Check out my Gothic 2 review here: th-cam.com/video/lKjOXmSUHRU/w-d-xo.html When looking for mods to get the game in a playable state I tried out a couple of mods. After that I did a clean reinstall of the game to make it vanilla again, or so I thought.... It seems the Riisis Gothic 1 TextureMix V1.1 did not get uninstalled. This is the reason why the game's textures look slightly different. This was not my intention but alas, the video is already done. I didn't notice this because I had no reference on what the game should've looked like. Oh well, it is what it is!
Don't beat yourself up about it. Its just some textures and you still showed your true experience and that is what matters. Thank you for this video :)
@@JeditteeI'm playing it at the moment. But i would say he should play Gothic 2 before that. This mod is just so big and it helps to play Gothic 2 to get more and more into it.
Sooooo......maybe reviewing "Gothic 2" next? Highly recommend to check out the Sequel. It's probably the Best of the whole Gothic-Trilogy. And it's from 2002.
It's a bit sad, though. I hope the remake will introduce Gothic to a wider audience, because I think Gothic still has a lot of lessons to teach about game design, even some which are mostly not mentioned by reviews.
@@janjunek1216 as a huge fan and lots of playthrough with G1 and G2 I was surprised archolos really give so much new stuff but keeps the lore and graphic untouched
@@julianc691For me on Windows 10,Ryzen 7 2700x,16GB ram on 3000mhz,RTX3050 i needed no patch on steam. Just don't skip cutscenes. Whole pc freezes if you do. There's only 4-5 of them in the whole gothic 1
Just in case, since many new players don't know this (and even many old ones), but you can dodge in the game (with i-frames) by holding ALT and pressing back (S or Arrow down key). Please note that the animation looks the same if you only press S, but that one doesn't have i-frames XD. Also if you installed Union you can change the controls to Gothic 2 controls in the ini, which allows you to use only 1 click actions to do everything except attacking in combat. Ah and the voice acting is actually famous for how good it is in polish or german, it's just the english one that's bad HAHA.
I think for the english version of the game, it wasn't taken very seriously to begin with, and indie marketing wasn't where it is today. I mean, who would put big money into localizing the first project of a small german studio? Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy imo. Hopefully, the remake can do right by the original
It's Khor i nis, not Khor o nis! And yes, I saw your pinned comment about the armor, but I'd suggest you replay the game with the original armor. They are amazing! And thank you for your video, it is enlightening! I love it when new players discover Gothic!
Thanks for the correction! I'll probably revisit the game sometime in the future and I'll make sure there are no texture mods installed. And thank you for commenting :)
I remember bringing my PC to a friend with the plan of playing Counterstrike. Then I installed Gothic. In couple hours, we were both playing Gothic side by side, not caring about Counterstrike xD That was some 22 years ago. I feel old.
I grew up in Romania,Eastern Europe. Gothic was first introduced to me in 2004,getting the game on a magazine of computer enthusiasts (Level) when I was around 12. It made a significant impact on me and still is a big part of my childhood. To this day,(I am 31) I can still remember the map and know all the paths of the Colony
@@julianc691 hah, Level was originally a Czech magazine (and btw it is still coming out 29 years after it started, I have it subscribed), cool to see fellow reader of the romanian branch of it.
Gothic is great. I remember how awkward the controls felt, but with an hour playing it, it just became natural to me. I really like how simple and intuitive everything becomes after a while. It's not the type of game to make you confused about systems, but it gives you what you need and let you try things on your own. Now play Gothic 2 (the best) and Risen 1(weakest of the 3 but still good). You won't regret it. Anyway, after a GUN and a Gothic video, i had to subscribe. Good luck to you.
Yes, there are many exceptionally good games that are made like gothic even nowadays. It happens that you didn't search well enough among all the junk in nowadays oversaturated market. Do not rely on the "top 10 RPG games" kind of websites though.
@@SarumanBang there aren't any with gothic progression style and 3rd person camera. There are good rpg's out there (Baldur's Gate 3, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077 etc.) but none in the style of gothic.
Gothic 2 is a lot better WITHOUT the addon. Night of the Raven messes up the pacing of the game completely and leads to a lot less coherent experience overall. I recommend playing through the addon version only AFTER completing G2 vanilla.
@@traktorholik NotR isn't really that much more difficult once you know what you're doing, and before you know what you're doing it's kinda tedious. For new players I 100% recommend playing through the game without the addon at least once before going for NotR. Also, vanilla is a more cohesive experience. Jharkendar, as great as it is, breaks the flow of the main game really badly and makes the experience feel a lot more broken, wonky and overall less satisfying. Also, vanilla is plenty challenging for noobs.
