Hey Gravity! This was an excellent watch, great editing, great script, just greatness overall! I also really appreciate the shoutout, I didn't expect it, but it was a nice gesture :) I sometimes had problems with my own production about not getting too much into non sound related aspects about this game, as there is a lot to talk about when it comes to the Mirror's Edge games. I think the most impressive thing which you touched on a bit in this video too, is the linear level design. Many say they prefer an open world for a parkour game, but they don't think about the fact that open worlds aren't as intricately designed as more focussed maps. Mirror's Edge is replayable due to the excellent level design, not in spite of it. And the fact that to this day no game really came close to the Mirror's Edge experience (in my opinion not even the second game came close) speaks volumes as to how much every piece of the puzzle contributed to this experience. Sounds, visuals and gameplay all contributed to a great symbiosis, a game like Mirror's Edge will likely never come to fruition again!
Your video deserves way more views then it got, I hope this contributes a bit to that :) I agree, if they ever do a Mirror's Edge 3 I hope they go back to linear/semi-linear level design. It's like a race track where you want to be as effecient and fast as possible, if you go open world you lose some of that. Thanks for the comment
Mirror's Edge graphics, music and art style was just way ahead of it's time. It was so unique and beautiful. The minimalist design language was and is still just gorgeous.

Loved this video, I'm just regurgitating many of the comments here but this game was incredible and really resonated with me in terms of the visual style and the music, part of me wishes I could go back and experience it for the first time all over again. I did sometimes struggle with the first-person platforming, especially on my first play-through, but I think having it in third-person just wouldn't have hit the same levels of immersion. this game is SPECIAL! i guess we never see game like that in our Universe my all time favorite i was 14 yo when this masterpiece was released and i was wordless and shocked of music, design, graphics and gameplay
There are so many awesome and unique games between 2000 and 2010, there wasn't as much of a AAA 'formula' yet. Not that modern games aren't great, but i feel they are less inspired than what came before. Except in the indie scene, they do some great stuff! Thanks for the complement, I appreciate it :)
This was one of the most underrated games of the 7th Gen. The story might've been a bit underdeveloped, but it was still nice. The real highlights of this game were the stunning visuals, which still hold today, and the super immersive gameplay. Those are what made this game such a show stopper. The only let down is its short length, but even so, it's a shame that we never got a sequel
I remember finally having a PC that could run the game and I was so happy. I still had to play it on a low resolution but I loved every bit of it, especially the gameplay. Unpopular opinion, but I actually love Catalyst as well, and got all the achievements for that game. Especially just running around on the roofs looking for collectibles was my favourite part. The atmosphere was unlike anything I had ever seen before in a game.
@@GameTalesHQ If you play not only the story but also try to discover everything like I did, I'm sure you'll have a blast! I'd ignore the negative reviews. I play a ton of games and this was one of the most fun and beautiful experiences.
This is a game I still go back to once in a while, you can really feel that this game has a "soul" Which I cannot say of Catalyst, that game really just feels like a corporate boardroom set out the design and then developers were "assigned" to the project Don't get me wrong, Catalyst is better than the original in many objective ways like polish, animations, voice acting, etc., but the sums of it's parts just don't add up as well as the original did For me nothing exemplifies this more than the main theme song, "Still Alive" is a song that is just timeless to me and will still be considered a great piece of art in decades to come The main theme song of Catalyst in comparison feels almost generic
Thanks mate! The AAA sector is very stale at the moment, but i'm seeing some great games coming from the AA sector tho. A Plague Tale Requiem, Hades, Sifu, Stray, Life is Strange. All solid stuff!
Mirrors edge expects you to improve, for example in kates level the scaffolding can be confusing another example is in the shards level, in the control room level you have to make the guards shoot the servers while also dodging bullets even in the boats level, the chase is a bit more challenging unlike jacknifes. Thats what i like about the game.
To this day I still love this game, and I come back to it from time to time. I remember being absolutely hyped when they announced Catalyst. And then being disappointed when I realized they wouldn't be expanding on the original story but rebooting the whole thing, and Still Alive was no longer part of the soundtrack. lol
@@HisuiOgawa I get why they did it. The story in ME1 wasn't very wel recieved so it makes sense to reboot. But yeah, the story of ME1 is so light that you could do almost anything with it, so it's sad to see they went that route. Loved the lore and universe the first game set up.
