Games That Took A Dark Turn
We all love a good scare every once in a while, and there’s no better place to find that than in horror games. But what about non-horror games? Sometimes, the most shocking moments come from games we least expect.
For me, horror is most terrifying when it addresses real human issues, and these games blindsided me with just that.

Back when games used to be fun and not a chore like most modern 3d games
If you only play "Life is Strange" once, it's a nice experience. It's only when you play it a second time and decide on the exact opposite as last time and notice that the overall outcome and story arc stay the exact same with only minor deviations you notice that the game mechanic isn't quite as intelligent as it was advertised and you're majorly let down.
That is the case with most of these type of "choose your own adventure" kind of games. It's the same with The Walking Dead. It doesn't deminish the impact of some of its scenes though, as they are well executed!
@@GameTalesHQ True. I just thought the marketing approach was off for LiS because they tried to sell decision making as the main point although it wasn't in the end. If they chose the "twisty" story (pun intended) as their main selling point they could have avoided that kind of letdown. To be fair, I don't know how much they had to adjust the mechanic to what was doable within their time frame, so I've cut them some slack and filed it under "unfortunate".
Time to reinstall Sim City 4!
They Are Billions is another great isometric one!
Gun could do with a remake, with a continuation from where it left off, with plenty of side-missions and plenty of activities available for when the main story is complete, also maybe a suprise set of missions after completion...Great game, full of flavour and atmosphere!🤠💫
I played Gothic for the 9000th time in 2024, my friend if your not satisfied with the graphics of "Gothic 1" with all due respect DON'T install it, Gothic is a holy artifact and shall NOT be modified
I was perfectly fine with the graphics. When looking for mods to get the game in a playable state I tried out a couple of mods. After that I did a clean reinstall of the game to make it vanilla again, or so I thought.... It seems the Riisis Gothic 1 TextureMix V1.1 did not get uninstalled. This is the reason why the game's textures look slightly different. Also, I read somewhere that the DirectX patch made the game run smoother, and it did. In hindsight, I would've played without. Oh well, you live and you learn. I played Gothic 2 totally vanilla afterwards :)
I almost thought it was a game adaption of the gyro manga
Love the sim city 4 music
Every time I see even a split second of signalis in a video essay my head perks up like “my hyperfixation???👀👀👀👀”
I always adored the art style of Commandos 2, it's a shame more developers didn't create games based in that era with that artistic style.
I questioned why a video with this title needed a cw, then I remembered autoplay.
I think it's always good to give people a heads up. But yeah, it's mostly because of autoplay!
Reminds me of the Bloody Baron Quest in Witcher 3. Wasn't ready for that like at all.
@@dandyvision42 What a great quest that was!
Spec ops: the line had my entire guts sink into a black hole.. what an amazing delivery of dark and disturbing real events
I've always found that the prisoner segment of Tomb Raider (2013) reminded me of Outlast, which is one of my favourite horror games. But that section was unexpectedly scary in the action adventure game
I really liked that segment too! That's why I put it in the honorable mentions :)
wow, a videogame video essay with post-ironic horror themes that talks about spec ops the line! theres only like 500000000 of those already available! and wow, the guy talking has a low-tone unenthustiastic voice???? this is amazing!
@@pigslopenjoyer4595 Glad you enjoyed it!
pre rendered graphics are bad, which is why they arent used any more. Every one of those scenes would look 1000x better in 3d
@@scalz420 hard disagree
for anyone that doesn't understand how horrifically bad white phosphorus is should watch ChemicalForce's video on it
Totally agree with you. They still look awesome!
Unfortunately I largely disagree with the statement that combat is simply a stat check. Enemies can take minimum amount of damage regardless of your stats. With enough know how and being able to avoid damage or Parry enemy strikes, you can pretty much kill any enemy in the game at level 1. It takes time effort and concentration but it's doable. Getting more stats and becoming stronger just easier, but by no means does this make combat a simple stat check.
I was mainly talking about the ranged combat, since I went that route in my playtrough. I know you can master the melee system eventually, but as relatively new player, it is hard to figure out where to improve. Perhaps I was a little too harsh with calling it a stat check, but I still feel like the combat is servicable if you compare it to the game's better aspects :)
@GameTalesHQ that is somewhat true when talking about ranged, but even so you have so many good Dex weapon available for melee combat that you shouldn't feel constricted at any point.
