PN empty steel 5NY3 cross Railfirst Bemax empty ore at Yunta feb 16 2024
Whilst invading South Aus recently I encountered a pair of Railfirst EL class parked in the loop at Yunta. Knowing that the PN empty steel job 5NY3 was behind me, I pulled up to get the cross. NR things 27 and 37 on the front of the empty steel and ELs 53 and 54 on the front of what I have been told is the empty minerals to the Bemax siding just to the west of Broken Hill. Featuring the pink ore boxes. It had been a long time since I was last in that region and train activity is now woeful compared to the good ole days. However, the pair of EL class did enthuse me to fetch out the video camera.

A Jolly Green Giant passes

3801 the Jolly Green Giant makes a visit to the Central West, performing shuttles from Bathurst during some miserable winter weather. I managed to shoot some footage over the four days that it was here. Sleet, pea souper fog and some sunshine providing different conditions to enjoy that magnificent sound. 3801 now back to the full 245 psi boiler pressure.

Six ZA class EE 12CSVT Mk 3 units were built from 1973 for the TGR. ZA1 being renumbered 2114 in the ATN Tasrail era. Originally 2350 hp, they were downrated to 1800 hp. 3801 4-6-2 ex NSWR built in 1943 stomps up the Blue Mountains and through the Central West of NSW. With some bonus buddies.     I had a run in with an inspector from Parkes a tall thin young bloke. I'd cleaned the cab of an 80 class and this inspector walked up the four foot where all the oil was and then walked into the cab putting oily footprints on the cleaned floor. He told me to clean it again and I told him if he wanted it clean then he could bl**dy well do it himself. He asked for my name and then reported me to the chargeman who was Chubby Perry and still alive today at 72 now. Whilst the inspector walked to the chargeman's office I quickly mopped the floor again. Eventually Chubby called me on the PA system and told me to clean the cab floor again and I refused and said it was clean and if he didn't believe me go and have a look for himself. As we walked across the shed with the inspector close behind Chubb said in a low voice "you've already redone it haven't you". With the inspector so close behind I didn't answer and so Chubby and the inspector went out to the loco and Chubb climbed into the cab to take a look. He then climbed down and tore a strip off the inspector who's face went from smugness to absolute horror with Chubby yelling at him telling him to get out of loco or be booked out late the reason being wasting shed staff members time. Chubby had his back to me berating the inspector who was facing me. I gave the inspector the "finger" and he quickly climbed into the locos and they whistled out. On walking back Chubby said to me "I knew you'd redone it and did you see the look on his face". I replied "yeah sure did, you could have put a turd in his hand but you wouldn't have gotten a better look". I know it was lousy thing to do but sometimes smug people full of their own self importance need to be taken down a peg or two. As a side note Chubby taught me how to drive the locos at LMC from electrics to diesel a 46 class being the first electric I drove and a 49 class being the first diesel. He taught me the hand signals to coupling and uncoupling locos and connecting and disconnecting air hoses. Changing ends, starting and shutting down diesels and how to operate the turntable and safely stow locos in the paddock. When they had that collision a Delec that bent 8029 some bloke from Sydney came to LMC to tell us how to drive locos and so I had to play the role of I've never done this before as Chubby teaching me was not legal. He just said one night on back shift "your a railway enthusiast mate have you driven an engine yet?". When I said no he said "well it's about bl**dy time you did!".

    My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🚞🚝🚉🚈🚇🚅🚄🚃🚂🛤🚊🚋 especially railmotors like those. He thinks they are highly underrated rail transportation vehicles and all should be preserved, restored, and put back into service carrying passengers and mail on lines that are not used anymore or don't get passenger service. He also thinks that Siemens, Progress Rail, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build full size working replicas of antique railmotors and the departments of transportation should restore and rebuild railroad lines that were abandoned and removed and run these on them.

    I worked at The Risk in the 70's . We used both the cane slings and the smaller ones for the auto exchangers . With the staff instruments, suppose to be on manual but kept them on auto , until you heard a vehicle pull up , in case it was an inspector. At which time they were quickly switched to manual . Only got caught once and got a bung for it

      yep short-cuts were prolific on the railway back in the good ole days, I enjoyed ETS, not being a fan of train order system, though I did enjoy the manual Track Warrant system while belting around Tasmania.

      The Victorian Railway and subsequent V/line used mostly Leslie air horns, I am not sure just what variety are on this A class.

    Used work at moolabin at this time frame snd used put all trains to Townsville in no order and send them north must have been hard on them Marshall them on. Later on put them in blocks make easy for all.

      I have not been employed on the railway for very many years, so don't know how much current day train drivers are paid. However, I do remember hearing when the average payment reached $100,000.oo per year which was a few years ago now. So, probably today just over that amount.

