Old Locomotive Gets Reconditioned
It's barely alive...Can we rebuild it? Do we have the technology to make it better, stronger, faster?
As near as I can tell, this is a Minitrix model 2080, 0-6-0 locomotive.

Model Updates - Some old business, Some new business...
Some good content on these videos. Hope to see you make some more and see how your new layout is coming along.
I have 4 BLIho scale steam engines I've had trouble with 3 out of the 4 . My 484 D& H I've sent back once and it never ran correct since Ive had it . My ATLA/KATO n scale enigma have always run good. My best n scale enigma is a bachman steam engine runs very quite and runs very smooth. Il never buy another BLI engine
Great video thanks for the step by step and with a smile aswell. Look forward to building my own soon
Thanks for watching!
I appreciate your telling me that the height was now correct. I would have preferred a side view of the coupler. "Trust but verify". Ronald Reagan
Very informative video on both the Kato & Broadway Limited ES44 locomotives. I will at a future date by buying the Kato ES44 locomotive for my freight roster on my model railroad. My N scale model railroad 9 out of 12 locomotives are Kato. I’m satisified with Kato.
need to do one loco but need micro couplers 2003-1 but in the UK,
I've always just used a razor saw and have sawed the post off then just used MT post into the remaining hole.
come out come out where ever you are.. hope all is well
Looks really good!
Thank you!
I too have found that all sixteen of my Kato diesels run great right from the first. They will creep along at extremely slow speed all day long, rarely if ever stalling. My two Scale trains engines hum and whine as if trying to move, then lurch forward as I dial up speed. I really wish I could brag about American design and manufacturing but I'm afraid that Mr. KATO has us beat . I only run DC ... any suggestions ?
You could use JMRI to look at the CVs on the misbehaving locomotives and see if the slow speeds can be fine-tuned.
NRA shirt got my sub. Try NAGR instead.
The Kato details on the bottom seem to be made of plastic but for the broadway limited does bottom contain a metal detail or just painted like metal?
The BLI has plastic and metal on the bottom, and the trucks are mostly made of plastic. It has actual wires for brake lines, however.
I love the video, I am a newb to the hobby. I am wondering how you knew the BLi would work on your track? I have a Kato track which is code 80. Was wondering how you knew it would work and if you know exactly what your train is coded to? How do I know which non Kato brand trains will work on my Kato track?
An N scale locomotive should actually work on any N scale track, the spacing between the rails should be the same. I have had situations where even a Kato locomotive didn't fit between the Kato rails quite right, but it's easy to pull or push the loco wheels to fit.
Ah Brian, what it is to waste time on Utube. Anyway, channels like yours are a help for those of us who are looking for the least painful methods of track laying. I wonder if folk are being to 'literalistic' with their interpretation of set geometry track. They are an aid, not a prescription. Bear in mind I am the kind of nuisance who could buy an etched metal kit and respecify half of it - I suspect the approach most kit designers would approve of. Thinking a lot recently lately of home made transition for easing into and out of set geometry curves, and in your case here, a piece of home made for that difficulty you had. Of course most of these things could be made in a few minutes from appropriate rail sized flex track. There you are: the advantages of set geormetry track with fewer of the usual disadvantages. Incidentally, that 'Hart' rotor tool. Bought a 'Harp' points file for just a few dollars. Points files are great for preparing rail ends so as not to catch wheels. Enjoyed video; thanks for the effort.
Thanks for watching! My videos aren't so much "how to" as they are "what happened..."
I have a new KATO GE P42 and I have used the 2004-1 MT couplers with the KATO clip. hight was right on.
Very nice!
I just completed an HO scale build of the Walthers Cornerstone chicken coops and farm buildings and waited until I finished the assembly to hand paint the buildings. That was a learning experience and now I've changed and will paint the parts while still attached to the sprues which will be beneficial with windows & doors. After much cussing and swearing I finally completed the building of a Tichy Train Group flatcar. I followed the directions to the tee and wish I hadn't. After installing the stirrups in a previous step and while installing the extra added bronze phosphor wire grab irons, I broke every one of the stirrups off. If you ever build this kit install the stirrups as the very LAST step! I did make some stirrups out of staples from a desktop stapler that were the correct size for HO scale. I think I spent as much time chasing small parts across the floor as I did assembling the model, LOL! After completing the build with all the fiddly brake details on the bottom (which no one will ever see) I painted the under frame rail brown with my airbrush. I then painted each board on the deck with a different shade of brown to grey-brown mixing the acrylic paint in small plastic communion cups as I went along. It came out looking very realistic. Cheers from eastern TN
Wonderful reviews. I am gonna be new to this hobby. Looks like BL is not a bad brand details look Wonderful
Yes, the details are great, but the locomotive would have been much better if it had run correctly out of the box. It took a lot of work to get it functional, and it should have run right for the price.
