How to shoot in harsh sunlight (or fix it in post!)
Shooting in the midday sun can be a challenge - but if you have cheap diffusion tools then you can create some absolutely beautiful looks on a shoe string budget.
Even if you don't quite nail it - I have a handy technique you can use in DaVinci Resolve to tweak the exposure between subject and background.

Great video. What are you using for your film grain? Looks great.
@@jandrefilms just in built resolve although had a few issues with this vid, not sure it came out super well!
think about voightländer first, best i ever had
thx for the tips
If the image captured doesn't clip, there is so much help in the software nowadays. Very interesting times we are living in, but in the end it's still better to have the best image in the field. Great video Ed, learning a lot from you as always!
There's so much emphasis on "overpowering the sun" instead of actually using it. These silks are great tools, and much lighter to use than a 1200 watt led. Beautiful work.
@@ngonzale3 exactly we just need to submit to the sun and accept our fate
what lens did you use? are they available :) ?
@@chrisreist these are new SIRUI full frame cine primes that should get announced this week
Hi Ed, what kind of tripod are you using for your Pyxis? Thanks
usually use my sachlter flow tech, but in this case used my smaller manfrotto tripod which is easier to transport, I’ve had for years but it’s a pain in the A to use.
@@EdProsser thank you. I was thinking of getting a flowtech. Their awesome
@@gaarax0x if you use a tripod every week you won’t regret it! Can be heavy, but I can suck that up for pro work.
Love the explanation Ed! Would be nice to had 5-1 but with white diffusion silk. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with us,really appreaciate it
mmm do you know if they exist??
Great video as always, thanks for the info! PS. Don't forget to lower your curtain rail :)
thank you!! Hopefully this weekend 💪
Great video. I love the approach of using Magic Mask to adjust lighting and exposure. MM is a very powerful tool.
it’s an amazing tool! although a bit temperamental in terms of remembering the tracking if you move the clip around on timeline
How you like the dji action 2?
never tried the action 2 you mean action 5?
the 5-in-1 reflector remains undefeated

@@EdProsser 😂
Viltrox 35mm 1.4?
no!
Great camera, but this Lens, simply wouldn't Do it,
too sharp for you?
@ yeah, but thats not all of it, clearly the cinematic characteristics are missing on this one compared to Sirui Saturn for example. No matter how hard you try in post, it will always give you that DSLR vibes. But i understand for this price tag, one should not expect too much.
@@alenlenia the Saturn are anamorphic - these are spherical. But yes these are very sharp and clean, different to what I’d usually choose to shoot on. I think for the price they they are kinda interesting, not sure there’s much competing with them
The master!
Really good video! I love ur content! GJ Ed!
Now I gotta find someone to hollywood the 5in1s. Looks so good dude, well crafted.
Give me the signal and I'll bounce over to help you
Maybe it's my new monitor, but I'm seeing a lot of noise... a little more than usual. Too much grain jejeje
Yeah there is grain the original images are clean - I usually add grain - although struggled refining this one - not sure if YT compression has changed a bit as my usual settings are looking a bit diff than they usually do
@@EdProsser thanks for the video. :)
Love the video!
love this dude chill but informative
Nice video but as usual, we would have liked to have the RAW footage out of the camera to see the difference.
you mean ungraded log footage? not sure that would be very clear
That fixed monitor on the side of the Pyxis is the biggest design mistake ever, even more so when it's a mostly touch based menu system. They were so close to making the perfect camera but just destroyed it with that side monitor plus the weird omission of hdmi.
Most cine cams are SDI, it’s a more secure connection etc. plus the BMD EVF / monitor are usb which I love. Side screen yeah I think it’ll be a love hate thing - when you’re shooting on sticks it’s very handy to be honest but not much use outside of that. I much prefer the Komodo’s top screen when shooting hand held etc. however has its own issues when camera high up on sticks. BMD menus are great to be honest and you can use hot keys for all the quick access settings you’d need when shooting like false colour, peaking etc. outside of that not generally interacting much with the settings once camera is setup for the day.
