Oooo gonna have to try this
Didn't the president or somebody recently declare Marshall Law in South Korea?
Yes, but it was overturned pretty quickly.
When I was a kid growing up in the 70's it was easy to find bone-in chuck roast. Even in the 80's. That bone would go into the slow cooker with everything else. Over 8-9 hours the collagen in that bone turns into gelatin giving the broth even more body and goodness. Bone-in beef roasts are pretty much unheard of now. I've asked butchers. Butcher shops no longer receive big sides of beef like the old days. If you know a market with bone-in chuck roast let me know.
@@warrenj3204 I have not seen anything like that. The closest I see is chuck of short ribs with bone attached but more pricey. I’ll keep an eye out for it!
What I do is I cut up the chuck roast, salt it with kosher salt, and let it dry brine overnight. The salt first draws moisture to the surface of the meat (at about 3-5 hours in) but then the salty water gets absorbed back into the meat which seasons it nicely. Next day I pat the meat dry. It's generally pretty dry anyway but I like to make sure because dry meat will brown better. Then I heat up my cast iron skillet, add a bit of oil, and I brown the meat in batches. I leave a good 2-3 inches between chunks so that the meat browns, not steams. I move the browned meat to the slow cooker. I brown onion in the skillet next just like you did. Also maybe a clove of garlic. Fresh thyme and/or rosemary. And one bay leaf. Oh ... and some tomato paste. More umami. Homemade chicken stock! Good stuff! I make my own stock too! I bring it to boil on the stove first. But then I dump it in along with a splash of soy sauce (fish sauce would be better) and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Fresh cracked pepper too. And more salt for the broth if it needs it. I add the potatoes and carrots 1-2 hours before I intend to serve. Sometimes 10 minutes or so before I serve I add frozen peas. I too thicken with corn starch and a cold liquid. Milk or water. As soon as it thickens up I turn off the heat and serve.
@@warrenj3204 I’ll have to try this. Sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing. I do heat the chicken stock up first also, forgot to record that part. I need more easy dinner recipes!

That coffee was $18 for (I think) 12 ounces. Which works out to $24 per pound. Chances are good those beans were roasted weeks ago in a different state. There are coffee shops locally that roast their own beans on site for less money. J&S Bean Factory in Saint Paul sells theirs for $15 per pound and it's outstanding. (My buddy Steve owns the place.) Equally as good is Sovereign Grounds in Minneapolis (48th and Chicago) which they sell for $14.50 per pound.

Kai's Sushi & Grill (two locations Minnetonka and Chan) has a very good squid salad. "Ika Sansai". Squid, mushroom, ginger, sesame seed ... I get it every time we eat there. Excellent place all around but not AYCE and not cheap. (Not outrageous either.) Questions: Did you de-bone the duck yourself or did they do it for you? Was the duck tender? You eat the rind on the squash? The only heat you added were the fresh chilis? Did they spice up the broth? Why the plastic liner? Easier cleanup?
@@warrenj3204 Good questions. Yes, I did remove the meat from the bone on most of them. But I did add the both bones and meat into soup. Duck was very tender. No, I do not eat the rind on the squash. We have to keep it so it keeps the shape of squash otherwise it will all dissolve into the soup. Yes, only the fresh chili added. It did not spice up the broth at all. Could have used another 5. The plastic liner is for easier clean up but I was just talking with my sister more last night about that and we did some research and might not be good for our health to use those plastic. It was super easy clean up but not worth to sacrifice for our health. Prob wont use those anymore.
Love your review. It helped me understand the flavor profiles of each dish.

If I got my cast iron skillet smokin' like that in the house T would be less than pleased. You guys must have a hood that vents out of the house?

Food there sucks
It was pretty good when we went when they first open. Wonder if it’s changed?
I made mashed potatoes today myself! My recipe is very different from yours. I made mine the same way my pasty white Scandinavian farmer ancestors have been making them for generations. 5lb bag of russet potatoes. Peeled and sliced in half only. Cold water. Big pot. A fair amout of kosher salt. Bring to a boil. Cook until just tender. Drain. 1 stick salted butter. Some 2% milk. I eyeballed it. Maybe 1/2 a cup? And then mashed with a hand masher just until smooth. That's it! There were no leftovers! I want you to know I would've LOVED your mashed potatoes. T would too. But I doubt my dad would. Or T's dad. Too fancy.
You should try this recipe next time! Just don’t put as much garlic. Next time I’ll just use simple tiny bit of garlic power, make it easier. The kids enjoy mashed potatoes but we rarely make it. I’ll have to make it more often. Thanks for sharing. I’ll have to make it next.
In many families in the upper midwest mashed potatoes are just a simple unadorned side dish. A carb meant to sit alongside chuck roast or meat loaf or roast chicken or pork chops. As such it's sort of boring on purpose. Kind of like white rice perhaps in Asian cultures? I don't know. I didn't have garlic mashed potatoes until I got them at an expensive restaurant as a young adult. I hope to make lutefisk and Swedish meatballs in a few weeks. Those potatoes won't even be mashed. Just boiled as per tradition.
@ that’s exactly what rice is for us. Simple plain dish to balance out our main savory dish. We eat it pretty much with every meal. It’s nice now we’ll replace rice with these potatoes. Mashed, oven, boiled, etc.
Looks delicious! Thanks for the method 😎