@@GameTalesHQ I was so hoping they would flesh out the story of the first game that I even forgot about that. lol Besides it ended up with both sisters on the run, it could have been used in a sequel to add a multi-player options if Faith had taught a few things to her sister in-between games.
@@HisuiOgawa That could be cool, they'd have to do a time jump though if you want Kate to be as good a runner as Faith. Running in co-op would be great fun!
One of the "replay all of it once in a while" games. Where "once in a while" is likely at least three times a year. I did a tribute video some years ago, it's still my profile video. ^^
There won't ever be another game like this one. Art and gameplay work together to create something beautifully unique. I also love how it's kind of an arcade game - there are simple rules/mechanics that together stack on top of each other and result in something quite complex, but still understandable and intuitive enough for you to easily master. Thanks to the visuals the game looks great even today, and the music... Oh boy, the music. If The Shard and Still Alive were written for movies, those bitches would get an Oscar. the story's kinda whack, but as an excuse to move forward, it's enough (another quality of an arcade game)
I agree with you on all points. The story is sadly so much wasted potential, could've been great! Oh well, we still got one of the most unique games of that decade :)
_"The most memorable parts are its timeless art style and beautifully futuristic soundscape..."_ No, I have to disagree with you here. The most memorable part was my first virtual plunge to death! I misjudged a jump and fell about 20 stories down, getting killed instantly. I vividly remember that virtual fall and shouting out loud, throwing off my headphones and expelling a powerful expletive very loudly. I had to stop playing for a moment. The game had been so immersive that my body _physilcally_ reacted: my hands were shaking and I broke out a sweat. It was as if my hind brain thought the fall was real. After that, I died in-game many more times from falling, but I never experienced that kind of visceral physical bodily response before or since, in this game or in any other for that matter. *THAT PLUNGE* is what is most memorable to me. It was an incredible game, and yet I have never replayed it. I guess I want to keep the memories limited to that first extraordinary playthrough.
Ahh i forgot to cover the death plunge. The sound design on that is amazing! It's almost nightmarish, it creates anxiety. That combined with the sound of your body hitting the ground is horrifying! Especially when you haven't heard it before. I didn't have that strong of a reaction when i played it years ago, but i can see why it had that effect on you. The game aged very well in my opinion, I don't think another playtrough will taint your memories of the game. But that's up to you! Thanks for watching and the comment :)
I still think that DICE/EA should remaster this entire game with next gen graphics to bring people back to the Mirror's Edge everybody loves while also introducing new players to the game. After that they could make an official sequel to this game and bring the franchise back to life, all the story/lore already exists. This game is just too good for them to abandon, all the have to do is take their time and execute it properly.
That would be awesome. But they'd have to build it from the ground up since the lighting is 'baked' onto the textures. Would be amazing to bring this game to modern audiences though!
@@GameTalesHQ that’s a good point I actually didn’t know that, it would definitely be worth it in the long run though, even though EA isn’t really known for taking their time with games anymore. But who knows, maybe someday
This title is so wrong: "A Flawed Masterpiece", the game is perfect, it's not flawed. I wonder where the first song version type at 1:06 , it's so different from the original!
Well, I don't think any game is perfect. Mirror's Edge does some things amazingly well and other things less so. But at the end of the day it's just my opinion! It's definitely a special game that's for sure :) The song's name is: 'Solar Fields - E3 Theme', they used it in the original E3 trailer. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I cant believe i would see people get nostalgic over this game.. I played it and beat it, but i had already had a great gaming journey by then so the impact wasn't everlasting as it was for some of you.. Getting old sneaks up on you.. Fast.
Nostalgia can kick in fast though! A game doesn't have to be a decade old to get nostalgic about it. If i hear The Witcher 3's music I'm right back in Novigrad! But yeah, getting older does sneak up on you.
then came the catalyst but the dying light 2 was the one to show how to do open world running correctly i wish there was some sort of follow up for the me 2008
The original feels clunky an slow after Catalyst's smooth moevement and combat, however the story sucks and the city even if extremely beautiful makes no sense and doesn't keep the charm the original game had
If you kept reading fairy tales, you would get sick of them, sometimes its the memory of the memory thats important. Mirrors edge was ahead of its time, the secound mirrors edge was not. Maybe we should let some ideas die, regardless of how impactful or amazing they are. I would love to see annother mirrors edge, but it would just be, breath of the wild dribble, so disconnected and detatched from what made it what it was, but with an audience that farther disconnects me. This was at a time where mechanics were everything, where physics were the dream everyone dreamed up. We went from Half Life 2, to this. That was the giant leep, im positive that gaming is dead, but my memory of the giant leep is alive as its ever been. Have a good day everyone, revisit your newvegas or dragon age origins. It just doesnt hit the same.
