And one final comment on the matter. How about tradies charging 100 an hour and answering mobile phone calls and doing social media on my time.
@@peterwilliam4681 well you are quite within your rights to raise it with said person and ask them to deduct the 1 minute phone call from your time the $1.66 by all means, as petty as it may sound they should make their calls on their lunch break. Do you pay the lunch break ? Or are they allowed a break at all ? When does your time start and stop do you expect them to work 8 hours without stopping for a break ? I’m saying this because being self employed I rarely take a break during work time. And for that reason I dont offer hourly charge, I would give you a set price for the works because on hourly pay the client thinks they own you, and you work directly for them yet they don’t pay you a lunch break like the law demands an employer should so take those minutes spent on the phone and deduct them from the legal 2 x 10 minute breaks in a day 👍🏻 have they spent 20 minutes on the phone I doubt it, if they have then complain, a professional would apologise and adjust the bill to deduct the $30.
U forgot to mention the 6.5 years warranty on work that you provide as a licensed tradesman
@@joshpowell9331 I know that’s a damn long time imagine trying to argue faulty materials with a supplier 5 years after install there’s not a chance your winning that argument you would have to take it on the chin
I had a deck refurb job quoted at $5,700 in August. I agreed to it. He couldn't do it till end of November which I said was fine. Job is finished, I received an invoice for $7,450 as he said there was a few small things that had to be done which were unforeseen. There was no communicaiton on additional costs. I have paid the $5,700 and want to pay extra obviously but that additional extra is almost an additional 40% labour charge minus the materials. These additional things that needed to be done maybe took a total of 5/6 hours, 2 of those jobs were were a one man job. I was billed at $225 for two people working extra hours which is why it cost almost $2K more. I just feel this isn't fair without any heads up. He is now saying the $5,700 was a estimate even though he responded 'Your deck will cost $5,700' when i asked for a 'quote'. Am I being an ass or am I in my right to push back a little?
A ute and a toolbox is not the same overheads as a business premises. All businesses have overheads.$100 is a way too expensive for a carpenter.$60 an hour is about right.
I was getting charged out at $55per hour as an apprentice heritage carpenter 12 yrs ago mate. Id say 80 to 100 is about right these days. You get 45 to 70 as a subbie. There is a shortage of skilled workers, and danger pay has to be considered nearly every tool you use has the potential to mame or kill you.its a dangerous job.
yeah right mate lol what do you do for work if you don't mind me asking?
@@peterwilliam4681 so how do you run a business if a carpenter gets paid $60 ? Where is the business profit ? No point in running a business if you can’t afford to pay staff and take a wage for yourself plus pay business costs. But you are right a ute and toolbox isnt the same as overheads, a shop might cost you $2000 per month a ute only $600 but the ute uses fuel at $150-200 per week, plus rego, new tyres, servicing, repairs none of which a business premises had to pay that’s the landlords responsibility. Why does anyone need overheads, they can work from home ? A carpenter can’t. Break a $1000 table saw and who pays for a new one ? We have to work for 2 days to buy a tool just so we can work does that sound fair ? If you break a pen do you have to work for 2 days to replace it ? Your ideology is way off you have no idea what it costs to be self employed, your rate is what you get fully employed, without builders you would have no home, no business premises, no hospitals, we build the world people live in and you think we should get paid low wages.? Aldi pays more than $60 to its managers and trust me being self employed is harder than running an Aldi store
A carpenter does work from home. His Ute and tools are his mobile office. Most are Sole traders.

I’ve been living here for 35 years, and also work in the building trade, i have a small 3 man property maintenance business in Strathpine , I retire next year, your posted videos are obviously aimed at an English audience, as you seem to have something Negative and condescending to say in each one of your posts about Australia, and the poor Australian plumbing, to the poorly laid Australian concrete. To the bad drainage and bad plumber who fitted the toilet seat , when it could have been the tennant, or the owner who fitted it. The Shower elevated platform you spoke about is elevated for a reason, that particular house was built in 1970’s, rather than research why the platform is so high of the ground, you go straight to the negative, and blame Australian workmanship . For every someone’s poor work contribution, there would be an equal bad example in the UK. You’re condescending, and whinging about your new country. If you don’t know who did it then don’t blame the nation. Try and integrate and dont denigrate .
