What an incredible hike and adventure for your whole family. Very scenic and such great views. That's a lot of elevation gain, especially since it's the second half of your hike. I imagine you all were carrying lots and lots of water too.

Thanks Vickie. It was a great hike and highlight of our 2-week holiday road trip through some western states. The advantage of hiking GC in winter is the pleasant temps. It’s about 30-40 at rim and 50-60 at river, so water consumption was moderate. My son and I each carried 2 liters of water. We also fill up at Phantom Ranch and drank a few cups of lemonade so we were fairly hydrated before heading back up. It was a lot of elevation gain but certainly doable as a day hike for an avid hiker

I hiked to the bottom in April, 1982. I don't have any memories of hiking (except for blisters on the last 1000 feet vertical coming back). I have a photo showing the river visibly flowing and brown. Temperature was fine. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for sharing your story Mark! Luckily no blisters for me, but my calf started to cramp up back near the top. Probably went a little too fast on the way down

Superb camera work and editing as always. Truly eye opening scenery. I thought Bright Angel Trail was more interesting and more scenic. Was Bright Angel not an option for you to Phantom Ranch?

@@pw2883 thanks. BA was closed from Phantom Ranch to Havasupai Garden till at least May. One can go up to Tipoff then take Tonto cutoff trail to connect back to BA but that will add another 4.5miles and the view seems average. Hopefully one day I get to do R2R from N Kaibab and up BA to S Rim so I get to experience all the major trails in GC

@@ruggedlandThere was a bit of ice, snow, and mud on BA when I hiked it mid-April several years ago - a recipe for a slip-and-fall over the edge!
