962. Considering too the efforts of the existing two narrow gauge preservation societies here in Victoria, and the efforts needed to set up a base in Colac, I cannot see any works being done towards running the Beechy as a railway, any time soon.
