CYCLING HELL's HIGHWAY | Operation Market Garden 80th Anniversary
A cycle ride commemorating the 80th Anniversary of Operation MARKET GARDEN.
Operation Market Garden was an Allied military operation during the Second World War fought in the German-occupied Netherlands from 17 to 25 September 1944
The airborne operation “Market” was undertaken by the First Allied Airborne Army comprising of 2 US and 1 UK airbourne divisions supported by an independent Polish brigade. Their objectt was to capture strategic bridges while the land operation “garden” was conducted by the British Second Army, with XXX Corps moving up the center.
Our route essentially followed British 30 corps advance up the main existing road of the time, departing Leopoldsburg and ending at Eerde windmill, some 75km NNE. The route known as the corridor got the nic-name, hell’s highway.

A good vid ruined by the addition of a lot of crap music-noise. Why ????
Can you do wolf way please
Yes I'll look at doing that! Thanks for the idea
Good video! Grandad was in that battle he was a para. I’m not 100% on the details but I know he was due to jump into Arnhem but luckily for him he was kept behind with the HQ and travelled by truck down hells highway, I think as far as Nijmegen. The reason he was kept behind was because they needed a typist for the HQ. So being able to use a typewriter probably saved his life! I have always meant to try to follow the route he took, looks like a fun trip on the bike.
That's an amazing and personal story. Thanks for sharing.
Nice. I kayak the broads a lot. You wouldn't catch me on the water in those temps without a dry suit! lol. Great vid.
Good point!
Congrats on your incredible accomplishment! What time of year/month did you complete this ride?
Thanks so much. It was end of May! And still snow up on the Alps.
Lovely stuff Andrew. An enjoyable video.
Many thanks 😊
Not the most exciting video, but enjoyable to watch. Good channel.

Thanks!👍🏻
Really nicely done videos. It gives a good feel for the scenery, the route AND the personal aspects of cycling, including weather and discouragement. I must admit that I DID think, "Oh no, he's not gonna ride with that huge rucksack!" I'm doing that route this coming September, but I am a 73-year-old and plan on taking a more leisurely 100k a day pace. Judging from your experience from Andermatt to Chur I'm thinking I will skip that dramatic section and start either in Chur or Konstanz. I also have the advantage of not needing to get to any particular destination, except for visiting friends in Mannheim. From there I may just tool around in Germany some more, or follow the Mosel east, then take a train back to Zurich when my 3 weeks are up. Cheers!
Thanks very much for your great comment. Your right about the back pack! I think 100km per day will be much better and allow time to stop longer in places. Good luck 👍🏻
I don’t know why people on TH-cam think they need to put on music. This isn’t a music video. This is a trailer video, not in mtv
@michaelbattin6717 what's mtv?
I discovered this channel and watched the first episode and it made me want to watch the others. Keep going guys!
@RalphReynolds-q4b thanks so much! I'm hoping to have more vids for 2025 🤞🏻
Well try cycling in another country for 2025. You could like it and I would!
Certainly! I loved my ride back from Italy along the EuroVelo 15 route...see my other videos 😉😊
@@divum Okay!
Would you light a bonfire in your local graveyard???
I for one am not sure what you are suggesting? We certainly didn't...in any graveyard?

@RalphReynolds-q4b absolutely! We loved it. Can't wait to explore more next year🤞🏻👍🏻
This video was Brilliant! Keep up the good work!
@@The-FrontmanSquidGame Thanks very much.
kill the music
Was considering one of these but one sided entry and poor ventilation, I live in a hot climate, plus the inherently unstable design, saw me go to a Hennessy hammock.
@@MerlinMan1579 thanks for your comment. What do you think of your Hennessy?
Great video. Good grub. You two take some equipment with you.
Thanks very much. Yep....never knowingly under pack!!!
Looked a great paddle. I would have loved to be under that tarp in a storm. Looked fun! Thats my next bit of the river. I did the bungay loop a few weeks ago. My next bit is into beccles

Great video. Very informative. This trip is on my radar

Looked a nice paddle. I'm localish to there. That's my next adventure. Have a look at the bungay loop. That's the next bit along.
Thanks. I will. Cheers
Great video. Just found your channel. Not many tell you where to go or what you do. Excellent.

