When looking for mods to get the game in a playable state I tried out a couple of mods. After that I did a clean reinstall of the game to make it vanilla again, or so I thought.... It seems the Riisis Gothic 1 TextureMix V1.1 did not get uninstalled. This is the reason why the game's textures look slightly different. This was not my intention but alas, the video is already done. I didn't notice this because I had no reference on what the game should've looked like. Oh well, it is what it is!

I wish I was in your position, having only played Gothic once! The game has replayability as long as you haven´t done all factions. Once you have tried all factions multiple times (like me), you only go back for nostalgia hahaha. Although I love to play through the whole saga once in a while.
I can only recommend you play Gothic 2 and Gothic 3, as well as Risen and the Gothic fan-made mod ''Chronicles of Myrtana''. All of these games just hold special memories in us hardcore fans. Just in case, since many new players don't know this (and even many old ones), but you can dodge in the game (with i-frames) by holding ALT and pressing back (S or Arrow down key). Please note that the animation looks the same if you only press S, but that one doesn't have i-frames XD. Also if you installed Union you can change the controls to Gothic 2 controls in the ini, which allows you to use only 1 click actions to do everything except attacking in combat.

Gothic is great. I remember how awkward the controls felt, but with an hour playing it, it just became natural to me. I really like how simple and intuitive everything becomes after a while. It's not the type of game to make you confused about systems, but it gives you what you need and let you try things on your own. Now play Gothic 2 (the best) and Risen 1(weakest of the 3 but still good). You won't regret it.

I love watching modern takes on Gothic.
When it released in 2001, it was groundbreaking, an absolute machine melter.
I played it for the first time at the age of 11, in 2005, and was completely overwhelmed with the controls and scared to make my way alone to the Old Camp - I had to follow Diego and let him take out the young Scavenger that would block your path about halfway down the mountain.
At some point I'd figure out the action key system, but it would take me another two years before I finally played through the entire thing. It was awesome. This game made me a gamer.

The game actually predict that, at some point in the game you should either gain a free swamp weed and/or an potion made from minecrawler eggs that when consumed would rise your mana by just enough points to allow you to use the scroll.

Voice acting in Eglish version is pretty weird indeed, while in Polish version (and from what I read German and Russian) the dubbing was done by professionals who had previous experience working in tv/theater/radio spaces the direction of English dubbing is bit allover the place, HOWEVER it makes for interesting situation of having such old rpg voiced by people with mostly American/Atlantic accents and not yet another vague British one.

That's a nice video! You really understood what makes Gothic great and you were able to communicate it to the viewer just as well. Subscribed!
    Just some additional points:
    - The original voice over is german, it was directed by the developer. And it is brilliant. You are really missing out with this english garbage.
    - Gothic 2 with the Night of the Raven "DLC" is a much better game. It's bigger and every single mechanic or system is basically the same, just a little better compared to Gothic 1. Play it for the ultimate Gothic experience. People tend to forget how much better G2 is as a game because Gothic 1 has that brilliant setting.
    - IMO your review is best when you focus on your conclusions, when you connect game elements with your interpretation why that is great. Like 12:00 - 15:00. I do not think you need to go so much into detail how things work and explain as much. I find these "get it over with" basic explanation sections of reviews very tiring and I almost closed the video when yours started just like that. Maybe just cut it or condense it heavily for the next one?

Thank you! Yeah I've heard the german voice acting is a lot better.
Gothic 2 and it's expansion is definitely on the 'to play' list.
This video was a bit of a test for me, wasn't sure where to take it. I went for quite an in-depth approach for people like me who never played the game before.
I can see why this can feel as filler for a veteran player.
My usual content dives into the development of a game and it's legacy way more, while I keep the review part more brief. You will probably like that approach more!
      Thanks for the feedback :)

Yeah, the english voiceacting seems to be really weird in Gothic. It's a shame so few are willing to try playing it in German (unless you are German yourself), since the German voiceacting is simply brilliant. They chose to speak in a kind of dialect and slang that we refer to as "Ruhrpott Assis" (Ruhrpott is a region in Germany, while "Assi" means something like "fucker"). It fits perfectly with the setting of prisoners in a large scale jail, while also giving a simple down-to-earth feeling.
I hope you will play Gothic 2 as well. You explore a different part of the island, but also return to the area of Gothic 1 and meet a lot of the core npcs again.
While most people will recomment to play the addon, I think it might be a better idea to start with the vanilla version and play the addon in the second run, since the addon changes quite a bit.
Whichever version though, you might be delighted to hear, that the controls got optimized and easier to handle, although you still have to possibility to actuvate Gothic 1 controls.

As someone of a gothic fanatic i can tell you that your analysis is holding up.
However i do have some issues with your point about the weight system.
"it add nothing to the experience" it absolutly does, even though i prefer Gothic over Morrowind the weight system in morrowin was a really good immersive tool in adventuring.
Being far away from a settlement with full inventory you would think if you should continue on your journey or go back, you knew that it will cost time and that would impact your decisions.
The amount of potions and different utility items would also play a part here since you couldn't just take an endless amount of healing potions and go adventuring.
Each venture for exploration would require you to prepare accordingly, maybe you would need some water breathing potions because you'll be walking around underwater sections? Or maybe cure disease because you plan to raid a 6th house dungeon?
Weight system absolutely add a lot to the immersion and overall experience of the game.