@@nicolasmayer618 imho g3 is quite underrated :D don't get me wrong, it's still much worse than the opus magnum of this series - gothic 2, but still i find it very interesting and quite innovative like for example releasing cities from orcs/assasins, though quite badly implemented (many bugs, no follow up to the whole revolution), it was exciting to change the landscape of the whole ecosystem there, like your actions and decisions made a huge impact on how the world looks in the end, not just being a anonymous hero who fights in the shadow with some evil, while everything around looks untouched by the crisis
Well done! Love the factions, how they establish their society, and the power progression. I wish we would get more RPGs where we can see the growth from "nobody" into a skilled warrior.
Interesting is, all Piranha Bytes Games are built that way, technicaly they Always Made the Same Game 🤔 in my opinion the best Piranha bytes Games are, Gothic 1&2 and Risen 1, elex 1 was OK
Worth mentioning that the German voice acting (thr games original language) is absolutely phenomenal. It has a truly legendary status to this day. German gamers still reference and quote Gothic frequently.
You need to try the best mod for gothic which is: Chronicles Of Myrtana Archolos, this is much bigger and larger projekt than G1 and for sure you will love it so much. Greetings from Poland
It's a summer time game for me. it's one of the few games I've lost time in. When I was in High school I was playing Gothic 3. One minute it was 6:30 and I got done eating dinner the next it was 2 in the morning and I had no idea. My parents had gone to bed and I was in a moving time pocket. lol
aye aye brother, can't be a year without a Gothic 1 & 2 playthrough for me. Last year I talked in my brother-in-law to give these games a try since he always heard about 'em and wanted to give 'em a shot. My man took 27 minutes to figure out how to pick up an item :^) But the controls of these games (arrow keys + CTRL) is like second nature to me. Even with community patches and all sorts of control enhancements there are, I can't but play keyboard only. PS: it's literally 3 days since I finished Gothic 1 this year, gon' give it some time and hop onto Gothic 2 which this year I'm gonna play with the mod Returnings which I gave a shot couple years back, but from what I've heard the newer version 2.0 is much less frustrating and tons of bullshit elements are gone, so hey, might as well give it a shot and if it's gon' be bad? I can always start a new game on a regular version innit?
Great job on the video, really enjoyed your use of in-engine free cam shots! P.S. The switch ports of G1 and G2 have a redisigned inventory UI, which is a lot more intuitive. It's a shame that THQ Nordic didn't add it to the PC version.
Thank you! It was a lot of fun to fly around the map and capture all the little details. Ah those quality of life features would be most welcome for sure!
It's not hard to add the advanced inventory mod to both Gothic games now especially if you have it on steam where you can use workshop. It's basically the same thing as the Switch inventory.
I still can remember the feeling I had first playing Gothic in 2005 at the age of 9. The atmosphere totally soaked me in. Dying at nearly every monster, save ore for buying a new sword, killing the first blood fly becoming a shadow and so on. I was going to bed nearly every day thinking about what to do next in Gothic. This is what I consider a good game and honestly there aren't that much on the market outside the Gothic universe. Maybe KCD, I am looking forward to the 2nd and hope the Gothic remake will keep the great things from the original 😊
Yes! KCD was in that regard what I always hoped Skyrim would be after I also played Oblivion. But KCD kind lacked the density of G1 or G2, one could say "a bit too realistic for it's own good" in my opinion. Haven't encountered anything quite like it either so far 😢
Mod support is a big one for me. Especially when it comes to Gothic 2, there are just so many awesome mods out there that range from changing small aspects of the game to being total conversions.
Nostalgia (for simpler times) Any chance you might cover Gothic II Night of The Raven & the spiritual successor of the OG Gothic titles: The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos? PS Puik werk kerel.
In the Polish version (CDPR is a Polish company) the voice acting was great and one of the many reasons to love this game. It was also the first such game with full Polish version so it's extra meaningful.
I never realized how minimalistic my favorite rpg is. But the lack of minihep, helper UI, and general lack of tips. This just underline the grittiness of the world and is what makes Gothic so immersive.
Man i love the gothic games as they are part of my childhood. Have played all three games at least 10 runs each as there is still so much to explore even after you finished all factions. The world design is unmatched to this day.
I'm a Gothic Veteran. Put a lot of time and love in the first and second (with addon). Your analysis of the game hits the nail on the head. Great video. Cheers.
Truly the best gaming experience I've had in my life. When I was 12 I was playing it simultaneously with my cousin. We constantly discussed our progress, discussed what to do next, what camp is the best, even visited each other daily to watch each other playing this amazing game at that age as youngsters. I remember it like it was yesterday, 20 years after.
