Welcome to my channel where I show you all kinds of DIY projects. Come along to be inspired, perhaps pick up some tips & tricks or just be entertained! 😎
Many of my projects happens in my garage. It's a multi-purpose garage as it is my workshop and my TH-cam studio. Many of my projects are actually me improving my garage. It will also be a lot of motorcycle fixer-upper videos for a while, since I have several bikes lined up.

Adventure Motorcycle Facelift - Fixing the Elefant - Episode #12
I am taking care of the last important improvements that needs to be done before I can fully trust my motorcycle for going on a long trip. Front brakes is to be completely redone in this video. The front fender is redesugned and most of the front is getting a real makeover!
I am doing (at least) one thing wrong in this video: I am using two copper washers when putting on the valve for the brake hose onto the caliper, it happes at 18:30 in the video. I should not have done that, I made this community post showing how I fixed it:

My Cagiva 750 Elefant is almost ready to be used for a motorcycle adventure trip. Almost. Can I manage to get it done in a few days? By only doing the most critical fixes, and skip testing and quality control it might go. Risky? Well, there is just no time to make sure everything is OK, the trip itself will have to be the test, if I even can manage to get it done in time. This video is part of ...

Zinc Plating Problems - Fixing the Elefant - Episode #3

I am fixing my rare Cagiva 750 Elefant adventure motorcycle. Cagiva is a brand that no longer exists, finding parts to this bike is not easy. Because of this I decided to reuse the old rusted fasteners for the rear wheel and rear brakes, and the way to go for a DIY'er is to zinc plate the parts to add rust protection. The zinc plating did turn out OK, but it was not as easy as I hoped for. The ...

good idea most lifts have stupid size wheels and if like most of use we are limited to workshop space being easy to move the table out of the way is great , dont know about putting the lift up against a wall as my lift always has a bike on it , either for work or storage
I have been using it for a while now with the new bigger wheels, and it works great! Most of the time I have a bike on it as well, and now I can easily move it around even with the bike on! 👍
09:48 - Not sure I'd be using stainless bolts for my brake disc - do you know the strength of the bolts? Some stainless if pretty soft (weak)... Personally I get Pro-Bolt Ti bolts that are designed for the job :)
I think the bolts I am using are almost as 8.8 grade bolts, after some research I have found that I should have used 10.9 or 12.9 grade bolts, so I will get new ones. Thanks for the tips 🙏
Looking good! As the owner of a 13 year-old Ducati Monster, I'm a big fan of the old air-cooled Ducati/Cagiva v-twin motor. So it's great to see you keeping this classic model on the road.
Ducati Monster is just a legendary bike 🤩🤩🤩 Have to agree about the engine 😊
Nice :) looking good. Are you going for a restomod ? ( with the digital stuff )
Thanks 😊 I think maybe restomod is the right term. I have at least given up on the original plan to restore it as original. Too many of the original parts are missing, and difficult to source. I'll try to keep some of the old school look and charm, but modernize and improve it.
@@kihestad I see you point and because I am restoring a old Peugeot truck I can only stand on your side regarding impossible to find parts and restomod ^^ Again Thanks for the content, top quality here !
SPRING is long gone, and so probably Thomas for his ride aswell, so, it had to change to SUMMER 🤣
Exactly - very well obseved, I did not really think anyone would notice - but I could not keep it as it was any longer... 😝😅
Great video series. I would not trust those Cap nuts on the pinch clamp on the front axle. I would go with a nylock nut
@@waynettarin Thanks 🙏 I have added locktight to them, would think that is even better than nylock?
@kihestad if you on the road and need to take front wheel off are you going to carry Loctite? In this respect nylok is superior to me as its re-usable.
@@waynettarin that is very true, I have to admit it was nylock nuts on there when I got the bike - probably for a reason 😬 the downside is the possibility for the stud bolt to be damaged, scratched and starts to rust since it's pointing forward. Perhaps lock nuts with caps exist? An alternative could be a protective cap put over the nut. 🤔
The level of details in this video, and all your videos is just insane. I'm sitting clued to my chair and try to suck it all up and learn as much as possible. Really liked the new design of the front fender. Love that you take good care of this old classic, and I really can't wait for us to go on the trip. 👏🏻
Thanks bro🙏 It's getting close now, but I need some more days in the garage before I can hit the road 😬😬😬
The conversation with yourself was like watching my internal dialog lol. So well done.
Haha, when you're alone in the garage the only one to discuss with is yourself 😅
I didn't know about these design princeples, but I'm very happy that I do now. Thank you for sharing. I just purchased a 1976 CB550 Four Supersport that has already had some work done to it and I would like to change it. Luckily, I know exactly what to fix now! I love that motorcycle lift you have, did you buy this or make it?