    • @GameTalesHQ
      @GameTalesHQ  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

I agree with you, but in the way it's implemented in a lot of games it's mostly just frustrating. If it actually impacts gameplay and decision making, I'm all for it!

I know, the "souls" games are known for difficulty, but i finished most of them and nothing was as brutal as playing this game for the first time. Unintuitive controls really make you feel like you holding a weapon for the first time.

    • @GameTalesHQ
      @GameTalesHQ  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Well, that's mainly because in the Souls games (with the exception of Elden Ring and the start of DS1) you are nudged towards a particular path with enemies that are appropriate for your level. In Gothic, there are no restrictions and you do absolutely no damage to anything except molerats and scavengers. Gothic 1's combat isn't difficult but you gotta get strong before you can tackle most of the enemies. The controls don't help eighter haha. The souls games control really well, but the difficulty there is by moveset, design etc. Gothic is difficult purely based on numbers. Which isn't a bad thing of course, just a different flavour!

It's a bit sad to see your use of DX11 Renderer. For multiple reasons.
    1. you are not making full use of it. if you presss F11 you can crank up the view distance which is like the best thing about it
    2. the barrier is basically invisible in the DX11 Renderer. without it, you can see it all the time, see how it behaves during thunderstorms, and is just such an immersive, constant reminder of the setting. when you showed you walking into the barrier, you just walked into air and flew back. without it, you would have been able to actually see the barrier
    3. it changes the lighting (duh). this is kinda cool at first, when you see real time shadows, especially if you have torches and stuff late at night. without real time lighting, games had to bake their "lighting" and "shading" in with the textures. DX11 uses textures that were not supposed to be used with real time lighting. this is only a minor caveat though. the bigger is, that many areas, especially caves and the insides of buildings, become too poorly lit with real time lighting. the amount of lightsources were not made with the real time lighting in mind. it doesn't reach far enough and kinda ruins the vibe the devs were going for in many places
    4. see-through effects of textures (I think only used in Gothic 2) become solid in DX11 renderer, making them appear much, much less magical. i dont want to spoil where this is used, but there are a couple moments in G2
this is why I as a Gothic veteran, after at first being amazed when DX11 Renderer came out, play without renderer again nowadays.
sadly, many total conversion mods (that are amazing btw), like Archolos or Legend of Asshûn, were made with the DX11 Renderer in mind and it is basically required to handle the amount of on screen decorative items without dropping all your fps, and being able to see far enough. I remember not knowing there are islands out in the sea that i could go to, just cause i couldnt see far enough without the renderer.
so yea, I recommend at least trying the game without the renderer and see what you prefer. it definitely helps with performance and for some people it is required to even be able to launch the game
great to see you check out this immersive flawed masterpiece, please play gothic 2 and do a review of that as well!

    • @GameTalesHQ
      @GameTalesHQ  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Thanks for this elaborate comment. I mainly used it to increase performance, and I did notice some textures looking off (especially in the final dungeon with the color puzzle, I couldn't even make out any color). Yeah I might have overshot it with the DX11 mod for sure. I do think I had the view distance on max though! I'll probably play Gothic 1 again in the future and will definitely play it fully vanilla then. Gothic 2 might be worth a video as well, thanks for watching :)

@@GameTalesHQ you're welcome, I have a deep passion for Gothic 1 and 2 and love sharing my insights.
another suggestion, that really depends on you, if you could enjoy such a thing:
the original, german voiceacting is absolutely amazing. whereas the english version is bad; at least so bad that it can be funny again. if you don't mind it, you could theoretically play the game with german voiceacting, but english subtitles etc.. this might make it more enjoyable and immersive for you.
if you need help setting this up, let me know. I never really had to set this up, just recently though I played a polish mod with polish voiceacting and german subtitles, it was great. I like watching/playing my stuff in OT though anyway, whether it be film, anime or game. you do you!

Trying to criticize this game among its fanbase is a rough experience. The game's good but it has a fair bit of deserved criticism.
-Janky control scheme that feels like something out of 1993. By 2001 mouse control was mainstream. At least they fixed that god-awful controls in Gothic II.
-Linear story starting from chapter 3
-Lack of balance between builds, only strength warrior scales well throughout the game. Magic is there without being well defined (runes are simply sold by merchants lol), ranged character doesn't scale damage with dexterity and needs to rely on critical strike to deal ANY damage to late-game opponents, even with the best weapon in the game.
-Unfinished locations that are empty, though they look as if this should contain something
-Lots of bugs on release. Like really, a lot of bugs. This thing barely functioned. Modded DX11 + Union + whatever Gothic is nowhere close to 2001 Gothic.
