Brilliant video but either I'm going deaf or your 🎤 is dodgy.. I'm thinking of buying a non runner 4911 any advice? It has the crystal style cab in it too
Super educational
Excellent stuff
People like Harry Ferguson stood behind their product with the intent of always working to improve. Nowadays it’s a limited life at a high price. th-cam.com/video/aT7KyIzhZjQ/w-d-xo.html
I completed my apprenticeship with the agents for Rolls Royce diesels here in New Zealand. I went on to train as a marine engineer in Germany where i came upon both Perkins and Rolls Royce engines driving generators in ships. I have long retired now and was quite surprised to see this video about Perkins Diesels, so thank you for this
@@lauramildon-clews7850 Thanks for watching. I'm delighted someone like yourself found it good.
Hi I have worked on quite a few perkins engines and quite a few rolls royce diesel engines but never had to work on a Gardner they just work. In my time as an hgv and plant mechanic Cummins and Cat were king, Gardner were my favourite because they never seemed to go wrong and rolls and perkins struggled to keep there fluids on the inside. I am shure other people have had different experiences but these were mine
The 4.236???
Agree totally with earlier comments i.e. "the two worst things from the good old Morris Minor, the weak gearbox and inadequate front suspension and put them both in the Marina" . In the 1980's I was forever replacing the lower trunnions on Marina's that had seized steering, making turning of the steering wheel almost impossible (due to lack of regular greasing). The front torsion bar suspension was also hideous with little or no 'springing' . The gearbox often self destructed with synchro failure, reverse idler shredding etc. The irony here is I would still love to own a 1.8 TC coupe !!.....
We had truck in Jamaica in the 70s with 6 354
Interesting, can you remember what kind of truck?
Yes my dad new Fargo I think you call them dodge they were tilt cab we had three of them
Was the 4.99 that really secured Perkins their world wide name, knocking Daimler Benz off their spot as the global reefer diesel supplier, that engine was bought or license built everywhere for every conceivable application. The most important diesel engine of the last century, pretty much every auto manufacturer who ended up being well known for their diesels used or built their own 4.99-4.108 from VW to Nissan.
Very true, a hugely important engine that left a fantastic legacy. Thanks 👍
Hi I'm new to your channel enjoying the videos , I have a ransom mg 5 market garden(mg) track laying tractor also the ransom made mg 2, mg6 mg 40 it is a single 8 hp with a t20 single trail plough about 1948 ish not complaining just leting you know thanks 👍
Thanks Tony, welcome to the channel. 👍
You can use this to make a spot welder. Popular for making old school nicd or nimh packs
Thanks 👍
Mighty stuff Alan, some great detailed information, Thank You👍🙏
Thanks Pat 👍
In the late 1930s they also made other engines including the S range, S6 and for marine S6M
@@DavidCartwright-p8w Thanks for that information.. 👍
Frank Perkins Founder son Hugh was my property valuer here in New Zealand. He immigrated here.
Interesting. Thanks for that 👍
I had several MF farm machines with that wonderful engine.
@@davidkimmel5153 Thanks for watching 👍
The generators at my workplace have Perkins engines. Run like clockwork
I bought 2850 few weeks back, probably the top of the line model back then. Cosmetically on bad side, but mechanically i didn't find any flaws yet. Hopefully it will serve me good :)
@jocjoc20001 Very good. If looked after well it should last u many years
I use a Mf 165 with the 4 cylinder 3.5 litre.
206 like the 65 or the later 212?
I enjoyed that video. I bought a 83 2140 3 years ago. It has had every single fault u described and more. Ive yet to use it in anger.
That's unfortunate.. Did you get it repaired? Thanks for watching 👍
@AgrimotiveFarmMachinery I'm hoping to get time after Christmas to take the cab off, lift the top cover off and fit new seals on the lift cylinder and valves. Then split it and do the rear crank seal. Hopefully that's the last of it. But ive said that too many times.
Good video. Ive a newholland 376 baler and a newholland knife bar. Good machines..
Thanks for all the history of Fiat tractors. Your mention that a 6.2 liter engine today would produce 500 to 600 HP, but all the modern 500 HP tractors use 12.4 liters or larger engines.
