MGM Crew,... Loved following all of you during the race season! I would imagine Rocky Mountain Bicycles and Kona Bicycles are as proud of you all as we all are. I am sure that social media is kind of a pain in the butt to keep up with, but those of us who get to share a little of all of your journey sure do enjoy being taken for the ride! Thanks for your efforts and your time. I wish you all great success and I look forward to seeing and gearing from you all in the future!!!!
Thank-you! We had an amazing time racing this year and we're just taking a little time off before we start filming some more MGM content! Love and appreciate you following along!
Definitely a good vid. It's good to see actual testing to verify or debunk how you feel vs how you actually are. When I got my first 29er back in '07, it came with WTB Nano's, which were a very basic XC type tread and yet, because of the longer contact patch, I was out climbing my old 26er with Kenda Nevegals up some climbs that were before a maybe, that changed to an almost 100% I'd clean them.
Yup, initially a lot of the 29er skeptics thought they were slower because they felt more stable and had more traction and control, but when they looked at their times, it was a different story.
Mullet for play. Full 29er for race, short CS for tight tracks and long CS for higher speed tracks. Any energy savings noticed/less effort on a shorter track will only be multiplied on a longer track. Remember 29er's exist because of what has already been proven. But I do understand the need for one to prove to them selves. You may feel more comfortable initially on the mullet but with time the 29er will be faster and you will adjust and become comfortable on it.
horses for courses! I ride mullet on my hardtail because it is so much fun and turns sharper. But I am actually considering building up a 29er rear for those days with more pedaling on flowing terrain or really long rides where efficiency trumps fun.
To me, mullet shines while freeriding and hitting quick turns. Definitely more playful and fun. 29'er if you're just racing, but also greatly depends on your setup and geo.
Great info and really enjoy y'all and your pro approach to things. I would love to see a video where you define "carrying speed" and all the dos and don'ts to carrying speed.
i went trough the exact same proces, i had it with the mullet and full 29er commencal supreme. i had ridden 29er dh bikes and 27 before, but i went to a bike park and rented a mullet supreme and apselutely loved it, thought i was way faster trough it on the corners, way more nimble. but then i rented a 29 supreme and realised "this shit is actualy way better"i almost did not even notice a difference in the corners (they where big open berms so that probably made it less noticible) but in the straights i felt my rear end getting less snared up by the rough stuff and it was way less chittery, and because of that the suspension stayed higher up in its travel so i was able to slow down the rebound which made it better on the jumps
A couple of my teammates did the mullet thing with their Nomads a couple of years ago - running a 29er fork and front wheel on a frame meant to be a full 27.5. I went the full 29er route with a Megatower and I've had no major reasons to regret the choice. Mainly just trail and bike park riding, although I will probably do an enduro event again eventually. I wouldn't mind trying a mullet, but at this point I haven't had the opportunity to. Nor do I particularly feel the 29er is a handicap for me in handling. My own technique needs improvement there and I don't think a bike change will make me any better.
Hey guys love all your work especially the Mullet set up and willingness to try new things. I live in Central Oregon and purchased a dedicated Mullet frame and built it up and love this bike👊 Would be curious to see what you guys would do with a shorter chain stay length/proper geometry instead of just swapping wheels. I was doing the same with my 29er going from 65 to 64 degree HT angle but wow I have set new PRs all over with this. However I understand you guys push the edge of the performance package and in the end it’s what makes you feel good and comfortable on so thank you for trying and be safe🌹👊💪💪
Others have done the mullet vs 29er thing as well, and the results are that the 29er wins, but like you said the perception can be different to the result
I've revisited this older video because I'm about to buy some we are one carbon wheels! This video - along with a fe other things I've read have made me simply stick with 29. Anyway - side note - I miss your MGM videos!!!
A demoed bike w/ 29 front and rear were faster than my personal bike which is 27.5 front and rear. I felt much faster, in rolling speed and technical. But I found it harder to get it off the ground and around berms cuz you don't have that ability to get low like a 27.5. this is a pretty neat video, mainly cuz how straightforward the feedback is but also cuz the track looks pretty consistent so it's sort of relatable
Nice! I definitely want to see the same sort of testing on a longer course. I’ve really been enjoying the mullet setup on my sb165. But that was a 27.5 bike to start. So I’ve gained a lot of the 29er benefits from having the wagon wheel up front.