I played Gothic 2 first, and Gothic 1 much later. I still have great memories from trying that game (g1) for the first time, but for me it doesn't come near the level of enjoyment that I had with Gothic 2. I loved the variety in environments, and the game felt much less depressing than Gothic 1, which in the long run is a welcome change. I hope you will give that game a chance as well :) , Sincerely, a fellow Dutch Gothic fan
Early 2000's and being a teenager. I still cherish dearly memories of Gothic 1 and 2, heck even of Gothic 3. Gothic 1 really was special for that time period, even though a bit clunky but had great environment, atmosphere, soundtrack and lvling/skill system. Miss the good old (simpler) days.
gothic 2 to this day is my favourite game. there is nohing comparable to this franchise in terms of open world design. everyone who makes games in this genre should study it.
Nothing gives me such a strong feelings of nostalgia than this game, besides the lord of the rings (books and movies). I was a young teenager when i played it and i never played it trough for quiet a long time, when i did, i had this empty feeling of not knowing what to do with my life. Every day i got on the bus to school, my friends and i discussed what we found out. No game ever was so immersive afterwards... we are in our early 30's and we still use the inside jokes and references of gothic dialogues! Please tell me I'm not alone with my nostalgia!
I love this game so much I can´t even describe it. The real joy is in multiple playthroughs. Everyone who got emerced in this game will understand and is blessed actually.
Gothic is my favorite game and your review is very good and accurate, excellent content and I hope you can play gothic 2 and Archolos chronicles of myrtana
As a long time player I love to see new reviews, especially from first time players. Question for you, do you think you'll keep replaying it in the future or was it one-off adventure?
I think I'll revisit it in a couple of years, go with another faction and focus on another build maybe. We'll see! I'll probably give Gothic 2 a shot before that though. Thanks for watching :)
after you finish Gothic 2 I highly recommend Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos. Fan mod of size of a new game, professional polish voice overs (it sounds unlikely but you'll get used to it very quickly). Piranha bytes themselves watched and supported the mod creation. It takes the best from the gothic series and enhances it a lot.
90s kids will remember this. Back in 2007-2009 this game marked my childhood. So much joy, such a beautiful journey. Scary also i can say, but veery interesting. Forever in my heart ❤
That is the best comment ever!! I love the tell people, "play this game", "you can't do better than that", but unfortunately I didn't have any success!
You should try Gothic 2 with addon "Night of the raven". When you finish it, next thing you should check is the modification to Gothic 2 - The Chronicles Of Myrtana: Archolos. To be honest, I envy you that you can try that games for the first time.
Welcome to the beautiful and amazing world of Gothic, these 2 games are my favorite games of all time and i love them deeply. Its such a joy to find out that people are trying these games for the first time today, they are UNIQUE experiences worth it all the way
I cried when i finished gothic 1... i was a kid at that time. Oh man the feelings i got playing this game. Also gothic 2 notr.. my god these 2 are absolute masterpieces. They deserve a remake with extended gameplay
Very few gaming communities have such a following as the Gothic series. How many games can get so many devs that craft mods the span of fully fledged games for free? For a 20+ year old game?
I would like to mention 1 important aspect, that you've not mentioned and is a common issue in many modern games. The fact, that you will not hoard things, spells or items, because every spell, every item can be of a use, either for a certain type of enemy or scenario or just directly sold. Also the weapon types are importantas well, because you clearly do more dmg to a golem with a mace, than with a sword. I think the fact, that they tought of this back in 2001 is amazing - a hardcore Gothic 1&2 fan!
God i love that game. First time i played it i was young, barely knew English and had a PC so bad i needed to turn the music off, so the game would stutter a bit less. Still loved every minute of it. Now i replay it every couple of years. Its very nostalgic for me.
I hope you go back and review Gothic 2 as well. I think that game took the foundation of Gothic 1, which is by today's standards very outdated and fixed most of the issues. Even all these years later I think Gothic 2 is PB's magnum opus. Funnily enough I am not a big fan of most single player RPGs because they just don't hold up to Gothic 2 in particular.
I love that people are still playing this game and talking about it. If you liked Gothic 1, I bet you'll like Gothic 2 as well. I recommend playing it without the expansion the first time around, then with, and then if you want even more playing it with the L'Hiver mod. The reason I wouldn't start with those add-ons is because they can be overwhelming and quite dramatically increase the difficulty.
There is one thing worth mentioning regarding "undeveloped" story. Apperently team working on gothic has a lot of ideas about "main story" of the game and so lots of actual story was prepared and executed in like last 4 months of production
Fajnie, że zagrałeś w taki kultowy polski tytuł. Polska wyprodukowała jeszcze 3 części (Gothic 2, Gothic 2 Noc Kruka, Gothic 3, ale Zmierzch Bogów i Arcania to już niemieckie gry). Polskie pozdro! EDIT: A i taki wąsaty polsko-rumuńskii frajer kradnie Ci materiały, to mu możesz copy-strike'a zgłosić szefie!