I agree that sometimes it's better to keep your nostalgia intact by not replaying your favorite games. I don't think it's the case for Mirror's Edge though. I enjoyed it just as much as i did back in 2010! I'm not sure why I get sick of some games and not of others. Dragon age Origins still SLAPS though ;) Edit: Maybe it's the time in between. If it's been only a couple of years I could see a game get boring, but if it's been a decade maybe less so?
I'm not a big fan of unbelievable female protagonists in games, but there is something straight up bad @** about the minimalism in the design and personality of Faith. A small, agile, hard-to-catch freerunner as a female protagonist seems far more believable than the roided tacitly superhuman female protagonist of the recent crop of games.

Such a unique experience. Sadly we only see sequels nowadays and very little fresh IP's like Mirror's Edge.
Well crafted video!!! As for Mirror's Edge, games are rarely that good these days, makes you appreciate what came before.
@@GameTalesHQSorry for the late reply. No worries, and yep some of Indie games are some of the best out there .
Your videos are completely on par with bigger channels that I've seen.
Glad you think so! That means alot
Yessir! Agreed on all points, thanks for watching
Hahah especially those PhysX parts, my pc would drop down to 10 fps.
I have yet to play Catalyst, but it looks beautiful from what i've seen from it!
@@GameTalesHQ If you play not only the story but also try to discover everything like I did, I'm sure you'll have a blast! I'd ignore the negative reviews. I play a ton of games and this was one of the most fun and beautiful experiences.
@@Nibgames I will give it a shot sometime!
Great video! loving the quality editing!
Thanks! I appreciate that!
This is a game I still go back to once in a while, you can really feel that this game has a "soul"
Which I cannot say of Catalyst, that game really just feels like a corporate boardroom set out the design and then developers were "assigned" to the project
Don't get me wrong, Catalyst is better than the original in many objective ways like polish, animations, voice acting, etc., but the sums of it's parts just don't add up as well as the original did
For me nothing exemplifies this more than the main theme song,
"Still Alive" is a song that is just timeless to me and will still be considered a great piece of art in decades to come
The main theme song of Catalyst in comparison feels almost generic
I fell in love with Mirror's Edge at first sight. Truly a special game. Shame they messed up the sequel.
Great Video to watch! So sad that games like OG Mirrors Edge can't happen nowadays, especially in AAA sector
Thanks mate! The AAA sector is very stale at the moment, but i'm seeing some great games coming from the AA sector tho. A Plague Tale Requiem, Hades, Sifu, Stray, Life is Strange. All solid stuff!
You even used the side action speed boosting technique.
Welcome to the top percentile of Mirror's Edge enjoyers!
You are the first to mention it! 🤝🏼😎
Such a fun game to master. Loved cleaning up my runs after my first playtrough!
this game will forever have a special place in my heart. great video!
edit: im just gonna assume you're dutch because of your accent ;)
Thank you :)
Hahah it's that obvious huh 😝
Goeie review, ik hoorde gelijk dat je uit Nederland komt :)
Thanks! Klopt inderdaad haha
To this day I still love this game, and I come back to it from time to time.
I remember being absolutely hyped when they announced Catalyst. And then being disappointed when I realized they wouldn't be expanding on the original story but rebooting the whole thing, and Still Alive was no longer part of the soundtrack. lol
I had the exact same reaction back then!
@@GameTalesHQ I mean, that was almost cruel of them to announce a second Mirror's Edge game when it was in fact a reboot.
@@HisuiOgawa I get why they did it. The story in ME1 wasn't very wel recieved so it makes sense to reboot. But yeah, the story of ME1 is so light that you could do almost anything with it, so it's sad to see they went that route. Loved the lore and universe the first game set up.
@@GameTalesHQ I was so hoping they would flesh out the story of the first game that I even forgot about that. lol
Besides it ended up with both sisters on the run, it could have been used in a sequel to add a multi-player options if Faith had taught a few things to her sister in-between games.
