Fusion & Jazz Finger Drum
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 เม.ย. 2024
Hey, I'm Tory Slusher, I'll be posting my drum & percussion stuff here. I'm also hoping to turn this into a finger drumming learning channel, particularly angled towards those who are interested in playing stuff that mimics, imitates or sounds like traditional acoustic playing. My focus has always been on jazz, rock and all of the great Fusion and world drummers out there.....

"Pneuma" drum playalong (partial). I try to make it groove differently... This seems to be a very popular tune these days amongst percussionists, so I thought I would add my two cents. Perhaps it has something to do with the Vai, Belew, Carey, Levin tour? ...I would say so.

Playing Drum Solos to Things I Find on TH-cam No. 1 || Yamaha FGDP-30
Tory, you are such an inspiration! I've only just found your channel and already you are my favourite finger drumming TH-camr. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and teaching finger drumming in this format. I have a question no one other than you is better equipped to answer: with your extensive experience with the FGDP 30, would you recommend it over the FGDP 50? I would like to use the FGDP standalone, mostly with a live looper for songwriting, as well as live (also with live looper). I *love* the 30's form factor (and price) but I'm wary of the lack of screen for changing things on the fly (in a live context) and not being able to load your own samples (which I may not need if the native kits are useful enough). Please help. You're incredible on this instrument and it seems that you chose the 30 and are perfectly content with the features it has. I would really appreciate your views on this.
I use an Akai mpx8 alongside it for samples. You can plug into the aux and it goes out of the plug output but not the USB, FYI. If you really need that functionality I'd just get the 50, tbh. I mainly use two kits, so the star buttons are great for me in that regard, being able to have them saved for recall...
DAMMMMMMMM! That is slick!
Rare talent. Thanks Tory🎉😊🥁
Was wondering why you got this one instead of the FGDP-50? I wonder if the sensor pads are basically the same on both.
Extra money spent on the sample player pads I didn't need, also the fact that I was thinking that with the whole thing being a darker color it might be harder to see what I'm doing in certain situations. I basically only use two kits at a time, tops... Also, the more stuff that's in it, the more stuff that can go wrong...
Nice
Booo! too short! just kidding. That was amazing to watch and listen. Just amazing.
I typically don't spend a lot of time on video content which is immediately going to get copyright... ie. It will only enrich someone else later on, it would be more economical to spend my time on something different.
Really great take on this! Did you have to source an existing drumless version of the track to play with, or did you use some of the tools that are out there these days for that sort of thing?
I just pulled the first one I found off of TH-cam... I just spent maybe you like an hour from start to finish from figuring it out and recording it to finishing up the video render to do the whole thing... But I was watching Mike portnoy learn to play it before that the other day, but I wasn't actually trying to play it myself... I don't really think it's that hard, I don't know why everyone's making such a big deal out of it. In truth, I don't even think Tool's music is that interesting. It just sounds like some type of hippie dirge.... Most of the time.
@@FusionFingerDrum Ah yeah, I saw the Portnoy video you're referring to. I doubt learning it was as hard as he made it out to be either (but I do still like Portnoy's drumming of course). The internet is a drama multiplier of 3x sometimes lol, because I guess that generates views. And while I don't mind Tool's music, sometimes I feel like people's reactions to it are "Hears a song in odd time signature once". Not disrespecting anyone's tastes though; everyone likes what they like. Anyhow, appreciate the insights! Play on!
OMG!!! ❤❤❤
Can't help but say the drum kit tones sound so good/real on everything you use this on. Fun to watch and listen. Like the change up beat. A bit of Kashmir in their riff? Sounds a bit LedZeppy. keyword, abit.
So I actually duplicated the track here and then added a giant reverb on one of them and then pulled that way down.. it was really the only way to get a huge sound that matched the rest of the band.
Wow! Tory, you have to be the greatest utilities session musician. Your ability to step into any musical scenario and work your way out in truly inspiring!
I don't know about "utility", but it's just notes and rhythms.... I am a composer that can play a lot of stuff, if that helps
@@FusionFingerDrum A ultilities player in baseball is a player that can do well in any position you put them on the field. This is how I view you with music. I'm continually blown away by your skills.
I should've been more clear here, too. When I say session I'm just referring to the recording of any track. You know, I had to think a long time about you taking requests for videos to make, not feeling like I would be wasting your time, I'm thinking it would be cool to hear you do a Mr Bungle/John Zorn Naked City type track where you blast through different genres of music. Country licks into blues, 50s R'n'r into Jazz, etc. Just a thought. It's a pleasure to witness anything you play, really.
