    Just on stage 2 of skills assessment at the moment waiting for my interview, I’m the same I do everything manufacturing ,fitting , first fix ,second fix , cabinet making . Looking to go Queensland myself hopefully find a joiners shop that needs someone being self employed with my own workshop in the uk I’m half looking forward to just going and getting a job without all the stress

      I was the same at first but cabinet making here doesn’t pay very well, I expected to be just fitting kitchens but there’s nothing like howdens or wren here the cabinet makers make and install and they pay very little subcontracting fitting, if you get your own shop I think you will do well I have thought about it but not right now, I’m renovating a house and working self employed so haven’t got time to think 😂 flipping houses is where the money is

    I grew up in Dutchland and did my trade schooling in the eighties. Back then, we'd do two years of trade school (lower technical school), followed by apprenticeship. If you wanted to become a contractor, you'd have to follow that with five years of night school to get your building contractor diploma. But, once qualified, there was (and I think still is) no further need for bullshit licenses. The emphasis was on qualifications rather than control through licensing. There was practically no such thing as building inspections, and that hasn't changed much. When I came to NZ (pre licensing) I already could not believe the lack of workmanship on the one hand, and the pedantic control (inspections and micromanaging requirements for plans). That is so much worse now. I think the licensing system is to compensate for education and training deficiencies, which we just can't get right. There seems to be no willingness at any level ensure inherent quality. Everything is done through control. And don't get me started on those stupid utes.

      I agree with you its like they dont have enough skilled trades for the kids to go with so they keep them in college as long as they can because it is literally a workforce of kids with no guidance and the shit I see they call Australian standards is comical, Chinese standards are better haha

    Yes, as a qld carpenter and having vans for 20 odd years l can't believe l ever owned a ute, crazy idea that just won't go away, a lot of young guys have 4x4 Ute's and twin cabs for w/ends and camping..originally chippys were also joiners and cabinet makers .. cabinet making is basically machine made..only skill is fitting..

    • @ProBuildCarpenter
      @ProBuildCarpenter  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching ✌🏻I get it having a Ute then going on the beach so if it’s your only vehicle it covers both bases but when it’s a company vehicle like mine it doesn’t make sense my back seat is covered with toolboxes and I can’t carry materials, I think splitting chippies into individual category’s was maybe to shorten training but when it’s 4 years to be a carpenter that the uk teach carpenter&joiner that covers cabinetmaking is 3 years something has become over complicated especially some of the stuff I am seeing, carpenters that can’t fit doors is insane !

  • @Saltdriverdiver
    @Saltdriverdiver 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Mate cheers for this Video I have a question if you don't mind me asking - I've been looking at AUS to study Carpentry and I had this exact thought process yesterday so AUS offers trade courses for foreign students to study and work for about 3.5 years before a skill assessment BUT they offer Carpentry, Joinery and Cabinet maker all as separate trades !? Which one would you recommend to go into ? Obviously I would like to do them all as a carpenter should and its a bit disappointing to know its so specialized because I would like to do a bit of everything you know. And yes the UTES look terribly designed lol

    • @ProBuildCarpenter
      @ProBuildCarpenter  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do carpentry, once you have carpentry you can automatically get licenced as a joiner, hard floor layer, structural landscaper, carports garages and sheds, metal gutters and fascia’s, roof and wall cladding, these are all covered under carpenter, cabinet maker is a seperate course costs $900 online learning but it’s pointless cabinet makers here make and fit kitchens it’s not like the uk where you can buy from howdens, I wanted to just fit kitchens here but it doesn’t pay so well unless you make them and fit them

    We do have very strict building regulations, and really licences are essential from an insurance point of view, customers are more critical and educated now and do have high expectations! 🤨

    • @ProBuildCarpenter
      @ProBuildCarpenter  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I will be honest with you, compared to the uk where no licences are required, Australian regulations are very very poor, the actual standards of construction are behind by approximately 20-30 years, I will give you 3 examples
      Timber homes are constructed with no wall insulation, this means on hot days your house will be hot inside meaning more use of power and ac to keep the home cool, if insulated the house would keep the heat out and on cold days the reverse.
      Windows are single glazed so the above applies Europe has triple glazed systems !
      Windows and doors are pinned in no foam to seal drafts.
      Concrete floor slabs have no insulation below to prevent heat loss
      Concrete slabs are minimal thickness which is why you constantly see them cracked this is extremely worrying but under aus standards accepted !
      licensing is a money making scheme for the government, why make someone train and get a trade then make them jump through hoops before they can use that trade, $700 to say yes you have a certificate…. This should be free and to charge the fee yearly is even worse do they expect your skills to expire ? If you keep paying the fee they don’t even check if your qualification has been updated.
      Sorry but from what I am seeing daily customers don’t know what high expectations are if they did no one would be buying new build homes because they are complete trash ✌🏻

