Hello and welcome to the channel!
I am a working bassist and bass teacher totally obsessed with bass, pedals and making unique and new sounds using the two!
You may occasionally see glimpses of synths and guitars as well but we won’t talk about that...
This channel is dedicated to my musical journey including tuition videos, original music, demos of gear I love and generally all things bass related!
Thank you

Thanks for watching! Hope this video is helpful to anyone putting together a live set. Sorry for the small technical issues with audio & crop in this one. Sadly had a couple of issues that went unnoticed while filming, but hopefully won’t detract too much from the info. Ps, ignore the t shirt fluff as well - I was building my live rig just before filming! 😂
I really appreciate your down-to-earth and honest assesment of your own creative process. You've provided excellent advice and it truly feels like it's coming from authentic experience. I enjoyed your song - it seems infused with optimism. The synths add a shimmer of positivity.
Thanks Patrick! That means a lot! It’s a video I’ve wanted to make for some time and after working on this song it just seemed like the right time. Thanks, I’m happy to have something sound more positive with this one. So I’m glad that came across. Thanks again for watching, commenting and supporting what I’m doing here for so long! Thanks Gavin
Reminds me of the music in Portal 2
Im only using a monitor + multi effect board with DI. I plug my bass to a HoTone Ampero multi effekt pedal, this have 2 DI out, one for FOH and one for my Alto TS312 FRFR monitor. Works perfect !!
That’s awesome! Sounds like a great DI rig you’ve got there! Actually very similar to the way I was running my NUX MLD preamp for my in ears & FOH last year. Worked great! Thanks for watching and commenting! Thanks Gavin
You know when you eat one of those liqueur cherry chocolates. You bite them and then "bang!" it all kicks in from all directions. That's this video. Replace "musician" with "artist" or "creator" and everything you say Gavin still applies. I felt like you were speaking directly into my own journey, inspirational words, powerful words. I have lost my way with "the inner loop" not for the sake of creating things but for the joy of talking about them. So the question for you. How do you get over that last huge hurdle of making a project alive? The 80% of the work that only delivers 20%. The track has no name but it is you 100%. If it had words it would be a love song for sure.... The love of creating, the love of moving, the love of life in its richness. A hymn to where ideas tumble from and joyous thanks for their ebb and flow over our lives. Why sing, when your fretless is your voice over so many octaves.
Thank you Martin, that is very kind. It is something I’ve had to learn the hard way so hopefully the video can be useful to someone else going through the same journey like you said. As for your question, that’s actually a very good one - maybe one to consider properly for a video! But what I can tell you for now is that I too have gone through spells where the joy isn’t there. In fact, after releasing my latest album and all the planning and prep that went into the launch and the launch gig, I was really burned out. So I actually just took a break. I still did lessons but I literally didn’t take my 2 fretless basses form the gig out of their hardcases for 2 weeks! The idea of that in the past would have really got to me, fearing I just didn’t love it anymore. But time away, spending time with friends and doing other things really reset everything and when I did come back to the bass it was right back to the fun and excitement that I had before. Sometimes a break is good. But also even just taking a different spin on things can reignite the excitement for projects. This new live takes dawless EP is so different for me that I am always excited to get going on the next song! Which being honest, was also something I had taken a break from after the album launch. I hope this helps, and a full video on this may be on the works now as it’s really got me thinking. Thanks for the question! And thank you for the very kind words about the song. I’ve wanted to rework this one for some time but didn’t want to mess it up. But I really feel happy with this one. And the new way of recording has brought new exciting challenges that are making these songs really fun to record. So the kind response really means a lot. Thanks again for watching, commenting and for your continued support. I really appreciate it. Thanks again Gavin
Eden's WTDI is a great tool. The enhance and one-knob compression does a great job considering the tiny foot print. My only gripe has been that quite often I have a 60Hz buzz, regardless of whether the ground lift is on or off.
