DIY Off-Grid Power Setup: Anyone Can Do This!
Happy Sunday! It has been a week of RAIN here. We have an afternoon respite right now, but it's due to start again in a few hours. This week, despite the rain, I finish up the box I started last week and get my battery bank and inverter ready to go for winter.
Thanks so much for watching!!

    I foster-failed and then fostered what were called Shy/Fearful dogs for several years. Very extreme cases. It was a journey, for sure. I have seen miracles. How is the treat weaning going? I even had the neighbor's dog trained to come for "Cookie Time!" on voice command alone.

I'm writing this in mid October 2024, did you get to do more sailing as you hoped to? We also had a rescued dog, Siberian Husky, her name was Emi. Pets do make life a lot more fulfilling. Hi 👋 Amanda, q. How does wildlife like deer and wolf get to your island? Do they swim from the mainland, 😊 trails 👣 🐕 🐾

    • @AmandaOffGrid
      @AmandaOffGrid 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      hi! the wolves, bear and deer most likely originate from the mainland, but most have been in the Broughtons for years and years! They travel between the islands by swimming across the ocean channels using the strong currents. Animals are always establishing new territories out here - they go where the food is! If that's on another island that's where they go :).

    When I am at a cabin on the west coast of Van Island I put my husky on a 30 foot tie out and let her out for a pee on that. She goes pee on command (had to teach that) and comes right back in for a treat. That way if she has a pee need at 4 am, I simply attach the 30 foot cord and give her the pee command. She does NOT want to stay out there. A pee is done and she rushes back in to sleep. No treat needed she is just happy to be inside. I really don’t think a wild animal would dare at this point while I stand guard.

    • @AmandaOffGrid
      @AmandaOffGrid 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      i think that's what i'll end up trying to do. i've taught Peach to pee on command as well, but she definitely has her preferred peeing spots. the challenge is going to get her to do her biz 30ft in front of the cabin. that girl has to be as far as possible from the cabin before she'll go. when Peach first got here i used to let her out at around 5/6 a.m. in the dark and she would be gone for 30 minutes. she LOVED it. she'd return, eyes bright, looking like she had just had the time of her life - haha! no more of that for her! with the wolves establishing this island as their territory part of me wishes Peach loved being inside more :).

    Your rueful "the lid matches the box" made me laugh - I think back on things I made /skills I tried for the first time, a particularly squat pottery bowl comes to mind, that I felt like that about. The battery set up is interesting. I have not lived w/o power intentionally, except for some time spent on the off-grid hippie farm of my parents friends when I was little, so it's intriguing to see the requirements and limitations of getting the power you want there at your cabin.

    What about fire danger? I’m curious 😊. Best to you🟢

    • @AmandaOffGrid
      @AmandaOffGrid 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      the chances of these batteries causing a fire or catching fire are almost 0 as long they're not physcially damaged (thus the reason for the box). they are super stable and will be ventilated properly while inside - the box will not be insulated and the batteries will have a minimum of a foot of space around them. the batteries come with a reliable BMS (battery monitoring system so they cannot be overcharged). but most importantly the load on them will be minimal. it will really only be my laptop and perhaps on some occasions my projector for projecting movies :). nothing that will overheat them. i have also purchased a battery monitor that will monitor both the v and the temperature at all times :)

    this may be too late, but ..take your tomato plant, roots and all, turn it upside down and gently slide it into a feed bag (chicken pellets, sheep kibble, etc). fold the top over and close it--i used staples. now hang the bag in a cool, dry place. my tomatoes were good until late march--in fact, they were better! enjoy your show.
