    We are happy to see you back giving a chat about your reading. You do the chatting very well like a conversation, I suppose. I'm a retired person (former Computer Science Professor type). This month I finished reading the last of the Agatha Christie mystery novels. Some were tedious, but most were quite amazing. I've also working on all of Christie's short stories. I finished the 75th one today; so, I'm just about half way through them. My wife encourages me to read beyond the Christie mode. She suggested Secrets by Brendon Slocumb. This is his second music-based mystery. He's work is intriguing. I spent 43 years as a professor and university administrator but little time to read for enjoyment. Retirement means a lot of things, but reading has been a special gift. Again thanks for your conversations.

      George, have you tried any books from Anthony Horowitz’s Sherlock Holmes series? I recommend “The House of Silk.” Horowitz (the creator of the TV series “Foyle’s War”) was given permission by the Conan Doyle estate to write these books.

      George, reading all of Christie is no small feat! I will second your wife in regards to Brendan Slocumb. I read the first in his series, The Violin Conspiracy, earler this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I've got the second one on my shelf and hope to get to it soon.

      Brendan Slocumb's second book is Symphony of Secrets. I just read that his next book is The Dark Maestro, to arrive in 2025.

    Evening Reader! You are alive! So glad to see you. You can talk about the weather, your adventures... here for it. I think I need to dedicate a month to reading my collection of Elizabeth Strout novels. I have only read My Name is Lucy Barton but of course book buying addict that I am, I have picked up many of her books at book sales whenever I saw them. I do think I have a copy of O, Caledonia, Elspeth Barker somewhere. Many of my books are packed up as I bought new bookshelves and need to paint my living room where I have my book collection!. Procastimaster. Why do today what I can put off until tomorrow. ugh. Reading a few books but my main focus is Lonesome Dove which I am reading with Tony P from LIfe On Books Podcast. great book so far, great bunch of people participating in the book club. Hope to see you in the near future~ no pressure. Please!!!!

      Marcia, I am with you on the procrastination! It's a terrible problem in that I even procrastinate doing things I want to do--like making videos, or responding to comments!--and it's exhausting. I've got to say, Lonesome Dove is worth pushing everything else aside. Even as much as I love Strout, Lonesome Dove wins every time. I'm so happy to hear you are enjoying it. The Strout and all the other books will be there when you are done (although I suspect everything will pale in comparison for awhile after you finish it). Always so happy to see you here!

    Just yesterday, I was thinking about how much I would enjoy a new post from Priscilla. And here you are!😁 I very much liked “Tell Me Everything.” I went into it with no expectations and decided just to let it take me wherever it flowed. Maybe having set the bar so low is why I enjoyed it so much.😆

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      MJ! I think setting the bar low was probably the right way to go. I loved the writing as always, and once I got used to the third-person omniscient narrator I also liked that. Strout is so clever, I know I'll get more on the second read. She layers in so much, I always get more out of second (or third) readings, even if I love something the first time. I hope all is well with you!

    I have been enjoying Still Photos also but in small bites. The memories and storytelling are so relatable and familiar that they spark my own memories... good, bad and bittersweet.

      @EveningReader  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I liked that it felt almost like reading a journal. I enjoyed the free association she let herself do with each photo, so that sometimes we got a story from the past and sometimes a thing more recent.

    Good to see a video from you! I am so behind that it's hindering me from filming. haha. I will try to take motivation from you.
    Sirens & Muses sounds so good.
    I didn't know there was going to be another Strout book. I do hope to get back in Lucy's head one more time and see how she perceived what happened between her and Bob. I wonder if the Lucy/Olive passages suffered from how passive it all was?
    I need to figure out my Ten Before the End. I have it in my head that I want to only reread in December, but I have to see how the election turns out before I make any long-term commitments. The stress is real.

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sonya, I have the same problem--I get so behind I almost feel bad about making a video. And then I'm slow to reply to comments these days because I'm distracted by too many other things that aren't as pleasant as this. I'd definitely be curious to hear what you think of Sirens & Muses if you get around to it.
      I realized too late that I didn't say anough about what I liked about Tell Me Anything. I really want Lucy's perspective on Olive, too. I hope we get to hear it.
      The election really is making it so difficult to plan. I have a Ten Before the End stack (that's more like 20 before the end, ha), but in 2016 I stopped doing anything at all for several months other than doom scrolling. This year I've started early, even though I am trying to remain hopeful!

    I like that you read one novel in the art world and then wanted to read another one with art in it. Sounds like Framed! led you to some good books, that's really good to hear.

      Heather, if I'd been organized and prepared (as I never am), I could have gotten in more! I love books about art and artists, both fiction and nonfiction.

    I scored a free copy of O Caledonia from ThriftBooks; at this point it will be a 2025 book but I'm looking forward to it.
    I've heard so many different, conflicting things about Eliza Clark but this sounds terrific. I want to try it!
    I found Tell Me Everything very satisfying and I didn't really care that it wasn't a Lucy book. I loved seeing her from Olive's prickly point of view. The book could have been called Bob By the Sea. Thanks for the shout out!

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bob by the Sea! Yes. I also liked seeing Lucy through Olive's eyes--but looking at a speck of dust through Olive's eyes is interesting, too, so there's that.
      Boy Parts is a tough one. It's not an easy read, but I really was taken with Clark's daring and direction in creating Irina. She's not likable, not by a stretch, but weirdly compelling.

      @EveningReader  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I sort of blame myself for getting all hyped up in anticipation. I really had it in my head that it was another Lucy book, and I was so curious to see what she'd make of Olive. I was happy to spend some time with Bob, though.

    Love your chatty videos! They inspire me to chat with you. Although it says that this video was posted 4 weeks ago [Am I ever behind!] I am in the midst of reading "Song in a Weary Throat" by Pauli Murray, a civil rights and women's rights advocate, a lawyer and, later in life, an Episcopal priest. The book is her autobiography, written during her last years. It's the kind of book that I am reading in fits and starts, in order to absorb Murray's narrative of her life and times. I am almost a quarter of the way though, and Pauli is still retelling her experiences during the Depression and her efforts to find employment that will enable her to be a full-time writer. One of my book club friends introduced me to Murray this past summer, and I am happy she did.
    Happy reading!
    Kay

    I like what I’ve read by Masson but it’s far from the entirety of his oeuvre. I never heard of the libel suit - crazy! Strout is on my shelf but I just haven’t gotten there yet.

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The suit was sort of fascinating because it also involved The New Yorker, where the articles that became In the Freud Archives, the book she wrote about psychotherapy, first appeared.

    I liked, but did not love, Tell Me Everything. My favorite Strout books are the original Olive K and Oh William.

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I completely agree on Olive K. My other favorite is Lucy by the Sea, which took the place of Anything Is Possible. Funnily, I had the same reaction to Oh William that I had to Tell Me Everything, but I loved it the second time around.