@@Winw146 sorry but if you don’t call out poor workmanship and poor construction methods they continue to happen, don’t integrate - elevate ! Aussie homes builds are rubbish.
What about oneflare mate?
Haven’t heard of that one, Facebook local groups seem to be the best, unless you have a big budget for advertising I think concentrating on free advertising is the best option to keep you busy then when you are booked up and don’t need to be so active you can use Facebook ads etc to pull in bits of work, word of mouth is also massive
I’m an expat Living here. Tradies are very well off here Aussies rarely dispute pricing as every other bloke will charge more than the other one. Australia is a tradie paradise. Good Coin and earning potential. If you’re a customer I think you get ripped off but that’s a capitalist system in itself. To live here you need to be on $150,000 a year minimum as everything is so expensive
@@sapiens7821 I wouldnt say you get ripped off as such it depends how you look at it, you renovate your kitchen it costs $30k but adds $50k value to your home ripped off or investment you make $20k ? Now you take the same $50k and buy a small boat, after a year it’s worth $30k you lost $20k You use the kitchen daily and the boat rarely so which is the better investment. That’s how building work should be looked at. Unfortunately trades have been undervalued for years people see them as a service like delivering a pizza instead of highly skilled workers, we spend tons on tools and vans work outside in all conditions, so it’s nice to see trades being paid well instead of people working on computers in air conditioned offices drinking coffee getting all the cream, trades enable everyone else to work and without them the world would collapse sadly the uk imported too many third world slaves to work for peanuts and ruined the building industry I keep track and people are getting good rates but they should be on £300-400 a day if we matched inflation that’s what people get here so hard work does pay off. Thanks for commenting and watching it’s nice to hear a different perspective 👍🏻
Too much. Every carpenter/chippy in my street has 2 brand new Landcruisers, a boat and mansion. Literally screw nails into wood… And 99% of the time, you will never get a call back for a quote and if you do get through to someone, they won’t turn up. I’ve started doing the work myself. I’m an office worker. It’s easy. Aquire a few tools, get into it!!!
@@thomjanson9644 😂 just like that, the thing you don’t see is we are also office workers we do your job and then have to go and build. The difference is we need the vehicle to carry tools and materials we can’t jump in a bus to work, it’s also classed as a work vehicle so perk of the job, don’t be jealous about that it’s a tax deduction, we also know what we are doing and guarantee our work, in QLD it’s upto 7 years, your diy might kill someone, also you dont get the call back because more than likely you come across as you want everything for free, we know the customers and can sense it a mile away, dreamers, as soon as you mention it’s easy or your budget is small we know you want the job for nothing, so it’s easier to not quote than to spend hours composing a quote to have you say too much and we get paid $0 for 5 hours of office work you have your tools so good luck 🤞🏻 Ps I think office workers just sit on their arse all day drinking coffee I think they should get $10 per hour 😂

That 'Specializing' started about 25 years ago, maybe more. I've talked to builders that were complaining that the young guys were just wanting to do frames or roofs and nothing else. They are selling themselves short as they are not increasing their skills. I started as a painter but picked up tiling, carpentry and gyprock along the way. Main reason that happened was the other trades were always saying, "Leave it, the painter will fix it." They knew we wouldn't paint something if it wasn't finished. Overall though I learned NOT to work for builders. Most of them are pricks and are slippery trying to get money out of. Not to mention coming and doing extra work on top of your new paint. Ha, Ha. Now, I'm semi-retired and I just do smaller jobs for private customers.
@@bossdog1480 If you get in with a builder and work consistently then you build trust but I wouldn’t jump from builder to builder that’s asking for trouble, but like you I prefer to work for myself because it’s hard to find good trades, iv had a few do bad work for me and they look at you like your insane if you say their work is shit 😅
Great video. Very informative. All the best
I hope your work ethic and quality are up to snuff mate.As I’m a firm believer that no one does as good a job as you will for yourself. From what I’ve seen there’s some poor workmanship and materials being used in all trades.Theres a few rare gems out there too it’s just a matter of finding them.
