13:17... The Hightown area of Congleton has a great chippy, bakers and buttie shop. Leave the canal and head up to the railway station.. shops just under the road bridge. Lovely video thanks!
This is great. You can go up and over Packmoor and get onto the old line from Tunstall to Kidsgrove too and go back via Bathpool Park and the Harecastle tunnel, Westport Lake etc. You can ride along the edge of those cobbled spillways if you're feeling brave... A small detour into Congleton would yield plenty of coffee and cake opportunities.
Great video. I've cycled this route many times myself. The two bottle kilns at the start of the video are near to Botteslow Street. Used to be rows & rows of terraces, where Stanley Matthews, the footballer was born. Riding from Hanford to Westport Lake is unrecognisable now. Forty years ago there were 'pot-banks' all the way along for miles. Now they are all completely gone & a lot of the area is derelict. Twyfords in Etrururia used to produce toilets that were exported all over the world. Now it's just an abandoned wreck. Very very sad. Stoke on Trent used to be the Ceramic Centre of The World. Now its full of car-parks & dustheads. Some great bike rides in Newcastle under Lyme too, on the old mineral railway line to Silverdale. Then up to Keele University. Down Keele bank back into Newcastle or three mile lane to Whitmore. On to stableford/Hanchurch...Hanchurch crossroads to Trentham Gardens. The Gardens back along the A34 to Newcastle !!
The industrial decline in Stoke is very sad, I’m sure more could have been done to preserve more of the history and heritage in places. I have ridden out to Silverdale on the disused market Drayton line, even had a peek in the tunnel (I have a video on this you might like) but never thought to li I it up with other routes, will have to check it out. Thanks for watching!
@@cyclingn8 no problems. I really enjoyed the watch and you've put a lot of effort into that information in the video. I'm a local gravel bike rider and there are some brilliant places to visit. If you ever fancy an up hill road challenge, try a route including Thornecliffe in Leek or the Mow Cop climb 😁
These videos do take a lot of research and effort to put together so glad your enjoyed it! Thanks for the route ideas, might check them out when I’m feeling fit!
Another great, enjoyable video. I have done this ride sometime ago. The Macclesfield canal was a bit rough at the time, looks better in your video. I often ride the other way when reaching the Macclesfield canal and make my way to the far end of Rudyard lake and then return via the Leek branch of the Caldon canal.
Glad you enjoyed the video, and yes I think I I was lucky the towpath had recently had a bit of maintenance on the Macclesfield canal, hopefully it’s kept in a good condition. I like the idea of heading to Rudyard and back into Stoke down the Caldon, will have to give it a go. Thanks for watching!
@@cyclingn8 Just to add... i did this loop on Wednesday, and i'm glad i didn't do it on the road bike. Some of the sections are incredibly rutted, and the amount of roots protruding through paths in various places is absurd! Great fun on the gravel bike though. I think i may also have seen the same heron!
Hi There, Nice loop, we are travelling to Essex from Tarvin Cheshire next May would like to do this on way home. Where would it be best for us to stay please.
That’s exactly what I have to do lol will have to do a ‘making of’ video some time with outtakes and the shots of me running back for the camera! Thanks for watching!
The Thomas Telford tunnel did have a tow path through it it was never a legging tunnel . The tow path was removed after part of it collapsed some time in the late nineteen hundreds
Thanks for clarifying! I assumed as it doesn’t have one today it never did, but as Telford always did his best to shorten journey times it makes sense he would have put one in. Thanks for watching!
Your welcome, thanks for watching. If you go to the Garmin link there is an option to download the gpx file from there, just click on the three dots, you don’t need a Garmin account.
I would agree Chell is part of the city, I thought I was leaving Chell when I said I was leaving Stoke, but I’m certainly no expert on local boundaries. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Use large parts of this route for running on a regular basis. Nice to hear some interesting history on the surrounding areas!
Thank you, lots of interesting history around Stoke, enjoyed looking into it for this video. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much. Great videos.
Your welcome, thanks for watching!

Thanks for the extra route info. I would t be brave enough to cycle on the edge of that spillway, I would end up in the canal! Thanks for watching!

Nice video 👍 the Leek line you mentioned has now been shelved.
Thanks for the update, seems a shame when I can imagine it would be a very useful commuter line. Thanks for watching!

I've done this a few times it's a nice ride, a hardtail MTB is my steed of choice the Macc canal towpath can be a bit rough and muddy .
Think I was lucky with the Mac canal towpath, was really pretty nice when I road it. Thanks for watching!
Perfect! I'm in Congleton and i've got on the BVW a number of times and always wanted to make a loop, rather than out and back.
Thanks for sharing.
Glad I could help, it’s a lovely route. Thanks for watching!

Yeah definitely one for the gravel bike!
This video was a joy to watch. Thank you.
Really glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!

Another great video, Nathan. Not done this one in a while...... Think I'll get myself over there!
Thank you, it’s a lovely little loop. I still have plans to follow the Caldon canal up to leek at some point too. Thanks for watching!
Many thanks for sharing
You welcome, and thanks for watching!
Great video as always mate
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
This is perfect, thank you :)
Glad you liked it and thanks for watching!
Lived in the area for 40 years and never knew that path was there…shocking 😮
Glad I could show it to you, thanks for watching!
Hi there was a foot bridge at Smallthorne I live just up the road great video atb Sam
Thanks for the info, glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video, and I've always thought there was a bridge over Bull Lane in Brindley Ford 🤯
It wouldn’t be easy to think that with how the trees are. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!

Anywhere in Hanley would work, you should be able to ride to the start point in Hanley park then. Thanks for watching!
I have visions of those shots where you riding off. Keep stopping and having to run back for the camera lol

I’d argue Chell is still Stoke on Trent, Knypersley is boarderline the edge of the ‘city’
I would agree Chell is part of the city, I thought I was leaving Chell when I said I was leaving Stoke, but I’m certainly no expert on local boundaries. Thanks for watching!
Is there car parking at the start of this ride,or where is the nearest car park,
Yes there is a pay and display car park in Hanley park, that’s where I parked as I’m not local. Thanks for watching!
Hi, did you transport your bike and if so where did you park?
I’m not local to Stoke so drove there and parked at a pay and display car park in Hanley park. Thanks for watching!
Some of these routes I've done. But not in one yet.
Definitely a nice loop try if you get the chance, especially while the towpath on the Mac canal has been trimmed. Thanks for watching!