I've listened to this several times in a row now. Uh-May-Zing!!!!!!!!
🎉🎊
You use the same crossover technique as I do on the bell ride. Nice tune !
MG. I love the way you play the drum too.
Nice
How amazing your drum sound. I am playing FGDP aswell, but still baby level.😂😅😂
Shits insane
slick! you're gonna make me buy one of these lol
Don't think just get it. The 50 is worth the price upgrade for uploading samples
Awesome!
Great tune, thank you for sharing!❤
THX appreciate the playings, and also the process of showing us pad per pad what they sound, and how the velocity works . also want to know if the additional kits presents on the FGDP 50 are worth it or not. and same with the additional buttons
No problem, I thought it necessary considering I myself was looking for a video that did exactly that and couldn't find it...
You are off the chain! Awesome skills
Probably the millionth time you read this, but Yamaha should hook you up hahaha
😆👍.... Wish they would
It's refreshing to see someone take this instrument at face value (especially when you get results like these), I've found it a bit tiring to see some influencers in the niche dismiss the FGDP due to the non-grid layout. This is a new thing, and I'm personally very excited to see more like it. And amazing playing, of course, you're an inspiration!
The layout is very well designed, in my opinion, some actual thought went into it rather than it just being a generic grid that you could assign samples to or something... I think a lot of people that do finger drumming or just doing music production, they're not really trying to play the instrument in any other way than using it like a loop to drum machine
Woooowwwww.... That's just awesome
Great demonstration! I ordered an FGDP-50 for my child who is now only able to play the normal drum set to a limited extent due to a chronic illness.
That sounds like a suitable substitution.... Anyway, get well soon
It is unbelievable how well you've embraced this deceptively inexpensive technology and achieved such original and tasteful artistic expression that compares well with the best of what premiere percussionists on an acoustic set are capable of! Outstanding!!!
Well, cost is all relative. For instance, the prices of things have been going up not just in terms of actual numbers over the years, that actually in terms of real inflation versus wages... In other words, a lot of the most legendary pieces of guitar gear, in the past, are probably quite inexpensive by comparison to what we are expecting now... For instance, it would be interesting to see the actual cost of some of these pedals that Hendrix used, the cost then and then adjusted now for inflation and whatnot to see what the actual dollar value is as compared to stuff that's released currently, then versus now etc
@@FusionFingerDrum interesting position. If you want to accurately discuss cost, the other variables would include other factors. When old tech is associated with a desirable effect not duplicated by current iterations, it’s labeled “vintage” and priced higher. When old tech objectives have been subsumed by more current tech, the price drops! When some new tech provides advantages which cannot be easily duplicated and it’s been patented, the price is even higher. When new tech has no protected advantages, it competes with other iterations and is priced less. Thus, higher cost has to do with exclusivity (patented or no longer made or associated with some famous person) that provides some sonic advantages within some genre of music.
So, I was speaking relatively...as the cost of an acoustic drum kit would be far more for a very usable percussion sound using this far less expensive device.
Whata a tasteful drum solo! ❤
I have watched a dozen videos already but yours basically sold me the product in less than 3 minutes, I'm floored by what this machine can do. Amazing there's no crosstalk between pads !
Not only that, but the ability to choke the cymbals as well as the individual drums...
Subscribed!
For what it's worth, and I never use this word, you appear to be some kind of genius. Your guitar playing is Holdworthy. But then you do this finger drumming too at such an advanced level. People speak of Matteo Mancuso or Jacob Collier or Louis Cole as being another level, but you seem to have an originality and maturity that easily places you in that beyond stunning musical ability category. What cracks me up is this sense of muted emotionality towards your musicianship. It's like you're someone who finds themselves after having explored and cataloged some new planet and now just walks about like a curator pointing out with quiet detachment some red and purple creature that appears and disappears in different places in space you've studied for a hundred thousand hours and now offers no surprises to you. Perhaps that metaphor was a bit extravagant, but the simple point is that you seem content in your own superlative world. Do you teach anywhere and do you accept mortals?
Thanks a lot, Believe it or not, I'm not really trying super hard to impress anyone.... It's just kind of a casual thing a majority of the time. Maybe people interpret that as low energy...