@@Hahehhwgajshah72726.. The only reason poor materials and jobs are done poorly is because people don’t charge enough, when people start listening to clients saying just do the basic that’s what you get, if you take advice offa customer how to do a job it’s always going to be wrong. On the other hand I have seen some rough as guts work over here and Australian standards don’t help the building quality is 20 years behind the uk in materials and actual methods, we don’t even use double glazing that has been around for nearly 30 years. The Australian building Industry needs overhauling and needs to start importing better building methods and materials they cling to Aussie made but have zero innovation, eg windows are fitted with pins no expanding foam to seal air gaps, I have taken 3 steps back in quality to conform to Australian standards and I can’t go back to British standards because I can’t find the materials 😅 I complained to a colleague about how I couldn’t do a job because it was so poor when I first got here and he said “ your not in Kansas now Dorothy” that’s how things are done here, if I say a job is shit to an Aussie they say “ don’t like it go home” so that ideology needs to change before Australian standards can improve 👍🏻 Don’t take this as bashing Australia, it’s just the uk gets good innovation from Germany and the likes, over here we don’t see what is available to the rest of the world and continue to use outdated materials and products
With an ABN you are a self employed contractor, keep in mind you have to do invoicing, all the bookkeeping associated, big accounting bills for tax returns, PAYG, or monthly / quarterly BAS / GST submissions, no sick days, no public holiday pay, no holiday pay, no superannuation, you need to charge a lot more.

I'm not a carpenter but I ran my own business to many years and I take 40 dollars an hour as an employee over 70 dollars as a sole trader any day of the week. You take GST out of it you have, no extra for over time, no work cover and no super. You'd have to have your own income protection. And I made a claim against my own income protection very difficult to get your money and it's shit. Cheers Graham
Interesting video, shows the kind of pay grade you guys are getting. I recently started as a general hand north of bris for a builder/carpenter working with his apprentice and another bloke doing his by RPL. My wages at the end of the week are way less than when I was a forkie and bought my house and I'm a lot more tired after work, but construction is way more fulfilling and interesting plus I actually get to use my ~ 20 m18 tools I've amassed since buying the house. It's also been interesting seeing the difference between commercial and residential (did a year and a half under a commercial builder that mainly did concrete repairs), he charged like a wounded bull sometimes we were driving around in 50k plus of truck with 30k of equipment as standard plus whatever extra we needed (he had multiple 12 kvA gens and a dingo) for our jobs as laborers, I also saw some quotes from other companies in some of the city sites and they were quoting over 5k per bollard install. In this job the plasterers were shocked at how "low" my income was saying their 18 year old son gets $45 an hour to clean with a broom. I also met a qualified chippie working in an office on this job that said he'd expect $30 per hour working under someone else (as a chippie) but is earning $60 per hour in the cushie office job in aircon without wearing out his back. I've also seen australian posters on youtube saying labourers work for a minimum of $45 per hour but I'm not seeing the jobs that pay that back when I was looking.
@@danielp3345 Rates are crazy I just said to someone on another comment it’s just work for whatever your happy with, if someone has a massive office they have to pay for they will have to charge more but they go for bigger company’s that ignore the small guys because they assume bigger is better, it’s a crazy world but if you are willing to put in the hard work you can achieve anything, your also never too old to retrain and upskill. Good luck with whatever you want to do if you can get into carpentry it may take a few years but it would be worth it in the long run 👍🏻

Can this same method be used patching a hole in a wall? Cheers
@@jasonclark950 yes this is the standard method of patching holes, if it is a small hole you can buy metal wall patches with lots of holes in that stick to the wall and you plaster over them but generally everyone uses this method, Quick tip to get a good tight patch, cut a piece of plasterboard slightly bigger than the hole in the wallet put the patch over the wall, draw around it and cut the excess out of the wall, this removes any busted board and gives a tight fit 👍🏻 also use fibre tape not scrim tape the fibre tape lays a lot flatter and the plaster bonds into it where scrim tape you can have bits of it sticking out if you sand too deep

Come to my country by all means, but just don't bring your crappy Labour politics with you. It is what ruined your country.