He did mention me in the description, so it's fine. Sadly there were no subtitles so I couldn't understand most of what he was saying. And yeah, I will definitely try Gothic 2 and it's mods 👌🏼👌🏼
Back in 2002 when I first played this I was blow away and so excited to see where these kind of RPGs will go in next 10-20 years. Sadly I don't think so anymore.
I played the game in Polish and the dubbing was done by all professional VAs, some of them voicing ads in the TV commercials too. That probably added a good bit to the atmosphere ngl. But it's hard to say if playing a game in your non-native language would really lead to more immersion - probably unlikely.
The only thing i feel sad about non german people is that they cant experience the top tier German VA for it. It adds so much Character to each npc with their rough Voices.
i always have to wonder, if this is might be the most atmospheric game ever made. from background story, gameplay, characters, sound to intelligent enemy placement... it all comes together, to create a feeling that only a few games can just get close to! ligthning in a bottle!
Gothic 2 fixes a lot of annoyances and shortcomings of the 1st game. It's my most replayed game ever. Archolos is a masterpiece too, I hope it gets an english voice dub at some point, absolutely deserves it.
That's a nice video! You really understood what makes Gothic great and you were able to communicate it to the viewer just as well. Subscribed! Just some additional points: - The original voice over is german, it was directed by the developer. And it is brilliant. You are really missing out with this english garbage. - Gothic 2 with the Night of the Raven "DLC" is a much better game. It's bigger and every single mechanic or system is basically the same, just a little better compared to Gothic 1. Play it for the ultimate Gothic experience. People tend to forget how much better G2 is as a game because Gothic 1 has that brilliant setting. - IMO your review is best when you focus on your conclusions, when you connect game elements with your interpretation why that is great. Like 12:00 - 15:00. I do not think you need to go so much into detail how things work and explain as much. I find these "get it over with" basic explanation sections of reviews very tiring and I almost closed the video when yours started just like that. Maybe just cut it or condense it heavily for the next one?
Thank you! Yeah I've heard the german voice acting is a lot better. Gothic 2 and it's expansion is definitely on the 'to play' list. This video was a bit of a test for me, wasn't sure where to take it. I went for quite an in-depth approach for people like me who never played the game before. I can see why this can feel as filler for a veteran player. My usual content dives into the development of a game and it's legacy way more, while I keep the review part more brief. You will probably like that approach more! Thanks for the feedback :)
Enderal is a german total conversion mod for Skyrim that also has alot of Gothic elements, especially the region based enemy difficulty (it comes with a very good english voice cast too, its very easy to install on Steam, you dont have to download anything anywhere else. I would take the "Special Edition" Version of Skyrim for a more stable version)
This had to compete with Morrowind 20 years ago. And it was better. It already had full speech, while in Morrowind you had to read through endless pages of text.
It's a bit sad to see your use of DX11 Renderer. For multiple reasons. 1. you are not making full use of it. if you presss F11 you can crank up the view distance which is like the best thing about it 2. the barrier is basically invisible in the DX11 Renderer. without it, you can see it all the time, see how it behaves during thunderstorms, and is just such an immersive, constant reminder of the setting. when you showed you walking into the barrier, you just walked into air and flew back. without it, you would have been able to actually see the barrier 3. it changes the lighting (duh). this is kinda cool at first, when you see real time shadows, especially if you have torches and stuff late at night. without real time lighting, games had to bake their "lighting" and "shading" in with the textures. DX11 uses textures that were not supposed to be used with real time lighting. this is only a minor caveat though. the bigger is, that many areas, especially caves and the insides of buildings, become too poorly lit with real time lighting. the amount of lightsources were not made with the real time lighting in mind. it doesn't reach far enough and kinda ruins the vibe the devs were going for in many places 4. see-through effects of textures (I think only used in Gothic 2) become solid in DX11 renderer, making them appear much, much less magical. i dont want to spoil where this is used, but there are a couple moments in G2 this is why I as a Gothic veteran, after at first being amazed when DX11 Renderer came out, play without renderer again nowadays. sadly, many total conversion mods (that are amazing btw), like Archolos or Legend of Asshûn, were made with the DX11 Renderer in mind and it is basically required to handle the amount of on screen decorative items without dropping all your fps, and being able to see far enough. I remember not knowing there are islands out in the sea that i could go to, just cause i couldnt see far enough without the renderer. so yea, I recommend at least trying the game without the renderer and see what you prefer. it definitely helps with performance and for some people it is required to even be able to launch the game great to see you check out this immersive flawed masterpiece, please play gothic 2 and do a review of that as well!
