I LOVE This Old Acoustic Guitar Preamp

In this video I'm talking about how some old and cheap gear is actually REALLY good. Affordable gear in the past was actually still made to last, in this case I'm talking about my Rane Ap-13 Preamp, It was made as an affordable dual acoustic preamp for acoustic players made in the 80's and 90's and it's still going strong today!! Can DELAY With Acoustic Guitar REALLY Work?
Thanks for sharing👍 would love to hear you on the lap steel😁😁👍👍
Thanks! I’ve done a few videos on LapSteel in the past and I’m sure I’ll do more in the future ☺️
Great video. But how many capos does a man really need? 😉
Haha! There’s no such thing as too many capos 😉
wow fantastic sound. Are you just going from guitar to eq to interface?
Hi, thanks! Yeah I am 👍 Glad you like the video 😊
looked like two mics being used at 1:00 ... what's going on there?
Hi, yeah these other mics are just to give another option in post, but you’re not hearing them in this recording, it’s just the Km-184
Wonderful comparison, thanks! The Neumann 184 sounds very open, has a very focused bass response. Austrian Audio sounds a little dull in comparison, "dusty dull", a pleasant dull, though, not a boring dull. To my ears CC8 also has a bit more bass, and it sounds very flattering all in all. If I'd had a guitar that's a little harsh, I'd go with the CC8, but if I was 100% happy with the way my guitar sounds, and if I'd be comfortable enough with the microphones picking up every nuance of my guitar, I'd go with Neumann. The CC8's have the potential to cover up a bit, whereas the Neumanns really show it all. I'm totally impressed with the sound quality of the CC8, especially considering the price. Compared with the KM 184's they sound to me like the old KM 84 would probable sound like compared to the newer KM 184. It's a great microphone! Thanks again
Hi, thanks for the comment 😊 yeah that’s a good point, it does really depend on how the instrument sounds before deciding which mic to go for 👍
Nice sound. Do you use any comp/limiter presets for recording?
Hi, thanks! No I just use it when I feel like I need it, which is not very often and not in this video.
I remember when you could actually afford them.
Haha! Yeah that’s true. I picked up one second hand in 2008 for €600
Build another one exactly but a little longer and with a bender on it! And let’s hear how it sounds. This one has a nice solid sound to it!
Hi, oh yeah a bender would be nice! 👌 thanks for the comment 😊
wow. i've been keeping an eye out for a multiband compressor, the DC24 from rane. I think they had some chorus racks and a parametric EQ as well. but never thought I'd see something like this. cheers from Brazil
Hi, thanks for the comment. Oh nice yeah I’ve seen some of their EQ and choruses pop up from time to time, not seen anything going second hand from them for a while though.
Hi Fabian, half my gear is old and outdated, but it still works! I've got an old Aphex Aural Exciter hidden away in a box somewhere- this has inspired me to dig it out!
Hey Geej, oh nice! Don’t know what an Aphex Aural Exciter is but it sounds interesting! 👍
That’s awesome, I recently got the Art Channel Strip III For $400 US, it’s basically a preamp compression eq, wish there were more, but with plugins a lot of the cheaper outboard gear is disappearing
Oh nice! Yeah I love outboard gear! I’m now looking on EBay for more, I have a whole 12U rack unit to fill 😂
Eine lowden ist auch meine absolute Traumgitarre! Obwohl ich noch nie auf einer gespielt hab🤣
Fantástic story and só happy to you get your guitar again !!!! 🙌🙌 By the way ! Are you on dadgad tuning ?
Thanks so much 🙏 yes I’m in DADGAD 😉👍
Great😁😁👍👍
Thanks for this - I've been looking for a way simple to record myself singing and playing - just acoustic so that my daughter will have a record of it when I'm too old to sing well or dead to remember her childhood and her Dad. So it records to an SD card - what's the easiest way to get that into a format which can be shared and then played? Sorry for the Luddite question, I'm old! Lovely video thx.
Hi, thanks for the question! You’ll have to then transfer your songs from the SD card onto a computer (or phone, iPad etc..) and then you can either save it and share it right away or you can further process it in a Digital Work Station, here’s a few: Logic, Pro Tools, Garage Band, Ableton. Garage band is free on all Mac devices and it’s also quite simple to use so maybe that’s a good place to start?
Hello, a question that bothers me, are your speakers on when you record?? Thank you very much, very nice videos
Hi, no they’re not, or if they are on then I have them muted.
