Hiking footage around Colorado and beyond
Valley of Fire State Park, White Domes//Seven Wonders//Fire Wave Loop, Overton, Nevada
The Valley of Fire is a popular state park about 1hr drive northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada in the Mojave Desert. It is well known for its abundant red sandstone formations and otherworldly features. We hiked the White Domes-Seven Wonders-Fire Wave trails, a 3.5 mile loop that offers the most striking views of this park. Despite the crowd, we had a great time exploring this park and would highly recommend a visit if you are in the Las Vegas area

Skiing Banana Bowl, Flattop Mountain, Rocky Mountain National Park
มุมมอง 42719 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
On 1/25/25, my friend Scott and I took Fern Lake trail to the base of Banana Bowl in RMNP, skinned up to near the Emerald Lake Overlook of Flattop Mountain, and then skied down to Bear Lake. It was snowing hard the night before and that morning, resulting in near perfect powder condition. Be sure to check out avalanche condition and bring beacon/shovel/probe when skiing in the backcountry Music...
Backcountry Skiing at Hidden Valley, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
มุมมอง 29114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Hidden Valley used to be an old ski resort inside RMNP with a couple of T-bars and even a chair lift. It served people in Northern Colorado for decades before it was closed down in the early 90s primarily due to economic reasons. However, the area remains a local favorite for backcountry skiing and other winter activities due to consistently good snow and low avalanche danger, not to mention ea...

We took S Kaibab trail down to Phantom Ranch and then came back up the same way. The bottom 5 miles of Bright Angel trail, which is a more gradual ascend to South Rim with water supplies, was closed when we did this hike. We took the first shuttle from visitor center at 8am and got to S Kaibab TH around 8:15am. The hike took us a little over 7hrs to complete, and the views along the way, especi...
Fiery Furnace Self-Guided Tour, Arches National Park, Utah

We did self-guided tour of Fiery Furnace in Arches NP on 12/21/2024. The park issues 75 permits per day for self-guided tour which can be obtained a week in advance. This is such a fun area/maze and one is encouraged to explore around. Highlights of 3 separate half-day hikes we did in various parts of New Mexico. We drove to Santa Fe from Denver on 11/23, and hiked Atalaya Mountain the next morning. This is a popular local hike with 6 miles RT and 1700' elevation gain. The summit offers panoramic views of Santa Fe and surrounding mountains. After enjoying Santa Fe we drove to Carlsbad, NM to check out Carlsbad Caverns NP. We ...

Alkali Flat Trail, White Sands National Park, New Mexico

We hiked this top rated trail in White Sands NP, New Mexico on 11/29/2024. The crowd disappeared after the first half mile, and the view along this 4.5 miles loop was otherworldly. There were a lot of ups/downs over sand dunes which was both fun and a bit tiring. It’s a great time of the year to do this hike as temperature was a very pleasant 55°F. During a family road trip to New Mexico and Texas over Thanksgiving break, we hiked Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in the state of Texas, on Nov 26 2024. We started the hike from the visitor center parking lot, as road to the upper TH was blocked off. Twin Sisters Peak via Forsythe Canyon TH, Roosevelt National Forest, Colorado
มุมมอง 2612 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Twin Sisters Peak, elevation 8738', is located about half way between Boulder and Nederland in the Roosevelt National Forest. Unlike its more famous namesake in RMNP, this peak sees very few visitors. I hiked it a day after a major snow storm that dumped 1-2ft of snow in this area, and had to break trail on the approach to the summit. The summit was well worth the effort though, with unobst...