Thanks for this elaborate comment. I mainly used it to increase performance, and I did notice some textures looking off (especially in the final dungeon with the color puzzle, I couldn't even make out any color). Yeah I might have overshot it with the DX11 mod for sure. I do think I had the view distance on max though! I'll probably play Gothic 1 again in the future and will definitely play it fully vanilla then. Gothic 2 might be worth a video as well, thanks for watching :)
@@GameTalesHQ you're welcome, I have a deep passion for Gothic 1 and 2 and love sharing my insights. another suggestion, that really depends on you, if you could enjoy such a thing: the original, german voiceacting is absolutely amazing. whereas the english version is bad; at least so bad that it can be funny again. if you don't mind it, you could theoretically play the game with german voiceacting, but english subtitles etc.. this might make it more enjoyable and immersive for you. if you need help setting this up, let me know. I never really had to set this up, just recently though I played a polish mod with polish voiceacting and german subtitles, it was great. I like watching/playing my stuff in OT though anyway, whether it be film, anime or game. you do you!
When i got Gothic 1 i was 14 years old. tried to play it, but did not know how to pick up any stuff. so i quiet. my cousin came by and ask me what games i have and saw Gothic 1 and played it. I saw him picking up something and let me tell how he did it. i pushed him away and started playing. months later, after my 6th playthrough, i dreamd about the game and had feelingd toward it like i was in love.
Btw if you go old camp fire mage first, then later on join the water-mages, you'll be able to become necromancer later on and learn 6th circle of magic with xardas. At least thats what i remember from my childhood. Then you can use uriziel rune which is super strong, and also spam skeletons and demons.
Thank you so much for playing our POLISH game :) Its so awesome to see even after 20+ years, new players visits old grandpa Gothic. There is a loooot to talk about, but only i can just write some comment, way too long. The best thing is the freedom that u have in gothic. Do whatever, go where do you want but game will show you that you are too newbie to go there etc. No markers and shit, game doesnt takes you by your hand, this is what i hate about new games, markers, lines on the ground etc. Let the players think and listen to NPCs that will tell you what to do, where to go, give a hint. No skipping dialogs just to speed run a game, go where the marker is. Do your thing, take a quest from whatever. You can immerse with the character that you are in new place, you dont know no one, trying figuring out shit as it goes by your own and how to escape that place. There is much more. Try gothic 2 night of the raven if you didnt already And our POLISH crazy fan mod, its huge, trush. The Chronicles Of Myrtana: Archolos
man I love G1...probably the most out of the series. It has incredible charm, interesting characters, cool locations.. I played G2 and G3 and really like them too, but G1 is like a hug from an old friend. Love it.
I played Gothic for the 1st time around 2012 or 2013. I played through it, and I thought it was great. It made me want to play the other Gothic games, then the Risen series, and then the Elex series. Some games are better than others (I did not beat all of them), but overall they're great, and I became a fan of Piranha Bytes. RIP Piranha Bytes.
The good thing is, you don't have to play with the vanilla controls or the vanilla inventory if you don't want to. There are mods to port the inventory and controls from Gothic 2. I would share my game with you (which i managed to get perfectly preconfigured), but sadly it's in Spanish. I show it briefly in my channel. I recommend you play Gothic 2 + its expansion, it's even better than Gothic 1 and TBH the best game i've ever played. Next is Chronicles of Myrtana, an addon for Gothic 2 made by the community, which is a completely new game in itself.
I wish I was in your position, having only played Gothic once! The game has replayability as long as you haven´t done all factions. Once you have tried all factions multiple times (like me), you only go back for nostalgia hahaha. Although I love to play through the whole saga once in a while. I can only recommend you play Gothic 2 and Gothic 3, as well as Risen and the Gothic fan-made mod ''Chronicles of Myrtana''. All of these games just hold special memories in us hardcore fans. I wasn´t even born when Gothic 2 came out, and still here I am, subscribing to a YT channel because he made a review of my favourite game. Thanks for this, I hope you enjoy the other titles I mentioned. It´s the best time to be a new Gothic fan, with the upcoming Remake and everything. Cheers.
Looks like you understood the success of gothic better than the later Piranha Bytes team, which just lost it after Risen 1. Btw, you should play Gothic 2, since Piranha Bytes even got better at that one. Gothic 2 NoR is good as well, but they increased the difficulty quite a lot
The funny thing about this game - and Prianha bytes other games - is that there are only 2 types of enemies. The one you can kill with just 1 or 2 hits. And the ones who will kill you with just 1 or 2 hits. That way you always know wether or not you should be in a certain area at this time - or not.