      @@ProBuildCarpenter OUCH! I admit I live in an older double brick house, which is really solidly built, mostly insulated, rewired, etc. I watch many renovation shows and "The Block", which appears to have very rigid building standards and power/water saving devises too! I have noticed dodgy looking Unit Buildings going up nearby and wondered who could possibly have approved this (a couple of Besser bricks, no concrete, low ceilings, no green space, no fire stairs), and who would ever buy them! But Asian people actually do, off the plan, and obviously without required quality inspections, or council checks! I have to assume now those same builders will be licenced and able to continue without consequences! That has burst my illusions, I thought a local councillor had been paid off once, twice, maybe not!? I'll just stay in my oasis in Sydney, and renovate! I wish you good luck with your move, and regulations, you are certainly in the right place at the right time, to be in construction! Look out for Cowboys! 😄

    • @ProBuildCarpenter
      @ProBuildCarpenter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jenniferharrison8915 you mention fire stairs and I am amazed how little fire protection is used especially in wood houses, like garages incorporated into a home with no fire plasterboards or a fire door into the main building incase the car sets on fire, very little fire boarding at all in homes in high fire risk areas, I speak to builders and they laugh when I ask about these things, building houses out of wood when termites eat wood 😅 brick and block houses would resist both termites and fire a lot better or even the metal frames now being used. Standards need to improve but the problem is as always the big company’s are smashing homes up fast and shoddy if they finish them at all, and small builders like myself that would build good homes have to work here for 4 years before I can get a medium rose licence when I have 24 years of experience building better quality homes in the UK.
      Ps if you phone the qbcc they know less than the trades half the time they don’t even know what you are talking about and these guys are the ones licencing.

      Tools= I would bring hand tools the range here is not great and is quite expensive , power tools are cheap here unless you are using mafell/ festool dealt, akita and Milwaukee are extremely cheap and you can get a full dealt setup of like 12 tools for £1000
      Honestly you can make good money here if you do overtime, and your bills are peanuts, renting is the only expense eg our 4 bed house is around £1300 per month but that's about the cost of the uk now.

      I couldn’t say, I believe Melbourne and Sydney pay more but there’s loads of jobs and it’s quite cushy

    Hello mate, i have a few questions if you wouldn't mind, I'm currently 17, and set to finish my lvl 2 carpenter course which is 18 months, is it worth doing the lvl 3 afterwards? Also, how many years experience do i need on site to become a carpenter in Australia?, wanting to get there asap, English weather with is killing me lol, many thanks.

      Hi mate, it’s always good to have your gold card I left college early and went working at a kitchen factory I had to get assessed on site for my level 2 and then I got recognition of prior learning to transfer to get my Australian qualification.
      I think I needed either 5-8 years worth of work experience for permanent residency.
      You could come over on a working holiday visa that also gives you more points on a visa application you can stay for 2-3 years on that

    Hi pal, I am thinking of making the jump, either Sydney or Gold Coast/ Brisbane, what one will you recommend as I have spoke to someone who can offer me work in either (carpenter) also how did you get a permanent visa cheers pal

      Hard choice but I like brisbane it’s not as busy, we have the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and all of the islands, Sydney you earn more but houses are extortionate

      Hi mate check this out, but you are best googling courses and you will find company’s that provide the training and they sort out the funds I’m doing one now with gimbal training in Brisbane

    Hi mate , I’m a 22 year old fully qualified carpenter from the uk with 6 years experience in the trade, I have got my visa accepted and looking to come over in September time to Queensland, what companies are the best to look out for for possible work, could you point me in the right direction?

    • @ProBuildCarpenter
      @ProBuildCarpenter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends what you want too do, if you want to earn cash then get your ABN and go self employed subcontracting but if you want finance on stuff then you will need a full employed job most pay 35-45 per hour but you get holiday pay and most offer vehicles

    What made u make the switch and what r the pros and cons

    • @ProBuildCarpenter

      The country is miles better, it is spotless in brisbane compared to Manchester filled with spice heads and homeless in the city centre, in the uk crime is out of control, kids in Australia are like kids not wanting to be gangsters like in the uk so I didn’t want my son getting in with the wrong crowd.
      The roads are not jam packed, the weather is great , basically Australia is like the uk in the 80s, workwise the pay here is a lot better and there are far more opportunities. If you have never been to Australia have a trip and you will see the benefits, I don’t even mind paying higher taxes because all the parks are maintained the roads are in good condition and you can see where your money is going, in the uk you pay taxes the parks are wrecked, roads are full of holes, bins never get emptied and the politicians are giving their mates million pound deals, basically I can’t stand the uk anymore it is not a country for the British it is for migrants and refugees the working class get no help

    • @ProBuildCarpenter

      How do you mean ? Depends what your wages are coming into the house and where you live, rent can be $550-1500 per week depending where you live