I found the Moonlight patch in the TonePrint software. Using my iPhone I was able to “beam” it into the pedal. The patch is built for bass by a bassist but man oh man does my acoustic have some warmth that it didn’t have before! Great subtle hall reverb!
Really like your channel
Thanks so much 🙏
Its fabian holland from the highlanders!!
Great! Could you tell me how you synchronize the sound with the images when you record guitar for TH-cam?
Hello, thank you for your advice, I really like your work. Quick question, do you use a preamp for your microphone? Or an amp in the room? how do you get such a natural sound? THANKS'
Just ask Tommy Emmanuel
I am a nylon strings player... how it's going with nylon strings..?
Well done.A brilliant video and just what I was looking for.I sing in the kitchen and want something in one take and have a nice vibe. I have logic as well but that's why I want the pureness of this method. Thanks !!
Holy Smokes on the water!! I'm 50 years old and never heard anything like this! I got to learn it and play it before I die. Is the sound of always wanted to felease drom my soul, daddyo.
Thanks for the informative livestream. I enjoyed it. For those of us who like to endlessly tweak knobs to dial in the perfect tones, it’s helpful to have a mini looper (like the AFX Broken Record) in the front of the chain. That way you can hear how the eq tweaks affect all the different ways you normally play (hard strumming of chords, light finger style, etc.).
Great video 😊 Marcus Mitchbow
Just seen this and you’ve sold it. Just bought one
Could you compare the new version 2 of this pedal??
Thanks for this! I'm running a wet and dry signal also but I'm finding that my delay doesn't cut through as i need it to sometimes...
Hey Fab, Thanks for this video, love it. :) The sound quality you have achieved is amazing, could you please share your workflow from the raw sound to the final version. Also the guitar playing is 🔥 #Subscribed👍
Did you use the same Bridge piece in the beginning and end of the guitar? meaning, the string spacing is the same for the whole length of the guitar?
Wow - i need to build exactly this! Question: i don't see what tuners you're using.. could you add them to the description? Thanks!
How much will this setup cost me? Starting to play live shows on TikTok. I need both of these mics to goto into my iPhone 15 pro. I have the correct adapter.
This all makes sense. Question: what if I want to use one mic for guitar and vocals, but also want to video it so I can post a video to YT? It seems the only way to do this is to use my usb camera (plugged into my laptop) for both rhe audio and video. I donhave a USB condenser mic something other than a cell phone mic, is to use either a usb condenser mic or a real condenser mic, but then I don't think I can use the video from the usb camera, and the audio from the usb condenser mic separately? Or maybe i can, but not without using a DAW or some other app to sync rhe sound with the video? Im trying to keep it as simple as possible (no DAW, no audio interface) but still having a decent quality look and sound
Hey dude its a bit of late comment but would really like to know what song you're playing here? Very beautiful sound
great review, nicely done, ended up just waiting to hear you say aqueuestic reverb again, golden
What camera you're using?
I’m considering one of these Zoom portable recorders OR a USB mic which can go direct to my iPhone (Shure MV88 or Apogee Mic). Any suggestions on whats a better option?
That improvisation was just gorgeous!
Also is that the Gold Age Project MKIII Ribbon mic? Looking to grab a budget friendly quality mic
Really appreciate your outlook. I just booked a recording session for the first time and it was very mathematical and everything was to a grid… totally took out the performance side of it and it was extremely awkward singing and playing separately. Hard to find any emotion and unnatural. Thanks for sharing that it’s all about preference and what I’m comfortable with to get the best take. Also: SIMPLE! I used to get extremely overwhelmed with this stuff so simple is my new motto and going very slow. All the best.
Hi, thanks for the comment. So glad you found the video helpful. I feel the same way, so many times I’ve recorded in studios and felt very uncomfortable, also in that setting it’s very hard to start telling the producer how to do his or her job so you just end up recording it whatever way they think is right, which in your case was obviously not the right way.
i'm using a zoom h2n and my recordings sound quite harsh....maybe it's the room...ot maybe its me :)
Hi, thanks for the comment. I’ve heard that the H2N is really good? Although I haven’t tried it myself. Do you have any other mics that you can compare it with?
Great song, I loved it!! about the microphone, that is basically because the ribbon, it's not only a mic, it's also a musical instrument, and for that reason you must to know how to playing it
Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes, exactly! Glad you enjoyed the song 😊
Or record directly into garageband or someother software!
