A Leek Loop - A 30 Mile Cycling Loop Using 2 Canals and 2 Railway trails
In this cracker of a ride we cycle from Stoke up the Caldon Canal towards Leek. We cross Leek and use the disused Churnet Valley Railway to make our way to Rudyard, once used for a Top Gear Challenge! From Rudyard we cycle alongside the Rudyard lake railway, before skirting the Peak District, enjoying some cracking views. We then use the Macclesfield Canal to make it to Congleton before finally using the Biddulph Valley way to complete the loop.

    HS2 was an undeniably massive net economic benefit... when it was planned to connect the north and south of England together (and eventually connect to Scotland). The projections were that the boost to the UK's economy would pay for the project in its first year of operation alone. Cancelling it was the most economically incompetent thing the Conservatives ever did, and I'm including Truss and responding to a global recession with public sector cuts in that. Cutting the line down is an extreme example of short term savings for long term losses.

    • @cyclingn8
      @cyclingn8 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I haven’t looked into the numbers too deeply but it was definitely a politically motivated move to cut it down rather than an economic one. I use the current west coast main line occasionally for work and it is rare not to be delayed along the way, we really need the extra capacity in my opinion. Thanks for watching!

    I've done this exact round a couple of times this year. Perfect gravel bike route, but does get a little bumpy on the canals in the countryside. Also plenty of pubs to stop at if you want to take it lesuirely. Nice to meet and chat with others out for a cycle/ walk too. I also discovered you can get to Rugby pretty car free too on a disused railway line from the canal at Leamington.

      It’s a shame there are some bumpy bits, no problem in the summer but can imagine parts get a bit muddy in the winter. Always meet nice people on the canals. Will have to check out that old rail line! Thanks for watching!

      @@cyclingn8Hi, would you say that this route is OK to cycle on a Brompton

      @@allanb2906 Some of the cobbles in the city centre would be a bumpy, but manageable, either taking it slow or getting off, they are only very short bits u see bridges. The worst part would be the grand union between Catherine fe barnes and lapworth. Some longer unsurfaced sections here that can be pretty bumpy, and probably muddy in winter. Again likely manageable on a Brompton if you’re willing to take it slow and maybe walk the odd section. So yes but be prepared for it to take some time. Thanks for watching!

      @cyclingn8 Thank-you for your prompt response. I would be looking to do this now in the spring or summer months when the probability of surface water is less than Oct - Mar. I'm retired now, so taking a leasuley ride is not an issue and would be planning to come down from Manchester on the train to complete this route and anything else I can find around the city to make a short visit worthwhile.

    I cycled that section the Grand Union canal from Aston junction to Solihull on my way to work for 10 years. I always wanted to know what some of the history was. Excellent video and thank you for putting in the effort. Keep up the good work.

      Glad you liked the video and the history in it, really enjoyed researching some of the local history for this one. Thanks for watching!

    Wouldn't it be nice if the youth of today didn't paint graffiti on every square inch of wall😤 Great video though, our family had a boat at the bottom of Knowle locks back in the 70s..

      It is shame every surface is covered in graffiti, don’t know what motivates people to do it. Thanks for watching!

    I have been waking part of that over the last two weeks. The northern end of the North Stratford Canal. Loved the guillotine lock and Shirley Drawbridge, one more walk to do and I've completed the loop. I wondered who the picture was on the tunnel. Great video, all the best, Andy 👍

      The guillotine lock was one of my favourite bits of history on that loop, great they kept it in place even though it’s no longer used. So much history around the canals, great to have them in the city. Thanks for watching!

    Yes Hockley Heath is a very deprived poor area of Birmingham how observant of you, and Dickens Heath is a is a council run social housing project housing a broad variety of deprived non working people

      Did you know you rode passed the old BSA bike and gun factory on of the most historical sites on the canal at small heath

      I knew they were there somewhere, but not the exact spot. So much history around the canals in Birmingham it was hard to pick which parts to talk about without making a 2 hour video lol
