Absolutely love this camera and realising that you can have such a streamlined, lightweight setup for 90% of work was really liberating with me. It is - I actually never invested in a mattebox until much later down the line, I do see some differences in the quality, but that's mainly on my Komodo which is susceptible to IR pollution. On the LUMIX I pretty much always go VND all the way unless I have a bit more time for rigging. Had my eyes on the 28-70 for some time!
@@EdProsser the 28-70 is one of the best lenses I've ever owned - incredible autofocus, perfect IQ all throughout the range and the cherry on top is the size - it's literally half the weight of the 24-70. A couple weeks ago I purchased the Shinobi 7 monitor, which is how I found your video, because I wanted to find the most effective way of connecting it all together. I was hoping you could tell me the best cables to get for compatibility purposes, because I don't see them on the list. Beautiful work as always Ed and pumped for the 10K milestone! 🎉 Funny you should mention the 24-70 AF. I was formerly a zealot for the 24-105 for clean, no nonsense corporate video on the S1H and S5. I’ve come around to the 24-70 now as the AF gets better and better and also, having been indoctrinated into strategising around manual focus over years, finally relaxing and letting AF make shooting life easier and provide options. I love your rig! And Insta360 off to the side!! Love it! Very Mr Kitters 😸 What do you do for audio? I use that DMW-XLR1 adapter, which is excellent. You get phantom power, line in, low-pass, and dual xlr in. The pre-amps are excellent too. Are you using that new HIGH stability mode?
Yeah it's totally that thing if relaxing and working with AF! It makes things a lot easier. Audio wise the the XLR add on sorta blocks my top handle and monitor placement so I don't use it... I either record internally for smaller jobs or into my Zoom F3. I've been testing it, it's great on wider lenses like the 18mm where IBIS was sorta unusable before

Great video. I've had mine for a little over a year. Great camera. I use it for run n gun travel videos. Stabilization is perfect. Love this video. I've been debating between EF and L lenses, as I still have two P4ks and 2 GH6's. With the AF update, is the AF with EF lenses still as good or did it get better as well?
Updates are firmware based so yeah it's system wide across L and adapted lenses. It'll still depend on the adapter and specific lens, you'll always get beat performance from native L lenses!
@EdProsser I've been using the s5 ii x with the 18-35 and it's seemed great. Cool to see someone using EF with it. I've got the sigma mc-21 for the s5 ii x
@@jeremypope-levison721 yeah I shoot across diff cam systems and mounts so don't wana invest heavily in a mirrorless mount... I kinda hate that the industry is moving towards mirrorless only lenses .. But at least we still got PL.
Sexy rig :) how ais the autofocus now? with the new updates and 7 months later after your initial s5ii review ? im on the OG s5 and the thought of using autofocus on production scares me a lot :)
It's good enough for me on these kinds of jobs, any time it's not doing what I want I can quickly toggle it off from the lens, which is nice and quick. I probably would still set the camera to manual focus for interviews, but mainly because these are solo operating jobs and I'm not always monitoring the camera continuously - which I'd want to do if it were on AF. I'm planning another vid on the AF and IBIS updates - testing is positive, it's improving, probably not as world leading as Sony - but I think it's good enough for my use!
That's a good question... a lot of the time I'm using both together and the LUMIX is a b-cam or on a gimbal. Generally I opt for the LUMIX S5 iiX if I'm shooting on my own, am delivering footage to a client online (so I can shoot smaller file sizes with compressed media), travelling by train or public transport... or if it's just a lower budget job or something quick that doesn't require a chunkier camera setup. For most of my TH-cam content creation I'm using my LUMIX to capture BTS, talking heads and sample footage too. Having the V-mount solution is just sooooooo much better - even when I'm just recording my talking head pieces for TH-cam because it means I don't have to worry about monitoring battery time if I'm recording a long script.
Nice build Ed, thanks for this. The S5iix seems excellent value, I’m seriously considering it. Do you worry at all about possible HDMI burnout when powering camera and monitor from the same power source? I read so many tales of woe with this happening.
No I've not heard about this! The battery power is regulated so it should be okay, but generally I power the camera up and down properly and the dtap is coming from the battery plate which can be switched on and off too.
@@EdProsser unfortunately it’s definitely something that can happen, apparently even with regulated battery plates. I’ve seen too many ‘help my monitor’s not working anymore’ messages across forums, due to burnt out HDMI or SDI ports. Apparently the key is to attach power cables first, then HDMI or SDI cables, then power on. Then the reverse when removing them. Here’s an article from ARRI about this with SDI, but it’s equally applicable to HDMI: www.arri.com/resource/blob/194752/d3093e6af632150787ec95d176a39958/download-technical-information-data.pdf
Yes this is true with SDI I do this protocol with my Komodo but never heard this with HDMI - if you can share some information or links that detail this?
