    Really good points. Just started to "stain" my panels and canvases with mixture of Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre and Thinner (I use water mixable oils). It also helps to keep right values, as white gives high contrast. I use only long hand brushes (standard 11 inch). Don't like short handles at all. Also heard from few painters to use bigger brush than you may think will suit the job. And it's very easy to get lost in details... Thanks for great video!

    Thank you so much George for this tutorial on shadows. I used to love art at school and had some brilliant teachers. I loved it but then I left has a way of getting in the way and kicking me up the arse and after several starts and many brick walls called life getting in the way again I' ve finally started to get into it again. And I'm really enjoying it now. But delighted to learn all these new found techniques and so many different new paints available and so many different papers and stuff. I'm like a child left loose in a sweet shop I'm loving it but I've been so long away I can honestly say I'm way back to the beginner stage again. But still I have no complaints. In my day All we had is the one kind of paper which was not great and was no where near the quality we have now and the paints were these jars of powder paints that were not the most pleasant to work with. The paints now are a joy to use. Having TH-cam is Gods blessing to me it's like having a teacher in your own home every day and I' ve learned so much and have peace at the same time. I always had a bit of a problem with shading though so I'm very grateful for this. You explain it in a way that is very easy to understand. Thank you so much George. Susan

    Another post which contradicts assumptions - there will aways be brilliant blue skies in the tropics! I can remember a West Dean Tutor saying you did not need anything more than Cobalt Blue in England, keep Ultramarine for the South of France. You grey skies in Somerset were useful preparation! Lots of distractions to the left of the canvas! 😉

    • @GeorgeFrederickThomas
      @GeorgeFrederickThomas 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes I've certainly had a lot of practice painting grey skies in Somerset, I hadn't realised it would be good practice for painting in the tropics! Even with the grey sky here the weather is still hot and quite humid. There were quite a few distractions haha ;)

      @@GeorgeFrederickThomas Enjoy being young!! I meant to say about the light behind trees in the previous post. When i was a student, I walked through the University Parks in Oxford in early May. The path led through an evergreen shrubbery - laurel or yew about 15-20 feet high. You entered a dark thicket but on the other western side were two mature copper beech trees just coming into leaf. It was about 5pm in full sun and I entered into a hemisphere of rose pink/golden light. The trunks, branches and twigs were silhouetted against this - never to be forgotten. Perhaps worth painting form memory! This would have been May 1973. Alas the trees died a few years later but it was wonderful back lighting!

  • @ianbrowne8871
    @ianbrowne8871 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

    It has been a hectic couple of weeks with garden/studio upgrades, car service and MOT ... but i did enjoy this post. One always assumes that the tropics will be full of light but with tropical vegetation is not aways the case. The golden back lighting has been rendered very well - especially streaming through the banana. Also worth noting the topical soils been a helpful set of reds which complement all the greens - nature was giving you a hand!

    • @GeorgeFrederickThomas

      You can hold the plastic palette in the same way that I hold the wooden one, with your thumb through the hole with the main bulk of the palette behind resting on your arm. I hope this helps :)

    You would get a highlight to the edge of a sphere. It would just gleam invisible because there’s no other plain for the shadow cast. Like OC <- in essence would be your highlight, so you wouldn’t see the curve because of the highlight.

    • @GeorgeFrederickThomas
      @GeorgeFrederickThomas หลายเดือนก่อน

      When the ball is getting lit from the front like in this demo the highlight won't be on the very edge as it's a 3D object it starts to curve away and get further from the light source towards the edges of the form so they get a bit darker. So the specular highlight will be on the point that it's closest to the light source not on the edge