@EdProsser thanks for elaborating. I do a lot of handheld and that sidescreen is useless in that configuration. Honestly I think the new 12K LF seems much more attractive, even from a formfactor standpoint. Not having hdmi is not the deal breaker, I have sdi monitor too but it's just inconvenient if I wanna use an atem mini pro. Lots of cine cams have both.
@ Most monitors will cross convert - my Komodo is SDI only so I guess I'm just used to it. Also - in all occasions I'm rigging an external monitor anyway so side screen doesn't impact me much, but I hear you, everyone has different pain points. Would definitely recommend shooting with one to get a feel for it. Honestly I went in as a cynic and it has won me round.
How good is the AF through the Sigma MC21, compared to a native L mount lens?
probably not quite as snappy but generally it’s fine for pro work
9:08 that scared the living sht out of me
gotta keep you alert
For the gyro stabilization, did you manually input the lens data (focal length) into the camera?
No, at the time i didn’t realise you had to do this, but still got okay results. Someone flagged this to me a while back, so have started doing it moving forward. will mention it in my longer term review!
@EdProsser Interesting thanks for the reply! I thought the gyro stabilization was impressive I know pyxis is full frame, but I'm wondering for the pocket 4k and 6k etc if it would be the crop factor applied to the focal length ('full frame equivalent') or just the focal length listed on the lens 🤔
@ I think you'd just input the focal length listed on the lens, which is always the FF equivalent.
@@EdProsser Cool thank you for the help!
Am I right in thinking you graded this in Resolve, converting to cineon log, then used one of the in-built film conversions for a lot of these clips? Kodak 2383? Looks soooooo beautiful!
Most of the footage is graded with a few diff film emulation powergrades I’m testing out to see what I like, although some are quite heavily modified. hut some shots also feature that workflow
@@EdProsser ah i see. It's the best footage i've seen out of the camera, i ordered yesterday so excited to see what it can do :D Those Cookes are amazing, hoping my Leica's can get a similar look.
@@thesuperhighway If you've got Leica glass you'll have no excuse, would love a set myself! Pyxis wise - yeah still figuring out what I like and how to push the image around, making these vids has been useful to try diff techniques out. Enjoy your camera!
Would the blackmagic pocket cinema og give me a better image than the osmo pocket 3?
I'd imagine so! Larger sensor I think and raw recording.
Hey love this!, what lens was used for the pro res close up at 13:52 thanks :)
I can't quite remember, probably the LUMIX S 18mm
Wow, you put so much effort into this. Genuinely inspiring! Very happy to have discovered your channel for anything cinematography. I'm about to do a big investment in professional gear to build a studio, but also to have every piece of equipment I will need on location ; lighting, diffusers, backdrops, clamps, etc etc... I'm still doubting which camera to buy. The one at the top of my list to use for the next few years is the Lumix S5IIX (or a new one if they announce something during the next 2 months). My focus is documentary-style videos/films, but also have gigs at weddings and the occasional fotoshoots. I'm experienced in audio/video editing, but want to dive deep into cinematography. Buying the S5IIX instead of spending more on Fx3 or RED allows me to invest widely in other equipment. I watched your video on the S5IIX, big factor in my decision. If you could give your opinion of my idea/plan, camera-wise?
It's difficult to give someone else advice on this kinda thing as everyone's needs and experience are different, but the LUMIX S5 IIX is a great all rounder that will probably be more useful and easier to use with stuff like IBIS and AF and much cheaper to setup and cheaper ongoing running costs (storage with a RED becomes a cost factor as you shoot more).
I wanted to use XLCS cage, but though it may be too heavy. I also needed to protect the SDI ports. Then I though about adding all the other parts I would need "without" the cage. I do not need a Rod base plate, or a rod and rod bracket to hold the Lens Adapter, or a special hardware to mount Rosettes (most are predetermined by makers), or use of a V-mount Battery Plate (small one to the back plate, and batteries have already got a few power ports on them). As I weighed up just those things alone - they amount to about 70% of the XLCS cage. The design favors placing cable clips, and putting things like Lidar Focus gear, Transmitter, SSD housing, Sound Recorder, EVF, Monitor and many other things ANYWHERE YOU WANT.
