I love mushrooms, too! I must admit to being a bit jealous of your life in Amsterdam! But I'm also with you on how great it would be to live in Scotland. Thanks for making this video. I've enjoyed getting to know more about you!
What a fun video. Love your personality and your easy laughter. I am not surprised that you are winning over new prescribers as you go along here on booktube. Ms Evening Reader just remember us little ones here when you are famous and overrun with new fans. 😜Look forward to your second installment of bits about your life you are so kind to share. 🥰📚
Hi Priscilla, I have so many comments to this video😊 I read that the Dutch of the tallest people in Europe so I at 4 feet 11 1/2 would also have issues with the clothes. I was just in Amsterdam last spring, but I stayed mostly in Haarlem and that was my first time in that city and I really loved it. I hope to come back in the fall. I speak Spanish, but have a really hard time with French even though they’re both Latin languages. It’s the accent and the grammar that’s so different in French. My father was born in Puerto Rico, so I picked up Spanish at home by osmosis and yes that really is a thing. I lived in Madrid when I was 23 and Japan when I was 50 but at age 73 I think I would only live someplace for three months and come back to warm Hawaii. I want to go to Bruges next year. I was supposed to go last year but I got Covid in Paris when it was 100° not fun! I also got a little boost from my best of 23 video but not as big as yours. Wishing you a great 2024.❤ aloha friend
Maya, I'm very sorry to hear you got Covid on your trip last year. Haarlem is probably my favorite city in the Netherlands--I have friends who live there and it's always fun to visit. Bruges is lovely! Yes, the Dutch are stunningly tall! Wishing you a wonderful 2024!
@@EveningReader yes, it was pretty miserable to be stuck in Paris, without air-conditioning with a high fever. But, even though I missed Bruges, I loved Haarlem, and plan to visit with my daughter later this year, I did recover for a few days in Paris, and that was marvelous. Aloha.
Thank you for answering my question! :) I would love to go to Scotland some day. I've never been to Europe before, but I can't wait to go and I need to stop stalling and just do it. It was really fun to get to know you more and congrats on the new growth on your channel!! :) I loved your answer about missing the sounds of summer. I think I would really miss that as well. Hope you have a great rest of your reading month!
Farrah, I was 40 when I came to Europe for the first time. It's never too soon--or too late! It's funny about those sounds, how they're so easy to take for granted. It never occurred to me they wouldn't be here, and it took me a while to get used to the quiet. Thanks for the kind words about my channel.
I just read a book about the Danish concept of hygge and the Dutch equivalent is apps gezellig😊 I had to pass French B2 level to get PR, I get what you are studying for😅 So lovely to learn more about you! xx
Hi Nix, yes hygge is heel gezellig! I was lucky to only have to get through A2 for my exams, although I plan to continue on through the B level. It will be much less stressful just to learn for fun.
The first question is the one I wanted to know too. I just love the expats stories about where they went, why and how. TY. Love that you took your cats and were able to. We also had a Siamese cat at one point and I love their strong personalities and chattering. I am visiting Edinburgh this spring!! Now I'm looking forward to it even more! We are vegan with 6x a year eating cheese on pizza. I did make a face at mushrooms. HAHA. Is it easier to get vegan foods like 'ice cream' in Amsterdam?
I hope you have a wonderful time in Edinburgh! It's my new favorite city. Vegan foods are getting easier to find here--not so much ice cream, but lots of vegan meat and cheese substitutes, vegan bakeries, and more vegan restaurants every day. We're very lucky here in that produce is much cheaper than in the states--and also just better in terms of flavor, etc. because it isn't shipped so far.
Hi, there! I just wanted to say that I LOVE your channel! I adore reading & talking about books but my mom isn't a big reader, and I feel like I've found a book mom through you. Thank you!!!
Currently watching and I have to say that I relate to your love of Tex/Cal Mex! I just graduated from Santa Clara University in Northern California but I've lived in Austin for 10+ years and I love it here!
Oh, Best Friends is the best! I've visited the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah and it is amazing - just very heart-filling to see such so much care put into saving animals. Really really beautiful place & organziation. Also, my europe tip is: Vienna has a ball season in January & February where you can get tickets to attend a ball at the Hofburg Palace and it is AMAZING. Very magical and Vienna in Jan/Feb is very affordable and not crowded and lovely. :)
You obviously know how to travel right, lol. It's so much better without crowds. And the cooler weather is just a great excuse to constantly pop into a lovely cafe.@@EveningReader
@@Beach652 Haha, spending much of the year dealing with tourists every day, we do everything we can not to be in those crowds. And you are so right--best cafe weather!
