Not dying, BUT they are going to be more boutique. less made, more expensive. Parts are going to go through the roof. get your amps NOW, get extra Tubes, caps, magical fairy transformers etc. It will get harder.
Anytime something in metal dies, it doesn't stay dead for long. That's why metal is so metal.
Great Video, good to see in a live band setting 🤘🤘🤘
I'm primarily a punk player and I really only need one good sound at a time to be happy. All the modeller options would be wasted on me. Not to mention I prefer owning something I can repair if I have the ability to. If a modeller craps the bed then it's a paper weight, but tube amps can be fixed, modded, rebuilt, etc. I don't even really use pedals much, I can be happy with just a bridge pickup plugged right into an amp. I'm not a good guitarist at all but I enjoy the simple things. I'm sure I sound like a boomer despite not playing any music a boomer would be able to stand for more than 3 seconds but oh well. I'll never give up having tube amps
I do think tube amps are going to die out for future generations of guitarists but I do think they'll still produce them but it'll be more for commercial purposes.
The high gain sounded better with the stock speaker
Theres one in my area for 100usd. I want 😍
vht
Started to listen to this bullshit and was attempting to sell my Marshall 4x12's when I realized....WHY AM I SELLING THESE>>>>THEY CAN BE SWITCHED>>>>used as 2x12......you can even use multiple amps and use half as one 2x12 and the other half likewise...so WHY SELL...they are flexible and NOTHING ABOUT THEM IS OBSOLETE...DONT LISTEN TO THESE TOOLS>>>THEY WILL HAVE YOU SELLING OFF YOUR GEAR AND WANTING FOR REPLACEMENTS!!!! (take the speakers out and build boxes and NOW YOU HAVE 4 1X12's...WHY SELL..WHY LISTEN TO THESE CHILDREN...and kid..get some years and experience (not mommies pocketbook....how many 4x12's do you own....50....60?)
NICE EPI DUDE!!!
The day I trade my tube amps for a modeler, on stage or off, will be a cold day in hell.
57 wins this one
I got a 2x12 just because a 4x12 is heavier, more expensive and harder to move around, it wouldn't even fit my car haha. If I didn't have to think about moving, I would choose 4x12 100% of the time.
Sorry the closest thing to an actual tube amp are the hybrid ss tube amps. This digital stuff although it can sound great, it still doesn't match a tube and I have tried it.
The comparisons on this channel are fantastic, but in order to actually get tone like this we need to know what the pro setup is into your DAW. What preamp, EQ, plugins, pedals are you using? How loud is the amp in the room? I have multiple cabs and mics with a Mark V, and every time I try to record a cab at home it sounds like absolute unusable shit.
I have a Mesa Roadster head and 4x12 that I no longer play because I bought a Fractal FM3 and I am an old dude (54)... I can see kids buying digital... I would be shitting myself if I owned an amp company
your sick man how'd you get to own all these dream amps????
How well are tube amps dying? I watched a video showing all the modelers and their 5150 sounds against a real Block Logo 5150. That made me buy a real Block Logo 5150 amp and matching cab. In fact, I happened upon Kenny Olson’s old rig. The sound of the amp through the video blew away the modelers and was apparent. I can say from playing it at home, I’m happy to have the real thing.
Sitting in my car watching this video waiting for this slow, long train to pass. I look to my left and see the McDonald’s drive thru completely backed up. Folks, convenience kills all things good. How bizarre is it that in my back seat I have a repaired tube amp I just picked up and a “healthy eating” book I just ordered. What is the universe trying to me!!!!! 😂 wtf
I don't know if they are dying (I use both, but I am one of those older players, on the way out) but I love your sense of humor - I was cracking up for half the video.
Some people have digital girlfriends too. Some people prefer porn to sex. I guess this is the era we live in.
Maybe we can use digital guitars, too. Just skip the physical instrument and use something like the user interface from Guitar Hero. Or a holographic simulation of one. Whatever.
I’ve been playing for 25 years and I have 12 tube amps . I consider myself a hybrid player cause I also have a quad cortex. As much as I love my tube lamps unfortunately I have to agree with you. I do see amps becoming more like a classic car. Collectors will probably have them, but they’ll probably be too expensive and inconvenient for the majority of people. I used to drag around 4 x 12 and an amp everywhere but the quad cortex allowed me to capture that exact same and I also was able to capture the bassist’s amp and also run the vocalist through that. Now when I set up on stage, it only takes 10 minutes because I have one rack case versus my amp and a bass amp.
I’m a new guitar player, been playing for three years. Fell in love with the guitar, and also testing and understanding and using different types of gear. Have 6 tube amps and 2 modelers. I”m trying to sell one of the modelers and have no desire to sell my tube amps. I wish I had space for more, but I also realize I don’t need all of them and it just feels like a luxury.
Tubes ain’t going anywhere. Anyone with half a brain and good ears know the digital thing doesn’t sound the same. I tried ever system over the last 30 years and I’m not impressed with any. I have a fractal and it’s okay but not the same. Sure the sound is acceptable live in a band setting, same w kemper, but my amps are always the go to. I’d rather play than become an engineer. Too many variables live and adjusting on the fly isn’t easy. I don’t need to mail my head out if it crashes, but fractal is going back to fractal for sure. Anyone with half a brain and a multimeter can fix a tube amp.
The biggest problem with every modeler is the split second the pick hits the strings you feel it and hear it with a tube amp. Not even close with a modeler and I have had all of the good ones.
Yep. That's why I have 10 x 100W heads in my house...cuz they are dying. My house is the tube amp cemetary.
Never!!!!