Ahh, that's the exact same model and make I had as my first 'heavy' motorcycle 🤩 it's the one with 4-1 exhaust isn't it? That is a great looking bike! I bought the lift table, but I have modified it slightly. I have made a couple of videos about it...
Hang on... When did that intro start saying "Summer"? 😉 Looking good, but just be careful with that front disc, I saw you paint the mounting surfaces on the hub, so check it's still running true, those were machined faces. If you get a bit of judder, you might have to revisit and clean the paint off.
I thought nobody was going to notice that (switch from saying 'spring' to 'summer' in the intro), well done noticing it 😊 You're right, I better check if the paint has come on a bit thick and perhaps uneven where the brake disk is attached. I will switch to high tensile 10.9 or 12.9 grade bolts as well so will take a look! Again: well noticed !!!🙏
Loving the videos! I like the attention to detail, aiming for a high standard, ensuring you have a nice work space and proper tools. I wouldn't mind seeing another oddball motorcycle getting similar treatment in the future. Hopefully it is one another oldie, but goldie. Having said that, I wouldn't mind if it was something else too. Keep it up! :)
Thanks! 🙏 I have currently total four motorcycles, the others are a bit older than my Cagiva. It's a lot more to come! I'll continue my Honda CB400 cafe racer build as soon as I am satisfied with the Elefant, and after that perhaps a very extreme custom bike build based of another 80s bike 😬
Think those “wrong” new pads were the ones for the rear. FA134 are the ones for the front of my early Aprilia which looks like it shares the caliper with the rear of your bike. Over the years, on bikes I have had 3 rubber brake lines fail. All 3 were the original rubber lines on Cagivas!
I think you are right, seems like I have messed up my order there. Well then I have a spare set 😁 I think this rubber hose I replaced was the last one to be replaced on my bike as well. I can see the hose for the clutch and rear brake are both steel braded lines. Well, they probably did not know any better back in the 90s 😅
Hi. Using stainless steel bolts in aluminum structures can be problematic due to a phenomenon known as galvanic corrosion. Galvanic Corrosio occurs when two different metals are in electrical contact in the presence of an electrolyte (e.g., water, especially saltwater). The more anodic metal (aluminum in this case) corrodes faster than it would alone, while the more cathodic metal (stainless steel) corrodes slower. This then make the aluminium to corrode quite hard and you can loose structural strenght in the threads. Howewer by sealing the threads with Loctite that should help alot. Thanks for a great video. Greetings from Norway
Yes, I know about this danger, I would think using lock tight at least helps a bit, but I guess I should try to find zinc plated bolts instead. Doing s bit of research tells me that stainless steel bolts might not be strong enogh eiter, recommended to use 12.9 grade steel 😬
I don't know how much of a coating Loctite gives the SS screw, but you should replace the washer closest to the aluminium with a plastic one to avoid galling on the outside. And you might have to drill those screws out when it's time to replace the disc.
That was a smart tips, but I'll probably replace them with zinc plated learning I should have higher strength bolts as well.
Nice work, interesting new format, voice over is nice, but it's less alive than your comments while you work. You can imrove brake bleeding by just redirecting the bleed hose back to the master cylinder reservoir and just hand pump to move bubbles, then pressure bleed it.
I though perhaps it would speed up the process working in the garage not having to think of what to say, and just add voiceover later. It was also some kind of experiment, fun to try different things. Hovewer the time saved in the garage was less than time spent adding voiceover later, so I dont' think it will be just this experiment 🫤😝I know about the method you suggest, it's smart if it takes forever to get rid of bubbles in the system, I hovever could not get pressure at all, I coud barely get fluid into my bottle. As soon as I got pressure I quicly got rid of the bubbles.
@@kihestad Give a suck with a vacuum cleaner to prime the hose then ,or even a some plastic medical seringe thay you can get at the pharmacy,it's what i do to empty the reservoir before filling it up with new fluid. I even use engine vacuum to bleed brakes lol
I think the problem with stainless steel and aluminum is electrolysis. I have had to drill out stainless screws. It doesn’t go well. I was just going into 6061 T6 aluminum and 18-8 stainless bolts.
Yes, I know about this danger. Not sure if having plenty of lock tight helps enough. I better try to find the "correct" type... It's just very convenient to use stainless, steel - easy to get, not that expensive and the best - they do not rust 😅
The Elefant is looking better and better. Your mudguard job is superb. But I’m not sure about the stainless bolts in the disc. Proper steel ones would be stronger, and we don’t want you sheering off the bolts under hard braking, do we? That would probably bring a swift end to some great M/C videos. I am looking forward to seeing you out with your friend and upholding the honour of old bikes versus new ones. Les in UK 🇬🇧
Thanks 😊 I thought stainless steel was pretty strong, but now that I check it's actually a bit weaker than 8.8 grade carbon steel bolts, and for disk brakes it's reccomended even stroger 12.9 grade bolts 😬 Will be replaced!