      Cooee Gregg, Yep, I stumble along now being an old fart pensioner. Nothing much happens here on our pathetic railway to get excited about. I only shot about 10 minutes worth of video during 2023. And, only unearthed this video clip at Hartley Vale while hunting for other material. You have Lofty ideas of relocation ? I am not sure just where you mean, not Mount Lofty in SA ? Avoiding the ravages of Mum Nature is the problem today. At least it has not become too serious here. Gotta feel sorry for the poor mongrels who are copping it repeated times. Steve.

    Great video Steve, brings back memories of travelling up the Mountains to Lithgow. Mt Vic in winter was cold and the wind used to cut through you when you had to wait for the examiner to finish the brakes.

      Yes Mt Vic could be a chilly place, and it amuses me these days with all the razor wire surrounding the interurban stabling sidings. I vaguely recollected having shot some video at Hartley Vale, but only found the brief footage when hunting for some other material.

    How can you call that a baby Garratt? There were certainly larger ones but there were also many smaller Garratts that were a fraction of this size.

      G'day, Yes there are numerous garratts that were more oomphish compared to the QR version, especially in Africa on 3 foot six. But, my dubbing the QR version as a baby dosen't diminish the charm. Most babies have charm.

    love this train how did it handle when driving it was the brakes hard to get it right to stop the train in the right spot at the station

      Howdy David, The standard brake system being used is the EP (electro-pneumatic) with blended regenerative on motor cars. Regenerative brake system turns the traction motors into generators resulting in magnetic friction to slow wheel rotation. There are seven steps of application and release of the brakes, making it fairly easy to adjust braking force. Working any train in westinghouse air brake requires more attention, but still works well. You may need to use the air brake when EP fails. The main problem with the Tangara design is the Wheel Slide sensor. This will activate when any wheel slip and or slide occurs and this reduces or fully releases the brakes. This system was implemented to prevent skidded wheels due to being locked up. So, when any rain occurs you could cop the wheel slide and potential braking dramas. Some tangaras have run into things when the brakes were kicked off by the wheel slide sensor. It is a long time since I was last in the cab of any smog hollow suburban train. So, I don't know how the more modern sets perform.

Gold Coast & Canberra even allow 70 km/h in dedicated Street running lanes. Overly cautious, or an excuse to pad out the timetable to artificially get good on time performance numbers? 😂

    I often drove the Express Tram. It was always packed and that added to the weight. I would just hold it flat. My friend that was driving too he hid behind the partition and when we got to Marion Road he asked me why I wasn't scared of derailing and hitting the Stobie Poles and I said "it'll be fine with that big lump of metal at the front".

      G'day Martin, I am pleased that you enjoyed my brief glimpse of the Glenelg trams. I made a couple of treks to Adelaide during the 1990s. but didn't go to squiz the trams on the other occasions. I have seen other video featuring the trams and they do hurtle along, except when street running. I have witnessed the motorists tempting fate with the trams in Melbourne. They also had a restaurant tram in Melbourne, though I didn't ride it. I doubt that there were any stuffed quail on that menu, probably Melbourne pigeon. I also witnessed one tram's trolley pole derail and create havoc in St Kilda Road. The overhead repair mob quickly arrived and sorted it out to get them clanking along again fairly quickly. Pantographs are a more stable method, but then you require zig zagging overhead. I did ride some trams while trekking around Europe in 2008. Trams or Light Rail will hafta make a come back in large cities as we panic about global warming. I have only ridden the smog hollow SLR once back when it only ventured to the Fish Markets. Very expensive. But, it is starting to slink around regions of smog hollow where trad trams once trod before they kyboshed it all

      @@aussiealco I had both Pantographs cut through hooking up on the overhead. Thankfully I was in Jetty Road and going really slowly because the Trams stopped instantly and had I been out on the closed track, Pantograph and overhead damage would have been a certainty. Funny thing is an Inspector turned up and screamed at the top of his lungs "lower those Pantographs"! I waited until he got closer and calmly replied "I can't, they're stuck" After a bit he finally understood

      @@MartintheTinman Yes the smog hollow Elec Trouble mob were not impressed when ever you stuffed their precious overhead. NIL freights today with pantographs, so only squirts occasionally causing dramas with that stuff dangling in the atmosphere. I miss the days of working the electric locos which required more attention to detail than working diesels. During winter you could get the overhead steaming due to the amps being sucked out. Keeping an eye on the load meter and overhead line volts. Pull the power and you went nowhere, plus copped the ire of Elec Trouble.

    Thanks Steve. I especially like the after dark footage. The cars made it interesting. I had seven collisions during my time driving and a few when I was a Conductor at the beginning. I was working broken shifts at this time so I was only driving coupled sets. I liked driving the Restaurant Tram the most. Mainly because you got paid to be in Glenelg. Couldn't go drinking in the Pub in your uniform but there was plenty to do at the Bay. They also gave you a meal but they stopped doing that, officially anyway. The main meal was either an Eye Fillet Steak or Macadamia and Apricot stuffed Quail and the Desert was a Chocolate H type Tram filled with Chocolate Mouse with a sliced Strawberry in one end

    Any shots of the original tail gondola had the wasp stripes and lamp on the back. Over time the they got lazy with the consist and any old gondala would act as the rear still great memories. The pinkish browns never quite had the pop of the yellow with the blue silver and white BHP LPD livery.