Hey Ed, did you update to the latest firmware? The new stabilization and auto focus improvements are game-changers. It really negates the use of a gimbal.
I haven't had a huge amount of time to test it out properly but will hopefully take cam out tomorrow, i'm excited that my 18mm can be used handheld without all the warping
Awesome video! Does the Sigma 24-70 OS work alongside the S5IIX IBIS - or do you have to pick one or the other? I've just ordered the 24-70 L mount - but if you get double stabilisation with the EF lens and camera body I'm going to go this route instead! Thanks
It's one OR the other but you can of course combine it with stuff like E-stabilisation. From my experience the lens OIS is superior as you don't get stuff like warping at wider focal lengths. I've not really tested the lens just using IBIS tho.
@@EdProsser Awesome. Can you enable touchscreen for the Shinobi to use camera controls? like tap to focus? Can you mirror it to the camera screen to see that it is recording on the monitor so no need to check camera screen??
@@EdProsser that’s the one camera I know I will pickup this year. But it’s been all lenses for me so far. Love the rig, I’ll make sure to use your affiliate links when I build mine :)
ohh no I haven't - tbh the v-mount is pretty flat and is okay pushed into my chest - haven't noticed it causing me discomfort, but I'll take a look at this.
Do you provide any support to the Sigma lens adapter? Some of the EF lenses can be quite heavy. I have the same adapter and am figuring out what the best way to provide support to the adapter.
No idea to be honest as have never measured the weight! I'm not exactly a muscle head... Not very heavy. I prefer a heavier setup though as it helps stabilise.
How useable is "useable" with an external monitor via the HDMI sound trick? I've not seen anyone actually cover this issue with real world use, only filming screens with timers. I'd really love to know because I just recently picked this camera up and am dying to rig it out. Most of my work is music videos, primarily metal, where there is aggressive camera movements. Thanks!

@@rrrrr____ I don't own that camera so don't know specifically sorry. But generally Small rig has the best bang for buck in terms of rigging equipment.
I bought the Shinobi 7, plugged it into the mains and I'm not getting any power. Any ideas? Tried short and long presses... HDMI in and out... Nothing 😔.
hmm that is strange, I've never tried it plugged in always with a dtap or with batteries in the back... I will add though that powering it up does seem to be a dark art, I feel like you have to rapidly push the power button a few times or do a long press... mine seems to never turn on consistently with a long press either.
@@EdProsser I'll try it with the dtap and smallrig battery when my cable arrives. Spoke to the seller, and they said I need to put some kind of shells in, where the batteries would go, otherwise it won't recognise that it's trying to be powered up by the dc port.
@EdProsser I agree with you on that. I wish EF would still be manufactured but it's cool to see cine lenses being made in native mounts.
@@EdProsser this sounds promising , will look for a nice second hand s5iix to replace my s5 as A cam , thanks . Will be waiting for your that video ;)
Cool rig you got there! On what kind of projects do you use your Komodo rig vs the S5 IIx rig you showcased here?
Here’s an article from ARRI about this with SDI, but it’s equally applicable to HDMI:
www.arri.com/resource/blob/194752/d3093e6af632150787ec95d176a39958/download-technical-information-data.pdf
Yes this is true with SDI I do this protocol with my Komodo but never heard this with HDMI - if you can share some information or links that detail this?
This rig made me money too… paid for itself in one shoot.
It's a very economical camera, a lot of bang for your buck!
Hey, nice camera ❤. What vnds are you using with it ? Thanks
I've been using the H&Y revoring VND but currently testing out a nisi vns which am also liking
I've not really tested the lens just using IBIS tho.
do you need a gimble with it? I heard it is extremely stable hand held
I don't like gimbals, rarely use one
Is the Shinobi 7 plug and play with the S5ii? nice rig! Working on similar
Pretty much, just needs power and hdmi.
@@EdProsser Awesome. Can you enable touchscreen for the Shinobi to use camera controls? like tap to focus? Can you mirror it to the camera screen to see that it is recording on the monitor so no need to check camera screen??
@polsarimagery no camera control on the Shinobi 7, you can view camera settings though
Is it possible to link all the items in one Link?
hmm like a product playlist ? I can have a look to see if this is possible on Amazon
Hey Ed, how's the AF working with that lens on an adaptor?
I have the same lens for my canon. But been thinking about switching
yeah it works great, not the quietest AF lens though!
@@EdProsser Thank for the response!
This is a possible to turn on camera information on external monitor and on camera monitor too at the same time?