Yeah it does sound great doesn’t it! Ah I see, that I don’t have with mine sadly. It could be worth getting that looked at, but first I would check other locations in your rig (power supply to other pedals if any, other connections in rig etc) even just going bass directly into the Eden yo see if it goes away. Sadly ground loops and other general hums & noise can manifest in the most weird ways! I only recently learned that midi can even cause ground loops! Worst case of it is the pedal, talk to the shop where you got it if it’s under warranty or see a qualified tech. It may not always be the cheapest route - but they will keep you right. Hope that helps and I hope you can find the cause of the issue without too much hassle. Thanks for watching and commenting! Thanks Gavin
@@gavinforbesmusic5164 Thanks, I really appreciate your reply. I'll organise myself to get a tech to look at this.
Great video mate and thanks from South Australia. Basically I'm a die-hard 4 string P bass nut but I am very fortunate to have an amazing missus who wanted to support my habit of bass playing and expanding my expressiveness in bass, that she bought me a lovely Cort A6 just because I wanted to find out what I could achieve with it. What it allows, encourages for me, is thinking differently in terms of what I can add to a tune. By this I mean I now have the ability, for one example, to strum power chords using that C string to 'fatten' up the whole sound of a smaller group with perhaps only one guitarist. The ability to work across the fretboard seems to also give me flexibility to experiment, dare I say improvise, with basslines again to enhance the sound of a smaller group. I can't say it definitely does do this but it certainly feels like it to me. With regards to muting, I address that in a couple of ways. Primarily, my right hand (plucking) technique is something like Steve Harris from Iron Maiden where I don't anchor my right hand with my thumb, rather the heel of my right hand. This gives a really mobile floating thumb availability when crossing the strings that I have managed to incorporate into the right-hand part of my muting which helps to dampen any sympathetic string vibration. I also use a string wrap (this might upset the purists, but I need all the help I can get) at the other end of, particularly, the B string because I can!! All in all I have found a decent result doing this and ironically I think the muting 'problem' is actually an advantage of the six string, it makes you more conscious and mindful of the requirement. I am really only a very rank amateur but these things do help me in adapting between my 4 string, 5 string Yamaha and the 6 string and each of these brings different feeling when I'm playing. I like it a lot.
That’s awesome! And have to say I’m a massive fan of Cort basses! My main fretless is one of their new ones and love it! And love the muting concept, I’ll give that a try! Totally agree with the advantages you mentioned, so versatile and creative. Sounds like a great set up you have! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it! Also sorry for the delayed response, haven’t been on here over last couple of weeks. Thanks again Gavin
So much in one year Gavin. This is such an interesting video. Just to look back at the road you travelled. We should all take stock every now and then. Sometimes the flood of ideas swamps the completion process. Patrick and I compiled another book in September, some of the learning from this ripple with yours. Collaboration Delegation Finishing getting over the difficulties and disappointments the hard work that seemingly moves a project only by millimetres and the total joy of creating and promoting something. Gavin a gigantic year and it looks like next year will be even bigger. I really enjoyed hearing your story. I really enjoy your journey. Thank you for everything you do.
Thank you Martin, that really does mean a lot. Especially since you’ve been along for so much of this journey that really started to take shape over the lockdown - it’s so crazy to think of how much has changed since then. That’s awesome, please let me know how that process continues and when it’s out! You’re so right, the journey can be so difficult with times where it feels like you never take a step forward. But it’s so worth it for the love of it and the end result in whatever form it takes. Thank you and for all your support and kind words. It really does mean so much! Thanks again Gavin!
Just get a C4.
Or a Future Impact. It’s like a C4 but sounds a lot better.
Really great video again mate. What did I learn this year? I learned actually the sometimes good enough is exactly that good enough. Just because we can edit and edit and edit...but actually....sometimes just finishing the track is better than not at all. I also learned that the Digitone II might be the best groovebox I've ever used. I learned that I am now obsessed with pedals. I also recognised that not everyone gets to or can make music from the blank page and that is actually a pretty special realisation. Think about it? Before you wrote that melody, or before you published that album...NONE OF IT EXISTED BEFORE and it came from you. Absolute magic!