Mixed wheels only works when you design the bike around mixed wheels, if you just add on a 29er or go with the smaller rear end it won't work. You get pros but more cons because the geo isn't specifically designed which is the biggest part, big brands just adjust their frames or name them differently without designing a completely new bike which is what needs to happen. Not every pivot design works with mullet, just 1 or 2 really, and not every "modern" geo spec works with mullet. You need a bike that is designed around mixed wheels, not adapted to fit mixed wheels. Try the Mullet Peacemaker and you'll feel what an actual mixed wheel bike feels like, now if you wanna live on the edge then the Mullet Honeymaker will surprise you.... it will scare you how fast it goes downhill
Thanks for the entertaining/informing videos, seeing snow in the background I assume vid was taken in spring, what setup did you ride in the EWS's, I also see Noga Korem had switched from a mullet to full 29 on the GT high pivot bike, maybe Kona can make a high pivot bike so you get butt tapped less often.
In the end the feeling of “fun” outweighed it all and I’ve been riding and racing mullet. I find that I’m in a stronger body position and can use my legs more in my riding. I’m also more comfortable on unknown and unpredictable terrain.
really interesting to see what you thought. I run a 27.5 trail bike and a 29 agro hardtail, they are so different they both feel good. My times are within 0.5 seconds over a 3 min trail, have never tried mullet.
@10:40 "I don't know what my next move is, to be honest!" ---Well, howabout you ride the 29er but for gosh sakes drop the saddle a tad! :D .............Thanks, totally engaging video! :)
For me Mullet vs 29 first lap on a DH track I went 8 seconds faster with mullet on a 2:30 minute track! I think for steeper DH style tight and twisty tracks mullet is the way and on more flat pedal wide open tracks full 29 is better. My opinion. I also think hight makes a big difference as well.
@@masondekeyrel6539 That's kind of what I figured, you're right there at where it could be either wheel size, especially on a longer, slacker bike like a DH bike that already is stable enough.
Whatever works...for you. Every rider is different, as are everyone's opinion. The boss of-the-house(the lady), feels much more comfortable and confident on a mullet. Long torso, short legs. And few bikes have a proper frame geometry for mullet. Very few. The best, (and the boy she's on the most), is the KTM Macina Kapoho. Those steep Snowflake progressive geometry frames are most awkward. And we are Conservatives for Life. Best is the tire size, a 29x2.6 front, and a 650b 2.6 rear. Rims make a difference, and she uses the wide 38 & 41mm wide carbon Light Bicycle recon wheels. We can't afford to beat-it to death on epic TH-cam trail videos, but for everyday commuting and trail exploring, it's perfect.
Been riding 29er for 12 years. Crazy it's taken this long to catch on. You can see the 27.5 wheel catching in the flats and holes. The faster track I'd imagine would play to the 29er advantages to carry that speed longer
Got my first 29er in 2007, haven't touched a 26er since, played a bit with 650B and no plus, lots of negatives. 650B+ however works really well to convert a 29er HT to something a bit more forgiving. Got my first proper 29er in 2009, a Banshee Paradox, out rode lots of guys on 26er FS who laughed at my 29er. I'm 6'2" though, so for me 29er is a definite, but for someone under 5'10"650B could be an option or mullet.
I’m strictly recreational and ride a 27.5” enduro for the fun factor. There is no doubt that 29’rs roll better and faster in almost all situations. If I did any racing I’d do it on a 29’r for sure.
Well, exactly and a bit no. I got my Banshee Prime pre-production in Feb 2012 and it had adjustable/swappable drop outs so you could run a 68.5*, 68* or 67.5* HTA and you could also choose between long or short drop outs and I'm still running that bike today and very happy with how it rides, even on the steep stuff. They've only gotten better as people caught on to that sort of forward thinking that Banshee had years before.
I love these videos (the riding insight, and the camaraderie); this channel is pretty sweet. Questions: 1. 6:37 Does Miranda’s helmet already come setup to accept the camera under her visor? If not, any chance you can do a little video on your camera setups (or maybe just tell me how she did it)? 2. Regarding a mullet - if you’re not tall (5’6-5’7), does that just become moot point, so that 27.5 really is the only way? Maybe better question is: 3. At what height would you start considering 29s (and mullets)? Or maybe better, below what height would you go 27.5 regardless of terrain? 4. Are you all riding bike frames smaller than what the manufacturers recommend? Would be cool to know for all of you, but especially Miranda, regarding the testing she did on this video. Thanks much for your videos. (Still waiting on Miranda’s Bear Claws).
For the GoPro you need to buy a mount that you can put on the helmet. Also being 5'6 to 5'7 should be fine on a 29er. A smaller frame should also mean a less stable ride at high speeds but more playful and agile. I personally prefer a smaller frame but that is up to opinion. Same as wheel size because a 27.5 bike will perform better in terms of agility but be less stable when going fast. A 29er is better for racers and those looking to speed through chunk because you roll better and can get over big roots and rocks easier. Mullets are better for super steep stuff and being more nimble than a 29er in my opinion. You just need to decide if you want a more stable or a less stable bike.
