We need to STOP Pittsburgh's new highway

  • The Mon-Fayette Expressway keeps getting revived as a saviour for the Mon Valley. I think it's a waste of money, time, and resources, and is not worth destroying Turtle Creek for. I encourage you to look into it. If you think the same thing, write to the Turnpike Commission and to your elected representatives. I'll put links in a comment too. This is likely not the last time I will discuss this.

    It's the light rail system we could have for that money that bothers me. Or ffs, a BRT if we still want to aim low.

    I'd much prefer a regional rail line over an extended highway. Disused rail corridors are all over Pittsburgh.

    There is a worse project the Turnpike Commission is planning: The Commission wants to build a bypass around the Allegheny Mountain Tunnels. It will make a cut that is higher and longer than any other cut on the turnpike and will be an environmental disaster. Will all they charge in tolls, the Turnpike can afford a third tube. Do a video about this to try to stop it.

    I know previously, there were a lot of planned business expansions contingent on completion of this project. I believe at one time Kennywood was going to purchase and expand into derelict riverfront space if the project was to continue.

    Light rail systems and in general better public transportation in the greater Pittsburgh region would be way more beneficial than any of these highway projects could ever be. The fact that it takes me roughly an hour each way from the south hills to the top northeastern part of the county regardless of time of day by car is atrocious.

    Some maps/figures would help to show where the construction would be, where these towns are in relation, existing routes, etc to maybe drive home how redundant and/or damaging this highway would be.

    43 as it is the most baron desolate highway I’ve ever seen. Seems a little excessive to continue it to me personally. Does not really appear to me that the traffic flow would be really significant enough to justify the cost and impact that a large highway would have.

      Its got no one on it because it dumps you out on the worst and most congested part of 51. If I'm in union town why would I pay a toll to get to Elizabeth or west Mifflin 5 minutes faster.
      If I could actually get into the city 30 minutes faster which is what the road would or at least the previous route plan though hays and Hazelwood would have done. Then maybe I'd pay.

    Thank you for bringing this issue to light. I was unaware of its impact to turtle creek. 43 is always so void of traffic. It's quite funny actually. I've driven for miles on it and never passed anyone oncoming or inline. I need to read up on the official plan.

  • @competesmith

    Most insightful @Noles.Explores. I will add one additional point.
    A great many freeways that were built, destroyed the fragile fabric of struggling neighborhoods from an economic perspective. A great many freeways that have been stopped - were proposed to be built through more affluent neighborhoods.
    As a simple example of a project that was abandoned vaguely near where I currently live, Interstate 95 as you all know goes from Maine to Miami. But for at least 40 years, they were missing about 40 miles of it in central New Jersey between (basically) Exit 10 on the NJ Turnpike (yes, yes, I know, the 4 miles of 287 west of the turnpike were supposed to be 95) and a point where what is now Interstate 295 goes basically east-west outside of Trenton. Why was it shelved? Because the residents of Hopewell, Montgomery and a few other areas besides said H*LL NO. And those residents have money.
    And so as a result they ultimately (about 5 years ago) built an interchange near the east end of the PA Turnpike to connect directly to I-95 NE of Philadelphia, and VOILA! Problem solved. OK, traffic is not good on the roads near where 95 was supposed to go, but if you know what to do you can get by.
    According to our good friend Google, about 28% of all residents of Turtle Creek live below the poverty line, including 60% of all children under age 18. By any obvious definition, Turtle Creek is depressed economically, which makes sense as Braddock next door is (no kidding) even worse off economically than Turtle Creek.
    Which means that Turtle Creek has a target on its back.
    Same ol' story.
    Hey, LA County... any luck extending the I-710 through South Pasadena and San Marino to connect up with the 210? No? Not for the last 60 years? Gee I wonder why? (Hint... Money talks...) But I bet that those widening projects through Downey will skate through just fine, won't they?
    As if Pittsburgh is any different? Nope.

    I grew up in Pleasant Hills, and frequently drove to Monroeville and Murrysville. This freeway is so critical to fixing the terrible driving routes in the south hills. The current routes that are heavily used to drive east-west in the south hills are so small, winding, and confusing. Once 43 is complete, and they connect 576 over to it, Pittsburgh will finally have a ring of freeway around the city. I don't believe in eminent domain, or government as a whole, but 43 should have been built decades ago.
    That being said, I Love the channel! Keep up the good work

  • @just_delightful
    @just_delightful 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I agree with you, this has always been a waste. Basically it was a use the money for this or lose it with no alternative to spend the money on - the West Mifflin home displacement happened about 5 years ago. Reddit is such a cesspool, don't sweat that.

  • @NA.NA..
    @NA.NA.. 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    Monroeville did not begin to grow before the construction of the park way.
    Cranberry did not begin to grow before the construction of i279
    As someone from Brownsville I see no reason why the potential damage in the area closer to the city can't offset by the growth further out.

      As a Jefferson Hills resident 43 is an unnecessary ghost road. The usage it will receive simply doesn't justify the costs. We should be expanding light rail and improving bus routes instead

      no one wants another mega-highway that'll increase car dependence, make more traffic and cost way too much, while blowing through neighborhoods and force people out of their homes, it's pretty obvious why we don't want these things to happen

    • @JohnAdams-hw4rv
      @JohnAdams-hw4rv 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@NA.NA.. cities and their infrastructure should be built for people who live in (and pay taxes) in said city. Even if 43 was routed towards the city, it doesn't justify both the monetary costs and bulldozing entire neighborhoods for the sake of suburbanites/exurbanites. Urban decay (in all American cities) is a direct result of redlining/white flight. Just as the city says, $900M would be much better spent on light rail and other transit options. Building more highways does not alleviate traffic, it counterintuitively exasperates it i.e. induced demand. Not to mention that shifting away from automobile dependency is essential for both improving quality of life and alleviating the climate crisis

      I did look into this. According to Wikipedia, Turtle Creek Borough is 92% white. As for the specific neighborhoods and Wilkins Township I don’t know. I don’t believe this is targeted at minority groups in the same way most urban freeways were in the 50s and 60s, but I can guarantee if Turtle Creek was rich this project wouldn’t be proposed.