Thanks bud! And those are some great points you’ve made there! Especially the one about things being good enough. That’s one I am learning myself and embracing with the new mixed only recordings. And that’s a fantastic point about nothing existing before we make it. Hadn’t considered that! And have heard great things about the digitone II - may have to check that out! Thanks again for watching and commenting bud! Is much appreciated!
What’s a PA ?
Good question. In this context PA means public address system. It’s the sound system in the concert venue. So effectively these preamp/ DI boxes allow you to plug directly into the sound system without needing an amp. Hope that helps. Also sorry for the delayed response - only just seen this comment. Thanks again for commenting and watching . Thanks Gavin
@ 🙏🏼
Thank you for sharing your reflections. Your spirit of curiosity, enthusiasm and introspection are evident in this video. It really sounds like you had a great year!
Thank you for the kind words and for watching and commenting! It was certainly an interesting one that I’ve learned a lot from. And has opened some exciting doors for 2025 too which I’m looking forward to exploring. Thanks again!
Hi Gavin, I really enjoyed this video (which I listened to on my morning walk today). There are some really good insights which are probably worthwhile noting for any artist, especially: using the KISS principle when designing your setup. I love how you keep combining the bass with the sounds of the AE. It's all very inspiring so please keep up the good work!
Thank you Carsten! That really means a lot. You’re so right, the KISS principle is really valuable! Learned that the hard way myself, but was certainly a valuable lesson for me. Thank you, honestly it’s becoming my go to pairing. Love the way they can combine and the possibilities seem endless. Even more so with all the new modules coming out. And honestly, I wouldn’t be doing this without your amazing videos on the AE format! I have learned so much from those! Thanks again, your support is really appreciated! Thanks Gavin
when using my amp I run my Di into the effects return, just utilizing my amps power section and avoiding tone redundancy and I have the option of xlr out from pedal or amp to the board.
How did I miss this video? We all know the bass player is important in a band. They do something around the drums and if they don't do it the sound will be sort of not right. This is all about what that bassline is. And how it can stand alone. Or maybe this is about that fretless voice. The living oscillator at the front of the chain. Gavin you look like you really worked hard and it really speaks for itself. 41Hz live. I love this track so much but had no idea how hard it looks to play.
Don’t worry about it, I have missed loads on here myself! That is a great description of what the bass can do, and I really appreciate the kind words about the bassline on 41 hertz. Live that term “living oscillator” - especially with how I’ll be processing the bass next year! It’s interesting actually ( at least to me haha) but 41Hertz probably too the most work to translate the original to the new electronic duo set. The original bass was actually 2 different layers. One clean slap for the low notes and one high up with effects for the melody. Combining the two was tricky but also so much fun to figure out. It’s now one of my favourites to play live! The hardest part believe it or not is controlling the wah pedal. Making it sound melodic while playing - I’m learning! Haha Thanks again for your very kind comment and your continued support. It means so much! Thanks Gavin
Nice run-through, interesting to hear how you use the system! First track in the intro, the synth arpeggio reminded me of Frankie Knuckles - Your Love (or Animal Collective's interpolation of it in 'My Girls'), cool stuff! Fun to see the live footage inbetween :D
Thanks Zeno! I really appreciate that. I’ve actually not heard that one, but I’ll definitely give it a listen! The new rig for next year will be a progression of this one, with plenty space for other stuff, hopefully including BF synth in the not too distant future! Thanks again for watching and commenting!
Hi Gavin, thank you for this very informative and detailed run-down of your AE Modular live rig! I love the new album and the way you've managed to combine the AE with all the other instruments. It's such a great example what can be done with this little system.
