Years ago I had a dog that would take off. When she did that I ran in the opposite direction. I made it her job to follow me rather than her making it my job to chase her. Eating grass settles their stomach. You have an amazing life.
haha!! that works :)! if i did that to Peach and she could see me, she'd definitely do that. it's the times where i am working and i look up and she's gone. she slips away so fast. i mean, i always have eagle eyes on her!! if i get distracted for more than 20 to 30 seconds she bolts. a month or so ago she disappeared up into the forest and was gone for 20 minutes... no matter how much i called she didn't come. finally she came out of the forest after a bit. her eyes were bright and you could tell she had the time of her life - haha. i just don't think she's 'wild' savvy enough to be doing that with the wolves and bears around. she'll attack without even thinking twice. she'd lose.
Hi Ma'am Amanda I admired you for being brave being alone in that island is not easy ...your work place is so amazing, beautiful and peaceful,,take care always..God bless❤️
All my dogs are like cows, love grass. Only trouble eating to much grass is it can ball in stomache and get stuck. -not happened to mine. Does she like treats, can you put some in your pocket and reward her when you recall her? I think she is in the terrible twos like a child, pushing the boundaries. She looks a lovely dog. Love your videos and talks. Have a great week. ❤
Felt the same when my long time neighbors retired to a warmer location. Like you said, even though you might not have seen them everyday it was comforting to know they were there, and I'm sure they felt the same way. Peachy feeling a little rebellious. Darn kids!
Glad to hear the bears have moved on for now. Having the same weird windy, cold rain on south island as well. Fingers crossed your new neighbours will be as friendly. I'm sure knowing there is a friendly face close by is comforting especially thru the dark winter months. Have a wonderful week, hope Peach behaves :)
My sweet pooch would take off into the woods and chase deer, bunnies, etc. on our daily walks. It was super dangerous as trappers had foot-hold traps everywhere. So when she took off, I turned and took off in the opposite direction, then I would hide until she either found me or she was nearby and showing panic. She was super smart and figured out to keep tabs on me after only doing this a couple of times. Grass-eating...totally normal, most do it and barf happily away. Gives you a chance to see what they have been eating that they maybe shouldn't have, like scat or frogs. Keep living the life! So enjoy your channel.❤️
Hi Amanda, I'm fairly new here, have watched 5-6 of your videos and enjoy them, and you, Sooo much. What a wonderful way of life you have! You're so sweet with a mild temperament, makes it enjoyable to listen to you. Peaches is a beautiful companion for you. I hope her eating and throwing up the grass won't be anything serious and that she learns how to "stay" sooner than later. Glad to be here.
Hello Amanda, If Peach is food motivated… Ever try a loud coach’s whistle? Whistle training with a maximum treat reward has always been my go to with Mr Finley. He’s a Karelian Bear Dog, so always on the hunt for something, very stubborn, and independent. We also do search and recovery. So the off leash recall is very important, like it is for you. I get very nervous too, when he wanders away too far.
I got a dog from the SPCA a few years back. He had been returned twice, so I was told this might be his last chance. He's one of the smartest dogs I've ever known. He's part lab, part Australian Shepard, a gorgeous dog. He also runs away in the same manner. If I go look for him and find him, when I call him, he looks at me and then runs off in the opposite direction. He typically won't come back until the next day when he is good and hungry. In all other respects, he is well trained and well behaved. When I got him he was just two. Like you, I thought he would outgrow this behavior, and I just needed to be patient. I was wrong. Three years later, and he is worse, running away farther and staying out longer. The big problem is that I live right on the US/CA border. From my property the border is a 5-10 minute walk up the dirt road. I have friends who are border patrol agents and Customs and Immigration officers. They have warned me that if he runs across the border and is picked up in Canada, it could be quite challenging and costly to get him back, as he will have entered Canada illegally. I've never had a dog with this challenge, and it is quite a challenge, as I cannot take him on road trips or camping, as just stopping to let him go to the bathroom, could result in him disappearing and bringing my trip to a halt.