@@kihestad Good move, right choice! I’m reassured👍🤣. Les
I think you could have reduced the sound a bit further by wrapping the exterior in Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) insulation but its far from a cheap product. What did you use to power the PC fan given its a very low power requirement?
I have never heard of MLV, have to Google it now 😝 I had a 5V / 1Amp power adapter that worked fine for the fan
Reminds me of a transmission line subwoofer encloosure. haha
I have bult a couple of subwoofers as well, it's quite similar - but works oposit 😬🫤😝😅
I'm considering the FDQ model - with the powered cross-slide feed. What is Your experience - is that something You would have considered buying, based on Your experiense with the manual cross-slide feeding? Approximately 24.000 NOK more expensive today(yes, I'm in Norway too), but perhaps would leave a better finish, facing large diameter? Beautiful coastal scenery, by the way! 😍🛳🌝
When it comes to lathes: the bigger the better 😊 If you have the space for it and you can afford it, you will not regret it! I have actually not tried the feeding yet, just manual so far. Not sure how often a powered cross-slide feed will come handy, it probably depends on you use case. I am pretty sure a bigger and heavier machine is useful though, when turning tool steel or other hard metals the smallest ones can struggle a bit.
So beautiful. I have a old Bashan Explode 250, the engine is still running strong. Is it possible to build a Cafe Racer from a old dirtbike?
@@SerweeFitness perhaps it's even better to restore it? Sounds like a rare bike...
@@SerweeFitness ahh, ok - googled the bike.. it's probably ok to customize it 😁
New indicators look good, and it was really interesting to see the process. Trial error and iteration, gives us hope for our projects
Glad to hear that 😊
You make a great ad for 3D printers!
I use my 3D printer quite frequently, it’s a very useful tool.
CLEAN i think is best way to compliment your bike .... as for tank placement , different or not , it works ! Very nice swoop with the elevated rear portion of tank ... cant wait to see where you hide the charging / electronic system
@@monokheros5373 Thanks 🙏 I have planned to make my own very slim litium battery to keep under the seat, hopefully I am able to put all the wiring and electrical components very flat an hidden under the seat or the tank 🤞 time will show 😬😁
Here is my 2 cents : I bought CNC machine 3018 and it sound like jet engine . I made 3/4 plywood box from 5 sides ( the 6th side is the carpet on the floor ) and I used what is called Chip Foam of a thickness of one inch ( 2.5 cm )and installed it from the inside of the box , I checked it with an alarm clock and out of box the noise of the alarm clock was 74 dB and inside the box the noise was astonishing 47 dB . But note : box are all closed except small hole for wires and I used sound meter almost the same one you used and the last thing is the box by itself has small effect on the noise reduction . Keep up the good work .
It's a bit easier to sound proof if you don't need ventilation to get rid of the heat. Well done! 👍
Nice video once again
Thanks a lot 🙏😊
I think the stock led indicaters on my lexmoto venom would look good on your bike yes i know its a only a 125 chinese bike but thay seen to be realy good quality and iv never had any issues with them
Hey, that was a very cool bike 😊 I'll stick to square-ish blinkers on mine, because that's what it was originally. The ones on your bike does look a bit more modern very nice 👍
I believe this is a well-intentioned video, but if you follow these "principles" too rigidly they lead to very formulaic builds with little character. These "principles" are merely suggestions; you can break them and still have a beautiful, tasteful design. We remember the builds that have something unique about them, not the me-too builds.
Absolutely right, the author behind the design guide also says that this is not exact rules but just guidelines and it's up to each builder to make variations. You cannot look away from all design guidelines though, then it's no longer a cafe racer
It's great when someones been there before you, thanks for the vid. I'm about to do the same mod on a similar lift but I'm going for fixed wheels at the front and swivel at the rear which is the reverse of how the lift comes.
That is probably smart. Because of the limited space I have in my garage having four swivel wheels has been very helpful to 'park' the table into its right parking spot. It is a bit challenging to move around though, that will be much easier with your setup .
Do you have smaller fuel tank?
@@IGustiNgurahBagusAriHerm-xv4vc I'll just stick to the original for this one
@@kihestad oh, your video it Was original, I was Did to custom Culture. 😊
cool intro!
It's fun to try out stuff 😊
5:55 not at all. they have to design around the indicators that are by law required. the indicators are never the base or ground or reason for any design on any roadbike but to as low drag as the light emitter and design will allow for. if the makers had the choice they would either not be there or be integrated in the body for better looking design and less drag. thats the only reason. . .