Wonderful video! Your intro already amazed me and you kept the high quality up. Great show to tell, well structured, nice execution of the comparison of the voice actor. Keep up the video quality with such game immerson and music while reviewing!
I don't know if this was ever mentioned here, but there is a good (and quite archaic) reason why the first chapter of Gothic was so good: Chapter 1 was the demo of the game back in Germany. If I remember it correctly ... its' almost 25 years ago.... the demo ended right after you joined a faction. I also think that the In Extremo concert in the old camp was also in the demo. In the full version, the concert took place in chapter 2. I think it got cut for the international release though. Having the first chapter as the demo was already very outdated in 2000, as the shareware model pretty much died out a few years earlier. Oh and I also remember that the developer didn't include mouse support in their early builds. At least until either the company or the gaming press told them that this couldn't fly. (I specifically say gaming press because I'm sure I heard this in one of their previews of the game). Again this was the year 2000/2001, 6 years after Windows 95 was released, where mouse input became the absolut standard.
I get goosebumps everytime talks about gothic. Can't tell you all in words how much I love this game. Especially the music ambiance and story. Definitely I'm gonna subscribe to you. This is a very good and informative review for new players.
Man this makes me want to play the new one, I REALLY hope they keep all the stuff that made it unique and just make it play and look great for a modern game!
It's great to see that Gothic can be still appreciated by current generation of gamers. The AAA industry focuses so much on the flashy and marketable aspects of games that some younger people I know, looked and screenshots from the game and decided it has to be some old crappy game propped up by nostalgia of its generation. Which brings me to the last thing you said - being hopefull for the remake, have you played the preview? It was so bad I have to vent some steam off whenever I see gothic content, it's being made Into an action RPG? Like what? It's like someone took LOTR - Fellowship of The Ring and decided it has too Few explosions so now Sam carries a sack of grenades which he and Frodo chuck at wraiths... I hope someone regains thei sences and reverts this direction.
I am 28 years old, so I've been gaming since the early 2000s. That's probably why I can stomach these older titles, as I grew up with lots of them. Personally I think graphics are very low on the priority list when looking at a game. I think gameplay, story, immersion and atmosphere are WAY more important. That's probably why I enjoyed Gothic so much. I'll definitely do coverage of the upcoming remake if I can get access to it (I might be able to get a review code, fingers crossed) btw: I just started my playtrough of Gothic 2, so keep an eye out for the video in the coming weeks :)

Which one of the patches I have to install from steam? All of them?
And even better is fanmade Chronicals of Myrtana Archolos. That truly is a masterpiece faithful to the source material.
@@julianc691 just look up guides on 'Mondgesänge', its the official community forum
Good to know, I wasn't aware!
Yes, the brilliant voice over is a good chunk of the cult status in PL
I think for the english version of the game, it wasn't taken very seriously to begin with, and indie marketing wasn't where it is today. I mean, who would put big money into localizing the first project of a small german studio? Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy imo. Hopefully, the remake can do right by the original
Russian is also good
What the heck is i-frame.
@@GameTalesHQ When I watched the video I accidently said out lout "Es heißt Khorinis!" My GF came into the room asking what I was doing.
I remember bringing my PC to a friend with the plan of playing Counterstrike. Then I installed Gothic. In couple hours, we were both playing Gothic side by side, not caring about Counterstrike xD That was some 22 years ago. I feel old.
Playing Gothic around that time must've been mind blowing.
@@GameTalesHQ it sure was.

I'll probably play them at some point. And glad to have you on board!
I still hold these games especially gothic 2 as some of my most beloved ones. I am sad that games are just not made like this anymore.
Yes, there are many exceptionally good games that are made like gothic even nowadays. It happens that you didn't search well enough among all the junk in nowadays oversaturated market. Do not rely on the "top 10 RPG games" kind of websites though.
@@despisel Why not name some of these good games though
@@despisel give me a list of that games

You have to try gothic 2 night of the raven, trust me you'll love it
And after that pretend that Gothic 3 and 4 doesn’t exist and play Risen 1. After that pretend Piranha Bytes didn’t release anything else xD
Gothic 2 is a lot better WITHOUT the addon. Night of the Raven messes up the pacing of the game completely and leads to a lot less coherent experience overall. I recommend playing through the addon version only AFTER completing G2 vanilla.
@@khatack Its too easy for me. I love NotR because od the difficulty
@@nicolasmayer618 imho g3 is quite underrated :D don't get me wrong, it's still much worse than the opus magnum of this series - gothic 2, but still i find it very interesting and quite innovative
like for example releasing cities from orcs/assasins, though quite badly implemented (many bugs, no follow up to the whole revolution), it was exciting to change the landscape of the whole ecosystem there, like your actions and decisions made a huge impact on how the world looks in the end, not just being a anonymous hero who fights in the shadow with some evil, while everything around looks untouched by the crisis
Well done! Love the factions, how they establish their society, and the power progression. I wish we would get more RPGs where we can see the growth from "nobody" into a skilled warrior.