No idea what you are talking about mate. You have gone from everyone wants cash and scams the ATO to now politics. Someone has upset you but it was nothing to do with me giving advice on carpenters salary’s.
and they all want cash and the tax dept is all over them. The ato ( australian tax organisation ) has access to ALL your financial records. Earnt $50K last year but paying $500 a week rent, ( we see every cent spent on your credit card ), and driving a $80K ute. BUSTED. And in a giant world of hurt. Then too local councils will want inspection reports from building owners for most work done to comply with building regulation laws and all builders must have an ABN and qualifiations recognised here.
@@smilingjack7622If you charge the right prices you don’t need to do cash jobs, register for gst and claim for everything legally, it’s the people not earning enough that want cash to boost wages. As for inspection reports no idea what you mean by that, but if work is over $3300 in qld you report it to the QBCC and insure the works with warranty. Sounds like you are a little disgruntled if you pay the right prices you get the good trades. ABN is a standard practice as with registering your business name it’s easy and free, also qualifications are recognised you just need to get recognition of prior learning and transfer them to an Australian Qualification, I transferred mine and now I have 8 different trade licences soon to be 9. Money is easy to make here there’s no reason to try and scam the system
🇦🇺😎👍Years ago I agreed to do work on a particular price which the builder decided. After the work was completed and the work inspected the builder was preparing to pay us ( my carpentry partner and I ) he said we did the work in record time and he didn’t think we should get double the money of a standard hourly rate. ( In other words we were on contract rates ). After a lengthy discussion he told us to except the lesser wage otherwise he would call the police and tell them he was being threatened by our presence. . This is common in Australia. Also some of the builders tell you they did there ass and they couldn’t afford the agreed amount.( hourly rate ) If you couldn’t except their offer you would have to take them to court. ( more money you haven’t got)( just cut your losses ). All they have to do is tell the police and say they feel threatened and the police will cancel your gun licence and take you firearms . Unsuitable person… What I find is I’m better off on wages , working for a big company under union control ( CFMEU ) and you not only get a reasonable wage but all you benefits… Brisbane QLD
I have heard a few horror stories of people not being paid by builders, I try not to work for them and try to get my own work preferably from businesses, it’s a minefield there’s always a scum bag that will abuse your trust. Never heard of that happening. Make sure you got it in writting, or hourly rate. Work for builders who are going through the banks. Banks control the payments and builder will want as much as possible as the working on percentage.
@ iv heard a few tales off people apparently a local guy took over his dads company took loads of deposits cocked up loads of jobs and went under didn’t pay anyone, it happens, what would be good was if QBCC actually did stuff that worked like an escrow service where they charge a small fee and check completion stages and release money that the client has put into the escrow there doesn’t seem to be anything like it across the globe look at the big home builders going bust taking deposits they should t even have the money

@@neilgillespie7435 nope I don’t rely on others to find me work, how do you think a company pays you $70 on ABN do you think they charge $75 ? They are charging $120-150, ask yourself this are you worth more than a plumber that squashes plastic pipe together ? Because they charge $125ph
Of Rand businesses and I'm telling you if he's charging 100 bucks an hour after everything's got to pay out there's not much left
Says Neil who's never done a day on the tools in his life and never will
Well you would be wrong Built fences built kitchens Worked on cars found trades lie their guts out do not provide value for money and love cash
Plenty tool here and l know how to use them you live in fairy land
Piss off and go back to pommie land
Good info
$100 hr it highway robbery for the work they do they are slow and the workmanship is crap he in Australia
@@ronnie8991 😂 I’m expensive because I am fast and highly skilled I have 8 licences soon to be 9 I do the job of 8 different Australian trades 😎
@ Thank you 🙏🏻
@zeitgeistprepper1967 really ? A warehouse worker at Aldi gets $37.82 yet you expect someone to train for 4 years, spend $6k on a set of tools, pay $100 per month for insurance , then buy a work vehicle for an extra $60 ? That doesn’t include time spent quoting where you don’t get paid or time spent on admin or even advertising costs. Really ?