@@jeffreykretsch2380 That is my only option. He lives on a rope tied to a tree, or he is on a leash. If I lived in a city or town, this would be expected, but living out on the edge of the wilderness, and the lifestyle that I live, this is extremely limiting. As mentioned, I've never owned a dog with this challenge. Last night I found him wandering around away from his rope. He had chewed through it. This time he didn't run, and I was able to re-tie his rope. Two other times the spring loaded latch that attaches to his collar broke, and he got off and ran away. Stuff happens, but if while on a trip, this would be very frustrating.
I think Peach is just pushing the boundaries a bit. You tend to forget she's only young. My 2, both full Labs, sometimes disappear when I'm at the beach. Not for long, but long enough to raise the anxiety levels....😅. They both also eat grass. Doesn't seem to upset tummys though. The more course beach grass is a firm fav and usually just poops out later.
Oooh, what was that at 1.53? A squirrel? You're right Amanda, Peach is so young still. I have a 14 year old labrador who sticks to me like glue but I still remember her first 3 to 4 years. She had so much energy and was always running off. In another 2 years, Peach'll calm down!
Hi Amanda. Peach is most likely runs away because she’s afraid of being put on the leash. The other thing, start doing a “call back” game with her. Call her for no reason and if she comes back, give her treats and praise her, play with her. It’s very important that she knows that not every call back ends up with either leash, restraining in the house or ending her game or such. They usually eat grass when they have belly ache and they want to throw up. It is their way of getting better, but try to investigate why she is having tummy problems. New food does it with my dog all the time. It should be a week of giving her usual food and the new one half and half before completely changing over. Take care 😊😊
Amanda, I was wondering if you ever take your sailboat out for a little trip around where you live. Nothing far, just to take it out for a bit. Love watching your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Amanda, was that a black squirrel in the beginning? As usual you are working very hard. Do you ever take a day off from working? If you do, what do you do for fun? I wouldn't worry too much about Peaches eating grass, There are five main reasons why dogs eat grass. Some dogs will eat grass just because they like how it tastes or because it is a way for dogs to entertain themselves when they are bored. Other times, dogs will eat grass because they have an upset stomach, need more fiber in their diet, or have a diet deficiency. I do appreciate you sharing your life with us.
Hi Amanda. The property is looking good. I went online about the grass eating and there are many reasons dogs eat it which lends to more confusion on just what the real reason why Peach is doing it. Just have to let it play out and see how often she does it. She looks healthy and happy though. Have a good week.
I had a "runner" too. A major runner, escape artist. A 1-1/2 yr old boxer/lab rescue. I ended up getting a lightweight 30' leash. She rarely had to feel a pull from me because she could still wander while on it. I gently reigned her in when we neared people. After a few months I could drop the leash and she didn't know it. Later I bought a 15' leash and kept it dropped. The great thing is, it's much easier grabbing a leash on the ground than grabbing a collar on a dog. My dog didn't perceive any "threat" from me trying to catch her since I would simply get the leash a fair distance from her. She went from a "runner" to a buddy, happy to remain in eye-sight and follow me. That tight bond can take time but keeping "rules" positive or in a game type fashion with rewards will get you both there. Thanks for sharing your experiences!! What a beautiful way to live and enjoy nature! Hope Peach is feeling better! btw, I had a sweet Rottweiler that I named "Peaches". Great name! :)
Love your videos Amanda and your off grid living. Maybe try and get a GPS thing for Peaches collar just in case she wanders too far?? Also try keeping small pieces of cooked liver with you when you re out together and when you call her to come occasionally, treat her up. That may encourage her to always come back when you call her. Take care❤❤❤
Maybe peach is going through her terrible twos, like kids do. Lol I have a small dog and I live in a cabin in the woods and we have alot of coyote so I totally understand u keeping a close eye on peach, my dog would go in the woods with the coyote if I let her. Enjoyed your video!