@@FusionFingerDrum That's interesting. That kind of detachment from what other's think, yet clearly you are investing attention and intention to performing at a high level of capability. And then there is the question as to "Why", if it's not that important to impress others, are you investing in posting on the internet. Not just anyone could achieve the level of capability you have as you have actually studied others you reference in your videos. So you have a broad understanding of the elements of jazz. Either you are accomplished with such ease as not to be aware of it being effortful or you are in fact investing substantial effort yet not expecting much from others attentionwise so as "not really trying super hard to impress anyone". Not knowing much about you, this is all merely speculation. It makes we wonder about whether you are a savant. Savant syndrome is a phenomenon where someone demonstrates exceptional aptitude in one domain, such as art or mathematics, despite significant social or intellectual impairment. Those with the condition generally have a neurodevelopmental condition, such as autism, or have experienced a brain injury.
Of course, when someone is so talented in one area, they tend to have sacrifice their attention in certain arenas of human pursuit. I think the term autism is something that is overused. There are those who are less interested in people and may therefore be less "politically and socially advanced" as others whose interests or intellectual investment is more exclusively in that area. Why definitions of savant syndrome feel the need to balance extraordinary capability with significant deficit seems not to appreciate the range of human possibility. After all, Einstein was not brilliant in his personal relationships with his wives or family members.
Thank you in sharing this video! One thing I hated about older drum machines or the pads is that you have to do all the programming of all of the drum notes. If you were to do it manually on the fly, the pads would sometimes miss registering on hitting the beat due to the lack of velocity or sensitivity to the pad. This finger drum machine looks functional and organic naturally with sensitivity on the pads intact. This instrument looks like something I've been missing in all my years of musicianship! The way how I'll approach it will be differently from how your showing on the video. When ever I hear music playing, be it others or my own music, my hand is tapping the closed high hat or ride cymbal and the snare to the beat of the song. That's what I'll do first once I get my hands on one of these. I'll start out and record one track with me playing just the closed high hat or ride cymbal and snare like I naturally do when my hand is tapping to a beat of a song. Then I'll record a second track with just the ghost notes on snare. Third track would be the bass drum. Fourth track would be for toms and finally a fifth track to rerecord high hat and ride cymbals from the first track for a little more finesse. Soon as I get done with my latest project, I'm getting one of these machines. Your video has sold me on this product! Yamaha should be paying you!
It is pretty good
Definitely gave an electronic drum kit some human feeling. Really well done!
Hello, good evening, you play a lot, congratulations!!!👏👏👏 Is it just me or does the FGDP30 sound better than its older brother FGPD50 despite being more complete in terms of functions or is it all a matter of editing and parameters?🤔
I'm not really sure, I've only played this one on my setup. Other people might be mixing things differently or something? I didn't change anything with this unit, it's straight out of the box...

Excellent! I see it right in front of me but I can't believe it.
That was great, Tory! That riff is so cool and I really dig the super outside stuff as well. Hope you’re having a great week and take care! :)
Several drummers do this all the time, obviously this is kind of imitating a bit of what Kirk Covington was doing...
@@FusionFingerDrum Most Definitely, I’m sure there’s tons! I’ll check out Kirk Covington, never heard of him as well as Tribal Tech, Thanks for the input! Take care! :)
Blessed by the algorithm once again. Usually you see this with hip hop. This is sick. Earned a sub!
👋😊
The best finger drummer I've seen. You have the total feel of the music as an actual acoustic drummer. You blow my mind. I've checked out some of your other videos, & wow! I would have never known that this instrument could mimic an acoustic drum kit so accurately. God has blessed you with amazing skills. Bless.
Thanks, pretty much everyone I've watched is an acoustic player... To me this is just another instrument, especially one that I can record with pretty quickly and get a good sound, aside from just not wanting to play a full kit myself, trying to record with one would be an absolute nightmare, and also expensive, space concerns etc... I like the fact that I can throw this in a small bag and then take it to a gig and actually have this huge sound, that is perfectly mic'd up every time.... Also, being a guitar player, the tapping thing, the fingers etc it just makes sense
Love this!
Thanks. ... such a great group WITH such great writing....
Agreed, if you have slender female fingers. But if you have craftsman's shovels like mine, then you don't need to try to play triplets on the small hi-hat pads on the 50. A pair of sticks is worth its weight in gold.
Shovels. 👋😂... However it gets done, whatever works for the individual, I say... I obviously like listening to acoustic drummers quite a bit....
Great stuff!
❤
Very inspiring! Buddy Rich on extacy. 😉
Good luck finding any drummer who can play that 💩
Well I mean, typically metal drummers kind of have the dexterity, but they don't really ever study the same kind of music outside of Rock, typically that is, that's not always the case... I used to hang out with a lot of decent drummers, they tend to like a lot of progressive players... But of course having the physical chops to do all of that is another story
goddam what a JAM!
Oh my lord, how are you this good?