Nice try Ed. I see you using the osmo pocket 3 in this video. You better have a review soon ;)
Haha you win! I wondered when someone was gonna notice that Easter egg!! I'll have a video on it at some point only had it for a week or so
@@EdProsser that’s the one camera I know I will pickup this year. But it’s been all lenses for me so far.
Love the rig, I’ll make sure to use your affiliate links when I build mine :)
Hey ED have a similar rig just I add a Shoulderchest smallrig pad mounted on rods behind the V mount...did you try it out?
Greatings
Fil
ohh no I haven't - tbh the v-mount is pretty flat and is okay pushed into my chest - haven't noticed it causing me discomfort, but I'll take a look at this.
SM 3183 chest pad really good
Does the improvement for the Lumix auto focus the most recent update apply to EF lenses or only L mount Lenses?
Both, you'll always get the best performance with native l mount lenses though
If you shoot 3:2 anamorphic I find the atomos struggle to fill the frame of the monitor, the Osee has done much better for me.
It has some huge annoying bevels too, but anamorphic is always gonna reduce screen space. What's the model of your monitor I'll check it out?
Do you provide any support to the Sigma lens adapter? Some of the EF lenses can be quite heavy. I have the same adapter and am figuring out what the best way to provide support to the adapter.
Seems fine with most of the lenses I use, but you could just add a lens support to the rails below.
@@EdProsser I see. Thank you.
Hi Ed, How much does the entire rig weigh?
No idea to be honest as have never measured the weight! I'm not exactly a muscle head... Not very heavy. I prefer a heavier setup though as it helps stabilise.
lumix is beast. and best rig. pratical and small. not a lot of bullshits like v-mount for monitor, npf for focus motor, blablabla
Thanks!
I use an external monitor all the time and I think it's fine! I'd be more worried about rolling shutter for the fast paced stuff
Ed, how does the HDMI lag impact manual focus? Is it usable to pull manually on an external monitor?
I find it's fine?
I'm new to rigging out camera's and i could really use some help. I have the FX30, Sony ECM-B1M shotgun mic and the Sigma 18-50mm. I want to add a monitor and a battery and i have no clue how to do it. Any other recommended accesoires for my setup are also welcome. If its possible i would like to keeo it budget friendly
Buy a cage and then mount a handle and monitor to it. Take a look at the parts I use and how I'm mounting it.
@@EdProsser but there are so many cages and mounts too choose from. Do you know specific parts that i can buy for the fx30 and are budget friendly
@@rrrrr____ I don't own that camera so don't know specifically sorry. But generally Small rig has the best bang for buck in terms of rigging equipment.
@@EdProsser Thanks i'll look into the smallrig gear for it
I bought the Shinobi 7, plugged it into the mains and I'm not getting any power.
That doesn't sound right to me. Might be worth updating your list in the description to include a dtap to dc cable and a coiled HDMI. Assumed it'd come with one and it didn't 😅
@@EdProsser Ended up switching it for the Black Magic Assistant 5". All works fine now, so think it was a faulty device. I think the 5" feels a bit better in terms of size. 7" feels a little too much for me.
@@worldfamilyenglish great! Ironically I got the Shinobi 7 as my BlackMagic VA 5in broke haha
Which one is true, cant remember: you loose some autofocus performance when connected to ssd or connected external display via HDMI?
I don't think either is true?
is s5iix better than sony fx3? which camera is good for independent filmmaking?
Both are great and will be capable of amazing results- one is cheaper than the other.
@@EdProsser so can I go with s5iix instead on fx3. I mostly shoot on indoor natural light.
@@changeguys I shoot on the LUMIX S5 iix as an independent filmmaker and I'm very happy with it, I can't really tell you what to buy, but I think pretty much any modern camera in the £2K+ range will give you great results!
@@EdProsser thanks🙌
My set up is similar but for some reason when I shoot 60fps I get frame skips or glitches or hitches.. I don't know what can be causing this.. I'm using the sigma mc1 adapter
is this when you record RAW or record internally? it's showing up on recorded video or just monitor?
What is the model number for that Sigma Art 24-70mm? It’s the EF version, I take it?
It is yes
@@EdProsser Many thanks. How's the focus breathing on it?
Seems fine to me
I have a new 24-70 that I’m selling since it came with my bundle, if you happen need another
Haha I'm all good!
I'm actually looking to sell my s5iix cine rig to get the Pyxis, Great rig but I'm a BM fanboy. Any takers?
Nice, it's the same sensor so should be a comfortable transition. Will you stay with the L-Mount option?
@@EdProsser Yeah I think it’s the most flexible for using a variety of lenses. I also have the Catta Zooms for E-mount which can be switched to L-Mount