Wanted to ask you most all Broadway limited especially that line and size of locomotive has sun shades kato doesn't have sun shades but all Broadway limiteds do Where's yours..??
I own the Kato and it has been excellent except my only issue is the couplers are often difficult to attach my rolling stock. I also have a kato 70 ACe that runs great but couplers are not quite as touchy. I do intend to replace the couplers for both with the kaydee couplers. I also wish to upgrade my Kato locomotives to DCC. I’ve purchased several other Atlas locomotives and my Kato performance is superior to the Atlas.
Got Kato at a good deal it runs better wouldn’t waste bucks on broadway limited
Agreed!
@@brianpagemodeltrainsif you have a preference on accuracy which one wins
I really like the turnouts, but would like to do that same concept but do this in DC. Would this still be possible in DC to park engines and pull them out individually like you have them stored ?
I think anything is possible, but you'd probably be dealing with a lot of power feeds and isolators to make that work, not to mention you would only control one locomotive at a time (with one throttle).
Nice Video! Thank you for the humor and taking the time to show how to install couplers on a classic caboose.
Thanks for watching!
I must have lucked out I have the Norfolk Southern version of the Broadway limited and it's been great. Crawls along smooth I also have the kato equivalent and both are close but I do think the Broadway limited has a little better detail in my opinion.
Thanks for the video. I was able to use 1015-1 couplers without any need to shim. I did have to cut the hole a bit larger and use a screw just like you did. Lines up perfectly.
Wonderful video. It helped me install the MT couplers on my Atlas GP40-2. No screw or shim was required. I had purchased the small tap from the hobby shop; didn’t need it!
Glad it helped!
who makes broadway limited
Broadway Limited Imports is their own company, but I've heard that all their train equipment is made in China.
My ESU Cab Control is in a large scale battery car. The DCC "track" is just a pair of wires running to the decoder in the engine. This tip will let me reach the decoder from JMRI with out opening the battery car!
No sure what you mean by "battery car", but I'm glad it helped!
On my large scale garden railroad the tracks are not electrified. Power to the locomotive and decoder come from a following car with battery. @@brianpagemodeltrains
They should all come with phillips head screws
I burned out the engine of this locomotive, where can I find the spare part?
You should probably contact the manufacturer.
Hi Brian. I just ran across this video today. I'm interested in your No-Ox experience after 2 years. I did need to clean my track after 2 years and reapply the No-Ox, but my basement is pretty dusty and I hadn't run trains in months when I did. I'm still sold on the No-Ox after 3 years.
Ron, thanks for the shirt - I was thrilled to meet you at the train show. The No-Ox works great, but I think I'm in the same boat, my track needs another cleaning and No-Ox application. After putting a very light coating of the No-Ox on the track, even my picky locomotives work better, so I'm still a big fan of the no abrasives and No-Ox method.
@@brianpagemodeltrains Yes, I think for most folks the tracks will still need cleaning and reapplication occasionally. 2 years is FAR better than the every other week I was cleaning before, and as you say, trains just run better with the No-Ox. 👍🏼👍🏼
Who came here from the meme
I found the video informative. I would like to know if the other parts could be used without modifications? I’ve never thought it a good idea trying to make something fit that really wasn’t designed to be. Cheers!
I think you're right, if I had purchased the correct couplers, I wouldn't have had any problems like that. But I went ahead and used what I had on hand - Probably not the best idea. On the plus side, the couplers came out at the correct height, so I was happy with that.
Where the heck is your sun shades on the Broadway Limited.?
What am I watching
Huh... ..?

And don't forget and scale most important cool to have is your glasses
In the words of Joe Biden come on man no jokes do a good video
Nice job, I have rebuilt several of my N Scale cars and locomotives.
Thanks! It was fun.
Another awesome video Brian. Excellent ideas.
Thank you, Bob! The teleprompter is a great help to me.
Cool solution Brian, thanks for sharing. Good to see ya!
Thanks, John, it works for me!
Great job, Brian. It runs like a top. Take care. Sean.
Thanks Sean!
A lot of great work. Trix is now the N-scale (Mini-Trix) and DC version of my Märklin stuff. But it is only the last 20-30 years. For decades before that, TRIX was its own company in Germany, and quite well-respected, but inconsistent sales from what I understand. You did a nice job bringing it back to life!
Thanks Anthony. We bought this locomotive just for the way it looked, but I did some digging and found that Trix was owned by May-air-klin (I don't know how to make the fancy "a" with dots). I still don't know how old it is, but it's well built.
Nicely done Brian!! HO scale steamers are bad enough. I do have 1 4-4-0 in N scale....hate messing with that!
Thanks Ray - Yeah, I have to wear magnifiers to work on these things!
Great job Brian.
Thanks Rick!
Great job Brian. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Other than missing the top of the smoke stack it looks and runs real nice
Thanks Joe! I've looked at some pictures of these locomotives for sale, and I haven't seen a top on one of them yet.