Thank you Carsten, that really means a lot! Especially from someone so important to the AE world. There are other users doing way more elaborate things with this system, but have to say this works so perfectly for my set up, there’s just no way I could imagine playing live without it. It’s perfect! And even then, there’s so much more I want to explore with it as well. Thanks again for your support, and for all your videos which helped when developing my rack. Thanks again Gavin
Gavin. Thank you for explaining your AE modular to us. This was so understandable and it just makes sense of all the individual parts you have been talking about. With modular comes enormous freedom. I guess its also freedom to buy too many modules and waste precious time tinkering. I think you have the self discipline and the direction to avoid these pitfalls. I always joke that an IT nerd like me would never be able to fill a stadium show with a demonstration of an operating system patch resolving some vulnerability in the name resolution services. Your whole setup and migration from a bassist that likes an effect or two into a modular and midi enthusiast has been organic and is absolutely fascinating. But the crowd just want to hear some great music, kind of a shame that people aren't particularly curious about the "how" of things. I don't think that whilst you have strap over your shoulder and VANS on your feet you can ever do away with tapping on a pedal whilst standing on a stage. ( I just had to watch Hendrix playing Voodo Child and he didn't have many pedals but he sure used them to great sonic and dramatic effect) But it does make real sense to compress the pedals into a modular format. Great vid as ever. Thanks for sharing. (When I run out of my own projects I would love to dip my toe into this world....)
Thanks for the kind words Martin, I really appreciate it. And I’m glad it was interesting. You’re right, it brings so much freedom. Even with programmed sequences, there’s still so much room to improvise. I’m sure there is an audience for that! It’s interesting, you’re so right that most people don’t notice (or care) how the sounds are made. What has blown my mind is that there are people, even local to me, who are interested in seeing what is used on stage and care about the gear side. Was a pleasant surprise! And you are so right, there is no chance I’ll ever retire the pedals - or foot control. Even for the modular effects, I’ll be using a midi foot controller/ expression pedals to switch and control the modular chain. Thanks again for your constant support. It means so much! Thanks again Gavin
Interesting to hear how you use the Ae. Adding the Grunge/phaser/delay to the bass FX will sound cool Out of interest what noise gate do you use? I'm using an inline audio loop noise gate cheap as chips but think it takes away some of the good noise too so looking to try others.
Thanks! Have to say though, nothing compared to your set up! So cool! Yeah think the bass rack is gonna take over the pedalboard a little! Haha plus with the new Wonkystuff Ring mod, plus some other things I’ve noticed from tangible waves & other third parties too (BF synths in particular) - so much this rack could do for my bass rig! Oh really? Well despite that, your videos always sound great! But I understand your point, some can clamp your sound more than others and remove detail in the process. I’ve been using the Boss NS2, but I’ll be honest it’s not the best. There are other noise gate pedals way better these days. So I’ll also be investigating that - including a potential rack option. So I’ll keep you posted when I do. I will say, the big difference I’ve noticed is trying the separate outputs. Even just using the stock Ableton gate on seperate outputs from the AE worked way better as the gate can track the audio better with just one source. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it! Thanks Gavin
@gavinforbesmusic5164 thanks Gavin appreciate you saying that and about the vids too. For those I use audacity to take out the noise and don't use the inline filter. Live is a different story though. By the way it's really cool how you include the Ae in your live gigs. Have been wondering how this was done and what you used so it was cool to see your explanation. I'll check out that noise gate filter you mentioned even if to compare to those in the local shop. Good tip about the individual outs too. I will try that out as well thanks mate I look forward to more vids and enjoy building the bass rig, like you say so much to choose from now it's so good and imagine what's next 🤯🙂
Ah I see, sounds great! Thank you, that really means a lot. It’s certainly not as elaborate as how some of the other AE users set theirs up, but I honestly couldn’t imagine not having this as the third band member now! Oh for the noise gate, check out the noise gate pedal shoot out Ryan Bruce / fluff did. Both of mine are in it ( the TC electronic iron curtain and Boss ones) and you’ll see how they sound. The sentry seems amazing but not tried one! I have a DBX rack one I’ll hopefully check out soon too. So I’ll keep you posted. Thanks! Started this week and it’s a lot of fun even at this stage. Working on the midi foot controlling next week which will be fun. Feel free to suggest anything you can think of! Thanks again, can’t wait to see what you do next! Thank Gavin
@gavinforbesmusic5164 cheers mate I'll check out that review. The midi foot controller sounds interesting. I know a local maker near me Elk Electronik makes a Midi Mute controller foot switch which is pretty cool. I like how Ae can be set up as simple or complicated as you want and it's all great I reckon
@maydonpoliris no worries! Ah nice, I’ll check them out, thanks for the info! Yeah you’re so right, this system can literally be anything you want it to be. That’s the great thing! Thanks again bud!