Thanks for another very informative video. Having been inspired by your previous videos, we have just returned from cycling from Leopoldsburgh to Arnhem. It was an amazing experience and very emotional to be in Arnhem for the weekends commemorations.
Thanks. Yes...Arnhem is a beautiful town but with a tragic memory for the British 1st Airbourne Div. The town does an amazing job of honouring those boys. I ran the 10km Freedom run from the DZ to the bridge...it was emotional for me too.
2024 and still it goes on.
I guess Liberation is a big deal for any nation.
Thanks for including me in the final cut Andrew. It was an honour and a pleasure to be a small part of the ride with you and Bart and Pete. In Arduis Fidelis.
It was great to meet you too, Bill. I'm really pleased that you had a good experience. Until the next time....."Nothing is Impossible."
Nice to see that you where here in our country! There was a big celebration that weekend. Parachutists where hanging in trees for 3 ours! It took a lot of time to get them down again. I'm looking forward to your next video!!
It was wonderful to be back in 🇳🇱 We saw parachutes land in trees and on roads!!! Crazy boys!
Absolutely made my day coming home to this. Love the battlefield rides. 😊
Thanks Bill!
So so happy to see this new video. I completed the full Liberation route in August on my vintage touring bike and camped all the way. Got the ferry from North Shields to Ijmuiden and cycled down to Leopoldsburg to begin my trip. Visited the Liberation museum first. Didn't realize at the time it was the 80th year of operation market garden. Your excellent videos inspired me to make the journey to the Netherlands ( I've probably been about 7 times now!). Thank you. Paul
Thanks Paul. It's a great Country to visit and cycle in. Wonderful people also. I appreciate your comment 👍🏻
Another gem and that is now on my list! Many thanks!
Cheers Dave
#outstanding. Never forget❤🤍💙🙏
Thank you very interesting and we will remember them. If only we had such a network of cycle paths like that here in the UK.
Completely agree! Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Looks like what I'm looking for. It would be perfect if it could be used as a wheelbarrow once disconnected from the bike. Thanks for the info.
Cheers. I know what you mean....
oh boy the way you set it up its only a matter of time before you flip over. I don't see why anyone would get this over the Heaven Tent
1/3 the price? Self supporting as a tent which the Haven is not? With some practice it is true, it works very well and is comfortable. The Haven looks good, but not £400 plus good.....oh and you have to rely on that specific airbed with the Haven?
@@lauriebloggs8391 The Haven is definitely worth the asking price (450€ in europe for the complete kit). You can use it with the Haven airpad or similar sized pads like the Thermarest Topo Luxe XL. Biwak tent set up is possible by using two hiking poles but I've never tested that. I acknowledge that the Night Cat might be cheaper (obviously their main selling point) but I don't go camping to save money but rather have a good time which usually requires good sleep.
@@Roman-nu1om And I have now, on several occasions, slept very well in my NightCat............Its versatility/adaptability is also one of the reasons it's coming on a planned canoe trip to the west Highlands.
This was an outstanding canoeing adventure. You filmed it so well, it was a delight to watch. A Five Star Film ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
That's fantastic. Thanks so much. 👍🏻
Watched all three videos. Great effort, and what an adventure. It gives me some insight as to what to expect, and I'm really excited. Where abouts did you end up parking ? For me that's a concern. I don't mind a couple mile hike to launch the kayaks, but my main concern is that the car is legally parked and still there when we return
We parked at Torran Bay, furthest southern point. We enquired at the hostel (which I believe is not running/open) and there was an elderly woman there who owned the land and boat yard. We explained our plan and she allowed us to camp the first night next the Jetty and park the car with trailer for 4 nights for a small payment. Parking and security are always a consideration.
Great video. Me and some friends are going to kayak wild camp. But we are using inflatable aldi kayaks. Each year we do a little adventure. And in a few weeks time this will be ours
Good job! You go for it. I'm hoping to go back up to Scotland next month and see the Autumn colours!
Really brilliant! Thank you for getting stung!
Thanks! Glad it was worth it!
😊 nice video. You were better off on the tarmac. I rode that part a few weeks ago in an event. Overgrown and nasty deep ruts, several people came off as did I but still enjoyed the route
Thanks very much for your support. Sorry to hear you fell off. Beautiful countryside...but not really a cycle path!
Crap hammock , flips on side leaves you trapped . Cheap materials don’t buy !
Crap hammock , flips on side leaves you trapped . Cheap materials don’t buy !
I agree with the extra tarp setup. I would be interested in trying the tarp the other way so the pointy end was above the door, with the guy line staked with a 4ft pole in front of the doorway. Thanks to both of you.
Thanks. I find hanging the ridge line is easy using the same trees that support the hammock. The extra tarp is definitely my preference. Cheers
Hello, I would love to do this, but we don't own any canoes or kayaks, is there any way to rent them from somewhere nearby?
Hi. Thanks. I'm not really sure. Perhaps a google search??! Sorry I can't help....