"Editing is hard" 😂Hah! I felt that. 😻Oh my goodness, I just love the expression on Moxie's face in that photo! What a cutie! And Chloe's coloring is so beautiful. 😍 I'm so sorry you can't get your favorite flavor of ice cream. I can empathize, as I left my favorite chocolates behind in California when I moved (they come from a little family owned chocolate shop), and when I was in Singapore, I desperately wanted some pepperoncini's, but I couldn't find a jar of them for less than S$45.00 (they're not **that** good! lol). This was such a fun video, Priscilla. I'm really looking forward to the book-focused Q&A sequel. As always, thank you for those kind words about my channel. 🥰
Hannah, our kitties are both VERY expressive. Moxie's most common look says, "You're doing it wrong." In the case of the ice cream, I really don't need it, so it's probably for the best. Ha! Thank you for the fun questions!
Thanks for putting so much thought into this Q&A. I’ve studied German so I was surprised to hear that “lekker” is the Dutch word for “tasty” because it’s “lecker” (same pronunciation) in German. I’m guessing there might be other similarities between Dutch and German, given that they’re both from the Germanic family of languages. Thanks also for telling us more about your wonderful kitties. 😺😸
MJ, of course I thought of several other things to say about phrases/language after filming! I'll include a few in the next video. Yes, Dutch has a lot of similarities with German, and also surprisingly with French (words more than structure). We do love our kitties!
I speak French so it's interesting to hear that there are some word similarites with that language, too. I look forward to your next video.@@EveningReader
OMG we like the same pizza toppings! I often get mushrooms and hot pepper. ❤❤❤ I am always torn between pizza with mushrooms and olives or mushrooms and hot pepper. Would choose Edinburgh over Paris any day...
Few things compare to summer sounds in Texas. Hello from Texas, by the way! I agree with you about the food here. The Texas food scene is second to none. 😊
It's true--there's so much good food in Texas, and not just TexMex! I'm happy someone else appreciates those Texas summer sounds (although Georgia does a fine job, too).
LOL as soon as I heard the question about favorite word or phrase in Dutch I shouted: LEKKER! 😁😋 I used to live on Bonaire (Dutch Caribbean) but only picked up a few Dutch words. Papiementou was a bit easier for me.
No jalapenos??? I'd have to bring an extra suitcase. But I'd love to not have to drive. I have some cool stuff in walking distance but I'd love to be car free. Looking forward to part 2!
We can get jalapenos! Just not available as an option for pizza topping. Whoops. We can also get what they call "salsa," but it's a lie. That's what you'd need the suitcase for. Being car free is the best, except sometimes (or most of the time now that it's winter) when it's cold and raining and the fridge is empty.
@@EveningReader do you make your own salsa, then? I always have good intentions of doing this but with a giant wall of them at the store I am lazy. Not to rub it in or anything. Green and red....got to have both.
@@readandre-read No. I will make pico de gallo, but haven't tried making salsa because I am also lazy. For awhile we could get Pace at one of the expat groceries, but it changed owners. We CAN get Cholula, Tapatio, and Valencia, which helps a bit. But when it comes to chips and salsa, no great options other than spicing up the store-bought version (the HOT is laughably weak!).
Ha ha, you can't hide from me! Yes, we are so lucky to have the trains, trams, and buses, although Germany is going through a real struggle right now. They used to be the best, so I hope they get it resolved.
We have never been to Europe. Your experiences moving and there and discovering all the new favorite places sounds so nice. I would miss Mexican food! I skated in fourth grade; never again. Yay for all your booktube success.
Moving here was nice but also difficult in a lot of ways. Still, I would do it again. I loved to roller skate as a kid; my one time in ice skates I clung to the rail and cried until my dad agreed to take me home.
Brian, no jalapenos as a pizza topping option--but I assure you I can buy a jar of them at the store! But no Cherry Garcia. I'm guessing it has to do with the cherries. And yes, Edinburgh has my heart.
It made me laugh the image of helpful Dutch people correcting your attempts at speaking Dutch so much that you can hardly speak. I think you need to get a train south to hear those night sounds in Europe. A trip to Spain perhaps? The Spanish rail system is good.