Peach is a little monkey, testing you. But I too have a forest loving dog that eats grass a few mornings a week, so I fully get it. The grass bit, I don’t’t worry any more, has been doing it for 6 years and it clearly settles her enough to eat breakfast after walk. Not sure if I mentioned before, I use a whistle, two blasts to recall my dog when I really really really need her to come back and for that she always gets a high value treat. I use it sparingly. And the sound carries way better than my voice.
I asked my vet once why dogs eat grass - she said that they've studied it but there isn't one answer; she said they do it for a variety of reasons: sometimes it's a tummy upset, sometimes it's just to eat it. When my dog ate it he never threw up - he pooped grass mats!
🤣 oh no!!!! grass mats!! poor thing. that must have been unpleasant! i worry about parasites for Peach... she eats so much deer poo. that's one of the reasons she runs away into the forest... she can eat as much deer poo as she wants and doesn't get told not to
Peach is just testing her limits, just like we did when we were her comparable age, but you already know that. You’ve got this growing pain under control. She really doesn’t know how terrific this idilic life you’ve made for her truly is. Like you I hope she never tastes what a dog’s life could have been, under different circumstances.
Sometimes dogs do this out of a nutritional deficiency or upset stomach, but it's often just out of boredom, especially in younger dogs. Your dog may need training if he wants to run away but acknowledges hearing you ... I had that issue with my dog
Peach is so cute. But she is pushing the envelope. Yes the weather is all over the map. It is ridiculous that there is a blanket fire ban, when it obviously should be way more regional. You're in an area where the hazard is pretty minimal at this time of year. Don't quote me on this, but I believe cooking fires are allowed.
yes, you're right. i can have a 'campfire' but there was so much debris it would have taken hours. also, the previous caretaker was reported by other islands that saw the smoke and he ended up getting a fine. we are in the coastal region and we've had a category 2 ban now for a couple weeks :(. i kinda get it though as BC has been struggling with wildfires!
@@AmandaOffGrid IMO, they are purposefully creating more fire hazard at least to private property, by not letting people properly burn combustibles in and around their property. Movi ng those branches etc. behind the house is putting the house at risk. This is part of the problem around managing forests that needs to be done at this time of year, to prevent what happened last year. Climate change is not the problem, it is management.
What if you just let Peach do her thing? I mean if you keep her on a tight rein she is just going to be miserable and keep trying. Everything on the planet wants what they cant have. If she runs into trouble she'll figure out what to do and what not to do. I used to hover over my fox terrier and she would run from me. But I became the fun and treat lady and now she doesn't want to leave my sight. Its scary but I think it might be worth a try. In a week or two the newness will wear off and she'll want to be around you. Especially of you have treats and toys. You disappear on her and she'll be trying to find you 😉Just a thought. I also think the grass eating is normal. Summer can break out any time, right?!
Yah, I waffle back and forth. With the grizzlies around this summer the further she goes into forest the more danger she is in. I have heard horror stories about grizzlies and dogs... things that live rent-free in my head :(. Peach isn't bear savvy at all and would rush and attempt to attack a grizzly. If she did this she wouldn't get a second chance... In my belly it just doesn't feel right.
yes, that's it. she's still very green when it comes to bears and even deer... dogs can get the wrong end of the stick when messing with both. she still has a lot to learn.
yup. sometimes we have about 3 or 4 of them go by at a time, both ways. they are timing their trips for the currents at Ripple Rock on Discovery Passage.
If you feed your dog dry kibble she could be experiencing digestive issues. I would let the vet know. If she keeps throwing up there maybe health issues occurring. See if her dog food has been recalled in the past. Good luck.
All dogs do that if they've got to upset stomach or they're feeling sick yet eat grass and puke it up and that brings up all the yellow vial every dog I've ever owned doesn't
You should take Peach to see a vet next time in town, she could have a digestive disorder according to some research, especially if she throws up right after.
Do you have any problems with mice .??? .we noticed last year our cabin had a problem with mice ..we have had issues in the past but not like last year
i did my first year here, but then i created a huge bucket trap and left it outside my cabin and then cabin 1 for a few nights. first night i caught about 25 mice. after those traps no more mice in my cabin.