My solo climb of both centennial 13er Fletcher Mountain (13,958') and 14er Quandary Peak (14,272') via the west ridge. Starting from Lower Blue Lake TH, the route up to Fletcher summit was mostly class 2 talus hopping. Almost got to stay there but too much heat even in October. On my return list for sure. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
Thanks for watching/commenting. This park is very photogenic and one can easily spend a whole day there wondering around. Hope you get a chance to do it next time
Very interesting and beautiful. Great scrambling. Thanks!
Thanks Mark
Looks like a very interesting landscape. Is there much of a trail or is it just an area to explore? Cool video! I’ve never heard of this place before ❤❤❤
Great question. We generally followed a track provided by AllTrails, but in many sections one just walk on those wavy rocks and can definitely find your own path to explore around. Thanks for watching
That is fun, and we can do it again! Nice segment with all the snow in the woods. Exhilarating!
Thanks Mark. Next couple of videos will be desert hiking but I’ll try to add more winter activity content that’s worthy of sharing in the coming months
I love this! I hiked up Flattop a long time ago with 2 of my boys who were 8 and 6 at the time. It was super special and I think that was the moment they became hikers and wanted to come along with me. It's so interesting to see it covered in snow. I have never skied but if I did I think I would do cross country skiing or gentle downhills. Great video!!
Thanks for watching and sharing your story. Took my kids to resort skiing when they were 5 years old and now I can’t keep up with them. Cross country/ski touring is what I enjoy more these days
Wow! Absolutely amazing and so beautiful. I love the snow heavy tree branches. I never realized that people ski in this area. Sorry about your broken pole. Thanks for taking me along. Great video.
Thanks Vickie. Love RMNP in all seasons. It has lots of terrains/trails for backcountry skiing with varying difficulties, and relatively safe as well. New poles arrive tomorrow!
Was up there last Monday! There was a lot more snow than it looks like there was here. Looks like a fun day nevertheless.
Snow condition changes often and one has to catch it at right time, preferably right after a big storm. Skied Banana Bowl yesterday near Flattop Mtn and the condition was A+. Video coming tomorrow. Thanks for watching
Very pretty video and you had perfect conditions. Congratulations to your wife on her 30th, 14'er.
Thanks Vickie
I heading out tomorrow morning to check it out! Thanks for the video
Thanks for taking me back to the mountains, it's been a long time. Looks like a fun day!
Thanks Vickie. It’s been a cold and snowy winter so far in CO. Trying to get some exercises in while waiting for warmer weather to return
Looks like you caught a decent morning. I was up there last weekend and it was more ice skating than skiing, and very thin coverage overall. Hope things start picking up soon.
@@Wanderlust073 I was up there again last Saturday and the condition was not as good. Mostly windblown above the road
Looks so peaceful! I’ve never skied but this looks my speed if I ever started !!❤❤
I’ve skied in resort for many years, but got tired of the crowd and traffic. This year I started to get into backcountry skiing which I’ve enjoyed so far. It afford lots of serenity and freedom to explore wherever that’s safe. Thanks for watching
That was fun! Thanks!
Thanks Mark. Something to keep me busy during long CO winters
Awesome hike. I still haven’t visited here. Excellent video.
@@hikingwithjackieboy thank you! It was a great hike indeed. Try pick a calmer day as it’s often quite windy on top due to its prominence
Great video! Looked like a nice day to hike it. I did this hike at the end of May last year and took Bright Angel back up, it was 102 at Phantom Ranch, lemonade never tasted so good 😅
Thanks Austin. Hiking in 100+ degree heat is no joke. We ordered both lemonade and ice tea at PR, but lemonade is the way to go
Beautiful area and your video was so great. What month did you hike? The lemonade looks amazing! ❤❤❤
@@weekendhikeraz Thanks. We did this hike near the end of December. The lemonade costs $6 each and $1 for refill. Must have if you stop there
@ awesome! Looks like a great time to hike the canyon. It gets so hot and busy during the summer.
we made it as far as Skelton point..had lunch then turned around it's a lot harder going back up
Skeleton Pt is a good stopping point for many folks. S Kaibab Tr is quite a bit steeper compared to Bright Angel side but one also gets awesome canyon views throughout. Thanks for watching/commenting
I hiked to the bottom in April, 1982. I don't have any memories of hiking (except for blisters on the last 1000 feet vertical coming back). I have a photo showing the river visibly flowing and brown. Temperature was fine. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing your story Mark! Luckily no blisters for me, but my calf started to cramp up back near the top. Probably went a little too fast on the way down