@@ProBuildCarpenterexactly , no paid leave, sick days etc Only a person who has never worked a day as a tradie would say crap like that.
I charge $100 an hour as a videographer. Not including editing after. I’m not even qualified. Just TH-cam everything.
Kiwis can just walk into Oz, no work visa or anything required, though it wasnt so long ago the ten pound poms could do the same and get paid for it, ah the things they did/do to keep the joint as white-anglo and loyal (to the UK) as possible, was a shame when populate or perish post WW2 came along, they had to resort to letting in non anglos...desperate times..albeit in miniscule numbers compared with poms...oi oi oi, all that and the british had zero legitimacy, just like the rest of the empire, invading and occupying the joint in the first place let alone the $Trillions that has been plundered in resources...and we still haven't even got our own national symbols such as flag, head of state even national and memorial days, what a joke and its all courtesy of being a dumping ground for loyal poms over the last +200 years.
Queensland seemed like quite a tight job market to me and house prices and rentals through the roof. Highly reccomend the perth/western Australian Job market, I'm like a kid in a candy store over here. $55 per hour to knock up shutters on a mine site. It's like 150k p.a
Where do you find these jobs? My husband is carpenter
@@MrMaxm144 I know a chippy in Perth now he says over there is crap $45 ph he can’t afford to live with his family in QLD on ABN you would be getting $65-70 instead your on a secluded mine site working 12 hr shifts for $55 you need to go self employed mate get licenced a regular carpenter in qld is on $120-40k per year for 40 hrs per week on ABN. houses are expensive but you can’t live in the mines forever and the prices just keep going up we bought ours for $700k last year had it valued last month for $925 when it’s finished it will be $1.2-.13 mil if you get in with a few little builders you would be laughing. To be living in a mine away from family site I would be wanting $100 ph+
@@leannegodwin7308 tell him get licenced and start advertising, post in local facebook groups, go to businesses offering handyman services go to local small builders they are all looking for workers you just have to find them once you get in with them keep looking and grow your client base , Facebook has groups eg carpenters wanted in Queensland plenty of people offering jobs
those jobs are for Australians only.
@@henryfletch3860 haha tell that to the Australians and Australian company’s that are over the moon giving me the work because 1 ) I turn up 😎 Only yesterday the Aussie asbestos checker didn’t even turn up to sample a wall, left me and the client hanging, seems it’s common practice here.
staayunder man its good for business it seems alot of tradies bring their whole life to work with them
@@danielkiss78 some trades are totally taking the piss I had a woman who said she was quoted $500k for a side extension, I valued it at $150k, houses are so expensive and we put so much time and money into training and buying shed loads of tools it’s fair we get paid well, without carpenters there would be no homes so if a selling agent gets $25k for selling a house that takes a week why should we not get paid well, if the home owner wants the sales profits then we deserve a good wage don’t you think ?
@@libatalklieb5793 unfortunately people see us as slaves ripping them off then they go an pay $150,000 for a car made in thailand that costs $20,000 to make they see value in shit products but not the time and skill of a tradesman, it’s how it always has been and probably as it always will be 👍🏻

Hey mate, appreciate the info. I moved to South Australia as a NVQ l2 qualified chippie. Have been working for a few different people but want to go off and do my own jobs but have been frustrated by what I've been told by regulating bodies and companies that I have to go through a process of showing my experience mainly through video evidence (with me in it) doing certain carpentry task and also probably will have to do gap training if I can't supply this. Almost as if I have to redo my training just to get qualified here. Does anyone have experience as a chippie trying to get their quals transferred ONSHORE in Australia?
@@ainsleyknott8628 I did mine with these guys in 2019 but in the uk visaskills.com/about-us/ it’s easy enough but worth doing to get your AQF3 , just take pictures of everything you do
