Brisbane Lions | R10 2001 vs Essendon - "If it bleeds, we can kill it."
20 years ago today: June 2, 2001 - first of what resulted in 16 straight wins on way to 2001 flag. Against the defending premiers, no less. Widely agreed that the dynasty was born on this particular Saturday evening. Leigh's famous line highlighted by Ch7 in pregame. Final score 15.12.102 to 10.14.74 (Lions also beat reigning premiers 102-74 in R10 of this year, too).

R11 1993 - Brisbane vs. St. Kilda | Full Hail Sequence
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
From Waverley: the original Channel 7 broadcast of the period in the second quarter when hail bombarded the playing surface. An edited replay of the game aired late-afternoon but did not show the conditions with the exception of the Peos goal. Interesting to note in retrospect how quick it went from light rain to full-fledged hail. Courtesy: Ch7

For Bears supporters, this felt like a big deal at the time. We needed something to feel good about. And much like the 1995 final versus Carlton, it was a bonus to have the rare backing from a large group of Victoria fans. All goals included plus some post-game. Direct transfer from my original VHS.

Hard to believe for years we couldn't win in Melbourne. Beat the eventual premiers in this one, on a shocking windy, blustery Sunday arvo at Princes Park. The Bears beat North twice in the H&A season that year, but lost the Prelim at the MCG without Voss and Akermanis. In fact, we entered R22 on top, but a bad loss to 11th-placed Collingwood and wins to Sydney and NM bumped us to third. Top spo...

Shaun Hart | Facial Injury - 2004 Preliminary Final
มุมมอง 8K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Breaks your heart no pun intended. Shaun Hart gets both cheekbones and his nose broken in this sickening collision with teammate Daniel Bradshaw in the third quarter of the 2004 Preliminary Final. He was taken from the field, missed the following week's Grand Final and 12 days later, following a discussion with Leigh Matthews, announced his retirement. A wonderful servant of the Bears and Lions...

Lots made historically of the scheduling and location of this particular Preliminary Final and the repercussions the following week but let's be honest: this game took a lot out of us. Shaun Hart with multiple fractures in his face; Browny broke a bone in the kneecap area; and both Vossy and Lukey Power copped heavy head knocks. All four incidents included in this recap. But alas, we were also ...

Aka's coming out party: 6 goals even though he only played the game's last 2.5 quarters (came on mid-2Q with the Bears down 4 goals). Vossy 32 possessions and 4 goals. Leppa 3 goals. So that's 13 goals from red-heads. I'm not the only one who noticed the hair colour listen for Peter McKenna's frequent red-head references. It was effectively a 12-goal turnaround in just over 2 quarters; the Bear...

Win number 15 in a row and now a date with destiny. No Lynch (suspension), so Leigh jumbled the forward line all night including Vossy and Chris Scott at times at full forward. No matter. Dominant display in front of the home folks a 68-point win over the Tigers and the fairytale season had one chapter left to write. Courtesy: Ch7 via Fox Footy

The first quarter from heaven in the Fitzroy Heritage jumper. 8 goals to 1 as the Lions gained the physical and emotional advantage, and were never truly threatened after. There were stretches in the 1Q where it felt like Browny was the only player on the ground he just dominated. Fun game. Courtesy: Ch10 via Fox Footy

The injury broken ribs that led to the most famous fitness test in Brisbane Lions history. Lappin cops a knee from Shaun Hart in the last quarter of the preliminary final versus Sydney and is immediately taken from the field. Gut check time in Sydney with the dynasty on the line. Brisbane controlled the first 2.5 quarters, but the Swans kicked the last 4 of the 3Q and had all the momentum at home. What resulted was 6.6 to 0.1 in the last quarter as the Lions in particular Pikey and Browny put their will on the Swans and just refused to quit. When I saw Pikey having a dart on his own on a balcony at the Brisbane Conv...

Sabonis would've been a top 25 all time NBA player for sure, probably even better, if he would've come over in his prime. Tall, skilled, strong, great shooter and passer. rebounded well. blocked shots. I mean, what else would you want from your big guy? An all time great. props from the USA

He was still in his 'prime' when he come to NBA. He was long time in 'prime' mode and also long time injured. What I want to say? When he was playing like this in 85 or 86 or 87 he was still not at his peak, still improving. When he got his prime he was already injured. Pity.