No one’s talking about the Sim City 4 soundtrack? It gives me goosebumps
One of the best soundtracks of all time if you ask me!
@ I still play the game sometimes, it has something that today’s games don’t have
I loved commandos when it came out. Even my rubbish PC could manage it fine.
One moment for me is in Hollow Knight. You work so hard to finally approach your sibling, the Hollow Knight, who has been spewing infection across all of Hallownest infecting the minds of all its citizens. You fight and fight, until it lets out a screech. With that, its music shifts from a cryptic battle theme to a slow theme of dread and despair. And after that, the Hollow Knight turns its weapon on itself and begins stabbing its chest. It's finally become sentient and sees all the damage it caused. It recognizes this and in between fighting you, it fights itself and in turn the Radiance (the source of the infection). The musics swells and swells getting more dramatic as the Hollow Knight's movements become slower as it focuses more on killing itself rather than you. And once you kill your sibling, you absorb and seal the infection. Doing what your sibling could not, sealed away, forever
The classic Fallout 1 & 2 were released one year apart from eachother. They used this isometric 2D graphics but were full of story, mechanics, and depth. They were turn based combat. Now, Bethesda has no idea what Fallout is even about and every 5 years they put out a 3D shooter that is more like a Skyrim/Borderlands mashup than anything resembling the true spirit of Fallout
You're so Dutch coded I love it so much
@@elizabethmaria_9201 haha schuldig! 🙋🏼♂️

i knw this is pc centric, but ff7 for me always had the most beautiful renders
@@__shifty It did!
It is a crime you didn’t play the audio of Chloe finding Rachel’s body. I didn’t play the game but instead watched a playthrough and that moment was chilling. Ashley Burch sold that moment as the devastating reveal it was.
Amazing performance! I wanted to keep the pace of the video going
@ that’s fair, it was just such a great scene
I wasnt expecting the mass effect clip to hit hard, im autistic and got famly with more severe cases, my case isnt the worst and i heard about people with autism being abused but this one make me think.
The video is so short :(
At least it didn't waste your time :)
In Dragon Age: Origins the whole Deep Roads sequence is nightmarish You're probably going there with a couple levels on you. You probably saved the day along with your companions a couple of times, and feel invincible. Then you really face the threat of the Darkspawn. First, a crazed man that had to rely on cannibalism to survive. Then corpses and more corpses all around you. Then dwarf warriors just barely holding a spot. Then you slowly and slowly start to wander deeper and deeper into a thaig and flesh and stone meld into one another. A dark twisted poem rings in your ears then you discover WHY there are so much darkspawn. How they are made. Broodmothers. The whole sequence made my skin crawl and I had to actually give the game a pause after the boss fight
Origins was such a good game, it's the second RPG I ever played and it's still up there as one of my favorites. The Broodmother stuff was grim for sure.
Surprised you didn't bring up Life Is Strange. There's a little foreshadowing, but it really goes haywire
@@ChristopherMisterFur Bro, it is literally the second game I talk about
I think it's important to note these days that it's actually *harder* to produce these kinds of games then to simply make it 3D. The 3D scenes that produce the prerendered graphics need to be created regardless of the final outcome. At that point, you can either stick the models into your scene, add a camera, and press go, or you can painstakingly start breaking up the renders into sprites, laying them out by hand in your scene, adding all sorts of extra logic for character movement and barriers, etc. It's a ton of work, but it creates a wonderful final result.
@@puzzzl Yeah, I mention this in the video
Underrated? Its legitimately the best also no soundtrack has even come close. Auch a good game and i feel it's abondonware nowadays.
Almost no one knows about it, that's why I called it that. And yeah, it is abandonware sadly. It's such a good game and I think it's criminal that we haven't see a sequel or a spiritual sucessor to it.
@GameTalesHQ also agree, it was one of my favourites when I was young.
Lmfao those time codes, are you kidding?
Do you mean the chapters of the video? I chose to organize it this way so you won't accidentally get spoiled if you don’t want to. I mention the name of the game at the start of each section to avoid wasting time.
@@GameTalesHQ Ah, I figured they were like that to prevent people from going "Oh yeah, I've seen all those" and clicking off the video. My bad, video's great btw!