It was probably a design choice back then, it just feels like a vulnerable one 🥴
You can look at the turn signal lamps for Honda NTV Revere and NX from 88-90 or 93-up... most of them are nearly square.
Yes, it seems like a bunch of motorcycles from 80s and 90s used these with different length arms: triumphs, aprilla, Honda ns125f and probably more 😅 Thanks for the tips 🙏
I have standard 12V 21W indicators on my bike, they look dull in daylight, and poorer still in bright sunlight does anyone know of a direct replacement brighter lamp?
21w should be pretty bright, perhaps the indicator switch, the wiring/connected or relay is old and worn? Might be the bulb is not really getting 12V. LED replacement bulbs might exist, depends on type of bulb you got
I have a 2016 harley xg750 street. Blacked out model. Ive been wanting to modify it into a cafe racer. Was my whole intent on the purchase. Anyone have any recommends or advice on this???????? Not alot of info out there and even less mechanics that know anything of value about doing this. Last shop I took it to they didn't even know what a cafe racer was and had no clue even about the model of bike I have. I had to walk back out the same door I entered......
Hehe, not knowing about cafe racers? Just stay away from that shop 😅 the author behind the guidelines actually made an article about making a cafe racer from a HD - check here: www.bikeexif.com/build-harley-cafe-racer
The clear bulky ones, a bit of a drop shape, looks like the ones for my cbr125 -08, i'd like them if you are giving them away.
It was actually for a cbr125 I bought them once 😊 I only have two... Still interested?
@@kihestad yeah, i need two actually :)
might be cheap blinkers, but with 3d printed adapters and new m12 bolts.... it is a far cry better than my shoelace and superglue fix on my number plate bracket... HA ha! (I need to learn how to weld!)
haha, well - you have stepped up from duct tape at least 😝
I would go if not the original with led bolts something closer to original at least
I have got a couple of suggestions about Ducati indocators from older type of Ducati Monster, they seems to be similar to the big originals for the Cagiva - but a tiny bit smaller. Would like to have some that is perhaps 80% shrinked down, and a bit shorter arm. Not easy to find 😝
@@kihestadreal nice job with the 3d prints lights look great i would go for the medium
Would be cool to stay on with main lights and flash when you need to turn
Great video, enjoyed watching it! I actually have one of those small fake carbon fiber indicators, it came on a crash damadged bike I am rebuilding. So I would be interested if you would send me the other 3 so I will have the whole set :)
Thait is just a crazy coincident 😲 I'll gladly send you the 3 I have, just send me an email to: ki@hestad.no
2:22 - they look like rear indicators from Ducati's 600/750/900SS range - might be worth a punt on finn or ebay?
Yes, you are the second ones saying Ducati has similar ones - will definetly take a look! Cagiva and Ducati had a lot of cross-over parts in the period when Cagiva owned Ducati, like in 1990 when my bike was made. Thanks for the tips!
Pretty good job! Only thing for me is the main horizontal bone line should be considered with the driver's weight. So the motorcycle alone should be a bit tail high head down, it is a typical sports/aggressive line and prevents the low tail/tilting back at driving cause of the driver's weight.
Thats an interesting thought. In a design process I guess it would be smart to not only design the bike based on a profile picture of the the motorcycle only, but also have a picture with the intended rider as well 🤔
Very neat job fitting in your own 3D design 'interfaces', that you almost casually introduced. And agreed on your blinker choice, obviously!
Thanks 😊 I have actually already got a very interesting tips: Ducati indicators from that era are actually quite similar to the ones I fitted - just better quality!
Actually, seeing your 3D printed solutions was very interesting.
It's a very handy tool. It can't be used to everything, but for making adapters like used in this video it works extremely well.
The first Ducati monster turn signals have a shape and style that would not only suit this retro bike, but they are the same era and share the same engine.
The monster indicators also have a better quality lens that is a true amber colour unlike these ones that are washed out by the bright globe. Maybe use an amber coloured gold as well?
I gotta investigate that! Thanks for the tips 🙏 I agree about the pale washed out color on the ones I fitted, everything is just bad with those 🥴😓
Like your videos and youtube presentations! Put an extra 3D printed part around the smallest part of the flexible. It is the weakest (moving) part. It will end more sturdy I suppose.
Yes, that is actually a very good idea 👍👍👍I had to take a look at my own video, and you're right. I think it will stiffen up the last soft "link" a lot - starting the 3D printer now!!!
I would like to have the Cagiva indicators for my 900ie
Lucky you, owning a 900ie - it's probably my dream classic adventure bike 🤩Just send me an email: ki@hestad.no