@@HisuiOgawa That could be cool, they'd have to do a time jump though if you want Kate to be as good a runner as Faith. Running in co-op would be great fun!
Back when Dice still had soul.
Back when EA wasn't as greedy yet and when Dice made amazing games...
Nice job, I'll have to keep an eye on your channel
I appreciate that!
One of the "replay all of it once in a while" games.
Where "once in a while" is likely at least three times a year.
I did a tribute video some years ago, it's still my profile video. ^^
'Some years ago', it's been 8 years haha! Just checked it out, fun video :)
@@GameTalesHQ thanks! 😄
really good job, mate. keep it up!
Thanks bro 👊🏼
There won't ever be another game like this one. Art and gameplay work together to create something beautifully unique. I also love how it's kind of an arcade game - there are simple rules/mechanics that together stack on top of each other and result in something quite complex, but still understandable and intuitive enough for you to easily master. Thanks to the visuals the game looks great even today, and the music... Oh boy, the music. If The Shard and Still Alive were written for movies, those bitches would get an Oscar.
the story's kinda whack, but as an excuse to move forward, it's enough
(another quality of an arcade game)
I agree with you on all points. The story is sadly so much wasted potential, could've been great! Oh well, we still got one of the most unique games of that decade :)
_"The most memorable parts are its timeless art style and beautifully futuristic soundscape..."_
No, I have to disagree with you here.
Its about time to make Mirrors Edge in VR :)
Now that would be awesome 😎
Great video!
Great stuff! Catalyst vid next?
Maybe sometime, I haven't played Catalyst yet!
this game released exactly 1 day after my birth day...
Game was a cool tech demo that’s about it. They should’ve sold it or leveraged it to make another game
They did make a sequel: Catalyst, didn't play it though!
It sucks that Mirror's Edge Catalyst was a recap, AND after 6 years we never got a sequel to it 😢.
Mirrors edge os atemporal, i playing in 2022
5:15 pun intended :))
EA used to publish such innovative games. Feels like the decision making moved from the creators to a boardroom of shareholders. It’s a shame
2000s EA was unstoppable, it's sad to see where they've ended up..
Good video
Thanks 🙏🏼
mooi spul
it really was a flawed masterpiece in many of the best ways
then came the catalyst
but the dying light 2 was the one to show how to do open world running correctly
i wish there was some sort of follow up for the me 2008
Mirror's Edge 2008 was magic! Haven't played catalyst yet though, heard mixed things about it.
@@GameTalesHQ the running is fine but enemies are just annoying
You can't escape fights during missions
Map is just set of linear paths
@@GameTalesHQ basically you finish game once
Play it for 3 extra hours and you're done
That's why instead of me catalyst i recommend dying light 2
@@wydua Allright! Thanks for the reccomendation!
What abt catalyst
I have yet to play Catalyst!
@@GameTalesHQ It's really not as good as the original in my opinion. (just replayed the original, still adore it 13 years later)
The original feels clunky an slow after Catalyst's smooth moevement and combat, however the story sucks and the city even if extremely beautiful makes no sense and doesn't keep the charm the original game had
@@Mart-E12 Catalyst seems 'floaty' from the gameplay i've seen. But I won't judge 'till I've played it :)
the thing that made me hate this game is the pvp. this one boss kept slamming its head into mine and i couldn't even do anything about it
Yeah, the combat isn't explained very well. If you know what to look for at that bossfight it's easy but if you don't, it can be frustrating as hell!
Amazing game, but I couldn't play it for more than 30 minutes at a time, otherwise I'd get nauseous
woops looks like I took a wrong turn lol I thought sign was saying mirrors edge catalyst lol im out bye
Back to consulting with the elder gods i guess!
That was the giant leep, im positive that gaming is dead,
but my memory of the giant leep is alive as its ever been.
Dragon age Origins still SLAPS though ;)
Edit: Maybe it's the time in between. If it's been only a couple of years I could see a game get boring, but if it's been a decade maybe less so?
mirrors edge catalyst is way better
I'm not a big fan of unbelievable female protagonists in games, but there is something straight up bad @** about the minimalism in the design and personality of Faith. A small, agile, hard-to-catch freerunner as a female protagonist seems far more believable than the roided tacitly superhuman female protagonist of the recent crop of games.
Too political, disliked and unsubbed
lol
Music in this game..feels. feels of Freedom and Nostalgia. When high budgets videogames was more "free"