@@nav8656 thanks very much for taking the time to respond. I’ll look for the helmet mount; any chance you know off hand brand / model? Regarding the bike and wheel sizing - I appreciate that as well; good points/ things to consider. Since lots of bikes haven’t been available, I’ve been putting more thought as to the bike I’d like to get, and the configuration. So, I appreciate your thoughts.
@@ark8tct For the helmet mount all you need is an adhesive to put on the helmet. You can then attach the camera. @@MGMAlternative the point of contact for the wheels would probably be pretty similar… but would the rolling benefit overcome the slightly slower turn in… short rear slightly steeper and taller stack front might give the best of both on dual 29. Enjoy the vids and the tech side of the discussions.
It is interesting how much of that I understood. I don't race but now I am interested in doing some testing of my own. I only ride 27.5 on my Jamis Portal but I can run 29" as well. Probably not worth the financial investment though. Thank you for you insight and explanation of your thoughts.
We are glad to help! May be worth looking into the Mullet as an upgrade from the full 27.5. But if you're already having fun then that's all that matters.
Test on a longer track? With a short track like this one maybe the negatives/positives balance out? Maybe a 5-6min track? Also, I guess you are shuttling to the trail head, to avoid tiredness to play a part on the different runs, I mean, you get tired after several runs, but avoid pedaling up.
@@MGMAlternative agree, but on a longer track you will have more conclusive results, not just 2-3s difference that could be due a small error here and there, on a longer track those errors will not have such a big impact, but that's me, I'm just a weekend warrior...and full 29er on all my bikes ;)
I’ve only owned one 29er. I hated it and bought a 27.5” bike. Loved the 27.5” much more and plan on never switching back. I’ve ridden a few new 29ers, but haven’t really liked any of them.
Is it safe to say, then, per the results of this particular comparison that neither is inherently superior to the other? I'm by no means an elite level rider but I've been at it a while, and I've done half a dozen different similar test days for 27.5 vs 29 and gotten the same results. Averaged, my times were the same. At full speed they don't really feel different, either. The 29er is noticeably better at "flattening out" a trail at moderate speeds. I have zero problem with the big wheels but I ride 27.5 simply because I'm an old bmx guy and my riding style has me tucked up behind the seat a lot and I already buzz my butt on the tire enough to make me nervous sometimes. The last thing I need is getting my crotch wedged between the tire and the frame!
More or less, yes! But having spent quite a few years on a full 29” and only this year having the opportunity to run a mullet correctly, I wanted to know how much is true to the “fun is fast.” While my times weren’t hugely different at the end of the day, the “easy” feeling on the 29” is something that could be really beneficial for racing long and rough EWS. But I’m an emotional rider and fun outweighed it all in the end and I believe I might be a mullet rider for the rest of my life!
@@dvrgntminds Wow, that's cool. Since mental/emotional state is so super important for you pros, the "fun" feeling while riding/racing might be most important! :)
I remember the words of Tracy Moseley when she said she "was faster just 2-3 sec on 29 and maybe even on some trucks could be the same or even opposite but for her it is just less fatiguing on 29 and on long truck it is the most important". And EWS it is just that don't you think?
I think I remember her saying that too. This is Jesse's reason to stick with the full 29 as he feels it is efficient. But he's never timed the setups back to back so really we don't know!
I've tried that with the stock set up (no angle set) and I felt awkward. I think because of my size on the bike it felt hard to lean over- contrary to what one would think. While the mullet in the short CS with stock head angle felt awesome! I also felt the front of my bike was long and then the rear was short. But perhaps now that I have decreased my front centre with the angle set it would be more balanced feeling. Or I could simply shut up and just ride my bike... but that doesn't sound as fun.
@@MGMAlternative LOL. No, puzzling is def more fun!! Well I know you're an "emotional" rider, like you mentioned, so I def think riding what is most fun would be best for you, because of the mental/emot state you'll race/ride in. But I'm also a huge fan of the concept of "Smooth = Fast", so hopefully the most fun setup will also be what you feel most "smooth" on, or at least real close!! :)
Did you take into consideration that your GEOMETRY is AFU by changing wheel sizes? The GEOMETRY of your 29er took decades to figure out. Ride a 2007 29er and you'll know what I'm talking about. Don't expect to simply swap wheels to make your 29er feel faster, and call it a "mullet" on top of that. F'ing casuals. 26er, 27.5er, 29er, 76er, 79er. MULLET is a bike company, but you'd never know it because you only follow Pinkbike. Funny.
For science please test reverse mullet 27.5 in the front 29 rear. You don't know it's not better. We might all be slaves to Big Bicycle's agenda. Or I just think it would be a funny video.
