    I can recommend Shields’ book Small Ceremonies. I read it about 40 years ago now and it was very good. One of her early books. Also enjoyed her biography of Jane Austen which I read last year for Jane Austen July. I will have to check out Joan Silber. Thanks for mentioning her. It would be great to hear what you’ve been reading when you have time or the inclination to share it!

      I've read Small Ceremonies! I believe it was her first novel? I need to revisit it. I haven't the read the biography of Jane Austen but plan to because I'm so curious about how she would write an actual biography. I hope if you read Silber you will let me know about it! I'm hoping to do a video about what I've been reading lately later this week.

    Nice to see you Priscilla. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Alice Munro. I can only guess that maybe there is a grief of sorts when you learn that a favorite author is not who you thought they were and if I understood you correctly that it changed your understanding of her writing. But yes lets focus on other phenomenal women writers. I have many of the books you mentioned on my shelves waiting for me. I know that at any moment I have "phenomenal authors works at a hands reach" I had not heard of Joan Silber so I googled her and The Guardian article from 2019 called her America's Alice Munro. I am sure she would not want that association now!!! I like the cover of her book. Be well Evening Reader.

      Hi Marcia! It's lovely to see you! That's an interesting comparison, Silber to Munro. I know she admires Munro's writing, but her work is much different in tone than Munro's. More generous, more expansive overall, I think.

    I cannot read Munro any more. But Shields is a great choice! I reread The Stone Diaries last December and it was great all over again. Yeah, I think I read Shields' Austen biography in Jan or Feb this year. I am still being reproached from the shelves by The Animators, which I bought on your recommendation and have yet to read. Yoli. Oh Yoli. You're making it really hard for me to do this tag by taking all the good answers. I have Joan Silver's name on my "authors to explore" list. Linked stories!? Talty vibes!!?? I'm moving her up the list! This tag is full of wonderful recommendations.

      I feel a Shields re-read coming up. Maybe her novel Unless this time. Did you ever read her short stories? I think you would enjoy them. You will read The animators when you are ready. No point in forcing it! Oh, I loved Night of the Living Rez so much. I think doing linked stories well is an art. I hope you enjoy Silber if you decide to pick her up. Such excellent choices for authors all around, and I'm a fan of all of them. Did you ever read Silber's Household Words? It was once of the earlier conventional novels you mentioned. That was a novel that was extremely subdued, but for some reason has stuck with me for years. It's a type of biographic treatment, much like Shields's work. I am going to think about who I'd choose for the tag outside the women you highlighted. If every character in a novel just went to therapy, we'd be bored to death. (Though I do like a good therapy novel!) haha. So good to see you making a video and I hope you have a good weekend coming up.

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I haven't read Household Words, but from your description I clearly need to prioritize it. I have Lucky Us, which was the last conventional novel she wrote. She's so great, even in interviews. I also like a good therapy novel, but those are usually only good if someone's really messed up (therapist or patient). Speaking of that, have you watched Shrinking? I look forward to seeing your version of this tag if you decide to do it. Have a lovely weekend!

It sounds like a case of covert campers' Covid. Sorry for the downhill slide of that trip. I'm in the library line for God of the Woods and when it comes I'm tossing everything aside. I'd like to read Loaded. I have an old book about the Velvet Underground but this one looks cool. It was definitely Rollerblade Hacker's fault that you got stuck with Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. I was going to pick up God of the Woods but my hold for The Cliffs came in so I need to read that first. Excited about the Moore after your discussion. It sounds like you made a breakthrough in your writing and that’s also exciting! The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store is at least 60% getting to know the characters and the plot doesn’t kick in until after that. I enjoyed the audiobook, but I was anxious for something to happen for a long time. All in all a good read, but you have to be in the mood.

      I'm waiting for my copy of The Cliffs! I'm hoping the luck that started with God of the Woods will continue with that one. Fingers crossed about the breakthrough. It's my last ditch attempt, but so far, so good.

    “This is not the camping channel.”🏕🤣 I listened to the fabulous “Black Cake” on audio so I could hear the narrator’s Caribbean accent. Now that I’ve read “The God of the Woods” I want to read more of Liz Moore’s books. I blame the coughing girl in rollerblades for impeding your progress with “The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store” which is quite a good book.

      David, I guess the description spoils the Straub, so don't read it. At first I wasn't sure about it, but she got it just right. At least in my opinion. It's a deep book that's deceptively light in some ways. Thunderclap is getting so much love. I'm looking forward to it in the fall, and maybe planning to take a field trip to Delft!

I got it a netgalley advance and wow. That book is phenomenal. I keep thinking about all the ways she tied everything together. It’s so cohesive. I added all her backlist to my tbr.