i dont think youre a bassist, no salt, you just dont play it like you love it, you seem a bit uncomfortable on it, maybe youre more experienced as synth player
it doesn't out do the c4 synth pedal
Strong regular show vibes haha, well when I get a bass I'll def be gettin this pedal w it!
regular show is surface level reference c4 synth pedal is a better end game synth pedal, get a selector pedal to scroll the c4 presets you end up making
I get your point but to me they are very much different pedals for different things. Synth bass is a broad scope of sounds. This is more glitchy 8 bit. No presets but arguably more of an on the fly “performative” pedal. Much more experimental. The C4 on the other hand is massively powerful pedal and definitely a full on synth pedal. Just depends on the sound you’re after.
I appreciate the careful ear fellas! The subtle/non subtle differences w the pedals(effects) is what makes us so spoiled to all these amazing options doesn't it?
Man your accent is the best man damn. That’s great love it. Irish? Or Scot
Thanks bud! I’m Scottish. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I love the melodies in this song! So many hooks and crisp synth sounds to savor!
Thanks Patrick! That really means a lot. It’s one of my favourite tracks on the new album so I’m glad to hear you like it too. Thanks again!
Sounding great Gav!
Thanks! Is much appreciated!
Oh my! That was absolutely sweet. To see that black sticky bass in action was an utter treat. I can feel the energy pouring off the stage.
Thank you Martin! That means a lot. It was so much fun to play that show, and have to say everything came together great with the light and visuals. Thanks again for your work on the visuals! Looks great! Thanks again Gavin
You made a video about synth bass.
Gavin....Thanks for putting this together. You have really opened my eyes to the Wonkystuff gear. I feel like the middle aged biker that thinks they might just get a 600 into the garage without the wife noticing. Next year I am coming along, just for the sheer fun of twisting some knobs. My daughter is a teacher, the accessible guitar has really impressed her. This section of the video is so important, enabling everyone to take part and removing barriers, cant thank those guys enough for going down that route.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. That’s such a great analogy if the Wonkystuff modules & the AE format in general. A modular that is so affordable and attainable to the masses. That’s what drew me to it and now it’s safe to say I’m hooked! You would love the event! I’m sure the creativity of the builders alone would be inspiring! And then there’s the seminars too! That’s such a great idea isn’t it! I was so impressed with the accessibility of that instrument. You’re so right, it’s very important, and I’m so glad to see it happening at arcana! Thanks again for watching, commenting and for your constant support. Thanks Gavin
Great video mate
Thanks bud! You should defo go next time- you’ll love it! Thanks again!
Great video and presentation Gavin mate
Thanks Gareth! That means a lot. Hope you’re well! We defo need a catch up again soon! Thanks again bud.
Love the depth of the content, passionate delivery and honest as always@@gavinforbesmusic5164
Thanks. I’ll be honest, this one has been a bit of a challenge to get over the finish line with the various technical issues. All of which due to me still learning this video side of things. But it’s been fun learning and progressing, so that really does mean a lot hearing that. Thank you
Thanks for the interview!
No worries, thank you so much for giving me a great demo of what you’ve been working on! These Midi modules really are impressive! It’s great to see the progression of midi for the AE. Thanks again for the demo and for taking the time to chat at the booth!
