Abandoned Beaver County: Live!
This is a recording of my presentation to the Beaver County Genealogy & History Center on July 17, 2024. Its purpose was to not only to promote my new book Abandoned Beaver County, but to promote curiosity in the deep history of my home County of Beaver. I talk about sites across the county including Beaver Valley Bowl, Aliquippa, the Smiths Ferry Branch Railroad, the Koppel Trestle, the Dando Brickyard, the Art Bridge, and many more.

Exploring a Pennsylvania Town Submerged for Decades
มุมมอง 987Kหลายเดือนก่อน
On November 9th, 2024, after about two weeks of the water levels in Youghiogheny River Lake being drastically low, I had the chance to go explore one of Pennsylvania's most unique places. The Great Crossings Bridge, and the village of Somerfield along the old riverbanks had become visible and explorable for only the second time since the lake was formed. In this video, I explain the history of ...

Exploring Pittsburgh's Abandoned Brilliant Cut-Off
มุมมอง 12K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Brilliant Cut-Off (or Brilliant Branch) was opened in 1904 to alleviate congestion on the Pennsylvania Railroad Mainline through Pittsburgh. It was closed from 1976-1995, then closed again for good in 2019. Currently, its fate is in the hands of Allegheny County. For now, its just a nice walk in the woods. bridgestunnels.com/location/brilliant-branch-railroad-bridge/ pghbridges.com/pittsbur...

The Mon-Fayette Expressway keeps getting revived as a saviour for the Mon Valley. I think it's a waste of money, time, and resources, and is not worth destroying Turtle Creek for. I encourage you to look into it. If you think the same thing, write to the Turnpike Commission and to your elected representatives. I'll put links in a comment too. This is likely not the last time I will discuss this...

Great info you are providing. Just a personal preference, the flag was made to be flown, not worn. Now we have so many various interpretations of the American flag, no wonder we are torn apart in this country. We can’t even decide which America to honor. Hope someday, we can return to honoring the principle and not any person.
BORING
My mother grew up in Confluence and was 22 yrs old when they flooded Somerfield. She saw the reappearance of Somerfield 2 times after the initial flooding. I got to experience the Stone bridge this past November (11/2/24). Spooky to see ....
It would be great to find out if any of the metal detectors found anything cool
I find all your videos interesting. Fred Walter
This was cool. I shared it with my family. Love your sense of humor
Hi Noles, I just watched y video on the Wabash bridge and railroad. You certainly put a lot of time and effort into your research. I was impressed. I live very close to rt51 and 376 the parkway west I use it quite frequently. I also have seen the 2 large stone structures that remain from the Wabash bridge. I have never driven threw the tunnel. I know in the past it was HOV and they changed it. Anytime i pass the entrance I see a sign that says closed so I never bothered, because when I'm in that area I headed toward the parkway West or home to N. Baldwin. I always thought it was one direction either way at different times of the day. It looks like it is two ways from your video. Great video. Fred Walter Pgh.
7:50 should of brought metal detector
You’re only 20k short of 1 million views after only one month. You should be very very happy with that I would think. Very interesting video. I enjoyed it.
I noticed you wouldn’t show that statue because they would prove that town was flooded where a blacks lived and the white Europeans came over here poor didn’t have nowhere to live. That’s what they did when our ancestors refused to continue to teach them how to farm.
First tree you showed looks like a lion head!
Who were the people who lived there ????
Check out Jennings Randolph lake next
This happens every year. They take water out and put water back into the lake every spring. I spent my summers on that lake on the other side of the bridge. It’s not some crazy phenomenon.
Another one..I've found this and another video about lost Pa.towns .I'm from Pa and it's all new to me and it's really fascinating.i love history stuff even here in Pa..I live in NEPA the coal region the height of the coal region WB, Scranton region.and that's very historical stuff too here..from Indians to coal mining we got it all here
Next time, explain to these people that voting against their interest is stupid.
14:48 looks like another engine the crank is at the bottom and those look like freeze plug holes so that would be the side
Folks think they can dive down there and find precious items. Here's a hint. When towns are flooded like this, residents have about 4 years to get out. They don't flee in panic and they take their stuff with them, even if they have to make 12 trips.
There’s a bridge where I live that was built in 1673 and is still carrying road traffic every day including trucks etc. The design of a stone bridge is inherently very strong.
Looking on google maps of this area really shows how much water is normally there, looks like even that dry bit towards the end of the video is at a good level. It'll be back. The top down google map really shows the layout of the old town as the image is from the dry period.
This line is NOT abandoned. There's still some freights going over it, and there's a developer looking at converting it to a battery operated passenger line.
The old bridge by design puts pressure on itself through the archway. Modern bridges are supported with metal and concrete. They'll never last as long. Especially in harsh climates. Engine block is after the 1950s as it is overhead valves.
Excellent video! Very similar to what happened to the town of Oakland on the boarder of Carroll and Baltimore CO, MD, which lies under the Liberty Reservoir since the 50's. I don't think that town has ever been exposed like you show, so your video is really exciting to see.
I've been over that bridge a thousand times. Didn't expect the video to be about that bridge lol.
Fallout 76 vibes.
Its weird seeing a town so close to me in the spotlight after seeing this on the regular local news when it happened lol
Those pavements with groves or puncture marks were likely to be used to prevent horses, oxen and pedestrians from slipping whenever it snowed or the ground froze over.
Drink every time he says I don’t know what I’m looking at.
LOL, please don’t, you’d get alcohol poisoning
@ ha. Liked your video. Thanks for making it.
@@Noles.Explores hey by the way please advise whether you’d be interested in documenting the old Washington interurban streetcar line that went from Pgh to Washington PA. I don’t believe there are any good videos on it. I researched the line and could assist.
Not only are you rambling but it sounds like you don't know what you're talking about for the most part. I think you should have done some research before coming here and documenting it. However, maybe you're just visiting because you're curious about it in the first place which is neat I suppose.
You've never seen engine blocks before??????
I'd be metal detecting
I dont see a "town submerged in water" i see flat land. Why would the town be submerged?
Just guessing but I imagine the indentations in the sidewalk is for traction while its wet. Much like modern concrete is brushed for the same reason. Concrete can be slick af while wet if its just simply flat.
15:26 Oh that made me sad to see that. Think about how hard it would be to have to pack all your belongings back then and leave your little town and wonderful memories in your home. 😢
12:14 Wow, that’s so amazing.
Next time when the sound is that bad start narrating instead of keeping this up....
Bring back toll roads! Down with taxes!
You should do a story on lake wallenpaupack in hawley PA. I think it's the largest man made lake in America, I've heard it's an old town that they flooded to make a lake. I went to school a wallenpaupack area school district
Moraine Lake in Butler county was made the same way. When it's low you can drive the old road under the lake and see a few old foundations.
im honestly surprised theres any remnants of the old town at all being underwater for so long
Stump looks like a lion head
Could one scuba dive in the lake when it’s full? I’m sure the visibility wouldn’t be great but it might still be cool
Cool channel idk how it popped up, watching on Christmas evening from dope infested New Castle PA🤢🤮
TRAIN RAN THRU THERE
No such thing as free roads man. And there are more tollways than ever now haha
Its always strage to me how people over react to 100 year flood events, in most cases longer than that
that town was beautiful
Thanks so much for take me with you ❤
Unfortunately, Lake Mead levels dropped and several human remains were found. Were there any reports of this at this location?
That 8 cylinder engine block is not from 40s its newer it's interesting how it ended up in there...