What an incredible hike and adventure for your whole family. Very scenic and such great views. That's a lot of elevation gain, especially since it's the second half of your hike. I imagine you all were carrying lots and lots of water too.
Thanks Vickie. It was a great hike and highlight of our 2-week holiday road trip through some western states. The advantage of hiking GC in winter is the pleasant temps. It’s about 30-40 at rim and 50-60 at river, so water consumption was moderate. My son and I each carried 2 liters of water. We also fill up at Phantom Ranch and drank a few cups of lemonade so we were fairly hydrated before heading back up. It was a lot of elevation gain but certainly doable as a day hike for an avid hiker
Superb camera work and editing as always. Truly eye opening scenery. I thought Bright Angel Trail was more interesting and more scenic. Was Bright Angel not an option for you to Phantom Ranch?
@@pw2883 thanks. BA was closed from Phantom Ranch to Havasupai Garden till at least May. One can go up to Tipoff then take Tonto cutoff trail to connect back to BA but that will add another 4.5miles and the view seems average. Hopefully one day I get to do R2R from N Kaibab and up BA to S Rim so I get to experience all the major trails in GC
@@ruggedlandThere was a bit of ice, snow, and mud on BA when I hiked it mid-April several years ago - a recipe for a slip-and-fall over the edge!
A beautiful video! I have seen other videos re the Fiery Furnace; I think yours is the most fun. Excellent music. Watching you step over a drop and butt-slide on slick rock, trusting your foot-arrest, makes me think of John Muir's Stickeen dog adventure, which is truly exhilarating. The story can be read via a Project Gutenberg link at Wikipedia: "Stickeen: An Adventure with a dog and a glacier." It is hard to believe one's own relief when the dog exits the crevasse. The story has 20 pages; the dog's danger begins about page 14. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stickeen:_An_Adventure_with_a_Dog_and_a_Glacier Thanks for your video!
Wow!! what drone are you using for these videos?
It’s a DJI Mini 2 I bought when it first came out a few years ago
@ruggedland Thank you!
Great video! I love that area with all the neat rock formations. I explored Arches several years ago and cannot wait to go back!❤❤
@@weekendhikeraz Thank you! We’ve been to Arches quite a few times over the years. Winter is our fav time to visit with low crowds and pleasant temps
An adventure among sandstone castles. Very pretty and enough challenges to keep it spicy for you both. Really liked the slot canyon. Wonderful video!!!
@@TrekkingTheRockies Thank you. It was a fun little adventure for sure. Our new fav hike in Arches
I have a friend from Las Cruses and he keeps telling me the Organ Mountains are beautiful, I guess he's right.
@@RockyMountainsUSA they are quite impressive to look at and there are non technical routes to summit a few of them too
Got to be careful on that smooth rock surface. Good video! It seems to me one could easily get lost in those rocks given all the twists and turns with no obvious trail.
Thanks. We got cliffed out a couple of times and had to turn around and retrace our steps. But it’s all part of the fun and park service encourages people to explore around in the furnace as long as one stays on hard surface
Absolutely beautiful!!
Thank you!
Banner year for you and your hiking buddies. I watch all your videos and enjoy them very much. Here’s to a fulfilling and safe 2025 for you.
@@BuckeyeDrifters thank you so much. We’ve been following your channel for a couple of years now and it has given us many ideas for future hikes or even place to travel after we retire. Happy 2025!
Nice video, particularly of the Organ Mountains, and the Carlsbad Caverns. Impressive "Big Room."
Thanks Mark
This looks like an amazing place to explore. I’ve always wanted to explore Carlsbad. ❤❤❤❤
It’s a bit out of the way but well worth the drive
A nice escape from Colorado's snowy weather with your family. We're talking about heading to Lake Katherine in the Pecos National Forest in June, if the snow has melted out. Did you use your GoPo to film in the cave? Mine is terrible in low light. Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Vickie. We’ve been road tripping last couple of weeks through UT/AZ/NV and got a few more hiking videos coming. Looking forward to returning to the winter wonderland of CO soon. I did film the cave with GoPro and it’s not good in low light. iPhone pics did a better job. Happy New Year to you and your family
@@ruggedland The cave video looked great! Looking forward to your upcoming videos. Lucky you and your family to be on the road together. Happy New Year to all of you.