Thanks! Yes, that zero to hero power curve is lots of fun!
Kingdom Come Deliverance is the best one, if you haven't played it yet

Interesting is, all Piranha Bytes Games are built that way, technicaly they Always Made the Same Game 🤔 in my opinion the best Piranha bytes Games are, Gothic 1&2 and Risen 1, elex 1 was OK
Worth mentioning that the German voice acting (thr games original language) is absolutely phenomenal. It has a truly legendary status to this day. German gamers still reference and quote Gothic frequently.

Ahh Gothic, my old love. I still replay this game series every year, lol. Mainly during Christmas time. It's so magical.
My man took 27 minutes to figure out how to pick up an item :^)
But the controls of these games (arrow keys + CTRL) is like second nature to me.
I can always start a new game on a regular version innit?
my fucking guy, i do the same it truly is magical

@@Orimthekeyacolite yeah I was just playing along with the joke. Although I personally don't really enjoy Skyrim that much.
That's a level of editing I'd like to get close to in the future. Great in-depth review, I enjoyed it a lot!🔥

Glad you enjoyed, greetings from the Netherlands :)
As an Australian, I love this game and I feel so luckily I was introduced to it back in 2005
Truly the perfect open world in my opinion! Often less is more!
I wonder if there is a replayability index for games. There's something about Gothic that keeps people coming back to it over and over again.
Nostalgia
Atmosphere
It’s the fact that it’s a very fun and unique experience, no other RPG does what Gothic does.
Mod support is a big one for me. Especially when it comes to Gothic 2, there are just so many awesome mods out there that range from changing small aspects of the game to being total conversions.
Nostalgia, whole vibe of the game, and mods
Nostalgia (for simpler times)
Any chance you might cover Gothic II Night of The Raven & the spiritual successor of the OG Gothic titles: The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos?

I'll definitely play it in the future! Thanks for stopping by :)
Same did I, was very unusual experience listening all the backreferences from G2 to G1 and not even having an internet to imagine, what is all about 😄
Had the complete opposite experience. Played g1 first, so when i played the demo of g2 i first was disappointed that it looked so colourful.

I've just started my playtrough! Keep an eye out for the video in the coming weeks :)
Hearing that guitar again...
it just puts a smile on my face.
after you finish Gothic 2 I highly recommend Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos. Fan mod of size of a new game, professional polish voice overs (it sounds unlikely but you'll get used to it very quickly). Piranha bytes themselves watched and supported the mod creation. It takes the best from the gothic series and enhances it a lot.

Very few gaming communities have such a following as the Gothic series. How many games can get so many devs that craft mods the span of fully fledged games for free? For a 20+ year old game?
Not many, that's for sure!
i had goosebumps just from seeing few second of gameplay walkthrough and remembering all the good times
welcome to the colony
I would like to mention 1 important aspect, that you've not mentioned and is a common issue in many modern games. The fact, that you will not hoard things, spells or items, because every spell, every item can be of a use, either for a certain type of enemy or scenario or just directly sold. Also the weapon types are importantas well, because you clearly do more dmg to a golem with a mace, than with a sword. I think the fact, that they tought of this back in 2001 is amazing - a hardcore Gothic 1&2 fan!
Realistic day and night npcs routines ✔️

The most realistic rpg ever,25 years ago..🤯
Lots of people have been asking for it, so i'll probably do a video on it in the future!
The moment you showed Nyras you got a like! Great Video man!

Gothic 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games, even with their flaws. Great video!
I can see why, thanks!
When the game came out it looked fantastic ...but gameplay and world building were unmatched.
Still really impressive today!
Archolos is a masterpiece too, I hope it gets an english voice dub at some point, absolutely deserves it.
this was the game of my childhood, i fell in love with the series
That's a nice video! You really understood what makes Gothic great and you were able to communicate it to the viewer just as well. Subscribed!
Just some additional points:
- The original voice over is german, it was directed by the developer.
The Polish voice over is also great, and the voice of the Nameless is iconic in Poland.
Enderal is a german total conversion mod for Skyrim that also has alot of Gothic elements, especially the region based enemy difficulty
(it comes with a very good english voice cast too, its very easy to install on Steam, you dont have to download anything anywhere else. I would take the "Special Edition" Version of Skyrim for a more stable version)
This had to compete with Morrowind 20 years ago. And it was better. It already had full speech, while in Morrowind you had to read through endless pages of text.
