Nice one. If you take a left before the Harecastle tunnel and cross the road by Lidl you can pick up the old railway line that runs from Kidsgrove to Tunstall . Then get back to Westport lake off road albeit a few yards.
Riding on the tow path from Congleton to Kidsgrove isn’t brilliant because of the state of the path. I find it a better circular route to turn off your route at Brindley Ford, use the cycle path which climbs up to Turnhurst Road, use the side roads to drop down the other side and join the old “loop line” cycle track to Tunstall. A few side roads will then take you onto another old railway route which then ends up back at the canal at Westport Lake (where you rejoin your route). It’s a shorter loop but the surfaces are better for cycling.
I was lucky it hadn’t rained in a while and the towpath had been recently trimmed, although it was a bit bumpy in places. Can see it might not be as nice in winter or when the vegetation gets a bit long so thanks for the alternative and thanks for watching!

I’ve got that old railway line in my ‘to ride list’, like to use it to cycle from Stoke to Sandbach along route 5 of the NCN. Thanks is for watching!
Brilliant ride