Hi Amanda strange about Peach Maybe she is just trying to see what she can get away with you since she has been a good girl. But to hear you and still take off lol little shit. Very sad about your neighbours moving from where they were, Always nice when you know someone is around, But good that you'll still see them off and on. My dog eats grass as well , let me know how change of food goes. Still loving where you live
something tells me she just wants to eat as much deer poo as she can find without getting in trouble... so she goes where i can't see her! stinker! thanks for watching :)!
oh my eating deer poo isn't a good thing, you said you changed the food incase it is she is lacking something reason she seeks the deer poo. Hmm my dog eats grass like he is a cow. Hope we both can figure out what going on.
Could she have run away because she smelled a bear? Our husky cross did that, it smelled a bear and full-on bolted away in opposite direction from us…survival instinct took over. She was running so fast we had to use our truck to catch up with her and then she immediately jumped into our truck.
Peach would run toward a bear… she’s very territorial. She gets a scent up her nose (squirrel, mink etc) and she loses all common sense. If I didn’t grab her attention she’d move miles without looking up. 😆
You know you can ask your phone why Peach is eating grass u til she pukes? Use it for all that it’s worth Amanda! They tied us to them we might as well make the best out of it!📱
The weather here's been crazy too hot cold hot cold hot cold all day long drives me crazy but undressed and I got a dress and I got undressed and I dress and every time that weather changes it kills my body and living off my painkillers sometimes I got to take extra painkillers not allowed to because I will run out only allow me so many a month I have to take them every 4 hours but they don't work where's the darn and doctors don't like to prescribe you narcotics I would smoke weed but it cost too much and I choke on it now if I could make my own butter and put it in a cookie it's supposed to help for a chronic pain but life goes on gardens doing very good put up shears to shade it all and then the sun goes away we'll have to pull them down the rope so they can get sun today and I'll leave it like that until it gets warmer
Could well be a response to having being tied up more and her loss of freedom over the past few months cus of the Bears? give her more trust and confidence in you and the environment???

@@AmandaOffGrid Trust what your gut is telling you..
@@AmandaOffGrid yeah, I totally get it. I dont live near bears so it was a bit easier.
Our dogs (long time ago) used to eat grass. They were healthy but it seems it was a digestive habit.
buttercup ate a ton of grass as well... but right before her stomach would make bizarre noises. the grass would stop the rumblings.
👍😃✌️💪❤️
😂 maybe she knows her birthday is coming up 🐶 hide & seek
She’s still a baby and doesn’t understand the dangers
yes, that's it. she's still very green when it comes to bears and even deer... dogs can get the wrong end of the stick when messing with both. she still has a lot to learn.
unfortunately Peach despises other dogs. she's quite mean to them :(. she's a COVID dog. had no socialization at all. she's a bit of a case.
Happy Sunday! Do you regularly see cruise ships passing by? Are you on the main inside passage route?
yup. sometimes we have about 3 or 4 of them go by at a time, both ways. they are timing their trips for the currents at Ripple Rock on Discovery Passage.
@@AmandaOffGrid A traffic jam!! :)
I enjoyed the Video, Glad the Bears are gone ...
me too!!! haha!
If you live on the leash or behind the gate you have to run. That might be the only chance.
You should take Peach to see a vet next time in town, she could have a digestive disorder according to some research, especially if she throws up right after.
yah, i'll take her soon. the only reason why i worry about it is b/c she eats so much deer poo. i worry about parasites.
@@AmandaOffGrid Agree eating dog poo could be the issue for parasites, please let us all know how it goes.
When a dog or cat eats grass they have an upset stomach
I was wondering if you were going to make a new intro with you a Peach, one like you made with you, Buttercup and Ananda?
naw. i actually stopped using that intro long before Butter passed :). maybe in the future... dunno :)

look at what they make food with..... maybe fishing would be good and she could eat that?
You know you can ask your phone why Peach is eating grass u til she pukes? Use it for all that it’s worth Amanda! They tied us to them we might as well make the best out of it!📱
haha... i don't always trust what my phone tells me :)
