Are you just going downhill on your bike? Get your ass in gear and take that path in the forest the other way, from the bottom to the top. Then tell me which is better.

5'9" and purchased a L as a novice. Handled well, but seat tube was too long -- okay in the store, but not the trail. All subsequent bike purchases have been M: more responsive, less weight. Important since I ride gnarly, knurly, undulating trails and not smooth downhills. Recently went from 27.5 to 29 with a similar experience: does seem to glide over obstacles better but feels a bit sluggish in tight turns.

So it seems to me like 90% of 27.5/mix/29 test videos on YT are mainly focused on speed and time difference while 90% of us don't race....

I personally experienced rock roll slide while slightly braking, realizing to release the brake , I save myself and the bike. Going forward I’ll practice the peak & push. In the past I typically stand tall to “peek” to see if something is rollable or dropable……

After just rolling down a vertical face I can report the technics described here were used. It was at least higher than my bike length and I didn’t want to fall off the face. Accelerated fast off the bottom and caught up with Shawn ( our ride leader) that showed me the drop in.

If you're 5'10 definitely go with a large, I'm a muscular 5'4 body frame and I have a medium Pivot 429 and I love it... the bike shop dude wanted me to go with a small( I would have hated it).... I might even get a large, I feel like I'm in complete control when the bike is longer. My bike is carbon fiber so it's very light so weight is no problem. Just some input for other shorter riders.

On ebike, 27.5 way more controllable. 29er a bit faster, but less control.

Whatever works...for you. Every rider is different, as are everyone's opinion. The boss of-the-house(the lady), feels much more comfortable and confident on a mullet. Long torso, short legs. And few bikes have a proper frame geometry for mullet. Very few. The best, (and the boy she's on the most), is the KTM Macina Kapoho. Those steep Snowflake progressive geometry frames are most awkward. And we are Conservatives for Life. Best is the tire size, a 29x2.6 front, and a 650b 2.6 rear. Rims make a difference, and she uses the wide 38 & 41mm wide carbon Light Bicycle recon wheels. We can't afford to beat-it to death on epic TH-cam trail videos, but for everyday commuting and trail exploring, it's perfect.

Good news, medium is faster 😀 Did the same to my slightly smaller bike. Works angleset - 1.5 deg and 50mm Nukeproof riser stem with 38mm rise bars. My friend has the same bike, but stock and it feels small when we swap them.

Did you take into consideration that your GEOMETRY is AFU by changing wheel sizes? The GEOMETRY of your 29er took decades to figure out. Ride a 2007 29er and you'll know what I'm talking about. Don't expect to simply swap wheels to make your 29er feel faster, and call it a "mullet" on top of that. F'ing casuals. 26er, 27.5er, 29er, 76er, 79er. MULLET is a bike company, but you'd never know it because you only follow Pinkbike. Funny.

  • @crunchycrispybacon

They should call them what they really are: medium is a small, large is a medium and extra large is just large. They moved all the measurements to the right because no guy likes to be called ‘small’ anything 😂

Mixed wheels only works when you design the bike around mixed wheels, if you just add on a 29er or go with the smaller rear end it won't work. You get pros but more cons because the geo isn't specifically designed which is the biggest part, big brands just adjust their frames or name them differently without designing a completely new bike which is what needs to happen. Not every pivot design works with mullet, just 1 or 2 really, and not every "modern" geo spec works with mullet. You need a bike that is designed around mixed wheels, not adapted to fit mixed wheels. Try the Mullet Peacemaker and you'll feel what an actual mixed wheel bike feels like, now if you wanna live on the edge then the Mullet Honeymaker will surprise you.... it will scare you how fast it goes downhill

This is where I puzzle myself...at 5'10'' with a normal-ish 31" inseam, I'm in that zone where I could stay large or size down to medium. I'm planning my next frame build for later this season or so and am tempted to move to a M...many of the trails and races here locally seem like they'd lend themselves to it. I also make it to the park 10 times or so a year so there's that. It's my main ONE bike to do it all - enduro, park, trails/fun riding so I have to make the purchase $$ count!