Morrowind had loading screens everywhere. The engine was amazing for it's time.
@@zadarthule Correct. And Gothic hardly had any loading screens. Only when you entered the mines or the Temple of the Sleeper.
sooooo many memories, loved this game, this was my childhood game
It's a bit sad to see your use of DX11 Renderer. For multiple reasons.
1. you are not making full use of it. if you presss F11 you can crank up the view distance which is like the best thing about it
2. the barrier is basically invisible in the DX11 Renderer. without it, you can see it all the time, see how it behaves during thunderstorms, and is just such an immersive, constant reminder of the setting. when you showed you walking into the barrier, you just walked into air and flew back. without it, you would have been able to actually see the barrier
3. it changes the lighting (duh). this is kinda cool at first, when you see real time shadows, especially if you have torches and stuff late at night. without real time lighting, games had to bake their "lighting" and "shading" in with the textures. DX11 uses textures that were not supposed to be used with real time lighting. this is only a minor caveat though. the bigger is, that many areas, especially caves and the insides of buildings, become too poorly lit with real time lighting. the amount of lightsources were not made with the real time lighting in mind. it doesn't reach far enough and kinda ruins the vibe the devs were going for in many places
4. see-through effects of textures (I think only used in Gothic 2) become solid in DX11 renderer, making them appear much, much less magical. i dont want to spoil where this is used, but there are a couple moments in G2
this is why I as a Gothic veteran, after at first being amazed when DX11 Renderer came out, play without renderer again nowadays.
sadly, many total conversion mods (that are amazing btw), like Archolos or Legend of Asshûn, were made with the DX11 Renderer in mind and it is basically required to handle the amount of on screen decorative items without dropping all your fps, and being able to see far enough. I remember not knowing there are islands out in the sea that i could go to, just cause i couldnt see far enough without the renderer.
so yea, I recommend at least trying the game without the renderer and see what you prefer. it definitely helps with performance and for some people it is required to even be able to launch the game
great to see you check out this immersive flawed masterpiece, please play gothic 2 and do a review of that as well!
@@GameTalesHQ you're welcome, I have a deep passion for Gothic 1 and 2 and love sharing my insights.
another suggestion, that really depends on you, if you could enjoy such a thing:
the original, german voiceacting is absolutely amazing. whereas the english version is bad; at least so bad that it can be funny again. if you don't mind it, you could theoretically play the game with german voiceacting, but english subtitles etc.. this might make it more enjoyable and immersive for you.
if you need help setting this up, let me know. I never really had to set this up, just recently though I played a polish mod with polish voiceacting and german subtitles, it was great. I like watching/playing my stuff in OT though anyway, whether it be film, anime or game. you do you!
Yes, Renderers...
They make old games more "modern", but with what cost? 🤔
Now Gothic 2 😊
Btw if you go old camp fire mage first, then later on join the water-mages, you'll be able to become necromancer later on and learn 6th circle of magic with xardas. At least thats what i remember from my childhood. Then you can use uriziel rune which is super strong, and also spam skeletons and demons.
This game ruined most RPGs for me.
Morrowind? Lifeless.
Oblivion? Inhabitated by robots.
Skyrim? Better but far away from the atmosphere of Gothic.
Thank you so much for playing our POLISH game :)
Its so awesome to see even after 20+ years, new players visits old grandpa Gothic.
Try gothic 2 night of the raven if you didnt already
And our POLISH crazy fan mod, its huge, trush.

RIP Piranha Bytes.
try gothic 2
Definitely a game I will play in the future!
Cheers.
Lot's of people have recommended the fan made mod to me, will definitely give that a look!
Thank you for watching and subbing
Looks like you understood the success of gothic better than the later Piranha Bytes team, which just lost it after Risen 1. Btw, you should play Gothic 2, since Piranha Bytes even got better at that one. Gothic 2 NoR is good as well, but they increased the difficulty quite a lot
It's just legendary! This game will be with us for all our lives! A 41 years old Gothic fan! Keep playing it.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I don't know if this was ever mentioned here, but there is a good (and quite archaic) reason why the first chapter of Gothic was so good:
Chapter 1 was the demo of the game back in Germany.
Thanks for the information, I didn't know this. And yeah, the steam version doesn't have the concert sadly :(
I get goosebumps everytime talks about gothic. Can't tell you all in words how much I love this game. Especially the music ambiance and story. Definitely I'm gonna subscribe to you. This is a very good and informative review for new players.
Thank you!
I'll definitely do coverage of the upcoming remake if I can get access to it (I might be able to get a review code, fingers crossed)
btw: I just started my playtrough of Gothic 2, so keep an eye out for the video in the coming weeks :)
good vid bro!
its so nice to see people still making contents about this classic masterpiece
