I enjoyed watching this masterclass of un-rushed painting last night. Using traditional methods and materials you have managed to produce a portrait which can only be 21st century! It is almost magical when you begin to see a form and then a face take shape. I was amused by the comment on the placing of the eyes - it is so easy for that to go wrong and a squinting model is not a desirable result! The interesting thing here is they lids and lashes take up most of the space, there is hardly any white of the eye, yet you are quite conscious of the eye. The use of green on the face is interesting, when painting an icon the main base coat is often an opaque olive brown and then the shaves which form the face as sketched in in a transparent green called veddaccio and the forms reappear. The other trick were were told in the icon class was to use a bit of green below the bottom lip which makes the rose of the lips sing! You should be very pleased with the result !

Eye placement is tricky especially when there is a tilt to the head, the natural tendency is to try and straighten things up but if the head is tilted its easy to paint one eye too low or high in relation to the other one. I think the hardest thing about painting eyes is that there are two of them! Yes a few hints of green can really help bring the warm colours in the face to life!