@briansmith8385 That's true, but in my head I was thinking more about engines in the automotive sense. Don't ask me why 🤣 Thanks for watching 👍
They’re shit if you want to order parts.
@@WineScrounger 30 years repairing Perkins and never had an issue with parts. Thanks for watching 👍
Picture from founders Perkins and Chapman (2:15) is taken in front of Helsinki railway station, Finland. I wonder what they have been doing in Helsinki.
@@maopettaja That's interesting. Thanks for that 👍
While Perkins 6.354 was popular their biggest seller was the 4.236 by a huge margin.
Very true.. the 4.236 was by far their biggest seller.. Thanks 👍
Massey Ferguson tractors were the first vehicles to drive to the South Pole, one was driven by Sir Edmond Hillary.
@@timmccormack710 Very true.👍
Not fitted with Perkins Diesels. They were fitted with Vanguard gasoline engines in that period.
In my 50+ years of diesel engine rebuilding, the 6.354 was an all time favourite.
@Railfan6675 It's up there as one of my favourites, too 👍
A great durable engine and easy to work on
Pretty sad that Massey and Perkins have pretty much abandoned their roots.
@prevost8686 Like the vast majority of company's from that era that got swallowed up by bigger corporations
Growing up in the 70,s in east Meath there was a few Bizon combines I remember the advertised in Farmers journal. Also saw them new at spring show. If I recall they were distributed by the O Shea tractor group in Santry. I think the same importer for Zetor and Ursus. I can recall something about using a Leyland 6 cyc engine. But it may have been like the Forchritte combines stating MAN engines were in fact I think it was a MAN design manufactured in the eastern block communist counties under licence
@johncallaghan3367 Thanks for that John. Some great information there. I'm a Meath man myself 👍
Now here in Canada perkins was big with MF but nothing else till 80's
@@davidmattice3752 Thanks for watching 👍
The beating heart of many old Masseys. Great video Alan well researched.👍👍
@@FlyingFergyMan Thanks Cathal. No better man to know a thing or two about Perkins. You must have a couple dozen about the yard 😁
They like rabbits Alan, get a few and the next you know the place is coming down with them.😂😂
@FlyingFergyMan 🤣
Does anyone know what the Perkins symbol stands for, I have been told, just want to check it's correct.
@@darrylshelford2674 The Perkins Engines logo is an iconic representation of the company’s long-standing history and engineering heritage. The logo, often referred to as the "Perkins Diamond," is inspired by the design of a stylized four-lobed shape that resembles a gear or flower. Its origins can be traced to the company's early branding efforts, where it sought to create a symbol reflecting precision engineering and reliability, key qualities of Perkins diesel engines. The four-lobed shape is thought to symbolize both the core of an engine (with each lobe representing precision and balance) and the global reach of Perkins, as the company has supplied engines worldwide since its founding in 1932. Frank Perkins, who founded the company in Peterborough, England, aimed for the logo to embody innovation and quality. The clean, symmetrical design also reflects the technical sophistication of Perkins Engines and has remained consistent over the decades, reinforcing brand recognition. While the specific artistic inspiration behind the design is not well-documented, its association with industrial machinery and engineering excellence has cemented its place in the diesel engine industry.
Friend of mine has an old sign that used to hang in their garage back in the 50s. Says under the perkins badge a square deal all round.
Easy. Hugh Perkins was my property valuer here in my town of Oamaru South island New Zealand. He was also deputy Mayor He purchased my childhood doctors old home then put that logo on a square on his footpath . I asked him what the logo means?, Huge said it symbolizes Perkins Engines all 4 corners of the world. Hugh moved up to Christchurch to be closer to his daughter.
"Square deal all round" is what I was told by a former employee of Perkins.
I have a 1976 case with a 4 cylinder perkins! Still runs like a champ! I'm in kanadasrtan!
@billyholiday4947 Thanks.. where in the world is Kanadasrtan? Never heard of it..
Also in Kanadastan. 1970 MF 4cyl. 10K hrs, still starts in the winter. Kanadastan is like Londonistan.
Lololo! I’m in ‘ the people’s republic of Illinois’ I have a Perkins in my AC 175. One thing about it , it’s tough! Way over 6k hours and just works. Characteristic engine sound. Have heard them in other tractor brands too. Cheers.