Thanks for watching my recap of this years Synthfest! I must apologies, It is a noisy and very busy event, so the audio isn't perfect and neither is my filming at times (a few heads chopped). Add into that some more issues (audio issues with my talking parts in particular), this video has been rather tricky to get ready quickly. It's far from perfect, but I hope you enjoy my recap! Thanks for watching!
Loving the Blend of style and sound❤ 🔥 subscribed ✨️
Thank you! I really appreciate that. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching, subbing and for commenting. 👍 Thanks Gavin
This sounds great! I can only imagine how it felt to be in the auduence, listening through some nice big speakers. Your music is so distinctive and inventive. Congratulations on such a super show. I am eager to see part 2!
Thank you Patrick! It was so much fun to play this show and the response has been very positive. That really means a lot, especially coming from a fellow musician and synth player. Thanks again for your support, it means so much. Thanks!
From the guy discussing pedals to this. Gavin you really have done the hard and careful work and look how far it has taken you. You need to write a song called "Trajectory" because yours is heading for the stars! Thank you for sharing this video of your performance,; and Dad what a rock, actually the whole team. I guess you did some chatty bits in between the songs? I so enjoyed seeing you playing these tracks live it's awesome to see you in action.
I agree with this comment so much! Am I mistaken in believing that you created the animations for this show? They are totally unique and add a lot to the presentation.
@@pbartmess I did some yes! I spammed Gavin with a whole load of stuff off my hard drive and he did the hard work of editing and choosing the best matches. I am scratching my head over the "shooting white cubes" one I completely forget the algorithm now.
@@loopinnerthe Oh yes, I should have watched all the way to the end before commenting - I see your name in the credits. It must be fun seeing the designs blown up on a huge screen like that!
Thank you so much Martin. You’ve been here since day one of the TH-cam channel I think, so that really means a lot coming from yourself. You’re right, he was awesome on Keys! And mum stepped up and rocked the light shoe last minute too which was awesome! Yeah some chat although it didn’t come out well of the camera sadly. Your videos came out fantastic and really helped bring it all together. Thanks again Martin, I really do appreciate your help and your constant support. Thanks again!
Great opening! Mad light show. Cassette Futurism my favorite.
That sticky bass... got to love it and respect to the man that can actually make it sing so sweetly.
Thanks Ant! That means a lot. The lights and visuals were a combo of Martin Parker, Andy Forbes and Lucy Forbes stepping up last minute to run the light show. The dream team there! Thanks again!
Thanks Martin! Appreciate the kind words.
I thought you were saying gremlin. Ground loop. Ha
😂 to be fair, I do use that term a lot while dealing with tech issues. So between that and my Scottish accent, you weren’t far off! Haha thanks for watching.
Great video...I was wondering what these things were for
Thanks for the knowledge. although I don't have any padel effect, that you use it.😂
i like how the bass is the main instrument in your music, very nice!
Thank you! That means a lot. Even on the new album that just came out, the AE Modular plays a massive role (all drums plus a lot of the synth parts). But the bass is still a massive part of it for me. It feels live the vocal for me - really it is my voice. I love the way the bass and modular/ synths pair up. Thank you again for your kind comment. Gavin
I am going to edit this comment more as I spot stuff. The first two tracks are so familiar to me because I made video for them and listened to them many times..and Blockbuster too. The title track is a driving 80's cop movie all over. It's the theme tune Juliet Bravo should have had. How can anyone argue with that slide bass on Cassette Futurism? I think this is still my favorite track at the moment. Age of the Arcade - Do I hear fingers sliding over wire-wound strings? It's so human vs the modular. 79 Blueprint there is a intoxicating drone working away in the background and I only just noticed it. Freeze frame ending has those wonderful choral sounds but I think it needs some vocoder action, if nothing else just doing a count-down. Gavin you have worked so hard on this album, it is packed with treats that I haven't discovered yet. I hope this gets to the ears that really need to hear it.