Tube amps will never die because all the digital modelers need them for source material. They need the original source to “model”. I’ll always keep and have my tube amps. They are cool. They are nostalgic. They are iconic. They may not be as prevalent, but they won’t ever go away entirely.
This is a tired old subject
Bogner, EVH, and Soldano sounded sick. The VHT seemed to have its own thing going on and sounded pretty damn mean as well. Blackstar wins for most effective noise gate.
Tube amps forever!!! I’m getting super tired of comparison videos showing how tube amps sound exactly like a modeler. TOTAL BS!!! First you can’t possibly judge tone listening on your crappy phone speakers. I also have no respect for guys that run their models and tube amp through an IR. WTF MAN! A tube amp isn’t meant to go through an IR!!!! No effing wonder they sound the same 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄. However I have embraced the modeling world and owned a Helix and now a Tonemaster Pro. But they ARE NOT anything like a real tube amp. You hit it square on the head Kyle!!!!
I just dumped my modeler and went back to an all tube half stack. Lol
I have a half stack 5150ii w/matching cab. I bought it for $600 in maybe around 2012? I’m never selling it. I’ll sell my guitars before I sell the amp. It was what I worked and saved for and I was a man on a mission to get that head. For me, I’m able to dial in 90% of the tones I need all analog. So for me it’s a win win. However, playing live at church I can’t use it because I have a great way of mic’ing it. So I’ve been contemplating maybe an AC30 combo to take care for that. For my pedal board though, I do run a Mooer amp modeler, (Fender Jr. based) it gets the job done but obviously, the feel isn’t there.
I'd love to see some blind A/B tests where people try to "feel" which one is the modeler and which one is a real amp.
Since I dumped digital modelling, I've never bought as many tube amps and analog gear! In fact, I've started to record with magnetic tapes again and WHAT A BLISS !!! It's not just about 15 tube amps I have for the guitar now, it's an Ampeg and a Mesa Boogie for the bass, and a stereo Mesa poweramp is used with PA speakers for the synthesizers too! So, I have tubeys from Mesa, Marshall, Soldano, Fender, Engl, CAE, Vox, Telefunken, Carvin... But the tubes are now into the stompboxes as I bought the EHX ones and they entered the recording studio with spring reverb, mic preamps, tube microphones and compressors! I dream of having an EMT plate reverb. I would have loved to buy a 32 channels TL-Audio tube recording console but I lacked the money BUT I could get an Amek Big44 and a Big28 : just merge their busses and you have a 72 channels automation/totall recall giant studio console and if you know what to do to upgrade an Amek, you're on par with a SSL... Now, if your ears make no difference between the real thing and modelling, great for your purse...
Lets talk about Oil Paint instead. I think acrylics have killed oils. Who is the last artist that used oil paint? Rembrandt Van Rijn maybe. But then digital imaging is why we don't need painters. You cant give away a decent pallette and easel these days.... I been playing guitars since 1966. Too many great things about tube amps to say they are dying. Fender Mesa VOX Orange Peavey Crate Ampeg are some that I use. Im still learning what all them knobs can do.....
I returned to real tube amps, I don't miss modelling, now I sound great again... Actually, it's just like VSTis, digital recording etc : it's for the poor
I heavily disagree about tube amps dying. I only use tube amps and that's all. Anyone who wants to donate their unused tube amps to me are welcome!
Could i survive with digital modelling only? Yes. But no point in skipping those old amps.
For "in room" sound there is no beating a tube amp imo. That being said, I haven't used an amp in 15 years. I think what is important to me is to have a tone that makes me want to play. Have spent way too much time of my life dialing in tone and forgetting to just freaking play lol. I currently use an AXE FX III and this thing is way more then what I need. Though the truth is there are days where I just want to blow the picture frames out the wall with a tube amp to feel the power between my legs lol. As long as we're having fun, f*ck it... use whatever.
for me I've had all the units and no matter what I do it goes like this ....I've never left a gig and went "wow , my tone was just ridiculous" ...(w/ the modelers ) and I've never left a gig w/ a real amp and went "damn , my tone sucks . "
Fantastic shootout. I suppose I’ll be picking up a UA SD-1 for guitar amp miking now. MD421 still slays, but I was shocked by the tone of the humble e835.
Until someone someday build a digital circuit that will behave 100% like a tube (and no, Nutube did not make it) tube amps will be the flagship of guitar sound. Like you say, you can't beat the feeling of a cranked tube amp with a 4x12 cabinet.
You are absolutely right with respect to the feeling of playing a real tube amp. But this difference to a digital device has meanwhile become exremely small. When I played a Kemper 8 years ago, it was really fascinating getting the feedback from the audience that you sounded killer but the feeling on stage was rather not there....Meanwhile modeling has become much better and even the FRFR Cabs like the Tone Master cabs from Fender which make you miss almost nothing. I can keep up with my HX Stomp against my colleague playing a Marshall stack and have a very realistic feeling of my amp. I still own a plexi and a JTM45. They are only used on rare occasions, like oldtimer cars....;-) Regarding feeling the next (and maybe last) step of development will have to come from the cabs not the modelers themselves. Your real amp is the cab with its power amp.
No
1x12 cabinets is for adults only 😁 By the way important to mention when you look at the videoclip Fix from Blackstreet featuring Slash. Can you imagine Slash standing there in that empty room with a modeling amp and 1x12 speaker cabinet or studio speakers? lol, no way!
Mark my words the modeling amps will be a shortlived hype. Tube amps will come back full force.
This is good!!!! - Scientific and Educational!!! - the difference each power amp makes is noticeable, maybe not huge but noticeable. One link in the chain….Thank You Kyle!