Thank for watching and commenting. Hope you can get Alice next year. It’s a wonderful summit
Very beautiful and interesting! You have taken us (virtually) to the tops of many peaks I never climbed when I lived in Colorado. Thanks for that and for your fine recapitulation!
Thanks Mark. Appreciate your comments and support as always. Happy Holidays
You provided exciting and sometimes thrilling entertainment in 2024. I can’t imagine how you will exceed this in 2025. Above all, be safe on those challenging hikes.
@@pw2883 Thank you for your continued support. Hard to top this past year in terms of high peaks climbed but hope I can continue to do some interesting hikes and share them when I can

I enjoyed your top10 highlight video. Thanks for putting this together. You accomplished so much this year, just amazing!!!
Thanks Vickie. Made it earlier this month and it’s a fun little project. Happy Holidays!
Otherworldly. Going down seems more fun than going up. That's a lot of gypsum.
It is the largest Gypsum dune field in the world. Thanks Mark
Looks beautiful! What an amazing place to explore!!!❤❤❤
It really is otherworldly. Thanks for watching
@@ruggedland until my family to the sand dunes in Colorado. They still talk about how cool it was. I’ll have to take them here too.
Both are cool places to visit and unique in their own way
One foot up those sand dunes and then 1/2 foot back.
Yup, which was part of the fun when going up
Great video! Hiking in the mountains is the best!!!
Totally agree! Thanks for watching
It might be Texas but what a great hike and it's steep. Nice views at the top. I was in Texas for a business trip with my husband in November. I didn't have a car and couldn't go hiking, sad. Felt funny having to pack summer clothes.
I’ve been in Texas before but first time doing any hiking there. It’s such a large state and we enjoyed this part of west Texas very much. There were cars from all over the country at the visitor center. Plan to be back in the future to check out Big Bend too as we just started collecting National park stamps. Thanks Vickie!
An interesting ascent in an area I was not familiar with. El Capitan impressive. Would be a heck of a scramble without the trail! Thanks.
Thanks Mark. There is a way to scramble up the ridge of El Cap from Guadalupe Peak trail near the summit. Someone made a video of it and it’s a lot of bushwhack. No one has rock-climbed the face yet as the park forbids that due to very loose nature of the rock
It seems Texas’ peaks are not quite as challenging or scenic as Colorado’s.
Different kind of beauty. More desolate and arid compared to CO mountains. It can be challenging for folks from sea level or those not used to longer hikes. We were lucky to have mild wind and cool temp that day. Thanks for watching
Beautiful! I love the snow from the comfort of my computer.... haha. I moved to Arizona to escape the cold during hikes.
Thank you 🙏 Having lived in CO for more than 30 years I’m used to the cold now. It does limit the hiking season especially in the high country. I enjoy some hiking in neighboring warmer states during winter time. Just returned from a trip to NM and will hit AZ in a few weeks. Happy trails!
@ nice! It took me 4 years to acclimate to the heat of Phoenix. Our bodies are amazing! Enjoy your time in Arizona. Where are you planning to hike?
Will be in Grand Canyon for a couple of days then off to Vegas to check out Red Rock Canyon area
I enjoyed your video. Love the drone shots too. Beautiful views.
Thanks Vickie! A short but fun winter hike close to home
Impressive rock wall on the Sister!
Thanks Mark!
Boulder, CO and the surrounding area was my stomping grounds. But I did not know of this Twin Sisters. Although I did hike Twin Sisters in RMNP. Nice video!
I didn’t know about it either until last year as there is little info available. I wanted to check it out as a half day objective and I’m glad I did. The approach was interesting but the summit was the best part. Thanks for watching