Are you just going downhill on your bike? Get your ass in gear and take that path in the forest the other way, from the bottom to the top. Then tell me which is better.
Enjoyed your insights and talking through your thoughts, Miranda. It would be cool to revisit this after some more time on different tracks.

Here is an example of one: www.amazon.com/MiPremium-Adhesive-Cameras-Accessories-attachment/dp/B08XQTY5BR/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=gopro+mount&qid=1629234208&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExMFlNNVJaM0FQSVU2JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUExMDI2MTE4MUoxNkFaSUI4TkpSSCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMjI5MzQ0M0s5REtYOEpDSUIxUyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
@@nav8656 thanks very much!
@@ark8tct No problem!
Very interesting, thanks for your insights !
Glad to provide!
I have no experience with a mullet but I would guess, everything else equal, that they may only be an advantage on very steep gnar downhill tracks.
This is the theory, but it needs proving.
Mullet long vs 29 short would be an interesting comparison
So many things to try!
@@MGMAlternative the point of contact for the wheels would probably be pretty similar… but would the rolling benefit overcome the slightly slower turn in… short rear slightly steeper and taller stack front might give the best of both on dual 29. Enjoy the vids and the tech side of the discussions.
Can you notice a difference when climbing with mullet? Does it climb similar to 29 or significantly worse?
hmm...29'' climbs better I think... but I would never say that the mullet is 'significantly worse'! I am the weak link in climbing not my bike.
So it seems to me like 90% of 27.5/mix/29 test videos on YT are mainly focused on speed and time difference while 90% of us don't race....
rode my old 26er dh bike at the bike park last weekend. it's def not a 27.5 trail bike
More testing needed! The same conclusions may be drawn on a longer track, but we need objective timing to figure that out!
Maybe mullet is the answer for you!
@@MGMAlternative I don’t know, I love the super playful little wheels.
Love Miranda :)
On ebike, 27.5 way more controllable. 29er a bit faster, but less control.
The only good thing about mullet 29er Front & 27.5 Rear is for you to learn how to wheelie a little easier.
I prefer a 440 rear end over a 450mm even though i run an xl 29er
New videos when???
I'm hoping you guys have time for a new video soon :-)
I remember the words of Tracy Moseley when she said she "was faster just 2-3 sec on 29 and maybe even on some trucks could be the same or even opposite but for her it is just less fatiguing on 29 and on long truck it is the most important". And EWS it is just that don't you think?
I think I remember her saying that too. This is Jesse's reason to stick with the full 29 as he feels it is efficient. But he's never timed the setups back to back so really we don't know!
Damn Miranda, you look so dialed on the bike, I wish I could ride like you!
Well thanks!
what do you mean mullet bikes dont make u go twice as fast?
Miranda, run full 29er on the short chain stays! (Well you asked.) ;)
OMG, ins't this girl the female version of Stevie Smith?
Really wasn't too see someone put them against each other on steep, tech turns
We'll have to find another track for that
I'm still trying to figure out what an "alternative" is, wrong answers only:
Dimension.
Wow interesting am I not gonna love mullet on levo Gen 3 on 29 levo now .
The video shows it's about the bike, the riders' style and the trails ridden. Still worth the experiment!
@@MGMAlternative ya agree 👍no real better bike 29 or mullet, matters on many things very cool video 😁👍
@@MGMAlternative I have been on 29 since Hightower, wolf ridge pro ,sentinel, now levo
Exactly! Nice, a good selection of bikes!
@@MGMAlternative ty 😁👍
Maybe all of us non racers should be focused on feelings and not the clock.
Nah, I like to go fast. 29er
That's a fair point! To each their own.
@@sladoid 27.5 feels faster than 29er 😅 😂
Did you take into consideration that your GEOMETRY is AFU by changing wheel sizes? The GEOMETRY of your 29er took decades to figure out. Ride a 2007 29er and you'll know what I'm talking about. Don't expect to simply swap wheels to make your 29er feel faster, and call it a "mullet" on top of that. F'ing casuals. 26er, 27.5er, 29er, 76er, 79er. MULLET is a bike company, but you'd never know it because you only follow Pinkbike. Funny.

NOICE!
For science please test reverse mullet 27.5 in the front 29 rear. You don't know it's not better. We might all be slaves to Big Bicycle's agenda.
Or I just think it would be a funny video.
GMBN did it a while back :)
Are you just going downhill on your bike? Get your ass in gear and take that path in the forest the other way, from the bottom to the top. Then tell me which is better.
Any test like this is invalid because you cant repeat your exertion effort and all the other shit that goes into riding your bike