      G'day Josef, I visited the Whyalla region twice, october 1994 and november 2001. On both visits, I did not achieve very much video footage. Motoring around the dirt tracks in 1994, I discovered a pair of DE locos rattling towards Iron Baron and chased them. One of the MKA rebuilt things had apparently failed and I encountered those light engines returning from Iron Baron. After waiting for some time, finally the pair of DEs rattled past with the train which I chased back to Whyalla. That was the only train that I encountered on that brief visit. I did not include all of the video shot in the clip uploaded to youtube. The rear ore hopper did possess tiger stripes. I did not take any photos of the light engines or train as I was concentrating on video. In november 2001, I again didn't fair very well and only encountered a single train in wonky weather. I did snag a digital shot of that train which had DE8 plus a CK class unit. Steve.

      For a period, a diesel assisting a soot belcher had to be hooked onto the front of the soot belcher to prevent soot and cinders from clogging the diesel radiator grill. However, when reaching Orange on dawn, they remarshalled the unit to have the 59er on the front.

    I like the way you define things Steve. Smog Hollow, to hoof, and now a new one to me - the dinky toys. I like it. Used to run quad 48/49 class loco's with loaded 3200T coalies from Tahmoor to Enfield. Blocking the crossing at Camden Rd. seemed hilarious to us at 25 odd kph, with traffic backed up on both sides as far as you could see. We didn't always have the full road, so not our fault.

      G'day Brett, yes the dinky toys could grind down to 13 kph for hours. Working home from Dubbo with a quad on train 8136 was a magic sound in the cab clambering up the 1 in 40s. Alas, my cohorts didn't like the cramped cab, and we ended up banning them as lead unit on mileage jobs. I recollect working coalies from Wangco and A&B with quad 49 class, or a mixture with dinky toys. Had quad dinky toys on the Dubbo Oily 8331 a couple of times., and cab video of that appears in my youtube channel. Lots of jargon utilized on the railway.

      I joined the Government Railway of NSW, there were 8 trainees hired every couple of months, such was the turnover of blokes. Things are very different today.

    I saw the cane train travelling along Howard Street when I was visiting Nambour in 1988 as part of expo 88 in Brisbane. I was actually in a coach which was taking me and a group of fellow tourists to the Big pineapple. We had to stop for the cane train it was great seeing it at the time.

    Did the 46 class throttle have any notch’s? it looks like it just slides

      25 notches existed for the master controller for powering, 19 resistance notches, notch 20 being full field, and five notches of weakfileds. Changing motor combination after the reverser is moved to the next position, the controller is returned to notch one while holding in the button on the end of the handle. The next motor combination will be engaged and notched out to full field and or weakies. When under motion, it was not necessary to notch out each of the resistance. But when commencing motion on a steep grade, each resistance notch would be selected to ensure that wheel slip does not occur, or excessive motor amps demanded.

      I remember the L class had 36 notches, it was a wheel with a handle arising from a cylinderal column.

    Nice collection of videos there Steve. Especially like the 46 class video. Loved driving them especially on the Main North. Something I never thought to do was video my work.

      G'day Mike, yep I luved driving our buzz boxes even if some of them, the 46ers, were well past their use by date. Most of my video was shot to send to my USA amigos. Only much later did I get the idea of plonking the stuff in You Tube, plus the couple of DVDs that are available at Alcoworld at Ingleburn NSW. I was always careful when I whipped out the camera at work, being VERBOTEN. Thankfully, I got on ok with most drivers, plus The Big Bloke, loco inspector at LMC. The dinky toy 48 class were my fav loco even if my cohorts thought them too cramped.

    Thank you for that, much appreciated. Way back in 1952, my father and I went to spend a week of the May school holidays with his aunt and uncle at Rylstone. The aunt was the last of the family still to live there. The trip out was to Wallerawang, with a change to a train of dog box carriages to take us on. The property started just on the outskirts of Rylstone adjoining the train line. A 5 year old me used to run up to the fence to watch each passing train. To my great pleasure, the return trip started with a rail motor, before the change - which I think was at Lithgow. Even greater pleasure was being able to sit at the very front, just across from the driver.

    The Mill closed in 2003 so sadly no more cane trains there. 16 coaches on the Sunlander possibly won’t see that today.

    I used to get on these exact trains in the early 90s. I would catch them at the Melton station to go to work in Melbourne. I miss the old coaches. Especially the old compartment ones with the sliding doors. I used to catch these up to Bendigo as well and I'd sit in the door way with the door wide open in the heat of summer. No one freaked out that the door was open. The brease was nice.

    Great video there Steve love the good old 48s one of nsw hardest working trains I reckon, its cool to see when you excelerat on the 48 class when all that smoke comes out they look like a bloody steam train, thanks for sharing the video Steve. Ted