A little correction - my rig shows an added nato rail to attach the DJI Focus pro grip, there is in fact an ACTUAL Nato rail built into the cage just underneath that I stupidly overlooked!
good vid this, what did you film on when talking to the camera? thanks. it looks like komodo but yeah i might be mistaken!
LUMIX S5 IiX
Doesn’t make sense in price. I just picked one up used for $1150. Should never have cost as much as it did
Yeah I couldn't justify picking on up in the end - I may pick one up if it drops to around £800 - £900... but I don't NEED one.
Love this cage!
it's great!
That matte box seen better days 😂
It's a lightweight rubber front so it looks like it's deformed but its fine!
@EdProsser ah gotchu!
It's your fault the Pyxis is sitting in my B&H cart.
There is more to come. Stay strong.💪
You just need to be a "pro" first. Chose violence 😂.
Mystery Lenses! I think i can tell what these might be! Camera looks nice dude, think i prefer the Red footprint size for travel shoot etc, but this is a great looking camera.
Yeah my Komodo is a nicer size and a little lighter! I prefer the top screen on the Komodo as well
It needs more holes!!!
I’ll go get my drill…
That 118mm Dulens looking good! Well that’s my guess anyway. Dope review. I have the same cage!
I wish I had some Dulens in!
Thanks for the build, video. What are you doing for timecode? I think the Deity Theos has TC out, right. Does the Pyxis interpret audio timecode through the 3.5mm jack to metadata timecode the way some BMD cameras do? (Or am I just having a fever dream about that?)
I believe with THEOS you need the additional time code module to sync with camera. Pyxis has its own time code port. I haven’t had a shoot where I needed time code with the Pyxis yet though, if it’s just 1-2 cams and one audio source I just sync myself in post.
If there is external jack on Pyxis you could run feed from F3 to camera for easy sync afterwards .
@@IanSnape yeah I haven’t tried they just because I had issues on Komodo with running it off same battery. I tend to run THEOS into mic port of camera or sep into F3 but to think going into mic port of cam sounds great! I also do backup recording on the THEOS packs as well
Hi Ed, I've a question on BRAW recording in Lumix S5IIx compared to Blackmagic cameras, I couldn't figure it out correctly yet, kindly help - post a test video on that In Black magic cameras, they have dual native iso and have highlight / shadow based on that, say if we want to preserve highlight, we have to shoot at highest iso in that range and can bring that down in post. In Lumix S5IIx, if I need to shoot in 4000 iso for low light, but I want to record in BRAW but need to control noise in shadow, so shooting braw in second native 4000 iso helps or should shoot in first native iso 640? I'm quite confused on this, please give me clarity on this, if possible include both black magic cameras and lumix for this test / explanation. Thankyou
I have a video comparing LUMIX S5 iiX & PYXIS in the works!
@@EdProsser Wonderful
Do you think this camera is enough to shoot a high end feature film? And how about the cage ? This one or Tilta which better ?
At that point, it's probably not the camera that makes it high end but the skills of the crew who operate it, the quality of the writing, the skill in directing and editing and all the other elements that go into it. The camera wont make up for lacking in those areas. As for the Tilta cage - I've not tried it!
Are the anamorphic shots at the end also mystery lenses? 👀👀👀
yes
Do you do color grade tutorials?
Occasionally!
While it's unlikely that I'll be investing in a Pyxis - I thoroughly enjoyed this build. Great to see BM doing great things!
Ed! Awesome video the evf look great, i have some questions on the first 2 frames. Its about lighting, did you used a diffusion on the left side ? the roll of looks great (if so what size) and also maybe you also used a little kicker on the right or maybe the light just bounce . Thanks in advance!
Yeah just a small Matthew’s open end scrim, artificial silk to diffuse sun (can’t remember the size but probably the smallest frame they make) Just had my assistant hold it up off camera left, nothing to back light, but plenty of bounce from warm sand. Very simple and mobile setup! We were also using a large 5-in-1 reflector to diffuse in wider shots
@@EdProsser Thanks you Ed! Love the setup but the eye and composition are great!