Thanks for the comment Martin! That’s very true about the three singles, and you did such great videos too! Thanks again for those. It’s funny, I think cassette futurism is probably my favourite too, especially happy with the live version we ended up playing. I’m so glad you caught that on Age of the arcade! In the past I would have cut the string squeaks but I wanted to leave the human imperfections this time where I could. 79 is a different one for me, although it’s a special one. It was written as a tribute to Paul Gardiner, Gary Numans original bass player, a member of Tubeway Army. His playing influenced me more than I could ever really say, so I wanted to do a tribute to that tone and style. Not a numan clone, but for Paul. In fact I almost called it “For Paul”. Freeze Frame was a change of pace for me too. I went for minimal where I could, but I do find your vocoder idea very interesting. Especially as ideas for the next project have started and one of them includes the vocoder! Hopefully you’ll like what I have in mind for that. Thanks again for your amazing support. It really does mean so much to me. Thanks again Gavin
Really informative thanks
No worries, glad it was useful. Thank you for watching!
The camera man and van driver was absolutely brilliant that night....😉
He was indeed! Honestly we couldn’t have done that show or the other show last year without him! Thanks again!
I own both a P Bass and a J Bass atm, but they're both using roundwound strings. Overall, I'm very impressed on how much treble the J bass was able retain despite having flats on it. I actually really liked how gritty is still sounded when using a pick and some drive. That's personally super important to me, since I play a bit more aggressively. Both of them sounded the same to me when using fuzz though, but I think that's just how fuzz is a lot of the time haha. Great job, man!
Ah nice one, glad you enjoyed it. I too was surprised how much I like a jazz with flats. It’s always the P with flats thing people talk about - but the jazz can be just as cool! Yeah on video the fuzz was similar, but in person I can confirm that fuzz is usually a little smoother on flats. More synthy. Depends on the fuzz & rig though. But generally that’s how it feels to me. Thanks again for watching and commenting!
I Was in love with flatwounds... until i tried them
Yeah while I do love them, they are definitely an acquired taste and not ideal for everything. Thanks for commenting.
A good reason...i can't play with other fingers though i would like It ..
Hey, we all have our strengths and preferences. As long as it works and is fun for you, do your thing! 👍 thanks for commenting!
Just another tool in the toolbox when called for. Most gigs where other people are paying you to play won’t require it or even want it, but if you’re making your own music and it’s what you need to express yourself then go for it. I have one but very rarely play it for pay and prefer my 4 string as my hands get fatigued on it after a while. You are right about proper muting. That’s a big difference you’ll encounter. Big hands also help. I don’t have those! 😂
You have nailed it! Had to be the right tool for the right gig. Sadly I actually sold that bass but I find the same principle applies to my high C five string & fretless basses. And I also have the same issue, small hands do make it more difficult! 😂 thanks for watching and commenting!
To me I was surprised to hear that the J seemed to be stronger in the lows and the P had more punch in the mids. Why is that? I would have expected the opposite 🤔
Good question. All of this will vary slightly with different pick ups etc, but all the clips used the same signal path, settings etc. My personal take aways are that I like the mid punch of the p bass - is personally one of the things I love about P basses on the rare occasions I play them. But for me the thick and slightly mid scooped sound of a jazz is my comfort zone. Not perfect for everything, but I like it. I like the way you have described what you heard though, and have to say I agree. I expected the mid punch of the P but the fullness of a jazz with them was a pleasant surprise. Maybe different brands pick ups would be different though… Thanks for watching and commenting! Thanks Gavin
the thumbs are so much easier! I dont care if its a "bad habit", if i can play the songs I want with it, im doing it!
Go for it! Always go with whats comfortable and fun for you as a player. Plus it definitely has some great sounds - and if it’s good enough for all the great session guys, it’s good enough for me! Thanks for commenting.
Can’t wait for the gig in August! 👊😊👍
Thanks! Me too! Got a lot of fun stuff in the works for it - some things that realistically we may not do again, at least for a long time!
